campus. the latest incident allegedly target as predominantly black sore roar the. found hanging around several places on campus. the third reported case of a racist act on the campus this school year. melanie alnwick live in northwest with reaction. mel? >> reporter: good morning, guys. students here on campus say that they are very frus frustrated ad distressed by this incident. definitely they're trying to study here for final exams today supposed to be a study day. but this definitely a tacony-palmyra pick of discussion. it's weighing heavily on the minds of the student community here. the university president called these latest incidents cowardly, did he say despicable act. we'll show you pictures that were published in the student's newspaper showing bananas hanging on strings tied like nooses. bananas were found at three locations on campus. they had the words harambe and aka written on them. aka referring to

alpha a predominantly black sore roar the. back in september a member of the black student alliance had ba nan nan thrown at her while the group was preparing to demonstrate in support of black lives matter. days later, banana was placed at or near a black female stores door in residence hall that campus shocked now all of this is resurfacing. >> outrageous, horrible. i'm surprised that we had it in similar incident that happened again this that happened in the beginning of year. i'm hoping the university takes some action. >> having this happen in september and happening again in may as our first black woman student president is taking office is deeply frustrating. >> reporter: new sja president taylor dunson a member of the aka sorority. in letter to students she said... last night the black student alliance hell a meeting. it wasn't just for black

tended media was not allowed on campus to tendon but students provided us with photos you can see very well attended meeting there. and some students told us they really felt that more could have been done after the prior racial incidents in september. now, we did try to find out from american university how those prior incidents were handled. we were not able to get anyone to give us information on that. we can tell you that when we reported on these stories in september au said in one of the incidents they did handle it through the student conduct process. sort of tells that you it was handled within the university and au president saying in statement last night that they are bringing in d.c. police to help them investigate this incident. so perhaps they're taking it to that next level that some of these students would like to s see. they also again holding that meeting this afternoon where úthey promised to give more information. that is at noon today. and tonight also there is a

that's going on win the black community. good morning to both of you gentlemen. >> good morning. >> let's address melanie's story. what was happening on the campus of american university? we saw with the bananas being placed at the black sorority on campus after they elected the first black student to lead black female student to lead the student government association. your reaction to something like that happening on a campus at this day and time? >> well, i teach at georgetown, and obviously that's a dis disturbing fact. beyond that, you know, people make light of save spaces and micro aggressions and they say what's a micro aggression. can't you deal with it it's like a paper cut. it will cut you very fine. but the bleeding begins and then time after time after time a banana seems innocuous to people but it's an act of racial aggression. the campus president is identifying it as a coward the act and organizing student bodies to respond to it in a timely matter ton address the larger atmoser

atmosphere in which we exist given president we have in the united states of america right now has allowed this kind of aggression to come forward. >> right. >> we've had increase in a spike in hate crimes in the united states since the beginning of the year, and this all sort of fits in the atmosphere enables. it sort of says this is okay it's reprehensible. it should be condemn. it doesn't fit in modern ame america. >> all right. this is just one of the issues that the black community is facing. in the state of the black america that you guys are going to be talking about tonight, economics, jobs, education, all of those things. what have your findings shown so far. >> it's important that, you know, change is incremental so the index just the fact nos fake news stats. >> right. >> show that educational disparities have slightly narrowed, oh so slightly. health disparities have slightly narrowed. economic gaps remain almost the same as they were 40 years ago. so the challenges are very

year's state of black america report a report card on barack obama and we looked at things at the beginning of his term and at the end of his term and really measured whether there had been progress and according to that, when it comes to economics and education and health care, there was progress for the black community. we began in a trough of the great recession. so i report covers 2016. my comments on the current state of affairs are that we must resist any roll back. we must protect our progress. what's happening at the justice department, the roll backs in education, the possibility that in the fall you could have deep budget cuts that really impact people programs. they are causes for concern but they're also causes for us to be printed responsible activist it's and push back. >> professor, how do you become a principal responsible act activist? what can you do from the ground level to push back against some of this that may affect people in the community. >> join the national urban league and

