firetruck goes up in flames at the station. the latest on the investigation into the cause the fire. fox5 local news starts now. we begin with that story you will see first on fox5, a man attacked on a metro platform is sharing his account of what happened. thanks for joining us, i'm lauren demarco and i'm jim lokay. the victim talked with fox5's marina maracco. she's live now with what he had to say about what happened on friday. marina. >>reporter: jim, lauren, this man says nothing was stolen off his person. it was simply a vicious attack. he was inside the metro here the at gallery place. 6:00 it was a packed train when he was attacked by a pack of young men. he says he can't say how many there were, but there were more than five. take a look at how he walked away from this all, his face bruised, his jaw swollen and his hand now will likely reqre

wants to do is find the good samaritan who intervened and helped stop what could have been far worse. >> i was pulled down onto the platform floor, people beating on me. they pushed me towards the train which at that point was starting to accelerate and my hand hit the train and i've now broken my hand and may need to have surgery. but there was a good samaritan from gw law school who jumped in and if it wasn't for him i would have gotten worse of it than i dcht he got beat up. i didn't get his full name, but if there is a hero that comes out of this, it's him. this certainly shouldn't happen anywhere. it certainly certainly shouldn't happen in the nation's capital on friday evening at 6:00. i'll be okay. i'm worried about the nex person who maybe isn't quite as lucky as i i

not be a good samaritan gw law school the next time. he's hoping the good samaritan \see\seas the story so he can thank hivment we've also reached out to metro. we're also waiting to hear back. live tonight in northwest d.c. marina maracco, fox5 local news. >> we're also learning about another violent incident on metro. police were called to the van necessary station this morning to deal with a fight that broke out. three men were involved. one of the men suffered a cut to his face. he was taken to a hospital for treatment much the other two people were arrested and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon. the incident caused some minor delays on the redline while police investigated. after a hate crime at a maryland middle school community members joined forces to respond with local. earlier this weekend anne arrundel police arrested two men who they say hung a noose at crofton middle school. they showed up today to write kind

messages to the students. lindsay watts with the story. >>reporter: this is the result of all of those people coming together today. this is what students are going to see as they come into school tomorrow. messages like love never fails and always be happy. these messages stretch all around the building. i've lived in krof ton for eleven years and i know this to be a welcome and inviting and positive community the fact that all of you came out today to spread that message and to make it loud and clear that hate will not be tolerated and that kindness always wins, it's so appreciated. a sea of people at krof ton middle school, chalk in hand. the goal was to bring some beauty here after the ultra letter act. at first i

rope hanging from just a light for some reason. but then i looked closely and i saw what it actually was and i was shocked. she called me twice. she wanted to be picked up from school. i was actually really sad. i felt like -- i wanted to go home, but i didn't go home because i didn't want them to be happy that we were reacting to it. this is the reaction she and her family wanted to be part of. the fact that my community projected it the way that they did and all showed up on mother's day of all dayses really makes a difference to me with so much help the pavement was covered with positive messages and i am mamgs in less than an hour. the front of the building stretching around to the back. students will have a lot to look at as they come into school and hopefully this will serve as a reminder. >> a whole school with a thousand

going around town in the week ahead and we are starting off with some really big name acts here in d.c. dmx will be performing at howard theater and the weekend will also be here thursday. he's playing at the verizon centerment on friday the verizon center is hosting church and then on friday jimmy buffet will take the stage. the preakness stakes be held in bawment more and there is a number of. think a whole lot of hot air balloons. you can take rides in them, live music, food and a beer garden it's being held at the howard county fairgrounds on wednesday and thursday. and there's a special mass balloon asengs. i know it's a little bit of a drive, but if you're up there here is another event in howard county. wine in the woods. here's a huge wine festival and it's celebrating its 125th

>> this is fox5 local news at 10. welcome back, as most of you head back to work tomorrow, some country as and governments around the globe are bracing for the possibility of another crippling cyber attack, the ransom wear virus hit last week it hits

computers in more than 1350 countries. one of the largest cyber attacks a\ever\of hit 150 countries and the number will continue to jump. monday when everyone returns to the office that this ransom wear attack will be even larger. this is a very serious problem and i think it's going to grow. interest per poll, the europe union's association believes the mal\wear\ware started to spread friday and then struck other country's networks including germany, spain, china, russia and india. it's certainly not a uk problem. it's an international problem. many of those will be businesses including large corporations like we see in fed ex. the hack caused major service disruptions in the united kingdoms leaving doctors unable

patient's records. the electronic ticket system for the railways were affected. it is now being called ransom ware, threatening to keep the users' electronics locked until the users pay a ransom. we've seen the rise of ransom wear becoming the principal cyber threat. but this is something we haven't seen before. the hackers exploited a vicious cyber weapon. microsoft recently release a patch. but those who have not updated their pcs continue to be at risk. it's too soon to know who is behind the attack and if there could be any more in the near future. will car, fox news. >> that stuff is scary. well, awesome day. clearly mother

at all. but the winds were a big factor today and peak wind gusts anywhere from at least 35 to 40 miles per hour and it's still pretty gusty out there. let's take a look at what's happening. wind gusts from about p 20 to 36 miles per hour we will see improvement in the overnight hours, but i want to tell you that tomorrow it will be another windy day, not quite as windy as tomorrow, but just fair warning. the clouds are gradually moving out. we've got a ridge of high pressure that's going to be a little bit more in control to help get rid of these clouds and just an odd little sprinkle l or two, nothing to be too concerned about, most of it to areas of our north. and overnight lowe's are going to be in the 40s to low 50s. it will be fairly comfortable out there for tonight and things are really improving into the week. as we set you up for the beginning of your workweek, here's your planner for tomorrow. by the 11:00 hour, 67, heating up to 70 by 2:0

>> if you traveled near the national mall and west potomac park today you may have noticed thousands of people riding their bikes. it was the annual d.c. bike ride. it's 20 miles long. the event celebrates d.c. culture and allows participants to ride past some of the top landmarks in the city. some of the money raised goes to the bicyclist association and their effort to support street safety t. it looks like a fun time. >> and it's a good group. >> it was an extra special day for one mother in texas. her college just graduated from college. he is 14 years old. fourteen year old carson she hew was the youngest person to graduate from high

earned a degree in physics. he is going to be in the graduate program in the fall. his brother is a. do they live together? do they live at home they're 14 and 11. i hope they get some fun, too. >> one local woman is finally getting her degree more than 50 years after her college journey began, 79 year old lucy johnson graduated this weekend from university of maryland university college with a degree in human resources. johnson says she left school and wanted to wait until after her children graduated from college themselves before she went back after they graduated from l could edge, my oldest son decided to give me a computer. well, it's time for me to go back.
