handcuffed a man while he was holing his daughter in his arms plus, lollipops filled with illegal drugs and check this out, a flying car out for a test run, your news starts right now but we begin with the fast& moving storms that tore through the area tonight. this is a live look at a tree that came tumbling down tonight in silver springs. this is on linden lane, fortunately no one was hurt. also breaking tonight, the storms damaged a maryland highrise apartment building. it's on metro road in adele t phi. crews discovered cracks. the 20 investor building has been he vac wailed. we have a crew headed to the scene. we will bring it to you you live as soon as they arrive. let's first get to sue palka on tonight's wild weather. i was out when the weather came through montgomery county. it came through reallyas

dramatic clouds like you see in the picture over to my left. the wall clouds, the corkscrew bottom as they got dramatically lower. as the storms approached the beltway they found some energy and they went severe. were warned for the district, prince george's county and montgomery county. this his the thing that scarce me the most about our strong storms that come through, falling tree, fallen limbs. fortunately no one was hurt with this one. we did get a report of a gust of 57 miles per hour in beltsville area. so that is also very significant and it is strong enough with these trees now fully leaved out that they're going to be coming on down. this damage in silver springs. so many of you sent fantastic pictures in tonight. this is the wall cloud, always a sign of a strengthening and severe potential storm moving through your area. i want to show you where the storms are tonight now. by the way there is that report of the thunderstorm wind damage again. that came in at eight:06 in

near the intersection of linden lane and warren street. it was blocking linden lane. the good news that i a have to report to you is that most of the storms have now crossed to the other side of the bay. they're still getting a lot of lightning up across parts of northern maryland april we see a few lingering showers here and there, but as we put this in motion you can see that they moved directly west to east and then got real strong right after they crossed the bell way. now, listen we're also continuing to watch up through pennsylvania because there's another batch up there. you can see that north of pittsburgh, is a lit of that going to hold today together? we saw that happen last night and maybe bring a few more showers through. i'm going to take you through with the futurecast. around two in the morning we could still pop one or two more showers. maybe some areas of fog as well. but because we are going right back up into the low 80s tomorrow we could see a few

thunderstorms bubbling up tomorrow afternoon especially because a frontal boundary will be crossing the area later in the day. heads up for that. we'll have the timing and did you know we're still expecting a lot of rain this weekend and much cooler temperatures. we'll be detailing that coming up a little bit later as well. shawn. thank you, sue. a prince george's county county substitute teacher who also served as a youth coach is facing child pornography charges. investigatorses say they found images and video on his electronic devices. marina maracco has the latest tonight from capital heights. >>reporter: this is 34 year old christopher spates. he's a long time substitute teacher here at brad bring heights elementary school and a local youth basketball coach for south county sports academy. he was arrested here this morning at this capital heights home where he lives with his mother. this evening no one answered the door. but inside investigators say they ceased

and computer linked to a drop box account police say was the catalyst of a five-month long investigation. on the digital cloud, the maryland state police computer crimes unit says they found numerous child pornography videos. the description of the videoses too graphic to share, but investigators believe the children in those videos were as young as seven years old. prince george's county public schools are currently on spring break. but tonight we've received this statement from the district. it reads, quote, pgpgs is aware that substitute teacher christopher spates has been arrested. we will cooperate fully with law enforcement in its vague. due to the nature of the claims krits toafer spates will no longer serve the school district. any beaver of behavior that brings harm to a child will not be tolerated in any way by pgpps over the past year we have increased changes to ensure student safety and a safe environment for all

students. the islamic state claimed responsibility for a deadly shooting in paris today. a gunman opened fire in the middle of a busy district. he killed a police officer and seriously wounded two others. police shot the gunman. tonight they're trying to figure out if he acted alone or had help. they gave him an alien whys that implied he was belgium or once lived in belgium. >> two manassas men are being hailed heros after rescuing two boys from a burning home. it happened yesterday at this townhouse on brnt brent on woods drive. fox5's lauren demarco spoke with one of the men tonight and joins us live now with the story. lauren. >>reporter: the family who lives in this home was renting out the basement. there were several people inside at the time. they were able to get out okay when this fire broke out, but there were two boys essentially home alone in the other part of the house. they were trapped on the second floor and neighbors

