very slow mover. 24 hours ago it was in south carolina. now it's in north carolina. once we get just to our east we'll improve things around here that's still about 24 hours way. so i mean let's take the rain while we can get it very dry around here since last october, and just one more dave it we'll get a nice improvement around here by tomorrow. all right. i'm giving you two day forecast. coming up i'll give you the seven day. showers couldn't, cool today, 62. take a jacket along with your umbrella about 70 by tomorrow late afternoon. lay day sun tomorrow. summertime temperatures those details coming up. >> 9:30 for that. our big story at 9:00 fire crews in prince george's county on hot spot patrol after that massive fire yesterday at college park aartment building. the flames first broke out at that building when which was under construction about 24 hours ago. it was set to open in a matter of months but now the building is facing tens of millions of dollars worth of damage. melanie alnwick is live in college park with the latest in this story. mel? >> reporter: good morning, guys. and it's been almost 24 hou

continuous water flow here as well. take look. you can see the latter trucks back at it again. it is hard to believe that much water has been put on this fire for this long and yet there are still little flare ups toward the back of the building. there are still hot spots they are concerned about on top of that the structural damage because of the fire and then the weight and the damage from all of that water also causing concerns possibly about a collapse of the building. it is not safe for firefighters or fire investigators to enter so they have not even gun to enter the investigation phase of this. more than 200 firefighters responded yesterday to help battle the fire. a total loss about $39 million. it was just incredible. 60 minutes after the alarm sounded, we were here on the scene. just smoke everywhere. fire traveling from one side of the roof to the other. full city

spans and all of that roof then covered with fire and smoke. five alarms eventually sounded also an alarm sounded to pull all the firefighters out of the building. crews real do nothing more than to attack it from the outside this was the building called fuse 47 a project of 250 apartments. parking garage retail stores. it was scheduled for occupancy in july of 2017. i talked to some construction workers yesterday here on the scene, who had to get themselves out of the building because there were no sprinklers. there were no smoke alarms to tell them that they had to get out of the building. they saw the fire, and they had to pass the word among themselves. they said there were about 60 to 75 people inside. so the fact that it was under construction, one of the things that led to this fire growing so quickly. i'm told that there were lot of raw materials in there as well as pockets of area that is were unfinished where the fire could travel and hide. i also want to show you video here. another

if you look at the overhead pictures that we took of the building you'll see it is shaped in square with a courtyard like a doughnut hole right in the middle. fire officials told us they are not able to access the back side of the building. they could only attack it from the front. it's also built in a hillside so they're literally on the back of the building is no room for ladder trucks to get up there to attack the fire. i asked fire officials if this is a problem as far as the design and the permitting of the building would it be an even bigger concern once people occupy this building. from what i'm told, they believe that once people -- once it is certified for occupancy, then there are on the factors they have to put in maybe additional sprinklers, maybe additional access points for firefighters to get into something will be part of the investigation once they get into that phase. live here in college park, i'm melanie alnwick, fox5 local n news. >> melanie thank you very much. >> developin

but they're getting a across safely and this is all about saving the lives of university of medical maryland students. this is busy route 1. a lot of them live on that side of route 1, and they go to classes here. the city of college park has installed a number about four of these speed cameras here along route 1, and apparently in the past three years, since these cameras have been operating 24/7, there have been no fatalities. no pedestrian fatalities here along route 1. before they turned these cameras on 24/7, there had been three fatalities in very short period of time. so the good news is, that these machines are apparently saving lives. but aaa says the problem is, the company that runs these machines is making too much money. i can show you here a graphic. in the past three years, the city of college park has earned about $4.9 million from their machines. the company the vendor has made about $3.4 million according to aaa. it calls that

and that's because the operator of these machines gets a cut from each $40 ticket that is issue. that cut has been $15 and 60 cents. highway robbery according to triple a. but, the maryland general assembly has done away with this. a few years ago it changed a law that takes effect june 1st that the companies and the municipalities that install these speed cameras can no longer have a per ticket fee. it now has to be a flat fee and i have spoken to john o'connor he is with op tow traffic the companies that maintains these machines. he says speed cameras slow drivers and safe lives, but that they welcome the change. and that they have already in most instances redone their agreements with the munic municipalities to reflect that change. that there's now a flat fee, no longer a per ticket fee, and he says that they have machines in sea pleasant on central avenue they believe are also slowing

drivers and saving lives. so that's what this is all about, guys. yes, you can see them here just an endless stream of people coming across busy route 1, and the thought the speed cameras are slowing down but where the money is going has been concern for groups, safety traffic groups like aaa but that's about to change, guys. >> bob i would think the company would welcome the flat fee over time there will be less ticks clearly it's doing its job. less tickets so they're getting less money perfect just negotiate a big straight fee out front. >> reporter: yeah, and again, this mr. o'connor with op tow traffics based here in prince george's county says, yeah, they welcome the change. no problem at all. i will tell you, i mean you can tell when these things go up. we've been out here all morning. and i haven't seen it flash once. so i think people who take this route one on a daily basis, the metro buses, whoever, the commercial trucks, they know it and they've been abiding by the speed limb. >> all right. that's good thing. >> or they just speed before or

11:00 o'clock at night, and somebody sped by me like 100 miles an hour then 50 cars behind hsing c him. so i guess it happens around here, too. clouds and showers. th couldn't, and it will be tomorrow before we really call it quits on our rainy system. need the rain. 58 still cool out there. winds out of the northeast at 20 take your jacket and umbrella there's your rain shower activity you can see it spreading back into the area for the most part it's been hanging out washington and south and east this morning, but all of us will get back in on at least on again off again showers this afternoon as our area of low pressure which is parked right about here down near raleigh will very very gradually get pushed off to the north and to the east here but it is a slow mover no doubt about it really been responsible for much of the rain we've had around here since saturday. as it's just been kind of cut off here from the jet stream that continues. cool temperatures continue to drain into the area with winds off the ocean and our daytime highs again won't be much higher than about 60 maybe we'll get in the low 60s think afternoon quite cool out there.
