cash from two people he parentally knew. he got a call from mack author boulevard in the palisades section. marina maracco is here with more on what happened next. >>reporter: as you know there's been a lot of confusion as to what exactly happened here this afternoon. we just got the police report here minutes ago so things changing the narrative of what exactly took place and d.c. tonight officially confirming this was a robbery. however, they're not saying if the person who called 911, the complainant and the suspect knew each other. they're saying that the call came here from the exxon gas station and that's where the confusion was whether in fact the gas staying was robbed. the gas station itself was not robbed this afternoon. however, they tried to get a better picture of what exactly took place. they looked for surveillance video and did not find any. so they're relying on witness statements and their investigation to figure out exactly what took place here this afternoon when they got the call just

afternoon. now you'll see this video from earlier today. the man was arrested by police. he was taken in for questioning and i cording to this new police report, the complainant says the man driving a bmw with pennsylvania tags snatched his bag full of cash. that's when the suspect and another man fled in that bmw but only made it several yards before losing losg into a wooden median. that's when the complainant caught up with the suspect, but a second man in the car took off with a bag of cash filling what police are saying was a significant amount of money down on reservoir road. a witness saw the imhoation, says his gut told him to intervene and was able to keep the first suspect until cops arrived. this is how he says it all played out. they were screaming between each other to run and i started asking the fire department to help me to top them to run

them. but the only reason i could stop them was because the big guy wouldn't let go of the small guy because he kept on saying if he didn't get his money back he was go to kill him. so all i had to do was stop the one guy so i physically stopped him from getting away and then we heard the cops finally coming and then i say, look, if you try to run i'm taking you out. and then the cops pulled up and then of course they ran down there and handcuffed him and there was lots of these stacks of money and it was like there's money and then rhode island was black paper and there was like this powder all over it. i have no idea what it was. and then -- you know, the guy that ran away holding the bag, it meant a lot to him because like my wife said he didn't want to get rid of that bag and he wasn't leaving it behind. police say that amount of cash was so significant they had to call in

the cash for d.c. police. tonight the third man who took off with the bag of cash he's being called a person of interest. police have yet to find this man. still no word if all three of them knew each other. >> live tonight in northwest d.c., marina maracco, fox5 local news. >> now to some video that you will only see here on fox5 a. a fairfax county man chases down a thieve caught in the act. this happened in the centerville neighborhood. it's been playinged with thefts lately. lindsay watts is here with more. >>reporter: you saw in the video there that he ran out after the suspect. he chased him down at four in the morning no less. this is a reminder to always lock up your car. in this case three people caught on cam are were roaming a neighborhood in the middle of the night just checking door handles. you can see the three suspects as they round the corner and spread out. one man checks t

white car. then moves onto this unlocked truck. i heard something outside, so i checked my security cameras. i noticed that the door on my truck was open. scott wall says he told his wife to call police and ran outside. i said here i am. i was like you're not getting away. rol caught up with the thieve, grabbed him and was able to get back the only thing taken from his truck, a six-dollar fishing knife. but then the other two people returned. it's a man and a woman who wall says he later learned he's married to the guy who stole from him. i've got the knife in my hand right here as they're trying to move in on me. and when the wife walks up she's got a hammer. help is on the way from this neighbor who heard the altercation. he comes running down and he has a hand gun and he's on the wall with the police. luckily no one got injured. wall and his neighbor were able to keep their

the sus pucts until police got to them. when you're in a situation like that you probably have to gauge everything as it unfolds. he says he lenders police that the suspects are known drug suspect who live in the area. they were all addicts and they were looking for stuff to steal to feed their habit. for months and months there's been neighbors who have been talking cars getting broken into. he hopes those conversations have come to an end. nobody likes to know that people in their neighborhood are having theft issues or their cars gone into and things stolen out of them. my hope is that now these guys are caught and hopefully those were the only people that were doing this and don't have a problem like that again. and just a side note, wall owns an audio video lighting company and that's why he has all that fancy equipment in his home. we're work now to

