6:30 pm
>> all right. welcomethon monday, high staixz on capital his as lawmaker grill the fbi about those white house wire tapping claims and also role russia may have played. >> and confirmation hearings underway for the president pick for supreme court. as you can see from the rundown over there on the side of the screen these are top talkers at 6:30 we invite you guys to join the conversation and usual tweet us that #5 at 6:30
6:31 pm
>> i have been authorized by the department of justice to confirm that the fbi as part of our counter intelligence mission is investigating russian government efforts to interfere in 20 16 presidential election and that includes investigating nature of any lengths between individuals associated with the trump campaign and russian government and whether there were any coordination between campaign and russia's sglevrts there was a big bomb shell. head of fbi confirmed agency is investigating russia medaling in the 2016 election and ties to trump campaign. he also discredited trump's campaigns that president barack obama wired tapped him. a lot of things came out of today's hearing. >> and there was also the fear or concern by some people who said what if russia was doing something to benefit the democrats in the election and if what we heard so far seems unlikely but the focus
6:32 pm
investigating any possible outcome here. >> yep. >> katie williams at the hill is us with tonight and will break it all down for us. >> all right. guys. >> any big surprises today that you took away. >> i think the big surprise was director comey's decision to go ahead and publicly confirm fbi is intactest having whether or not there was coordination in between the trump campaign and russia in lead up to the election. one of the things about the revelation is that in many ways it raised more questions than it has answered. and director comey was very careful not to either confirm or deny whether the president himself is target of this investigation or to be fair any other individual associated with the campaign. democrats pressed him repeatedly on a number of former associates that have been tied to russia in some way or another and to all of those questions director comey's answer was a stiff no comment. >> and katie later in the day we'll get to the press briefing later in the show and when asked about
6:33 pm
response from shawn spacer when they talked about paul manfor the the former trump campaign manager he played a limited role. it seems like we're still getting two different answers here. >> yeah the white house was very care actual to down play the role of sort of the three major figures here that have drawn scrutiny. paul manfor the former campaign chairman and carter page former for policy advisor and both of those guys really the white house thought to distance themselves from them. and as well did the chairman of the house intelligence committee when he was pressed by reporters after the hearing today and i've heard of paul moneyfor the and other guys the democrats brought up during the hearing i never heard of them before. >> the big take away fbi director dispute zoneald trump's xlaimz president barack obama wire tapped him.
6:34 pm
soto say. >> with respect to the president's tweets about alleged wire tapping directed at him by the prior administration i have no information that supports those tweets and we have looked carefully inside the fbi. the department of justice asked me to share with you that the answer is the same for the department of justice and all its components and the department has no information that supports those tweets. >> what was the take away from that. did that leave more questions and white house doing double talk there. >> it's a very carefully worded answer and i would say the big take away from that is that it could deepen what we've already seen as a bit of a rift in between the fbi and white house. and when the story -- when trump's tweets originally came out and when he initially made the accusation his tread ses ror wire tapped jump towersome media reports directed that comey was flabbergasted by those allegations and wanted to
6:35 pm
denied authorization to do that. he missed to get that for today. and but it does not exactly herald a warm and fuzzy lessship between the president and director of fbi. >> what are people saying about comey's duration with this administration because it seems that going in when we were back and forth on the hillary clinton issue and investigating again and cleared it seems like there was already tenuous relationship tw president trump was even elected. >> and president trump directly benefitted some of comey's disclosure about secretary clinton's email sort of in the lead up to the election particularly october revelation that fbi found more emails that might be pertinent to that investigation. and so, in january it was reported that the president had asked comey to
