robbery. this is antonio camaro accused of raping a woman in silver spring. the victim -- the story broke yesterday around this time. the victim told officers she was walking on the sidewalk. the victim says the suspect sexually assaulted her. he's being held without bond. >> family and fellow officers watched as the body of corporal stephen ballard was moved to a funeral home today. the delaware state trooper who was from prince george's county was ves investigating a suspicious vehicle. one person was arrested at the scene. the other took off and barricaded himself inside his home. another stressful morning for those who use the red line. many had to call in to work to say they would be late after an issue at metro center.

matt auc ackland is live at gallery place with more. matt, how is the red line now. >> reporter: things seem to be running smoothly for now o this morning as you were saying it was a headache. i was one of those people heading to an appointment when they shut it down. a lot of people then came out onto the streets. we're out in front of metro center. they came out in a big group. there were ambulances fire trucks around and they got on their phones, they were calling for uber, they were calling for taxis. there were shuttle buses here. a lot of people saying it happened again. it happened again. smoke in the tunnel shutting down a major line during rush hour. prompting many complaints on social media. metro's gm had a simple response to those complaints. >> it would have been very easy to though, to say well we saw some smoke and it's not that bad let's run the trains. i'm not doing that. i'm just not doing that. >> reporter: meanwhile metro's workers union staged a major pte

after it was canceled. tom fitzgerald with more on this. >> reporter: university of california officials canceled this appearance by ann coulter after concerns over security regarding protesters who are opposed to ann coulter's conservative viewpoints and i dideology. earlier this year there were riots on the campus uc berkeley. today colder confirmed her own cancellation but before calling out what she says is a disturbing trend these days of the campuses of universities and colleges places that are supposed to be laboratory for ideas which she says now are waving the white flag in opposition to students who don't like some of the things they might hear. >> it shows how radical the universities are generally. i mean, what you're talking about i agree with, yes they want toes

mackenzie elliott. tonight mackenzie's family saying that they're grateful their suspected killer has been caught. >> thank god that finally, finally something. this is truly tremendous to know that something finally happened. and now we can get some closure. >> this will be a moment, a transition point where the police and prosecutors get back on the offensive and we'll see a reduction in violent crime. >> if convicted plumber faces a maximum sentence of death or life in prison. intense moments for dozen of workers. a bomb threat came in afternoon. the office in the 900 block of south washington street also houses an abortion clinic. authorities tell fox5 a witness found two sheets of paper near the building's entrance with the word bomb written on it. earlier this morning police were called to the same building after reports of smoke and an explosion. the building was evacuated and

exploded fireworks inside of an elevator. no one was hurt. >> we have an update on that massive fire that broke out in an apartment building under construction in college park. fire crews were back on the scene this afternoon watching for any potential flareups. meantime the cause of the fire is still a mystery but investigators say it appears to be accidental. the five alarm fire broke out monday morning along berwyn house road. prince george's county fire officials are asking anyone who witnessed that fire to please send them pictures and videos. >> ♪ >> all right. what a difference a day makes. really? i mean, just imagine what we were dealing with the last couple of days with the gray skies and the rain and just kind of a general misery out there. >> it was miserable. now it is sunny and bright and we bring in gary mcgrady bringing in the sunshine. >> just on cue, right. >> yeah. >> yeah. >> here comes the sun. >> yeah, and here comes the heat, too, because it's going to really get warm. at least for part of the weekend. you may have heard by now the weekend is a little bit tricky. i think

nailed. sunday is going to be a little bit harder to figure out where the front is going to end up. that makes an impact. i'm not going to talk about that now but if you'll stay with us, right, big tease here, about 5:45 or so i'll have more on the weekend forecast. 79 right now here in town, 80's back out to the west. look at frederick, 84 degrees there. now more clouds an few showers getting closer to i-81, so winchester is 77, martinsburg is 79 so a little bit cooler and then over here for annapolis temperatures beautiful. really, really nice there, too, coming in at 78 degrees or so. now, i mentioned rain. you can see some showers back out to the west of us. again, this is all west coming through west virginia right now. it is moving in our direction. look, there's going to be showers in the forecast later on this evening and during the overnight but i do believe it's going to be few and far between with these showers coming across. so, a lot of us will stay dry and those of us that do get a little bit of rain as this comes on across, it does not look like it's

