raying national. 45 dulles, 47 at bmi and those winds continue to how old at this hour, we're still seeing that peak wind gusts of forensic miles an hour at reagan national as i speak. across the area you're seeing wind gusts exceed 35 miles an hour. coming down a bit in manassas and fredericksberg and luckily that wind will diminish slightly. it is so cold and over 20 degrees below normal. we barely hit at the freezing mark in washington, didn't get to 30 in, north and west, were 28 in westminster, you put the wind and cold together and get the bitter windchills, feels like it's the teens and that's as far as we got. we started off feeling like the low single digits, now 14 in hagerstown, the winds will subside but still be very cold. we had a couple of flurries earlier this afternoon.

which is very noticeable off towards the north and west. the nor'easter departed but over those relative warmer, you got substantial lake effect for upstate new york even into western pennsylvania. the same nor'easter that brought us the snow continue to move up the new england coast line, the wind will subside a bit but still breezy, temperatures fall back into the tens and 20's, win continue to have the harsh windchills as most head back to school and work. i don't think we'll see delays. the air temperature, 24 washington, 23 frederick, 23 martinsberg, and for rest of you who have to step outside tomorrow, a bit of a thawing out in our seven-day forecast, i'll have that still ahead. jim and sarah? gang member and should be considered armed and dangerous. that's the word from leesburg

>> fortunately the victim was able to escape by jumping out of a moving vehicle. one alleged abductorer was arrested. matt? >> reporter: sarah, you're right. authorities say they were searching for that second suspect. and they believe that he came right here to this exxon gas station where he tried to rob and let's take you to video now. let's show you this wanted posted. this is victor yus mentor, he has multiple tattoos on his upper torso and police say he's a known gang member with ties to the blood. now, let's take you to where this all took place, about 6:00 p.m. yesterday in this neighborhood. this is the 1400 block of campbell court. this is where a victim was forced into a vehicle. the victim told police he was able to jump out of the vehicle, police responded and were able to apprehend one suspect. but mentor escaped.

about attempted robbery at a nearby gas station and police believe he was involve and fled before they arrived. i want to show you one more picture here. late this afternoon, leesburg police sent us this mug shot and tell us this is the man arrested in connection to the abduction. he is 25-year-old melvin jenkins. once again, authorities still searching tonight, they're looking for victor yus mentor. they believe that he is armed and dangerous. they're asking anyone with information of where he might be tonight to give leesburg police a call. live in leesburg, matt ackland, fox 5 local news. a gun store once again the target of a robbery in fredericksberg. first happened last thursday at the united gun shop in rockville. the gun shop in chantilly was hit. dozens of firearms there were

now, this is surveillance video of the suspect. the break in tactical in fredericksberg tuesday morning, the footage shows a man driving a u-haul to the gun shop. the story owner says nothing was stolen. judge and jury returned a partial verdict in the 2015 robbery and murder of 15-year-old malik mercer. derrick decure was found not guilty but convicted of several firearms charged. the jury is still deciding on the charge of second degree murder. at the time of the shooting, dc police say the teen was shot for his belt as he left the metrobus in southeast. fox 5 paul wagner is live at the courthouse with the story. paul? >> reporter: hi, jim, i was in the courtroom when the jury came back in. malik's mother was sitting to the left as the jury

that mr. decure was not guilty of the robbery and first-degree murder. she did not have any obvious reaction to this, but when i talked to her outside after the jury left the courtroom, she told me that she was very surprised and upset by what happened. let's take you back to the crime scene from june of 2015. in the days after malik mercer was shot in the neck after he left a metrobus in southeast. police released this surveillance video from the bus and asked the public for help. a crime that had infuriated then police chief kathy lanier who held a news conference asking for help in identifying the three men seen getting off the bus. on 28th street southeast where it stopped, he was arrested for a red belt he was wearing and after the play from the chief, arrested 22-year-old derrick decure. but during the two-week entire, the defense claimed decure had no intention of robbing mercer

