eight or ten inches. that's the kind of storm this is. and you know what? it will get started a little bit later tonight. but as you can see, there's a bit of rain showing up to our south. looks like a weird setup. here's what will happen. we're waiting for this energy to help give this one a boost and a new storm will form off the coast. that will become the nor'easter. and that process has not started. but when it gets going later tonight, we're going to go see some of this beginning as light rain and then changing over to snow. rapidly. to give you an idea, while not all of this is hitting the ground, eventually, it will, i see a little bit of mix showing up on radar down towards the ring george area. you still have a couple more hour, as many as three or four, to do your snow preps and be ready. the amount of snow is challenging, because march is march. it's warm. did you notice how gorgeous it was today? our temperature got into the mid 40's. but the pavement is warmer, and so with a strong march

will see initially a little bit of this melting sit begins but the heaviest coming overnight and that's the thing that's convenient about this storm. most of us will be home when it gets going and the plows will have a chance to first of all use their plows and second of all to get a lot out of the way. hopefully before the morning commute. i do expect many cancelations. this is going to be a heavy wet snow and it will be disruptive. in the pink other purple color if it shows up as that on yoursy that's where the heaviest snow will be in the winter storm warning, but is it a challenge with the rain snow line because all for last several days, the rain snow line has been getting closer and closer to dc. now we even see it potentially pushing into montgomery county, which would mean less snow for these areas where you're seeing it change over to rain or sleet. let's run you through the headlines. snow will develop 9:00. give or take half hour or

you may see a little rain. the rain snow line will cut down accumulations for many places. one of those places likely right along the i95 corridor. so and if this continues to push west, which has been the trend, the amounts will not be as big as they could be. highest accumulations where it stays all snow and you know where that is, usually north and west, frederick county, i'm looking at you. northern montgomery county, western loudoun county. this will be a huge storm. but it really gets its act together north of our latitude, which is why the northern and western suburbs will be hit hard. heaviest between midnight and 7:00 a.m. most accumulation is done by about 11:00 tomorrow morning, we'll show you the totals coming up in a few minutes. and we're going to take you hour by hour through the futurecast so you have an idea of when that snow is going to be hitting your house the hardest and again we'll have more on that snow totals everybody wants to know and we'll hav y

that. jim and marina, back to you. we do have team coverage as we get ready to deal with the first big storm. gary mcgrady live in gaithersburg and tom fitzgerald in annapolis >> paul wagner is live from southeast spoke to dc's mayor mayor bowser. tell us what's the latest. >> reporter: standing here in front of the salt here in southeast right off south capitol street. the mayor says they're going to have about 200 of these guys out here on the street tonight. they're going to be deployed all over the citily. ready to go, right around 7:00 tonight. now, the mayor said that they don't know exactly as far as it's snow totals are concerned. as we heard from sue, there's a rain snow line out there. and so they can't say right now what they're going to do about the schools. so there's no decision yet on dc schools. and the mayor said that they will probably have to wait until tomorrow morning to make a decision. that's what everything wants to know, of cou

to happen with the schools. let's show you video that we shot from earlier. mayor bowser gathered the team where she laid out the district's plans so far, the streets been treated and beginning at 7:00 tonight, approximately, 200 trucks will be deployed at all key intersections and highways. plans being made to assist the homeless with warming shelters set up and teams are prepared to make their way around the city, people picking people up. dc fire and ems is calling in additional resources and the private ambulance service, amr is staffing up as well. garbage pickups being postponed. also asked to look on elderly neighbors and help shovel the walk, anyone who needs that can call 311. >> the mayor joked about what may or may not be coming, listen first to what the mayor had to say followed by

come on in here. this is the maryland state highway administration dome in annapolis. now, usually, when we do these things, you got to walk in mid march halfway into the building to get any salt. here we are, we're bearing down on st. patrick's day on friday. i can lay down here and you'd be hitting the salt. that's how much they have here. they're stocked ready to go. they've got plenty of supply. now, what they're not so sure they have though is the complete attention of marylanders. and here's why. you can look at this two ways. on the other hand you can say, well, everybody should be fresh. they should be ready. they shouldn't have anything keeping them in the way of paying attention to the storm. on the other hand, you can say well, they're rusty, nobody dealt with this issue. governor larry hogan of maryland said this standing about five feet from where we are, if anybody got that in their head, forget it. hogan said peo