lot, but with that in mind later this evening and into the overnight, there is going to at least be a chance for some showers. for the most part this evening looks really nice. i'm getting a bit ahead of myself with the weekend. 78 or so at 7 o'clock. obviously that's off from where we are now. 76 at 9 o'clock, so very, very mild there. and 11 o'clock, we're 73 or so. notice by 9 o'clock i put a few showers in, 11 o'clock, too, and then that will carry into the overnight t lows tonight middle y 60's. i think 67 in town, how about that. close to 70 for quantico, 63, lower 60's or so for frederick and then culpeper 65. tomorrow some early morning clouds, maybe a little bit of fog, too, but we'll end up with a high of 84 degrees or so. and i want to show you real quickly at 10 o'clock, then again, we're just showing kind of spotty showers and that will be continue through the evening and into the overnight as well. so, if you get a little bit of rain, it should not be too many terribly

full forecast and more details on the weekend. the weekend trickery, i'll say that, because honestly, guys, i'm not exactly sure what we're going to end up with for highs on sunday. just being honest. >> all right. way to be honest. i applaud you for that. >> but i'm going to give it a shot. i want everybody to know i'm going to give it a shot. >> all right. don't totally bail on us. >> i won't. >> thanks gary. we're following a developing story out of the loudoun county tonight. students at two schools reportedly took xanax last week and tonight the sheriff's officers is holding a meeting at one of those schools and parents are invited. >> parents are fired up about this, alex. >> reporter: hey, guys, well, the loudoun county sheriff's office tells me this was a previously scheduled quarterly meeting but in light of what happened at two different loudoun county schools, they have decided to move the meeting here to river bend middle school. it's tonight at 7:00 and it is opened to parents. the reason they moved it is because the sheriff's

says they do anticipate a lot of people to show up with questions or concerns and they want to talk to people about what happened reportedly on friday. seven students here at river bend middle school shared a drink in contained xanax and after panicking, they went to the school nurse. all of the students are okay and they were sent home with parents but the concerning thing is that on that very same day, two students at potomac falls high school, which is just down the street from here, were also found to be in possession of that same drug. so, now, there's an ongoing investigation into whether the two incidents are linked. now, at tonight's meeting the sheriff's office says they won't have any updates to that investigation however they'll provide educational material and information on drug use and the drug prevention for parents to talk to their teenagers. we're live in sterling tonight, alexandria limon, fox5 local news. >> maryland is taking action to deal with the

problem of opioid abuse. >> frederick county officials unveiled a billboard today on route 85 south of downtown frederick right near the county detention center and work release program office. the sign calls attention to the number of people overdosing in the community and dying of overdoses. so far this year 96 overdoses, 15 deadly ones in frederick county, seven deaths in just the past three and a half weeks. >> we're trying to raise awareness and educate the public about how significant the heroin and opioid epidemic is in our community. you notice the sign and look at the numbers, we have on average one person overdosing every day and one fatality about every 10 days. and that's a growing statistic. >> as always no matter where you live, there are government and community services for people dealing with heroin or opioid addictions. coming up a lot of anger at one elementary school over the principal's classroom orders. >> if that's how she feels in a

she's not fit to represent a predominantly african-american school. >> the e-mail she sent to staff requesting that all white students be put in the same classrooms. >> then, a settlement in that case between united airlines and the passenger who was violently removed from a plane earlier this month. >> and if that job interview question you love to dodge. what is your current or most recent salary? i always think none of your business. a local figure could limit your starting pay and a high number might make you seem expensive. well, now something is being done to prevent applicants from being asked this ques question. >> ♪

man you're about to meet won a gold medal at the world jujitsu festival standing on one. >> he lost part of his leg in a motorcycle accident in 1995. fox5 photographer dan with more on his story. >> 30 days after the accident i had a gun to my head and just before i pulled the trigger i decided i wasn't going to quit. if i was going to die i was going to die fighting. >> ♪ >> i found my path through jujitsu. coming out when i lost my leg, this is 21 years ago, they didn't have paralympics then, they didn't have amputees on commercials or television. i just kind of had to find my own way. i went back into martial arts as a way of recovery. when i first started training, i wasn't allowed to train in most gyms they turned me away because there had never been a amputee before that that neighborhood martial arts. at one point i want to start competing. we had to drive four and a half hours

sneak in a tournament. i would wear long pants my leg was padded up and after i won my first fight i knocked the guy out in the second round i went to the center of the ring raised my leg above my head and the entire stadium went quiet. years go by they offered me to fight. nobody knew if an amputee could do at this time. it's a combat sport so you can't think about it. it's not lynn nar motion. you have to be acting in a flow and to me that shows true ability. i retired from mixed martial arts after holding 170-pound title. about half year ago i heard about this world jujitsu tournament. >> the rules of the tournament was that he couldn't use his prosthetic. he had to learn to not have that him to post on anymore. he had to fight able bie

prosthetic. the first match he was a little rough, the second a little better and then he ended up submitting all of his opponents and winning. >> there are advantages you can't ankle me. i don't have an ankle on that side. i'm not able to sweep from that side. people are truly stunned. that can't believe that they just got beat by a one legged dude. >> jujitsu is a lifetime. it teaches you thousand solve problems under duress sole the things that we learn here are applicable to any area of our lives. >> without this, i don't know where i would have ended up. with jujitsu i'm a world champion. >> man without limits. >> dan does great work. >> coming up at 5:30 there's a new investigation into michael flynn's ties to russia. >> here's ronica. >> reporter: hey, jim and sarah, well, it's not just a new investigation there's a debate about whether or not the white house is making it very