what was happening. i just saw- smoke. sa team a torres and other neighbors shocked to see smoke pouring from a townhouse on brent on wood drive. her father was just returning home from work. he showed us photos present the scene and says when he ran up there were two young boys trying to get out of a second story wind over? a. i saw three people. they jumped over here. i said you can't jump you broke your leg. torres works for a tree trimming company and ran to grab the 20-foot ladder that he stores in his background. you were there before the firefighters. >> before. you think too much it's too late. you want to do it quas, quicker. he and another neighbor were able to use the ladder to hept kids to safety. but then another tense moment when one boy ran inside the front door to free his dog. >> i go inside to take care of my dog. >> fortunately he made it back

the family had another dog which did not survive. they say torres and the other men who helped were the heros. they made the choice to put their lives on the line as well to essentially give a helping out out to a neighbor. >> do you feel like a hero? a. he didn't know it at the time, but one of the boys torres helped goes to school with his daughter. >> i feel proud of him that he helped them. he didn't hesitate. again, the home right now board up. the family who lives here being assisted by the red cross with a place to stay while it's fixed, repaired. whether or not they can move in will remain to be seen. the cause of the fire still under investigation. meantime the city of manassas tells us they do plan to recognize torres and the other man who helped. live in manassas, lauren demarco, fox5 a local news. >> new at ten, clean up efforts are underway at the reagan building after a portion of

garage ceiling collapsed. these are photos tweeted by d.c. fire and ems. the incident happened around five a p.m., one car was damaged, but fortunately no one was hurt. there's no word yet on what caused that celling to fall down. the head of metro has a brand new plan to save the troubled transit agency but it has a huge price check. paul wiedefeld wants local governments a dedicated funding source to donate $5,000 a year for capital projects. he wants to outsource some of the projects that the union currently handles. whether it field says delays in his plans will delay the progs they made with the safetrack repairs. it's just recognition the 40 billion-dollar investment that we made, that we cannot let that deteriorate any further or you see what happens as we've seen over the last few years, are the slide we've been on, that will get steeper and

>> we're back now with the news of a drug bust at dulles international airport. us customs agents ceased more than one pound of heroin on friday from a man arriving on a flight from el salvador. officials say the heroin was concealed inside of lollipops. the man carrying the drugs requested entry to us as a courier on business. after questioning the man authorities determined he was an unaware ak \police\police so he was not criminally charged. new images tonight of the suspectses in that a.m.ored drug robbery in the district. this happened yesterday morning along fifth street northwest. two men with assaultif

the driver was carrying and took off in a car driven by a third suspect the catch is police say the bag the crooks stole was actually empty. if you recognize these men, call police. that's a metro transit police officer trying to handcuff a man while he was holding his daughter in his articles. investigators say that man leo bore objection to the form refused to pay his fair. he told us the station manager knew him and i a loud him to pass through the gait and he never threatened the officer he told me to go up there. i said i'm already going upstairs there's no point of me going upstairs if you grab me. how a.m. i going to go up the steps she said i can go through the gait, but you never once asked her. she even came between us. bore a.m. is now charged with unlawful entry, fair evasion. metro says the case will be reviewed to make sure procedures

>> new knit an increase in ms13 gang activity was among the community's top concern hosted by the chief prince william reports. >>reporter: the conversation with the chief and the community happened right here at old bridge elementary school in lake ridge. the second question in was about the m13 gang and the growing problem taking place here in prince william county. the chief said that it all starts with education, awareness and enforcement and help from the community. i understand they're getting bigger in the county. lake ridge resident lan a toby's question about ms13 gang activity came less than five minutes after they opened the floor toes request. i'm just concerned. no doubt in my mind that the police are trying their best to, you know, contain them and keep

the best we can to make sure we're putting the rit resources through enforcement but you also have to education. you have to have information going to all the stakeholders and you do everything you can within your power to come up with strategies to make a difference. >> a very brutal gang that originated in el salvador with strong roots in los angeles has developed a strong presence fl northern virginia in recent years, including in prince william county. we need to work with our partners, both at the local law enforcement level and the federal level and we do that here in northern virginia. police say they've seen gang and ms13 activity in the county within the last year. it is a concern and the gang unit is working in cooperation with northern virginia task force to address it when it occurs. it takes the community to make this effort successful. the crowd inside old bridge elementary school was a melting pot of concerned residents connect

catch. a baby thrown from a burning building. there's thick smoke so it's hard to say. a man inside was holding his baby, the firefighter up on the ground, held h up his arms and signaled for the man to toss the child down. >> he caught it like a football pad. i said, wow, that was a remarkable site just to see something like that. the firefighter by the way, a ten year veteran. he credited his great training for that rescue. thank you goodness he was there well, tonight students at seneca valley high school took to the stage with poetry and touching essays, their mission to combat the sigma of mental illness. show is called this is my brave we sent our photographer paul lester to check out this powerful production. this is my brave started as a creative project where we were encouraging people from the community to come forward and share their stories on stage and creative expre

