>> coupleen down to end of first 100 days. what's on owe the president's plate a day ahead and what's about the administration on the milestone. >> absolutely as you can see from rundown over there opt side of the screen these will top ersers for us tonight at 6:30. this could be the most critical week so far for trump administration. president hits that 100 day mark saturday as lawmakers rush to stave off a possible government shutdown and that's beginning. they're expected to take a stab at tax return and of course border wall. here's what white house press secretary sean spicer said about grading first 100 days sdmri think when you look at totality
6:31 pm
on job creation and immigration and trade that it is unbelievable what he has been able to do and when you think about what he started, moving forward on taxry form and immigration and trade it's been a hugely successful first 100 days. >> what i enjoy about this time period. if you talk to republicans they will give him a grade and if you talk to democrats they give him d grade. it depends who you talk to how you grade that success. >> depends, too, who values that 100 day mile stochbility i believe there's people in the white house that said president deposit want to set expectations high or set them at all. he thinks it's arbitrary milestone and be honest it kind of is. >> can't judge administration by first 100 days. >> ■a new pollshows president&r commandner chief at this point in presidency. >> according to "washington post" "abc news" poll he has 53% disapproval rateen and
6:32 pm
majority say he's not accomplished much during time as president but still and this is ying to yang here 9 6% of people who voted say no regrets and remain largely satisfied with his perfo performance. >> not surprised by that either. that goes back to base is still behind him supporting him. >> when you look at the same poll the number of people that say voting for hillary clinton again it's 85%. less than what president trump has. it's all irrelevant he's the president. what difference does it make. >> unless you ask him. it makes a difference. >> i'm quoting hillary clinton too vital point during one of those congressional hearings, moving on to france now and historic presidential election there 11 candidates whittled down to two and mills yonz turned out to vote. nail biter too close to call until results came in fascinating because they decided not to go with any major parties in france. now far right nationalist mature each la pen and central
6:33 pm
two weeks. >> shortly though after results came in protesters clashed with police in paris and they gathered at the bastile to vent anger with success in advancing to that runoff. cars on fire ran from police and officers arrested three people. we're told two people were hurt. french presidential election has parallels to our recent u.s. election. >> israel or te go political writer and reporter joins us now. >> how are you. >> doing well. >> i say it two ways opportunity lives and opportunity lives. >> opportunity lives. >> first time i got it right. >> be talk about the fast that voters turn out for major party and voted for two one is outsider and one never served elected office in the life. are we seeing u.s. parallels to election and french election here. >> there's this message of nationalism and pop ulism resonate. i realize la pen came up
6:34 pm
most votes. but i think look the electorate is still dissatisfied and clearly la pen tapped into something. and i think for us it's voters want results, they want something different. and so i think that that is still obviously resonating across the pond but here in the u.s. >> what do you think this says about us globally that we're seeing this -- these parallels here la pen holds similar views on immigration like donald trump and we know she recently temporarily stepped down ahead of national front party which many see as far as right and some elements of it racist and yet still she came in second here in this election. what do you think that says. >> absolutely. that's why xtd there's a lot of fear and anxiety among workers when you look at france for example 25% and when you look at how economy is not growing this anti-immigrant rhetoric
6:35 pm
nerve with people and hitting a nerve in france and still obviously hits a nerve in the u.s. and there are parallels from what we saw this weekend. >> too when you mentioned that terror is a major con concern. and when the police officer was shot in paris many said this is something that you don't want to say this is something that will benefit la pen it's certainly something that strikes that nerve. >> absolutely. i think this is for mccon i think he has to realize that he has to have stronger message on terrorism. he's been asked in the past about this and basically said we should get used to this new normal. and that is not a compelling message if you're public el elected official. soy think look if polls are right he'll become france's next president and it still didn't mean he have to come one better answer or terr terrorism. >> what do we learn about poll as around here. >> they can be off and wrong and i think that's why mccon should not start counting
6:36 pm
he has to close this out if he want to win. >> it's not just france and u.s. you can look at break said and london or uk when we talk about theresa may. do you think this will continue tore spark because of the trend we're seeing all of a sudden seeing things come back the other way. >> no, i think look i think fear and anxiety i mentioned earlier mopping workers is there. and you know we know what's happening with automation for example. i don't think these things will just go away overnight. the same thing with what we're seeing with islamic state. and i mean these are thorny issues and they're going to be people politicians will exploit that and to get to power. >> good to see you tonight. thanks for joining us. >> thank you. >> vacation is over for former president barack obama. he returned to the public spotlight at special event with students eight university of chicago today. in fact he talked to them about civic engagement, community organizing
6:37 pm
withdrawaling from the challenges facing society and talked politics of course specifically how hard it is now to find common ground. >> what i said in 2004 this were no red states or blue states they're united states of america that was aspi aspirational. if when you talk to individuals one-on-one people there's a lot more people have in common than divides them and obviously that's not true when coming to politics. >> the parties moved further apart and he urged students there to get involved in the discussion. >> yes. and it was -- it was interesting dynamic once again not in campaign setting. and it's been a while in a more administrative purpose which clearly was not today. and comment teary writer with washington examiner joins us