>> this is fox5 local news at 5:00. >> top stories at 5:30. police looking for a missing teen from takoma park. authorities say 14-year-old kiari moore was last seen by her father. she's 58, 155 pounds. park police are handling the case. >> strong fumes from that a construction site forced students to evacuate dunbar high school today. around 9:30 this morning officials say there was a

leak on first street releasing fumes into the school building. one school employee was taken to the hospital for observation. no students were hurt. everyone was allowed to go back in the building around 11 o'clock this morning. >> ♪ >> new tonight there is a new investigation into michael flynn's work with the russian government. >> just 23 days into the trump administration flynn was fired from his position as the national security adviser. the reason was for misleading the stripes about vice president withconversatione russian ambassador. ronica cleary has more on the investigation and what the white house is saying about it. >> reporter: two very different stories about some documents that many people leave are important to uncovering facts in this story. well, congressman elijah cummings announced this investigation today into work that michael flynn did for the russian government noun this alleged maybe effort or nondisclosure of payments that he received from the russian government on

clearance documentation for the white house. now, at today's press conference, elijah cummings released these documents he says he got from the department of defense that are now unclassified. he says that attempting to get these documents from the white house he accused them of being extremely difficult making it impossible to get this documentation. take a listen. >> earlier this week the white house refused, absolutely refused to produce even a single document, not a single document in response to the bipartisan document requests that i sent with our republican chairman. not one syllable. i watched sean spicer make all kinds of excuses about how hard it would be to comply with our request. come on, man. >> reporter: well, the congressman went ton say that he believes that the white house is actually covering up for michael flynn but if the wh

disagrees. in today's briefing the press secretary addressed the congressman's comments from earlier today and gave a very different account of what happened. >> i was frankly taken back by his comments today because they're frankly not true. with all due respect, he got the documents that he requested. our job -- they sent a form letter to multiple agencies asking for a copy of this. what we did was properly refer him to the issuing agency and department and said this is where you got it. and he got it. >> reporter: so, there are really two questions here that that people are looking at. one, whether the white house is making it difficult to obtain documents needed for these investigations and then a separate question here, did michael flynn purposely mislead and not provide information necessary on the those security clearance forms. so, two issues at hand. way in. what do you think? you know i love to hear from you. you can find me on facebook and twitter. reporting live at the white house,

local news. >> there's new concern tonight about the recent removals of caregivers from the va's caregiver program. more than 35,000 family caregivers have participated in the program since 2011. the va says more than 13,000 had been removed over the last six years. however there's a group called veteran warriors that's disputing that. their survey shows more than 12,000 vets lost their caregivers in less than two years. >> as far as i'm concerned it's unacceptable. we should always err on the side of the veteran. they are a true american heros. >> the va is now suspending program removals while they investigate the complaints. meantime the house va committee is planning a round table with vets to talk about their concerns. >> new york city mayor bill deblasio brass yo' stepping up to help illegal immigrants fight deportation. the mayor says he is setting aside more than $16 million in his 2018 budget to pay for undocumented immigrants

the money would also help cover legal counsel for people in detention unaccompanied minors and people seeking asylum. the move by mayor deblasio follows andrew cuomo's promise to earmark $10 million in taxpayer funds for the same purpose. >> it is a job interview question a lot of people would rather not answer, what's your current or most recent salary. okay. so, several cities and states are banning the question now. all part of an effort to make sure women receive equal pay. p. similar measure. legislation on banning the salary question has already passed in cities like philadelphia and new york city as well as the commonwealth of massachusetts. the census bureau says women earn about 80 cents for every dollar earned by men. >> i think it makes sense, you know. don't want someone low ball you. >> it's one of those questions you don't want to answer. >> you shouldn't have to. what makes a good president trump impression? >> well, there are some impersonators out on the west coast who gave it their best shot in los angeles all part of a competition at the