defending himself when the 16-year-old pulled a gun out of a bag he was carrying. of the jury was shown a photograph of mercer with a gun in his lap. and a witness took the stand and claimed there had been a gun in the back earlier that night. however, police say at the scene, no gun was found. the jury is now trying to decide whether decure is guilty of second degree murder or manslaughter. decure is still locked up, he is still waiting for that jury's decision to come back. but what the jury did find him guilty of is several firearms violations. carrying a pistol without a license and two other firearms violations, but they found a not guilty of all the other charges. so the jury said they were dead lock odd the second degree, manslaughter charges but the judge asked them to go back and try again. so when we know something further, we'll let you know, live at dc superior court, paul wagner fox 5 local news.

follow-up to a story fox 5 has been staying on top of. a series of viral tweets bringing national attention to an epidemic becoming more widespread in the nation's capitol missing teenagers. last week, we told you about ten black teen girls reported missing over a ten be day span. we reached out to local law enforcement to answer some of your questions and concerns and to get a better understanding of what is being done. dickerson took over as commander of dc youth and family services division. she was shocked at the number of missing girls in the city. according to dickerson the reason we're seeing so many posts from dc police is not due to an up tick, a new effort to get the word out. although some missing teens seem to be part of a

of one away. she's going to treat each and every case with the same level of service and attention, when it comes to criminal activity, one fear is sex trafficking. with so many children going missing, it is a concern. >> i just don't know what's going on but it's definitely a deeper issue. are you running away from something or to something? we just makg sure that you know, we follow up with that to make sure that any other criminal activity is not taking place. and deal with other resources that family needs. >> i just want to create some program and get some assistance from the community to try and engage, you know, this vegetable population to let them know they're valuable to the community and to respect tour bodies and mind >> she wants to make sure each missing child's photo is repeatedly posted on social media to bring this number of missing children down. >>

this fight. joining me is dereka wilson, a former police officer in virginia. thanks so much for coming in. we do appreciate it. it is interesting to see the amount of, you know, news that's coming out on social media about these missing teens. since you have your background is law enforcement. do you feel that this is run aways mostly or are we looking at a bigger issue of sex trafficking here >> i think it's a combination of both. right now, what people need to understand is that human trafficking is real. that's not happening just on a blog. it's happening on u.s. soil. whether these teens are running away from something they have no idea what's outside. >> is it mostly through social media that they're being lured in? how is this occurring, if, indeed we're thinking this is more of an up tick in human trafficking >> it is occurring on the internet. they're being lured on social media, so parents really need to monito

doing, they need to look at their smart devices, their internet. don't worry about invading their privacy, they shouldn't have any privacy, we're trying to save their lives. that's exactly how they're recruiting these youths. >> how can you really then i guess tell the difference between whether or not we're looking at run away case or a human trafficking case? is it just something that no matter what it is, it has to be taken serious >> whether these kids are running away, in our eyes, they're missing. if the parents don't know where they are, law enforcement don't know, they're missing. we have to treat every case the same. >> are we seeing a bigger problem with it here in the east coast than were we are say in the west coast or midwest, and if so, why. >> we're seeing it everywhere, but people need to understand here in the metropolitan area is considered a hub, we have

it's not just happening right here in the dmv. it's happening in chicago, in detroit. so we need our community to be vigilant. it's not the sole responsibility of law enforcement. it's law enforcement, it's the media and more importantly it's the community reporting something, they see something, they need to say something >> we hear that a lot. what are those warning signing? whether a parent or friend of the family >> you have to listen to your children and be able to communicate. we go back to the social media effort. look and see what they're doing, see how much information they're giving outlet. we tell parents create a fictitious account and see how much information your child is putting out there >> tell me a little bit more about the miss putting foundation, what it is you're a doing and how people can reach out to you for help. >> well, we started the organization in 2008, to bring awareness to missing persons of color. it's not a black issue or a white issue, it's an

