last night packing heavy rain also high winds. and now this morning parts of the region are cleaning up after those april showers. melanie will have more on that in just a minute but first tucker is here with our first check of the forecast. hello. >> hey those are april severe thunderstorms last night. >> more than showers. >> little more than a shower. >> exactly. might do that again later today. that's why we're a little concerned about this afternoon. 66 now in washington. winds are calm. that live shot we're starting to get break in the clouds if we get that sunshine we're going to not only build the temperatures but we'll build the possibility of some thunderstorms this afternoon. couple early showers. those are fading off to our east and to our north and as we look out to the west, little complex of showers out here and again that's the actual front when it arrives later this afternoon and we get some daytime heating. we may pop a few scattered thunderstorms that could be on the strong side just like last evening. and just to give you a heads up the timing will be earlier than yesterday of the its it looks likes mid to late afternoon would be the time frame for some of those thunderstorms. you can see the bigger picture there you see the shower complex out in west virginia, western maryland we'll watch that. otherwise warm, a little

13 hours after this storm. we're told that they should get this power back on to this part of the community win the hour. we hope. i want to you kind of take look. i'm not sure if you can see it or not, but where the presidential towers are there way in the background, that's where we were broadcasting from there's a little communty in front of it. those sand colored apartments as well. so we have had damage reports starting about 8:15 last night starting at presidential towers. then the video that you just showed little while ago with all the downed trees and cars, that was in this apartment complex in the center and then coming straight up here across riggs road and if you even look down edwards road there, you can see more damaged trees, and then even following down along riggs road and up riggs road as well all the way to adelphi road we're seeing even more damage there. i don't know, i also just noticed here over at the corner of the golden bull restaurant you

as well things that may have been damaged by the wind. so certainly at this point what we can tell it was just a very strong thunderstorm. over the presidential towers that's where people talked about somehow the inside of the building when this storm came through became pressurized and response crews even saw like the building buckling outward with that pressure that was inside ripping off some drywall from inside of the buildings. that was incredible. and then folks when we talked to at the presidential park those lower condominiums, they said as well things just became black all of sudden heavy rain they couldn't see anything outside and just hearing these very loud wooshing sounds. you know we checked with our weather folks earlier they told us about 40 to 50-mile an hour winds coming through here. but certainly the cleanup is going to take quite sometime but fortunately nobody was injured. live here in adelphi, melanie alnwick, fox5 local news. >> good news there. all right, mel, thank you. the other big story everyone is talking about this morning actually takes us

paris that's where we're learning more about the gunman who shot and killed a police officer in paris. we've learned that karim cheurffi was detained in february for threatening police and then freed because of lack of evidence. he was also convicted in 2003 of attempted homicide and shootings on two police officers. police shot and killed cheurffi after the shooting. isis has claim responsibility for yesterday's deadly shooting. meanwhile president trump spoke out about this tragic event on twitter saying, another terrorist attack in paris. the people of france will not take much more of this. it will have a big effect on the presidential election. ♪ speaking of president trump, he is expected to sign three executive orders today all at the treasury department the first directs the agency to review part of dodd frank that let's the fed liquidate large failing financial firms during a crisis as alternative to bankruptcy and direct the agency to review expensive process that chooses which non-bank firms could threaten the financi

and finally review of significant tax reel regulations issued back in 2016 that imposes burdens on taxpayers. another black eye for prince george's county public schools. one of its substitute teachers in trouble with the law. >> police say some disturbing video of children was found on his phone. fox5's annie yu is live at brad bury elementary where that teacher work. annie. >> reporter: hey good morning to all of you. this has been five-month long investigation, and finally yesterday investigators were able to arrest christopher spates in his capitol heights home. he lives there with his mother and he's nouse facing multiple pornography child pornography charges. let's get to picture of 34-year-old christopher spates. he was a long time teacher here at brad bury heights elementary school. he was a substitute teacher here for several years. he was also a youth basketball coach for south county sports academy, and inside spate's home police found several devices that they s

stored on them. and so they've seized his iphone, i-pad an computer linked to a drop box account that police say spurred this five might have month long investigation on the digital cloud the maryland state police computer crimes unit they found number of child porn videos details too graphic we can't share them with you but it is believed that the children in these videos were as young as seven years old. now this week prince george's county public schools they are on spring break. but in a statement school officials say that they are aware of the arrest and that spates will no longer serve the school district. they also added "over the past year we have made significant changes to increase students safety and remain committed to ensuring a quality education in a safe environment for all students". again, spates is facing multiple child pornography charges, and we know that he could be facing even more according to police and so he is due in court next month on may 15th for a preliminary hearing where he'll face a judge. that's the very latest from capitol heights, maryland, annie yu