fairfax county police and the suspects involved and whether they believe they're linked to any other crimes. >> frightening moments for people inside a bethesda store this afternoon. police tell us a man walked into the right said on west barred avenue and stole drugs from the pharmacy. no one was hurt. police are asking anyone with information about this case to give them a call. >> meantime fox5 is in prince george's county where crews had to battle an apartment fire in fort washington. the flames quickly spread, but everyone was able to make it out safely. some escaped from the balconies of their third story apartments here's fox5's alexandra limon. cellphone video captured by neighbors shows the flames shooting out of the apartment windows and ripping out of the building, thick smoke filling the air. incredibly the family who lives in the apartment where the fire started got out safe limit neighbors witnessed the or deal as a woman and her kids

outside my balcony and i ' her and the whole family out there. the next thing i see guys running up. she's taking her kids over the balcony, the third floor. people was catching her kids. other neighbors described similar thieves. ma keen was one of the people who captured video on his cellphone and says another woman was also trying to climb off her balcony on the back side of that building. she was crying. she was asking for help. the fire, the woman who lives in the apartment where the fire started tells fox5 she plugged in a lamp and when she came back it was on fire. her home was reduced to rubble and ash and she was too shocked to speak on camera. it's a bad thing that we had a fire in an apartment, but one good thing is that it was up on that top floor. if it had been on one of the lower floors there would have been a lot more full to burn. this particular fire it burned up through the

through the roof space and actually rented itself. eleven apartments were affected by flames, smoke and water damage and about 30 people will be displaced at least temporarily. despite all of this damage and the fact that people were climbing off their own balconies, prince george's county fire says there were no reported injuries. >> reporting in alexandria, fox5 local news. >> staying in prince george's county, a pedestrian was critically hurt today after he was hit by a car in oxon hill. this happened around nine this morning on oxon hill road. the man was taken to a hospital for treatment. we are told the driver take youd at the scene. police are now investigating what happened and it's unclear if any charges will be filed. president trump approaching an important milestone in his presidency. how he's trying to score a legislative win before his 100 days are up. a 420 my be in our rearview mirror, but

>> any d.c. government employees on workers comp should be receiving their pay by tomorrow or tuesday if they haven't already received it. several hundred of the employees who use direct deposit didn't get their paychecks friday and that's because the office of risk management which handles the payments switched systems while it notified workers rhode island was no mention about a change when it came to pay schedule. several individuals contacted fox5 concerned about possibly bouncing checks or not having enough money on hand to make it through the next few days. in a statement the d.c. office of risk management told us it apologizes for this convenience and will work with those negatively impacted by this change. just six days from now, next saturday it marks an important milestone in the trump presidency. that ill with be the day that president trump has been in office for 100 days. a

there's a lot of big issues looming, including a possible congress shutdown, healthcare reform and the building of the wall that the president vowed he would build. reporter roar there's only two paths for president trump to score a big legislative win before the first 100 days are up he can get funding for the wall or get house representatives to vote on a revised obama care. funding for a border wall is a deal breaker and house speaker paul ryan says that he doesn't have the votes or the time to pass healthcare reform by friday. in a conference call with house republicans yesterday speaker ryan said his top priority this week is avoiding a government shutdown. negotiations now insist if the spending deal would put a $100,000. would he sign a bill yet he said i don't know. his budget director essentially said the same thing on fox news sunday. i don't

to a shutdown. shutdown is not a desired, it's not a l too. it's not something that we want to have. we want our priorities funded and one of the biggest priorities during the campaign was border security and keeping americans safe and part of that was a border wall. marco rubio are worried that this spending bill show down could turn into an actual government shutdown. the last thing we can afford is to send a message to the world that the united states government by the way is only partially functioning. that would just have catastrophic impact in my view or certainly very destabilizing impact on global affairs. we should keep that in mind. in addition to this spending bill and healthcare reform president trump is also poised to interview his tax reform plan on wednesday. he'll then end the week in harrisburg, pennsylvania to hold a big rally on saturday to officially mark his 100th day in omples at the white house, kristin fisher, fox ns.
