. a hostage standoff in illinois is over, officers shot and killed a prisoner being treated at the hospital outside of chicago. we're told that inmate wrestled a gun away from a correctional officer. this afternoon and held an employee at the hospital at gunpoint. when negotiations to free the employee broke down, a swat team moved in. officers shot and killed the inmate, who was jailed for allegedly stealing car. the hostage was not hurt. ohio, the motive for a deadly shooting at a nursing home is unclear. shooting left three people dead including the town's police chief. two other victims were employees of the nursing home. the gunman has been identified as 43-year-old thomas heartless later killed himself. officials believe the police chief was ambushed while responding to the reports of a man with a gun. today thousands gathered on the national mall to honor officers who died in the line of duty. >>

start of national police week, three officers are among those being remembered >> lindsey watts joins us from the mall with more. i've been looking at what you're posting, sad but beautiful. >> reporter: the vigil wrapped up within last 30 minutes. the crowd was incredible. organizers prepared to 30,000 people out here. all of these seats behind me were filled, behind that, people standing law enforcement from all over the nation is in town for this. there are three officers from our area who made the ultimate sacrifice. and we're honored here tonight. prince george's county officer cold son was shot by another officer after mistaken for a suspect. prince william's county officer ashley gwen den fatally shot during the first shift. and arlington county corporal harvey snook died to

911 when he responded to the attack on the pennsauken. we'll show you video from earlier. a beautiful image of the standing room crowd with candles lit. organizers and police have talked to say the crowds just get bigger and bigger as the years go by, a lot want to come out and support the fallen heros and families. attorney general jeff sessions was among those who spoke and then the names of the nearly 400 officers were read. 143 were killed this year. rest died in the past but for different reasons, their sacrifice wasn't formally recognized before now. prince george's county hank read out the officers' names for the state of maryland, and he stayed behind to talk to us tonight. of the chief liked to participate in this event especially recognizing one of your own officers >> this is also a humbling experience