♪ ♪ it's a fact of life every year millions get sick. unfortunately tens of thousands die around the country because of super bugs that are resistant to antibiotics, maryland could be the second state to ban it. what serious problem could say it cost for you? here's fox 5 alexandra limon. >> reporter: the feeling that antibiotics will prevent disease is fine and if you could prevent a

antibiotic without a consequence, there would be no problem. >> reporter: but there are consequences, car line taylor is a montgomery county farmer and the executive director of montgomery countryside alliance. >> we're finding that the overuse, the indiscriminate use of antibiotics is results in what we call super bug and they affect not just agriculture but human health. >> reporter: according to the centers for disease control and prevention, they become resistant to the antibiotic regularly given to animals in food and water and can transfer to humans when we eat the meats or are exposed to the animals in other ways. the cdc says there are 2 million people reported sick every year because of those super bugs. and 23,000 are killed. andit

healthcare system more than 55 billion dollars annually. that's why the state of maryland is considering to keep antibiotics safe act. >> the bill says you can use abilities on animals that are sick and you can use it if some are sick but you may you not give them to control an outbreak, if there's no disease present then you can't use antibiotic >> she's with the maryland team to keep antibiotics working. there are coalition that includes the hospitals association, nurses association, academy of pediatrics and other healthcare and legal organizations. and they're working to stop the indiscriminate use of abilities in farming. groups that support the use of antibiotics and live stock say the prevent diseases from break, out and keeps animals and therefore the food supply safe. but a lot of the opposition comes from the pharmaceutical companies that make the

cherry blossoms are coming to early. chose cherry blossoms could be in jeopardy because of the weather. gary mcgrady is on blossom control. >> reporter: it's not so much the cold. it's the wind. you don't feel the windchill if it's not exposed, so they say. we're freezing, mike is here. mike, what is going on? >> we have had a roller coaster this winter. and especially the last several days with the temperatures all of which start playing a little bit of havoc with the cherry blossoms. we had that mild winter. record setting warm in february. little fall spring and the cherry blossoms said, they're here, and then, you know, old man winter came roaring back >> are we in jeopardy of losing our blossomses

night below the threshold where there's damage to the blossoms. the advanced stage already mt of the way out. we're seeing damage on those. >> reporter: some of these >> some of these, the white ones right here, those are in the fifth stage, right before peak bloom, seeing a little brown on the edges. we're hoping these earlier stage cherry blossoms, they're still in their buds, hopefully protected from the brutal cold and come peak bloom, maybe fewer trees than we're used to, fewer blossom, but we expect there will be a peak bloom. >> reporter: guys came out and took samples and took them back inside, granted, we went over this afternoon and shot pictures of this, this is the science lab at the park service. they're still in that video. what are you hoping to accomplish >> what we do is take them inside, they're some of the earlier stage blossoms, take them inside where it's

fool them that it's warmer out and they will bloom hopefully in the next 24, 48 hours, we'll see when that happens we are they've been damaged, whether they're fine, they will come out. it will give us a good reading on what we can expect around the rest of the tidal basin >> i think they're the luckier of all the blossoms. >> tell us where the festivities -- peak bloom will be the 19th >> 19th and 22. fewer trees than we're expecting but still on course, we're going to get through the cold snap, get back to seasonal temperatures, and hopefully bring it home. >> reporter: has anything changed with festival >> festival kick off now saturday, originally supposed to open the welcome area today, the snow put the set up back a couple days. everything kicks off saturday. regardless of where we are in the blooms and how many

arrested. the child was not injured and released to the custody of a family friend. a massive fire rip through a montgomery county home last night. firefighters got the call in potomac. fiber starred in the chimney and went into the attic. the family made it out. no injuries reported. don't know if there's any word if the family will be able to make the back home. man accused of shooting inside a dc pizzeria in december is expected to plead guilty after reaching a deal with prosecutor, he's accused of firing shots inside comet ping-pong after driving in north carolina to investigate an online conspiracy theory. the hearing will be held march 24th. the new executive order immigration goes into effect tomorrow. today, there was a hearing for a lawsuit filed by the aclu of maryland and the national immigration law center. challenges the trump administration's temporary ban >> ronica cleary is live at the