6:36 pm
seen strive in that relationship. the white house asked fbi to rebut a "new york times" article that had found that claims intelligence officials found links with fbi and russia and sortly there after you saw trump go on twitter and hammer fbi for being unable to stop leakers. so, now, the big question is, how long is comey going to last. he does ultimately serve at discretion of the president and now the white house said today during the briefing that the president still has faiming in the fbi director. so we'll see. >> we while see indeed. katie williams great to you have on. thanks for copping in tonight. >> thanks, guys. >> moving on tonight republicans say they're confident judge neal goresuch will receive. >> and supreme court reporter for washington examiner joins us. ryan you wereed in the hearing room this afternoon and any big surprises and take away from today's testimony. >> i think the
6:37 pm
their hands at what is coming tomorrow and previewed attacks on judge gorsuch and previewed him as someone who is a friend of corporate interests and no friend of enemy of the little guy and i think what we say was senators like dick durban talking about how gorsuch was part of the plot to takeover the judiciary and i think that's the kind after tacks we're going to see going forward tomorrow which is when the real grilling sessions begin and when judge coresuch faces q and a from senators. >> we awe a lot of ads coming up from people who oppose neal goresuch to call senators and say you oppose him and we have not heard much from him yet and it seems though democrats move for ward and it's not as if this is not -- you know it's very easy for the republicans to push this through. rear laelry putting up a fight. what could derail the nomination. >> it could be interesting to watch over the
6:38 pm
whether judge gorsuch said something to use as a weapon against him. right now there's a large effort from the republican infra struck stur, gop, white house, outside groups coordinating all to put pressure on democrats to make sure there is not a moment that comes out this and to make sure these red state democrats in states trump won in owe 2016 up for reelection and senate come 20 18 feel the pressure to support judge gorsuch and whether or not they can prevent that from happening and have influence on this process it's going to be interesting to watch over the next couple days. how the preparation for this hearing how they've been getting goresuch ready for. because they're in the minority will that do any good here. >> it's possible they could do. it however it seems like in this instance the calculus on this part if they do it
6:39 pm
could haunt them later and someone like beginsburg may step down to leave the court and in that instance it could be problematic for them when they're trying to del president trump selecting replacement for her. >> there is no doubt that judge goresuch is strict constitutionalist and a lot of people are saying he's very much in the mold of antonin scalia. you put out 28 games and judge gorsuch was on the list an they had mrepttive time to dig into his record. thus far what we've seen from opponents coming out there to antagonize him is to show
6:40 pm
cases not necessarily taking issue with the rulings themselves and the way he arrived at his decisions but the people affected by them. which has been really interest tactic to watch for democrats this come. >> ryan loveless as you mentioned fireworks should begin tomorrow and we'll be watching. thanks for copping in. >> thank you. >> mean time tonight "fox5" learned department of homeland security and immigration and customs enforcement put montgomery county on notice for not properly enforcing new immigration laws. >> accusing the county of not cooperating with ice detainers and request for notification when illegal immigrants are arrested in the country. tom fitzgerald is live tonight with the latest easton this one, tom. >> shawn, jim, good evening we do need to frame out why this is such a hot topic in montgomery county. and you were no doubt aware of the fact of what happened here and where we are right now. and rockville high school last week. a 14-year-old girl was raped and two students are under
6:41 pm
arrest. one of the 18 years has ice detainer on him at this point. and now, the question arose today while a news conference was going on by county council president roger berliner. as you know, lawmakers often want to dictate the course of how these news go form. today the council president was out there initially to talk about the county budge eliminate. and presidential focus of this news conference i have to tell you changed quickly when questions about immigration and specifically how montgomery county policies towards immigration may or may not have affected what happened here last week. now, at one point a reporter asked the council president ft.