[laughter] >> all right, let's move on. >> let's move on. >> let him keep digging a hole. let's go. i said earlier about the weekend i wasn't sure about sunday. i'm going to explain why. i'm not copping out here. i'm not going to cop out on the sunday forecast. >> okay. >> but i'll explain why it's just a little tricky and it's going to go one way or the other obviously. it's a little hazy, not too bad and we've had enough sunshine today to get the numbers up into the upper 70's and low 80's and i think as we continue to watch back out to the west of us clouds will start streaming across in advance of a chance of a shower. look, there's maybe even a thunderstorm in here, too, but it looks like as it comes across the mountains the moisture is going to be interrupted a little bit as it comes across the mountains and then it will kind of regain

it's overall coverage. we're not talking about a big deal with these showers coming across or whether there's a thunderstorm here or there it wouldn't surprise me either. i do that want to zoom down and show the radar another way because way back out to the west we're beginning to see a little bit of it show up but all dry right now for i-81 and then inside of i-81 up and down i-95 p-the commute is not going to be -- it's not going to have any problems with this chance of showers because it looks like it's going to end up being just too late to be a big deal. it's 79 in town right now. baltimore is 80. westminster and frederick up there in northern sections of carroll county and frederick county low to mid 80's there. dulles sitting around 82 degrees or so, culpeper 81 and fredericksburg has made it up to 83 degrees. here's the evening forecast. 78 degrees or so, so pretty close to where we are right now, even at 7 o'clock, some clouds coming across. by 9 o'clock, i put in a shower. we'll have a few showers out there. again, maybe a rumble of thunder here or

but it looks like that's going to be widely scattered if it& even happens. by 11 o'clock, temperatures are down in the lower 70's, again mostly cloudy, a chance of a few showers coming across and i have to at least leave a chance of a shower in the forecast overnight tonight. but futurecast is not all that bullish at all over showers overnight. again, some this evening. by tomorrow morning, o 7:00 a.m., we should be dry with all of the rain such that it is off to the east of us, okay, so it looks like the morning commute should be fairly dry. question is, where is there going to be some patchy fog? i do believe we'll have some tomorrow morning and that eventually lifts and creates some clouds. so we won't start off completely sunny. we'll have some clouds, we'll have some fog and then as we progress through the morning hours, more and more sunshine and then by tomorrow afternoon it really does look nice. we'll have good amount of sunshine and temperatures are going to be local to mid 80's across the area. here's the deal for the weekend. we say weekend questions. really saturday right now is

going to happen. we think mix of sun and clouds. temperatures upper 80's to low 90's and the the low 90's depends on how much in the way of sunshine we get or where or when a few of the showers come across. there's a chance of a shower or a thunderstorm on saturday, there's no doubt about that but it doesn't look like it's going to be an all day washout. so really hot on saturday. here's the deal. you see this front to the north of us. sunday we're just not real sure how far south this front is going to push, okay. right now we're putting it right across the area, which should keep us in d.c. and the dmv in the 70's, probably the upper 70's, okay. everybody to the south of the front will be in the 80's and the 90's. farther north into the colder air you will mainly be upper 60's, low 70's. but if the front gets a little stronger pushed to the north and goes a little farther to the south, that puts most of us into the cooler air. so, while we're expecting that temperatures for sunday will be in the upper 70's,

could go a little bit different. it could be a little warmer but it could be cooler as well. so right now we'll go 78 degrees sunday. it's pretty much where we were yesterday so we haven't changed. sun and clouds a few showers possible. upper 80's to low 90's around here for saturday so that's going to be a real hot day. tomorrow clouds and fog, 69. we're already 80 degrees by lunchtime. 5 o'clock we're 84 degrees for a high. it looks gorgeous tomorrow afternoon. little hot and humid on saturday with a spotty thunderstorm around maybe a shower as well. 78 on sunday. again, give us some room here because this may change a little bit. we may have to lower that. i may be able to bring that up a little bit by tomorrow as well. we'll keep trying to figure that out. p.m. thunderstorms on monday, 85. sunny, cooler on tuesday, 78. sun and clouds wednesday 76 and it does look like towards the latter part of next week and then thursday, friday time frame, pretty good little system comes through and they bring us some good rain. right now it looks like we may end up with an inch to an inch and a half. i know it's a long way away but it looks like a pretty moist system

situation, flight attendants and gate agents allowed to hand out miles or other forms of compensations to passengers and if a airline permanently loses your bag you get $1,500. some are already in place. others will be rolled out soon. >> southwest airlines making plans to stop overbooking flights. last year southwest bumped 15,000 passengers that's more than any other u.s. airline actually. overbooking flights has recently come under scrutiny since that passenger we are talking about was pulled off that flight of united. southwest says the airline has been thinking about eliminating overbooking for awhile since there have been fewer no shows. >> they tighten up the policies on no shows on southwest. now they really charge down. you have to forfeit most if not all of your airfare. >> at the same time then the airlines need to give a little. >> sort of like when you have that reservation you still expect there took seat for you. >> oh, yeah and not get pulled off the flight.