>> annie, real quick. how was this discovered? do we have any idea. >> reporter: yeah, so it all started with a tip. the social networking company drop box noticed that one of its users was storing these types of photos on the drop box account, and so they alerted the center for missing and he can polited children and then it was the center that ultimately contacted state police and from that the five-month long investigation took off. >> okay. i didn't realize drop box had that capability. >> good for them. >> it does make sense. annie, thank you. in my goodness. we're glad this investigation is underway now and hopefully will come to fruitful end. also the news this morning last hour fox5 news morning we chatted with d.c. acting police chief peter newsham he joined us in studio to discuss a range of topics. how the recent departure of a police chief could change the way police officers are supervised the short staffing issues as more officers retire and the

now that all d.c. officers have them. listen to what he had to say. >> i think the body worn cameras are a good thing. you know, we have the largest body worn camera deployment in the country as of december when we rolled out the second half of our cameras. and one of the things that we're doing right now is we are are evaluating the effectiveness of those cameras. when we initially rolled out the cameras, we only rolled out half of them. and the reason we did that is so we could study the half of the officers that have the cameras as opposed to the half that don't. and then you can measure the effectiveness whether or not it's having an impact on like you say on community relations whether it's having an impact on officer's use of force, whether it's having an impact on reducing complaints against police officers. so all of that information when the study is completed should be available in the early summer. we'll be able to share that with you. >> chief newsham also discussed department has enjoyed including having the lowest level of crime last year that the city has seen in more than a decade

dc's driver's license are changing again and that's because apparently the rest of the world need as geography lesson city government did s ditching the district of columbia. it will go back to reading washington, d.c. now the changes come after numerous reports have issues with the card stemming from airports to football stadiums to concession stands. people were confused by the wording and thought the district of columbia referred to the foreign country of columbia. despite the difference in the spelling there and the fact that d.c., you know, is the capital of the united states. i find that story incredibly disturbing. >> i do too. >> right. come on. >> district of columbia. >> d.c. >> i mean whatever makes it easier for, um, residents of the district to move around and not be hassled and not have to explain. >> doesn't every eighth grade across the nation come to the district of columbia. >> yes. >> you would think you would know by the time you're old enough. any way. >> apparently not. it is infuriating. >> when you think about the

>> you can't hold him against his will. go ahead. >> bleep, bleep. >> get that baby. no! >> running with a baby in his arms right there. it's metro police transit officer trying to happened cuff a man while he was holding his young daughter in his arms. investigators say that leon born refused to pay his fair and threatened an officer. >> but he says that's not what happened. fox5's bob barnard is live at congress heights metro station with more on his side of the story. bob, what do you know? >> reporter: well, maureen, this happened wednesday morning little bit before 10:00 a.m. here at the congress heights metro station off alabama avenue southeast, and mr. bore ram says he was actually told he could ride the train with his daughter without paying. we'll show you the video again. it was recorded by a fellow metro passenger, and what you basi

leon boram holding his one-year-old daughter. confronted and he was later arrested by metro transit police. the officer there, um, saying that he tried to board the train boram tried to board the train without paying went through one of those emergency swing gates. he says he was told by the station manager that it was okay. now the police report says that when confronted by the officer, boram first refused orders to leave the station and then threaten the officer there. you can see the station manager seemed concerned about the little girl's welfare during the confrontation actually taking her from the father at one point. fox5 spoke to the young father yesterday after he was charged with unlawful entry, fare evasion, resisting arrest, resisting arrest and diss orally conduct. >> he told me to go upstairs, i said i'm already going upstairs. there's no point of me going upstairs if you're grabbing me. if you're grabbing me how am i going to go up the stairs. look, you can ask the station manager

the gate. you never asked her. you never once asked her. she even came between us. >> reporter: seems to be some confusion because a couple of years ago, there was a report that this congress heights metro station was known as the free station, that people would jump the turn styles and just ride the trains without paying all the time and that the station managers at that time were reaching out for help from their police agency here because of the problem. in this case, the 18-year-old father there says it was the station manager who told him it was okay to ride the train without paying. and police say, guys, that when they first confronted him, young boram wasn't telling them his name didn't tell them his age and that led to the confusion and the heightened tensions there that on social media are getting all kinds of reaction. some saying, hey, be careful of the little kid. others saying that just because you have a kid in your arms doesn't mean you can break the law and do what you want. guys? >> did anyone accident manager if -- i mean did the police ask the

him he could go through? >> reporter: that's not in the police report. so that's just what he is saying. according to the police. this officer saw him going through the emergency the swing gate there and confronted him. but he has been making the allegation the young man did that it was the station manager who said that he can go through. that part is not in the police report. >> bob, i don't know if you know the answer to this question, but since this has happen in the past, who has the final authority? so if the manager did let him go through and the police saw this and the police go and arrest him, is it the manager, the police, i mean -- >> reporter: i get the sense it's a case by case basis because you see in the video there the woman with short hair the station manager is actually trying to move the police officer away. >> right. >> telling him, hey, you know, leave him alone. not -- you never hear her saying i told him he can do that. but, you know, i think in a case like this, once the police