with the legal director, karen tumlin. >> reporter: we're here with karen, the legal director. tell me about the, what happened today, you're expecting a possible ruling tonight. that's what i want to get to. tell me about your expectations. >> this morning we were in federal district court in greenbelt maryland. case we brought, international refugeee challenging the muslim ban, many are on stand by checking phones and e-mails waiting to see if our court will rule before the stroke of midnight when the new executive order >> the second executive order was unveiled. one of the things that jeff sessions said in the announcement of this new executive order is 300 people who came here as

being investigated for potential terrorist activities. they noted the important of the president to keep america safe. that is his responsibility and goal. give us your response to concern that is people have when they hear numbers and feel like a temporary ban might be helpful >> first of all, 300,000 people are being investigated. we have a basic american value here which is we don't render anyone guilty of any charge miss marina or terrorism until they've been determined and convicted in the court of law. that's really fear mongering at its best. when you look at the court documents, look at the failure of the federal government to produce evidence that refugees are dangerous. this is the most vetted and secure program. the process that refugees go

safe. we can agree what we want is the president and the agencies to keep us safe >> i know you filed the lawsuit and you want to see it ruled as unconstitutional. is there anything your organization feels is better, if you will, a partial victory, if you will, that's what care called the second executive order. do you see it in i was way a better solution or is it still just unacceptable? >> it's still unacceptable. but there are things to point out that have been improved. care is a major leader for the muslim american community. what they say extremely important. the changes made to the executive order are a result of serious push-back in the courts. where the courts said this is -- this is

immediately putting it on hold, not one court, not two, court after court. in fact, it's also a response to the american people and how it's received. we saw people take to their feet immediately in airport after airport across the country saying, this isn't who we are. we don't want this. >> reporter: if the ruling is not in your favor do you expect to see protests the way we did after the first executive order >> i definitely do. they may not be at the airports in the same way. this executive order should not have the immediate blockade at the airports we saw, that's one of the main things they were trying to fix. but absolutely. we have been so encouraged by the support that our organization and others fighting have gotten from across the community. average mergings saying americans saying this is not what we want. muslims are part of our life. and refugees are

trump towers, went further saying now the house will push for that evidence and he said this morning that the house committee right now is standing by and is going to be questioning both the justice department and the fbi itself. >> president obama wouldn't physically go over and wire tap trump towers, for you you have to decide are you going to take the tweets literally. if you are, clearly the president was wrong. if you're not going to take the tweets literally and if there's a concern that the president has about other people, other surveillance activities looking at him or his associates, either appropriately or inappropriately, we want to find that out. >> reporter: moving forward now, this is all creating problems for the us attorney in maryland, rod rosen, he's nominated as the deputy attorney general but

jeff sessions has recused himself from running any of these investigations at the justice department, so it would be the deputy attorney general, that job would be then turned to. meanwhile, over in the senate, senator lindsay graham announced at the beginning of the house -- senate judiciary hearings that he had set off a letter to the director of the fbi and in graham's word the answer that comes back to that letter could hinge on whether or not this deputy attorney general's position and confirmation moves forward. this is how graham opened up the hearing today. >> this letter was a pretty simple request. was there a warrant issued by any court anywhere in the united states allowing the surveillance of the trump campaign, trump operative during the 2016 election a

information that was used to obtain a warrant. if a warrant was requested and denied, we'd also like to know that. >> reporter: we should point out that president trump repeatedly denied any involvement between his presidential campaign and russian officials despite the fact that his first national security advisor had to resign after later admitting that he had talks with russian officials and as we mentioned his own attorney general later to had to clarify his confirmation testimony that he had spoken with a russian ambassador. we might get some answers sooner rather than later. it was learned today that the fbi director james comey will testify on capitol hill in an open hearing monday morning. live, tom fitzgerald fox 5 local news. we heard the stories about cell phone exploding. you probably never heard about this. a woman traveling last month injured after her head phones exploded oh on her face, the woman told officials she was