[ laughter ] >> number one. funding, right. >> naacp, national action network, melanie campbell's black woman's round table. there are multitude of groups out there trying to address these issues. but as individuals, look, do what the president does. get on your twitter. get on your social media. now that's one response. some people mistake social media for social active you have fifty seven. it's a means towards an end not an end in itself. so then begin to, you know, think serious and strategically about these issues. write your congress people. talk to your local representative. talk, gosh to your local council meeting when it comes to the distribution of resources, that mr. more ya'll is speaking about, what we've got to think about how people in congress especially our black representatives leverage their authority to be able to make a set of demands as they've done 100 things or very important for the president to address for people to read this report and look at that economic disparity and then talk about the ways in which we can address them both system klee and in terms of the redress in terms of early childhood education

being expelled from school early on. all kinds of activism that can be engaged. >> we've got the main street more shall plan our comprehensive plan to invest 4 trillion into our communities over a ten-year period. >> okay. >> we encourage people to take look at that plan. there's all this conversation about infrastructure. a plan for urban america. the plan has been put out by the national urban league. and then in addition to n we'll be taping today a show which will broadcast on may 31st on tv1 between 8:00 and 10:00 p.m. so very exciting. there are opportunities through social media. >> right. >> through if you will viewing the report online and now through our television show for people to be part of this conversation. let's not leave this point behind. people have got to vote. >> right. >> all the social activism, all the social media is important but at the end of the day, it's who sits in the seat that has the power to make the decision

old, married a father, a grandfather, who was established to death inside his leesburg home here eight years ago. turns out a man who was a neihbor of his at the time was later convicted of murder in michigan. that man elias a bull son stabbed five people to death in flint michigan in 2010 much he's serving a life sentence. those murders in michigan were committed the year after mr. lane was killed here in leesburg. investigators in ohio are also looking at the israeli immigrant as a suspect in some stabbing cases there. a bull son was arrested in atlanta trying to flee to his native israel but he's currently in prison in michigan and we expect to hear from the commonwealth's attorney here loudoun county and also the leesburg police chief at 10:00 o'clock. in about 45 minutes here in front of the courthouse. what the status is of the investigation of mr. lane's

graduates other veterans and we decided to do what we can to stop it. the government is not helping us as much as we think we should. va is not helping so it cause a that goes far and deep into all the lives. >> what are you doing to help specifically. >> we provide peer to peer counselors. peer to peer coaches. we pay our coaches. so that we have their full attention so they're not volunteers. volunteers are great in our country but i have your full attention if you're on my payroll. with our peer to peer coaches ray lynn who's always chapter director there's nothing we haven't seen or been through. our coaches have been molested, raped, suicide attempts, ptsd, tbi. we walk the walk, we talk the talk and we have an army of folk ready to help any veteran struggling with of the issues you mentioned in the opening. >> ray lynn you're the point person here in the washington, d.c. area. >> yes. >> is that part of what actually helps you reach a lot of other people. they know, look, you've dealt with a loft these things they might be dealing with at the same time gives them a chance to open up feel comfortable coming on board. >> little

i actually am currently retiring through the military on active duty at walter reed in the wounded warrior program i was diagnose with ptsd depression and anxiety back in 2015 and one of things that i came to realize is that there's great and tremendous support while i'm in but once i'm out, some of the programs are limited to what i can access or who i can go to for support a lot of veterans that have gotten out that have had not very good success with some of their traumatic issues or being able to speak to someone they are more likely to talk to individuals that have been exactly where they are. i like to kind of compare it to anyone can walk by and say, hey, you really need to get out of that hole. but only someone that's been in the hole that's willing to climb down in there and say, hey, i'm with you, brother or sister, i know the way out. >> right

unfortunately you know rob you brought up the unfortunate number of suicides which is a number that is way too high. any time you hear about one you just say man i wish they would have reached out or done something. how do you get them to come to you before it gets to that point before they get to that desperation point they start thinking, yeah, maybe i do need to talk to somebody? >> what we try to do, steve, try to encourage our vets not to get to that saturation point. not to get to that crisis point. we'd like to talk to them earlier, and, you know, veterans are having hard time opening up. being a peer to peer or having that relationship helps us break down the barriers, break down the walls. folks like you, the media, social media, we have great consultants on our social media site getting the word out is so important to us. the vets have to trust someone, and oftentimes your family members don't understand you. your spouse. anyone in your circle may not really understand what youe

>> 10:23. back with one of the stories that's developing locally today. remember the frederick county parents involved in those controversial youtube videos. they said they were prank vi videos. well, this is not prank. reportedly the couple has lot of custody of two of their chi children. the daily mail reports mike and heather martin lost custody of their son cody the youngster right there and his sister emma to their biological mother. nine-year-old cody was the subject of the prank video that caught nationwide attention which mike and heather blamed him for leaving a mess he didn't make. leaving him in tears. in a new youtube video cody and emma's biological mother rose seen there alongside of her attorney says she now has emergency custody