good morning, kevin, live out of la. >> good morning i'm sitting down with goldie hawn and amy schumer today i'm super excited about i saw their new movie thank you very much last night. i was here for guardian of the galaxy two. we had chris pratt on the show. there's a bunch of films coming out the main movie you need to see a fast and furious. i said that last week a lot. amazing film. i know wisdom loved it as much as i did. that to me is worth money to see in an actual theater. the first movie unforgettable starring catherine heigl as well rosario dawson. you've seen this movie before. catherine heigl's character trying to ruin her ex had you been's new relationship engage to rosario dawson's character. the director is actually her first movie but she's been producing films in hollywood for decades. she did a lot of tim burton films. it's an interesting choice to choose this as your first movie. it has some fun moments it's thrill

yourself engaged in the moments wondering what will happen and there's some good twists. but there are times where it doesn't find a consistent tone. you find yourself wondering does the movie want to you laugh with it or laugh at it at times. it's not comedy but there are times where you're kind of like interacting with the screen, and i found it to be little bit inconsistent there. not trying to say this is an oscar worthy type of script that they shall doing that. just didn't know what it wanted to be at times i gave 83 out of five. it's not great, it's not terrible. just kind of passible and kind of forgettable. but it's decent. it's decent if you're looking for a good fun thriller the movies this weekend. >> all right. >> okay. kevin what else do you have? we were talking about how forget all unforgettable is. what else -- a promise it's unforgettable. >> yeah. this is an incredibly hard film to watch. this is i know you guys had oscar isaac and christian bale on the show this week. you learned

donating 100% of the box office proceeds of this film to cha charity. non-profits and this is about the armenian genocide and it's actually inspired by true events that are then told through a fix al love triangle. that christian bale oscar isaac are in. it's a very tough movie. i mean it's a story i didn't know much about. i've heard about it obviously but i didn't know much about this the specifics of it. there are still some countries that deny this even happen which is crazy. but it really is tough film. the film tells you at the end that over estimated 1.5 million people lost their lives. so it's very -- it's an important film in my opinion. i'm happy i watch it because it taught me something i didn't know much about, but i gave 84 out of five. the biggest problem with the film oddly enough is the script sometimes makes it folic you're watching a movie and that's kind of a tough thing to do because you don't want to get pulled out and good i'm watching a

the script and dialogue sometimes but overall i think it's an important film and if you can see it, i rem seeing it because the money goes to a good cause. >> what about the lost city of seem? >> another film true story based on british explorer who travels trying to find lost city and he leaves his family behind. siena miller plays his wife and goes for couple of years at a time and tom hull holland is in the film. charlie hunnam you know him from sons of anarchy and pacific rim. >> it's really well shot film much it's really long. fascinating story. i didn't know much about it either. i know hunnam is brought in the movie it depends on if you want to sit in the theater and taken through that story line i found it interesting but it is kind of long. i gave a four out of five. i do like the film lot. but if you're looking for pure entertainment, like i said fast and furious your best way to go. i'm not saying fast and furious is a better movie thon all these films. it joined it more personalitily. >> okay.

places allison all grown up. >> thank you so much forge coming in. >> my pleasure. how about this one. >> i know, right. >> good work. >> so much talent. >> thank you. >> such a little tiny package. but it's pretty amazing this is the first national tour for fun home which really took broadway by storm in 2015 and making its premier here in washington. >> how big of a deal is this. >> you know it's huge that this show ever made it to broadway. it's fairly non traditional musical all know it's a great musical just sounds a bit more contemporary than what i think people expect of a big old-fashioned musical come dee. it's a story about a family that looks perfect on the outside but on the inside they're a lot of things they don't talk about, which -- >> which would be every family in america. >> exactly. >> basically right. >> allison is a real person. she has this real story that she turn in a graphic hem noir called fun home, and in that she's talking about dealing with the death of her father who died when she was a freshman in college, then also her own understanding of her sexual orientation and her identity and so it's a real

narrative. but there have been lot of people that have come to the show and is he, i didn't have these same issues but i definitely had elements of that in my family isn't related to it in some way, shape or form. >> exactly. >> it really is ground breaking in the fact it won five tony's. it was tom 98ed for many, many more but it wouldn't best musical and that was the first time ever that an all female writing team won that award. also for best score, right, female -- >> best book, we consider, best mew musical. >> best score was written by two women as well. >> yes. >> lead character is a lesbian. that all of that makes this very important. sometimes i wouldn't though, too, sometimes we want to go to the theater and we do want that traditional musical. >> so do oy. >> we get escape from reality but this is not that. it's the tragic comedy that they call it. why do you think it's so important for people to go and really envelope themselves in this story? >> well first of all, you know, it sounds like a pretty heavy show and at times it is intense but it's also tremendously

i'm biased but i think that theater, n theater also challenges and the shows that it like best entertain me but also make me think, right? at this particular moment in our culture to be touring a show about this story across the country is just a fascinating thing. and the great news is that audiences hear in d.c. have& received it really well so far. >> i'm sure. we've had upright derr rapture russ reception everywhere we've gone it's been a lovely surprise. yeah. >> i have a question as i'm staning here talking to both allisons. >> sure. >> which i think it's inte interesting. you know, even as child, you maintain who you are as you grow up so when two different people play the same person, how do you make that connect? >> do you guys talk about it. >> i follow her around. >> do you talk about your character together? >> i feel like at the beginning we sort of worked out different ways of doing things. so like i know eye