6:42 pm
county was somehow codling illegal immigration here in any way. council president roger berliner had a very sharp reaction to that question. and shot back that in fact he said categorically that montgomery county in his words was not a sanctuary city and despite the fact we should tell you again and again and again the democratic leaders in this county have taken a hard line against many trump administration policies. and earlier today ice did put montgomery county on a list of places that are not cooperating with immigration and customs enforcement and specifically in regards to detainers we've been talking about and this is how council president berliner responded when we asked him about this today in this news conference. >> people are angry. people are nervous. people are concerned
6:43 pm
parents are concerned. i've gotten some very ugly emails. accusing of us of being a sanctuary county how could we possibly do that? okay. which is why i go out of my way to say, with the greatest respect. we not. >> now, we should also tell you montgomery county was not the only jurisdiction in the d.c. area that wound up on this ice list. prince george county was there as well. and shawn and jim, we can guarantee this at least in the short term, this is not going away. we spoke to numerous amounts of montgomery county parents who send their kids to the schools here. and they had very harsh questions. not only about their kids' safety but what it was that montgomery county school officials knew about the immigration status of these two individuals. that are under arrest right now and we
6:44 pm
are not going anywhere any time soon. when she take all flix are local this droyvz to the local live. tom fitzgerald thank you very much. today, first day of spring. how about that. 52 right now. gary mcgrady quick question. we were spoiled by all the warm weather and is this normal now? >> we're not quite -- normal for today, for instance, would be about 57 degrees or so. so we're not quite normal today. we tried to get there but the clouds came in and just kind of stopped the temperatures in the 40s and 50s and northwest it's still chilly and temperatures up there in the upper 40s and we're 52 olding here in town and id middle to upper 50s to the south. there's clouds in place now and that will stay that way during the evening hours and stay that way during the overnight hours and late this evening and chance 10, 11:00 and maybe as late at midnight showers from the north west. we're sear them on radar now and tlar a long way away. the mountains will need a lot of that moisture come
6:45 pm
of that moisture comeing across. tonight's lows 46 in town and lower 40s in northwestern suburbs and then for tomorrow hey tomorrow is not too terribly bad we'll have morning showers possible and we'll have morning clouds. but afternoon sunshine look at that. temperature up to 64 degrees and we'll get colder though on thursday and i mean wednesday and thursday temperatures will come back down and winds kickp a little bit. it won't feel springish look here on saturday. 73 degrees. and hey, hey, that's what we're talking about. next chance of good rain comes up on sunday. shawn, jim, back to you guys. >> thank you g mack. >> you get into that vacation mind-set. a lot of people go on vacation from time to time but president is relaxing a little much. pull of the people comes back 6:30

>> and well since the president has been elected he's reportedly visited his golf courses 11 times and played own at least ten of those visits. >> and now he's catching heat for hitting links so much especially when they frequently slammed president obama for doing the same thing. ronica cleary with more on the topic that has people preponderance talking tonight. ray ronica. >> reporter: shawn, jim, it definitely has people talking. i mean to say he criticized president obama, i actually think that would be under statement. i mean, it was as if the president truppville fewed president obama for amount of time he says he spent on the golf course. at one time in the campaign he said that he would not have time to golf if he came the president. well, now, you know those reports you cited they're saying -- showing that the president is finding time. of course, the white house is respokening by saying that the president is often using that time to work to
6:49 pm
what they say he does best and it did come up in today's white house briefing take a listen to what shawn spacer had to say. >> he saw him utilize this as an opportunity with prime minister avay to help foster deeper relationships in southeast asia and asia rather and have a growing relationship that's going help u.s. interests. how you use the game of golf is something he talked b secondly, you know, we went to down to nippy cap net meeting two weekends ago at his club in virginia and i remember so many people jumping to the conclusion he's going and playing golf. because us go somewhere -- on i couple occasions he conducted meeting there and had phone calls and so just because he heads there doesn't mean that's what's happening. >> and now we took too twitter to get your thoughts with the dwit p
6:50 pm
you're fairly divided. 43% of you said it's not a big deal. and if he golfs while in office, 5% of you said it's a bad use of time. a lot of you weighed in with tweets on thoughts as well which we love to hear. and love to get your perspective and thoughts. and another topic that came up, when we are talking about how the president is using his time, well, in light of the budget that came out last week, there's been talk and it was even before the budget came out, talk about the cost associated with donald trump's seemingly regular trips to mar-a-lago in florida and does he plan to take fewer trips especially because we're talking about so many cuts in the budget? listen to spicer's reaction to this. >> i think that is vast reach to suggest. i mean the president -- presidents always travel ape think the president wherever he goes he carries the apparatus of the white house with us. that's something that happens. the president will continue to go and travel around the country
6:51 pm
and have meeting to solve neighboring's problems. >> well there you go. just a little reaction from the white house on president's personal use of time. weigh in use that 5@630 take that poll we love to hear from you jim, shawn. >> thank you ronica it's interesting to see the difference in presidents people in glass houses should not throw stones, different once you're in the office. >> yeah. >> i and i think aa lot of people were if he were not going places he owned would it be different. there would be outrage on one side really doesn't matter. >> if he was not so critical of president obama for golfing, then we would not -- >> and that'ser refutable, that's not fulling it from somewhere. he said that. >> would you spend thousands of dollars to look at ivanka trump. >> she's george us why wouldn't you? >> it's the newest trend in plastic surgery we'll