6:38 pm
of the former president. >> thanks for having me. >> any big surprise us heard from the president. >> one of the biggest surprises is something we did not hear throughout the entire hour and a half of remarks. president obama didn't even say the words donald trump once. instead he focused on what he was able to achieve in office and the challenges going forward. and really this is telling. president obama, former president obama, was on vacation for three months. and he had a chance to go into that good night. instead he's going back to work. i don't think this will be the last we'll see from president obama and instead he'll be a very active former president. >> even though he did not mention donald trump he talked politics. let's talk about what he had to say. but let's also talk about the democratic party right now. we know bernie sanders and head of dmc tom perez are on unification tour across the united states and don't seem unified all the time. do you see
6:39 pm
jumping back in here and is he still head of the party? >> well i'm -- it's not clear if president obama is the head of party right now he's definitely tag a step back he's not as engaged as he was. that's a capability he still has. if you look at democratic bench now it's thin the only progressive champion they have it bernie sanders and vermont senator. >> who says he's not a democrat he's app independent. >> which makes you wonder what is happen in the democratic party now there's all sorts of inviting there and perhaps going to take president obama coming back in in elder statesman moment and bringing party back together rights now he still seems stand offish and ready to work more specifically with college age kids and community organize khing is really in his wheel house. >> it's interesting to see parties and how they changed and stayed same because republicans for a long while
6:40 pm
party wing and democrats had to their credit they whipped all the oates votes and got them in one place now you see it smripter off a bit this is one untold story of new cycle right now and everybody likes to focus on ipts viting reps on trump's first 100 days which have not gotten over the ground and there's significant drama behind the sceepz. you see tom perez and bernie sanders going back and forge this is unity tour is that the anything but unified. >> let me ask you going back to president and his message today who do you think he was trying to get from all that was he up spireing young people to get active and go on politics. >> i think inspiring messages we saw from president obama he was giving message that was not unlike something we heard from marco rubio or other senators which is that we're going to live in democratic societ
6:41 pm
people and not call them names and i know president obama has not taken the plunge back into politics fully but that's a message that seems like both sides of aisle should be able to get sglind let's hope. >> we can only hope for that. >> philip with the washington examiner, thanks for coming in. we appreciate it. >> this weekend hi a chance yesterday to go out and enjoy the sun early in the morning on a bike for a while. today was not one of those days not at all, cold, rainy. >> cancel the bake ride for tomorrow, too. >> done. >> we have long to deal with showers and rainstorm coming on through. it's really a slow-moving system and still down by georgia and it's got to work its way off the coast and it's going toty a little while. we'll keep showers in the forecast tonight declare get light to closer to 11:00 or so and unfortunately intensity may pick up in time for morning rush hour. period of moderate
6:42 pm
around tomorrow morning and chilly side and we only topped out at 57 today we may number upper 50s to near 60 tomorrow and now there's some signs of light at the end of the tunnel and it looks like this whole process will be over sometime on wednesday and there could be early morning showers or clouds around on wednesday but we should break for sunshine by the afternoon. and then we completely change seasons as we get into the late week and weekend. a big warm-up is expected as a matter of fact we could see first 90 degree readings of 2017 in the district. so, get ready to change seasons and but don't lose track ever that umbrella you need it throughout the day tomorrow. that's a first look at forecast, jim, shawn, we'll accepted it back to you. >> almost lost my umbrella. o. i have to get. >> it will be like this the next couple days. >> could we be on verge of another government shutdown. live on the hill when news at 630 comes
6:45 pm
back to 530 at 6. love you tope. 100 day mark for president trump carries symbolic weight. government shutdown very real and could happen indof week. >> "fox5" tom fitzgerald is live tonight with more on the story. fits, do you think they'll work out a deal own this one. >> that says it all. >> you feeling deja vue right now. >> maybe. >> how many times have we heard this. >> i'll tell you how many times. this is the second congress now jim and shawn where we are come twelve times within five days of government shutdown. that is remarkable number when you consider the fact that you know the congress is supposed to come up here and do one thing run the government and systemically now we have a problem where no matter who is in charge they cannot seem to do that on regular basis. the situation here now is
6:46 pm
we face. this fight is not over obamacare like some of the recent arguments up here. this is about mexican border wall. here's a situation, folks, we hav until april 28, four days from now, to get a continuing resolution which basically pays the bills for government. the white house now is asking for three billion dollars added to that continuing resolution to help start construction on the mexican border wall. now the democrats say this they're not in favor of the wall. but they are asking questions like what happened to that promise that mexico was paying for the wall. and if this gets hung up because some of the republicans don't want to foot that money well that will put in jeopardy the jobs of hundreds of thousands of federal workers in our area. and we spoke to maryland senator chris van holland about what kind of impact we would face. >> it's a very sgrukttive budget and not just for the region but the whole country. what we're t