illness used to be the only thing about p me but it was a stepping stone who i've become. i don't keep my meant l al illness a secret anymore. to encourage the kids to come forward it was all about, you know, getting them to realize that by sharing their stories they were going to helping so many of their peers know that they're not alone, that we all go through these types of ires and when we can open up there is help out there and to not be afraid. deer diary, today was the worst day of my life, the day that will define for me ever, but tonight the group of students organizing were doing it for their senior project and so they kind of lead the effort to recruit some of the students and then we pulled in some students from other schools. >> i found comfort from the blood from the cuts i carved into my skin. when you get a paper cut, you say ouch. you forgive yourself because it was an accident. cutting yourself on purpose, you won't forgive yo

>> this is fox5 local news at 10. thirty. welcome back, it's ten:30 i'm jim lokay and i'm sarah simmons starting off our top stories fast, strong moving storms swept through awr other bringing down trees and knocking power. people who live on an apartment building in adelphi were evacuated after heavy winds and rain pounded the building. screws discovered cracks in the bricks and

crackses on a few upper floors. fox5's marina maracco on her way there right now. we'll check in with her when she arrives. meantime let's get an update on all this willed weather we've been having with sue palka. we're blahed those storms were out of here. they got intense as they approach the beltway. threes the new damage report in adelphi. that came in at about eight:15 at the same time there was a severe thunderstorm warning in entire region. we do know that augusta 54 miles an hour was measured in the beltsville area. enough to do damage. we'll see some pictures coming out of here in just a few minutes with marina. we also know a large tree came down. we believe there were others. h this h one came down in sill sprer spring and it has been blocking one of the roadways there around linden lane and i believe warren. they'll get that cleaned up hopefully before morning. what we really want to know is this activity out of here tonight and yes, for the most part any strong

townhouse. lauren demarco live in manassas with this one tonight. hi, lauren. hey there, two young boys were trapped in the second story of this home when the fire broke out yesterday evening. two neighbors came to their aid. they put up ladders and were able to get the boys to safety. everyone else inside of the home was okay, but displaced. red crosses is helping them find a new place to stay. ate people involved fl we're going to talk to one of the men who helped save those boys. you will hear that coming up at 11 1 #. jim. and developing tonight, french police investigating a deadly shooting in paris. a gunman opened fire near a popular tourist destination killing a police officer and isis has claimed responsibility. authorities are trying to figure out if the gunman acted alone. fox's lauren blanchard with the latest tonight. >>reporter: a deadly police shooting in paris this evening leaving at least one officer dead. and now the terror group

isis claiming responsibility. it looks like another terrorist attack and what can you say, it just never ends. president trump finding out about today's oversees attack just before a joint press conference with the vice-president of italy a loan gunman opened fire on shoppers in a popular shopping district in paris killing one and wounding two others. moments later he was shot to death by responding officers. i think the police officer was killed on the spot. his colleagues fired back and killed the individual. the gunman who is now being flagged as an extremist was also known by the secret service. officials have provided no other details about the attacker, nor have they provided a motive. we will be absolutely vigilant, especially in regards to the electoral pros. everyone will understand in this moment that my thoughts are with the family of the police officer who was killed and toward the relatives of the wounded police officers. today's shooting comes three days befe

>> we're following breaking news right now out of prince george's county county where a highrise building has been damagedded after those strong storms blew through earlier. fox5's marina maracco just got to the scene. what are you seeing so far there, marina. >>reporter: well, about 50 percent of this billing has been displaced. residents out here right now and you can see the scene here because prince george's county fire on the scene trying to assess the damage. i actually have with me a spokesperson for prince george's county fire mark brady mark, first,ly you thought this was more of a structural situation, but it seems like things are better tonight and hopefully allowing these residents to go back in. we hope so. when this storm roled through at about

pressurized some spaces and pushed out some walls not causing structural damage, but cosmetic to drywall. we had a broken window or two, some window blinds are ruffled up. some strong winds entered this building and somehow pressurized confined is enough to push out the walls. two buildings of the presidential towers off here of presidential tower. do you think they'll be a able to go back in tonight. >> we have engineers checking inside. they found everything we found that everything appears cosmetic. there's 500 apartments total and we've displaced 200 of those people from the upper floors. most of the damage with the wind traveling up that's when it pressurized and caused some walls to expand. pretty quick storm here. it seems like also things here are wrapping up for now. you

