hospital. paul? >> reporter:. >> reporter: outside clifton perk consistent, hospital in jessup where this drag hunt has been going on since 9:40 this morning, what i learned a few minutes go from the director of the detention center in wycomoc county is that there is no security facility to pull a van into the back of that you say hospital. sometimes you might hear it referred to as a sally port and that you would then pull a fan in, a door would close behind it, and then the prisoner would get out. however, there is no sally port. what we understand happened here is that the guard got out of the van, opened the back door, and at that point, according to police, mr. watson pushed the door into the guard.

was out of his handcuffs, waist chain and disappeared into the woods. i asked the director a couple of minutes ago if, in fact, he was wearing shack else, handcuffs an waist chain when he left the facility. he said absolutely he was in all lee chains. however, when the police told us -- held a news conference at 2:30, they say they weren't sure whether or not he had shack else on his leg, but that's what the detention director told me just a couple of minutes ago by phone. that he was in shack else. now, there have been no reported sightings of this man in the last several hours. we've been listening to police channels and hearing some reports of people that were suspicious. the police have gone and checked all those out and so far, they have not found this manning. let's show you a little bit more about what we've been covering all day

>> it began just minutes after david watson escaped with his handcuffs and ran into a wooded area off dorsey run road and jessup. officers went through the woods and along railroad tracks that board an industrial area. police say watson as not in a secure area before the guard opened the door of the van. >> he was a last seen running into a wooded area neighbor dorsi run road. he was wearing all white clothing. and we did find a couple of articles of clothing in the woods. so we can't confirm for sure what he may be wearing at this time >> maryland state police sent a helicopter to search from above as officers on motorcycles went into the neighborhoods, industrial parks. some officers set up along the wood line in case watson just walked out. others kept an eye on old railroad track that is run through the woods. >> we don't believe he's

the guards from the detention center do carry weapons. however, they had secured those weapons in lock boxes inside the van before they opened the door so we don't believe he had access. >> reporter: police say they have no evidence to suggest this was preplanned or that he may have been getting help. watson was convicted in delaware after being charged with firing a gun at law enforcement officers. he faced similar charge in maryland but was found incompetent to stand trial. watson's trial in delaware happened quite a whiling: apparently, the judge felt right backing there was no remorse. it's report that day he has evil tattoo odd the

there's a teardrop coming from his eye. if you do see this man, police want you to call 911 but again, no recent sightings of him and it's several hours now, outside clifton t perk ins hospital, paul wagner a delaware state trooper was killed in the line of duty. the suspect left and later barricaded himself inside a home. the stand-off lasted for hours, as officers set off explosives, evacuated neighborhoods and lacked down schools >> the suspect emerged from the house and started firing at officers, police shot and killed him yesterday. we're remembering the fallen trooper. alexandra limon sat down for an exclusive interview with steven ballard's father. >> reporter: 32-year-old corporal ballard was an eight-year veteran. but grew up right here in maryland. he went to

i sat down to speak to his grieving father. >> it hurts. he'll always be remembered. >> reporter: did delaware state trooper corporal steven ballard, forever burned in his memory is the moment he got the call law enforcement families always fear and hope they never get. >> she said that steven was involved in the shooting, and it doesn't look good, he's in grave condition. i started crying. she put the phone, she said here, he can hear you. she put me on the speaker and put the phone next to his head and i was telling him how much i loved him. i'm on my way. you can't leave me, you're all i have. and i just told him, i said, i'm on my way. >> reporter: after talking to his

everything he could to get from his maryland home to delaware. despite an escort from prince george's county police and a helicopter provided by delaware state police he didn't make it. authorities in delaware sent corporal ballard stopped a car on wednesday for possible drug involvement. the passenger identified as 26-year-old seally allegedly pulled out a gun and chased him in a wawa convenience store and opened fire. ballard died at the hospital. >> my only son, and he not going to be able to grow up to have more children, grandkids, you know, he lost his life doing what he loved to do. remembering that infectious smile he was known for a big wide

things got and brotherhood and love they felt for law enforcement. >> everywhere we went, a memorial where he was shot at, people that i don't even know hugging us, hugged me and just cheered me up inside, because an innocent man lost his life doing what he loved to do. >> reporter: corporal ballard is survived by his wife, four-year-old stepdaughter, two sisters and parents. a memorial fund has been set up to help the family and funeral expenses are sets up. all week we heard some metro workers were organizing a planned sick, out. did it happen? the answer is no, metro received nearly 506 requests for bus and rail workers, a number higher than normal. but the transit agency

they met in the army 22 years ago. tonight, both are in a local hospital recovering from major surgery. they came together most recently after one posted a note on facebook asking for help. the other stepped up right away without hesitation. it was the mid 1990s when this picture was taken. robert harmon were serving together at fort bragg north carolina. >> it's the dialysis. >> 24 hours after a kidney transplant surgery. >> if i feel 100% better. >> that wasn't the case last year when ki got terribly sick. >> the doctors were saying, how are you even vertical at this point >> turns out his kidneys failed. he needed a transplant, so he got on a donor list and decided to use social media to reach out

school she she wants to know how her daughter was able to end up alone out on the streets. . she could have got hit by a car. anything could have happened to her. i just want to be safe when i drive my child off for school in the morning. she feels in a safe place. public schools provided this statement saying the safety and security of our students is our number one priority. we're looking into the allegation in this incident, we have meshes in place to insure students are in a safe learning environment and if the structures broke down we'll work to restore them. another concern from this child's family, they say police ere never notified when the girl went missing.