serious about this storm. >> some people are sort of lulleded into a false sense of security because we have this great 70 degree weather, i think everybody thinks it's spring and we're ready to put on flip-flops and go barbecue in the backyard. this is a serious winter storm, going to be the biggest event we've had this season. and people need to be prepared and need to be safe. >> reporter: and that's at the governor tonight. one of the difficulties they're having in preparing for this is not the equipment, not the logistic, it's trying to get a handle on what they're going to be presented with. they could have vastly different snow totals in western maryland that they will have in the chesapeake area. what does that mean? they were looking at moving some equipment around. the new director of the maryland state highway administration says they put some of that thought to rest last night. because of a conference call. listen to what he had to say as fa

waiting and seeing before they make a massive move of redeploying. >> yesterday afternoon, we were in a conference call and actually discussing bringing some larger equipment down from western maryland into the capitol region. but storm starts to track, we realize we couldn't do that yet because they're going to a significant amount there as well. >> reporter: they've got 3,000 employees ready here at the maryland state highway administration. they've got 2,700 pieces of gear. they're keeping a close eye on the power companies. this is not just going to hit virginia, dc and maryland. this is going up east coast. to pennsylvania, delaware, new jersey. to new york, connecticut massachusetts. if maryland is hit with big power outages, governor hogan says

companies that are servicing maryland. he says he's gotten insurances they have prepositioned and they will be ready to deal with whatever this storm has to offer the state of maryland. live in annapolis, tom fitzgerald fox 5 local news. thank you, we go from dc to maryland now to the commonwealth of virginia. which is also getting ready for the storm this afternoon. governor mcauliffe announcing a state of emergency. the governor joins us on the phone. thank you, governor being with us. how are snow preparations going so far in virginia >> well, we got off 1:30 hit the big emergency meeting 1:30. they determine that we can get up to eight to 12 inches in parts of the commonwealth. west of 95. up to northern virginia. could be eight to 12, so i declared a state of emergency to begin to move the equipment around. we now have deployed about 7800 pieces of equipment. 8600 personnel. got news is we've pretreating begin sunday at noon, we had trucks on the state roa

and we're ready to go. it's going to be a very heavy wet snow we're being told. which means power outages, the one thing i implore on everybody, please stay off the roads. we cannot move the equipment around with the heavy snow if cars are stuck in the road. it's going to be a lot of hard work and plowing. we have pretreated. ready to go. it's going to be a major storm. going to start at 10:00. they tell us be over by about 8:00 or 9:00 in the morning, we have a goal in virginia. every state road passable within 48 hours, that's what we strive to do. keep your cars off the road. we got the equipment the personnel. ready to go. >> i feel like we hear this from the governor every time we have a snow storm. it's common sense but you got to mention it. let's talk about what we had last year when we saw a lot of budgets blown and supplies depleted quickly. i would assume you have that working in your favor this year.

i sat with my secretary of transportation going over budgets and so forth. he said governor, great news, we got 250 million left in our snow budget this year. i said let's knock on wood we don't need it >> this doesn't seem like a 250 million snowstorm. >> hopefully 50 to 60. but certain parts of the commonwealth will be hit. we have the equipment, but you know, you got to get them out, deployed quickly. we have plenty of salt. plenty of brine, which we've put down, and we have plenty of money. i tell people over and over, i'll go out and tour tomorrow and i'll see abandoned cars on roads and plows got to stop and get around it. stay home let us do our work >> we still have a couple hours before we start to pin down who's going to get what coming in the next hour, what's on deck tomorrow for government employees in the commonwealth? we're starting to see school

about that >> we still plan on being open here in the state. it's an interesting band. won't touch richmond area. we're looking at the heaviest snow right now is portions of the northwest part of the state. including northern stanton, but really, it's going to be northern virginia, we're looking at culpeper, it's going to get hit. in virginia, frederick north up through northern virginia, and then out to the winchester area and down to lynchburg. so right now, we have the state offices will be open. as i say it's going to start at 10:00 should be done by 8:00 tomorrow morning, i've got 7800 pieces of equipment. more than enough to help those bans of state that had been hit. as i say luckily we started treating yesterday at noon, this is the earliest we've been out with the brine. you know, we're ready to go. but just stay home tomorrow morning. and let us do our job and those plows will -- we have a goal.