fight of his life. there is a site called d.c. metro theater arts and for joe markowitz it was started a few years ago. call his love letter to d.c. vibrant scene. to me theater in the area is quite out tanning. people don't know bit. all the famous people. i can't drop a name with him, but what he already has done a pod cast with him or interviewed them or knows them personally and i rarely write about a young actor and he'll say i helped that actor out when he was 12. john salt ^berg is part of the actors that keep joel's site running. a few months ago to keep that site going changed dramly when joel found out he as als, lieu gear ig's disease. in a perfect world you would be runninghi

forever. als is not a fun thing. there's very little medicine. why he's sharing his story is pretty simple. he says when his time comes he hopes that d.c. metro theater arts lives on and his friends are trying to make sure that happens. a group of writers, some 30 local writers and as i say there's more than 80 came together in a room and we're building the infrastructure to carry on, which ain't easy. i don't know how many joels there are. i think he clones himself and he works 24 hours a day it seems. some of my friends are not thrilled i'm not talking so much. my job. i'm working my ass on the site. >> coming up at

brady as we talked to msm on the scene it seemed to be some kind of pressure problems from very strong winds. as we do know as this came through prince george's county, there was evidence of winds that gusted between 50 and 60 miles an hour some windows popped and 20 stories, and i'm glad to know that most people will be getting back in there tonight. the storms are out of here. part of the reason the storms cooked up the heat and the humidity we had around this area. we got up to 82-degrees. bwi around 79-degrees. we haded some early morning showers and then broke for the day. lots of sunshine. there's an extra piece tomorrow we will have the days in the 80s, but notice there is cooler air. we'll start in the 80s we'll probably see a few more thunderstorms. we can't rule out a shower activity coming down from pennsylvania and a then cooler

widespread rain coming in for the weekend. that's the way it's looking. here are the weather headlines. we're back in the 80s tomorrow. low 80s. we may see another round because of the cold front that will be approaching during the day tomorrow. that slides through our area and stalls to the south. maybe some rounds that will begin on saturday. we'll watch the storm track because we're not sure how far the front will get and when the next storm. this drpped some heavy rain, too, but it was really about the gusty winds earlier in the day dl had been some reports of hail with this. i'm sure that others have had some trees come down. we rvet haven't seen any reports of them. if you can pass them along, we would appreciate it. the storms over here mostly over delaware and northern maryland we have one

two pushing out towards prince george's county. here's what we're much whatting for later tonight because we're clearing out a little bit right now and we could briefly some fog with that and then we have to see if any of this activity up towards pennsylvania holds together. last night we had the same situation. it produced rain this morning. so be ready just in case. let's look at the futurecast to see how it's handling this tonight. again it wants to kind of scoot some showers across the northern counties here in the overnight hours. maybe that can get a little more vigorous at 8:00 in the morning still seeing a few more showers here for front royal clouds around again tomorrow morning. i'd grab the umbrella because you may not need it in morning but you'll likely need in it afternoon. because of heat we'll bubble up and have a few more shower storms during the day. into saturday we start with a few showers potentially saturday morning but more

the afternoon and as we go into saturday night some of the rain could be a lot heavier and a lot mere widespread again depend oght the track of the storm that will be passing by to our south still pretty mild and still humid. 68-degrees from d.c. sixty-two for winchester. won't be a cool night that's for hur, but check out the temperature trend with the average high being 68 we're well above it tomorrow at 83. saturday then we begin the drop off to 65-degrees as our storm system is going to be approaching. sunday may only top out at around 60-degrees. again, not sure what time tops off by sunday. it could be over by noon, but if the storm track is different it could be a little bit different. here's the system that we'll be watching for the weekend, again a little different scenario because this will be much more substantial rain and that track will matter for the rain totals and the rain cut off time on sun. here's what we're going for for the weekend right now. we're going 65 on saturday with showers developing maybe as early as the

their games in prime time, five to be exact. the only time this team is getting to be getter in prime time games is by playing. sunday, october 2:18 p.m. dave car, one of the best. the music is pumped. the following monday another game against the chiefs the skins one and eight all time against kansas city. three weeks later another monday night game at the eagles. then a rarity, back to back games on thursday night starting with the first of home game on thanksgiving. that will be a tough ticket to get hosting the giants eight:30 p.m. also mark consecutive thanksgiving games for the first time since '73, '74. the next thursday, november 30 a trip to l dallas against the cowboy, eight:25 p.m. so i wanted to know what initial thoughts on the schedule, jim in i'm just curious