children following backlash from the prank videos. cody and emma's father and stepmother released video apology as well. the prank videos were removed ffrom there youtube channel. >> want to take you to leesburg virginia. the stabbing death avenue man that happened back in 2009. in his murder, criminally linked to man already serving a life sentence for stabbing spree that's the question. fox5's bob barnard life in leesburg now with an update. bob. >> reporter: maureen, this is a convicted serial killer serving a live prison sentence in michigan who has apparently in the last two weeks confessed to the murder here in leesburg eight years ago. some of the victims family members his then wife and daughter and grandson are here. jamie lane was stabbed to death inside his leesburg home on march 26th, 2009. the man who is now confessed was a neighbor of his at the time who later went on a killing spree up in michigan also suspected in a stabbing case

ohio again that man is now se serving a life sentence his name is elias abul son. he's an immigrant from israel who for years refused to talk to police, denied any involvement in the case here but we're told has met with leesburg police detectives in the last couple of weeks in his prison in michigan admitted to the murder. no necessary motive to the killing of his neighbor. but what prosecutors here the commonwealth's attorney says with the confession they granted this man immunity so he will not be brought here and prosecuted in virginia for the murder here in leesburg. they'll leave him in prison because he's serving a life sentence and frankly quell's attorney said she didn't want to take the risk of transporting a convicted serial killer here to virginia in the case that somehow something went wrong. he got free or what have you. so they'll stay prison confessed to the murder here in leesburg will not be charged but there's now some resolution

[ laughter ] >> that's right. you know that. >> right, right. let's talk about brooklyn nine-nine. the episode that's about to air. we know this is a comedy. you're a funny guy but you're dealing with pretty serious matter we're talking about racial profiling because your character in this next episode was racially profile. >> yes. look i got to say i feel like the best comedy has always dealt with very very serious subjects. you talking about dave chap chappelle, george carlin, chris rock they've always dealt with this kind of stuff with comedy and the same thing happens with, you know, comedic episodes

i think it's no different with television that, you know, when we deal with a subject like this, actually based on things that have actually happened to me in my life. i've been racially profiled many, many times. and it's kind of deals with some things that i've told to the writers of the show and the whole thing, and it's kind of opens up a whole new argument and a whole new way of looking at the police because we play cops on the show. >> right. >> what if we get profiled? so it deals with the question as african-american am i blew? or am i black? >> right. >> this is kind of a wild wonderful subject to deal with it is a really fun episode. >> i want to get back to the show in just a second you just mentioned the fact that you have been racially profiled before and my understanding is that one of the times this happened to you you were at the airport and one of the reasons that they profiled you is because you were a big guy they thought you were a drug dealer because you paid for your tick in cash? >> that's exactly

i wasn't just at the airport. i was on the plane, in front of everybody. the cops came on the plane, pulled me off in front of everyone, and questioned me in the jet way about what was the nature of my business. they found out i was a football player. then they wanted my autograph. that blew me away. now, again, i was realized they let me go, even took the flight. but then i had to question like if i was that a football player, would i have been arrested? what would i have had to go through because i wasn't so hiv called famous or rich or athlete that kind of thing, and this is the kind of stuff that people go through every day and they're not famous. it makes you think and wonder, you know, what's going on? >> i -- it's happened to me, and i'm sure it's happening all over the place. you just have to always question these things and bring these things up so we can talk about it. >> right. back to the show. what is it that you hope people

do see this particular episode because it is, again, it's a funny show, but it's a serious matter? what do you hope people take away from this? >> you know what, one thing -- you know i hope that everyone gets from this is empathy. empathy on both sides. what's so crazy is that we tend to be empathetic to a lot of the community but we're not empathetic to what the police officers have to do and you're talking about african-americans that are also police officers. how they have to deal within their own structure. this is why. this is a great argument that andre brower and i have in this episode about whether i should file complaint or whether i shouldn't. or whether they'll it had hurt my career. i think this is a whole new drama and a whole new take on a subject that everybody has been dealing with over the last few years. >> right. was it hard to get this particular concept and this idea even on the screen like with the writers and

network and everybody? everybody was on board with it? >> no. everybody was great with it. >> okay. >> in fact our creator dan gore is one of the most progressive amazing people and he -- it was his idea actually, and he wanted to handle it with all the gusto without making it light or ma making it trite but dealing with comedy but also, upping, dealing with it in a very realistic way, and not in cartoon knee way. >> right. >> and let me tell you the whole cast was on board. it was very very special. we were -- it was -- i mean i have to say it was very very emotional but it wasn't uncomfortable for anybody. >> gotcha. okay. terry, what else are you working on? >> other than the pecks and the muscles and all that other kind of stuff? >> more old spice coming. >> oh really. >> more old spice? >> it's coming. it's coming. i smell good right now.