6:47 pm
get through the remainder of this fiscal year between now and indof september. and what trump has done is inject this new demand into the process saying give me money for a wait of wall that won't work or else i'll shut down the government and that's reckless and irresponsible. >> now you talk to the republicans and you talk to the conservatives and they'll tell you they believe they will be able to get a deal done in the next four days. however you were looking at a situation right now where they are literally no time to do this. they just got back from the easter recess. they not only have to present these bills they have to debate them and then have to pass them. the one way to get out of this is passe shorter continuing resolution that would give them a couple more days to work on this and we went over the heritage foundation today and talked to rachel one of the analysts following us closely she used to work
6:48 pm
on republican side of the hill and she says she believes we will avoid the shut done and that does not put us out of the woods for the re mainder this year. >> i don't think he with need to be scared this time around and we've obviously been in the situation before all signs point to short funneleding situation to negotiate or cut a deal by friday. nobody wants a shut don't and the president has been clear he doesn't want that. >> and here's why we're not out of the woods. this continuing resolution if they do actually pass it before end of this week that would only run till end of september. september 30 to be exact. so jim and shawn come binning of fall we could be right back in this same position again counting down the hours possibly staring down another fall government shutdown. that would be the 13th within last two congresses. >> i feel you on deja vue it's over and over and over. >> and this is
6:49 pm
why regardless of who is running congress they are low approval ratings it gets to this. >> it'sing a a student who knows there's a term paper due and they know the teacher wants it on a specific day and they don't work on the darn paper until the night it's due. >> congratulation force describing me that was me. >> a lot of sglem thank you fit does. >> and my sglaevl look where we are. >> a lot of people in washington. >> okay. >> okay. >> guess whose coming to dinner. >> president boycotting correspondence dinner and inviting media friend instead. we'll talk about that when 5 5@630 comes pats pass
6:51 pm
6:52 pm
administration and his staff is also boycotting issue of solidarity with the president. >> but tonight welcoming members of conservative media for small reception and one attending the daily collar and "fox5" contributor joins us tonight. >> hi. >> hello. >> who is coming to dinner at the white house sglont they just wrapped up that reception a few minutes ago. there were reporters from like you said american news daily kol floor and washington beacon were there. as well as some column night and apparently talk radio hosts as well it was a reception really to recognize conservative media and reporting i spoke with sean spicer yesterday ahead of it he said these people were ignored for the past eight years this is just sort of a small reception to them to look and recognize the work they do and covering issues they said get ignored in rest of media. >>
6:53 pm
us to see a president to do something like this to single out certain group and have this kind of dinner? >> it's not atypical for president to invite certain columnists and reporters left leaning or right leaning over to the whoyt house i'm ready to see if they'll do this with liberal columnists and the fact he's inviting conservative media is not terribly surprising. former president barack obama is known for inviting conservative columnists to hash over dwrodz look at his point of view i'm ready to see if donald trump will do the same thing. >> look ago head to the correspondence dinner i have a image we will see on sunday morning talk shows of president trump in opinions in front ever rally with thousands of people with signs and make america great again and you will have on split screen exactly image he wants to pour fray elite media it tuxes at the white house correspondent dinner in that way there's few ways the media
6:54 pm
>> in defense of mode yoo i don't think they're trying to win an argument. it's a perfect situation for media and hosting a rally saturday night it he's pretty much forcing the split screen which it's exactly as you described the rest of media will be nice dresses and tuxedos toasting one another and donald trump will be with the rally. it's pure golden bait for the cable networks that will be showing live like split screens between dinner and what done sdan says and he'll reference the dinner during that rally as well. >> what do you think is take away from all this. from the rest of media who was not invited to this dinner tonight, from general public watch physical we see the split screens saturday. >> i think this is something i wrote a piece in politico magazine this past weeke
6:55 pm
media and donald trump and white house talk about opposition party calling media opposition party behind the scenes the relationships are you can almost say typical relationships they still talk to reporters. if they really wanted to you know declare war on the media, they would kick us out ever the briefing room and live stream everything and yet people are still in the white did he call "washington post" and daily "new york times". >> we should pay attention to what they're not saying. >> thank you hadas. >> thank you. >> president trump presents first purple heart of presidency. we'll have that when 5@630

7:00 pm
harvey: rough weekend for president trump, taking shots from bill clinton and space. >> they were interviewing the people that are in the space station. they explained to him how they're turning their urine into drinking water. >> and it's really not as bad as it sounds. >> i don't want that to be the response. it's not that bad. i need something a little stronger, like it's great. >> we got kendrick lamar. >> we did? >> new album out. "damn." lebron james got a copy early. we asked did president obama get the same kind of advanced copy love? >> lebron is the better person to give the album too. you don't want to give it to too many people. >> two people? >> she's like it's a slippery slope. you got to give it to everyone. >> morgan freeman has to have it. >> kylie jenner was chased off a red carpet by animal rights protesters.