ly people inside were evacuated but let back in eventually, no word on a cause. fire investigators still trying to figure out what caused a house fire in wood bridge. firefighters responded to the scene around 2:00 this morning, the home located in the 1700 block of coroner road. the fire started in the basement and spread to the back of the home. a family of five was inside but fortunately no one was hurt. talk about a closed call in prince george's county. a sidewalk collapsed where a fire truck tipped over. two volunteers inside the fire truck suffered minor injuries. in fairfax county city, former mayor, scott pleaded guilty to felony drug charges, silver thorn is accused of agreeing to give an undercover officer crystal meth put in exchange for sexual favors, free on bond but the judge romantic that day until his sentencing in june. silver thorn face up to 40 years

services to those who need us, especially the houses >> do you know what need right now? >> it was on, i can't tell you where the microphone is right here. there's a lot. sitting down get back up again and the microphone is not -- yeah. winter storm, what to expect. sue showed this earlier, we're going to keep hitting the headlines as the snow begins. right now, for some of you in northern virginia. for the district, snow arrives this evening, more specifically between 8:00 and 9:00 p.m. the rain snow line cuts down accumulations significantly. and the big change from when i was watching the storm over the weekend to now is that the rain still aims to come further north and west into the district and beyond at some point overnight. however the highest accumulation still looks to be north and west of dc and we see the best time for piling up the snow in the overnight between midnight and 7:00 a.m. two pieces of energy coming together to form the nor'easter which will strengthen off the

snow breaking out across the ohio valley and this energy across the carolinas where they saw snow this weekend is combining and even starting to produce wet weather over our area. it looks like down along the northern. is snow. places like the northern neck and down into the to delmarva will quickly change over to rain later on greatly reducing the accumulation chances. winter storm warnings in bright pink dc 95, baltimore and all of northern maryland. back across our suburbs towards winchester, leonardtown cumberland, west virginia as the wet weather advisory anne arundel county, where you will see a lot less snow and much more mixing. temperatures right now, beautiful. 43 and well above freezing in washington. this is what to expect. clouds around right now. first flakes

7:00 p.m. heavier snow showers overnight. fox futurecast shows there's that snow coming in from the south and around 9:00 p.m. we're starting to see snow south on 95 through northern virginia and then by midnight or at least 11:00 p.m. as i stop the clock, you got decent snow falling and accumulating. dc/baltimore and all northwestern suburbs, that pink line is that mix of snow sleet and rain and then rain in the northern neck. there's the pink line along 95 and there's going to be a periods overnight of sleet or even rain mixing in. as this system starts to tilt to the left. that means it's strengthening along the coast and going to produce blizzard conditions for new york and boston. for us, this is 6:00 a.m. adjusting rain really in dc if this is correct. and the models warmer solution but the got the jackpot area towards the maryland pennsylvania border of heavy

be overnight before sunrise. as the cold air gets wrapped around you see left over snow showers through the lunch hour and even in the afternoon we could have a few streamers, despite the fact everything wraps up by noon, it doesn't mean we we only have a few lingers flurries or snow showers. not much has changed. jackpot area still central maryland, hagerstown, frederick and baltimore right on the edge, dc further south and on the edge. dc what we're thinking is two inches in southeast dc, reagan national then closer to six as you get up towards bethesda, montgomery county, six inches, more like ten incheses for clarksberg, urbana and days to two inches for charles and prince george's county and annapolis probably only seeing about two, three inch, seven-day forecast, snow and mix, blustery windy cold day, despite the fact that the storm

deadly house fire in lor ton virginia. fairfax county 911, what is your emergency >> hello? >> i need a drive. >> are you inside the house >> it's my neighbor's house. i'm in the house, the garage is on fire, fire is all over the place. coming through the garage >> 5-year-old was killed in the blaze. investigators believe the boy was playing with the lighter when he accidently started it in the garage. the fire caused nearly $94,000 in damage. a deadly officer involved shooting caught on camera. started with a routine traffic stop last night in orange, california. take a look how things quickly escalated.

police flush the suspect out of the van using water hoses after he lit a cigarette holding a gas can. they were concern he was going to light himself on fire after hopping out of the van, it's gets into a scuffle with officers. you can then hear people yelling knife in the video before the suspect was shot by police. the suspect taken to the hospital where he later died. the investigation at this hour still ongoing. in the district, police need help to find a knife wielding man who assaulted someone in the northeast in january at a business on m street in northeast. surveillance video caught the man as he tried to take a coat from the to store. the clerk steps in and stops him but the suspect swipes at the clerk with a knife. police have not made an arrest and asking anyone who recognizes him to give them a call. you can win more than just money and one unique march madness bracket challenge. >> there's a lot of questions.
