(inaudible) >> my god. didn't have to. >> i told you to save that lady, man. >> she was high. at 4:24 tuesday evening, dc first got a call for a traffic accident mere the recreation center on joel yet street southwest an few minutes later, the call was upgraded to a woman with a gun. >> when they arrived on the scene, they located an adult female holding a black semiautomatic handgun. the officers gave multiple instructions to drop the weapon. the suspect did not drop the weapon after multiple

commands. of she raised her arm with the weapon in it towards the officers, two police officers fired. she was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. >> it's unclear why i see bell duval was in the neighborhood but one witness said after she crashed the car, she got out and waved the gun around. another witness said she told people who came to help she had a weapon and a warrant for her arrest >> we thought somebody threw something in the trash can, a kid rolled his bike. of i told him a white lady crashed her car, got her knee busted and she was like don't call the police officer because she had a warrant and had a gun in her purse. i turned around and calm over here, and i guess he was arguing with somebody or something like that and she had the gun out they called the cops. >> reporter: they released a photograph of the gun, they recovered from the scene. this is the second fatal police shooting this year in the

to stop hurting the dogs who were foaming at the mouth and unresponsive. mia was vomiting blood and suffered damage to her lungs, according to court documents >> this was a savage attack against these animals, and i will tell you it was a difficult situation besides the abuse on the animals, there was the resistance to the police officer. these good men and women from the montgomery county police are out there rolling around on the ground trying to save the life these dogs. >> in court, jones said he was sorry and his defense was that he didn't intentionally try to hurt the dogs on that night in june of 2015. his attorney said he bought and smoked what he thought was marijuana. but turned out to be k 2, a synthetic substance with effects similar to pcp. but neither the judge thought that was strong enough to excuse the attack. he was sentenced to six months in jail plus additionaliv

years probation. >> he made the choice to do the drugs. his actions after that, you know, he made that choice. >> reporter: now, those dogs are now two years old and they had no long lasting effects to their health. today in court, jones was in custody in a prison jump suit, not because of this crime, but because he's serving a one-year sentence for unlawful possession of a firearm in the district of columbia. reporting in rockville, alexandra limon fox 5 local news. new details about this violent fight that broke out outside the turkey embassy yesterday. several protesting the president's visit to dc were left bloodied and beaten they say by supporters of the turkey government. a total of 11 were injured including a police officer. dc police arrested two

they now face assault charges. today, police chief peter newsham spoke out about this incident. >> that's not something we will tolerate here in washington, dc. this is a city where people should be allowed to come and peacefully protest. the police involvement in that case was dicey because there were people up there who did have firearms and had to safely restore order and thankfully that was done without more significant injury to anybody. >> reporter: mayor bowser issuing a statement condemning the violent attack. calls from capitol hill for cannabis reform. eleanor holmes norton going so far to call it a civil rights issue and urging studies on racial studies. coinciding with a major cannabis convention, it's the marijuana business and conference

capitol hill today and ronica cleary live on the hill with more about the future of marijuana legalization. this is a huge industry these days. >> it really is a huge industry, jim and to add to the remarks that eleanor homes norton said this morning on the hill. she spoke about removing regulation that is exist right here in dc that really limit the district from profiting off the sale of marijuana. and that is a lot of the focus of today's remarks talking about making it a state's rights issue allowing these pot businesses to use banks, limiting the federal tax limitations that sort of force these businesses to pay more in taxes. i want to take you through a few of the statistics that they use to sort of sell the idea of legaling marijuana in a business, friendly way. one study found it would create over 250,000 jobs by 2020. here's an interesting fact. the legal marijuana industry out sold products like

tequila in 2016 and in 2016, legal sales increased by 30%. ands sales projected for legal marijuana in 2017 they're expected to continue to grow. estimates putting the industry at between 5 and 6 billion dollars. to help me make sense of this, we got taylor west, the deputy director of the national cannabis industry association. just quickly tell me about what you were on the hill for yesterday and today. >> we had more than 250 of our members from across the country here on the hill to talk with members of congress and their staff about the need to change federal policy. >> reporter: let's talk a little bit about what eleanor homes norton said about these regulations that limit dc from really profiting off the sale of marijuana. do you think that that might change for the district? >> it's really going to depend on whether a few republicans decide to respect the will of voters in dc. a couple of out of city, out of district republicans have blocked

put in place a regulatory program that would allow them to collect taxes and control the sale of marijuana here in the district. >> reporter: you're talking about republicans. with this administration, it's more than a few republicans, listen to some sound from the attorney general jeff sessions some of the remarks that he said that reflect the feelings of the administration on the future of legalization of pot across the country. take a listen. >> i'm not sure we're going to be a better healthier nation if we shave marijuana being so. ed my feeling is we don't need to be legalizing marijuana and we need to crack down more effectively on heroin and fet nola, do you think you'll see success or do you think you'll have to focus o

a lot to do with the wind direction. south wind tends to reflect the potomac river but when you talk about the heat index when you combine the temperature and humidity feels like the upper 90's in a few spots like frederick to the low 90's or near 99 here in the district. so definitely a very toasty evening and we got one more we've got to get through tomorrow. we may see an isolated shower or storm in a few spots tonight. we have a little bit of cloud cover approaching, wouldn't be shocked if there were a couple of spots. maybe, just maybe, something was trying to develop here just underneath our interstate 81 sign. i'll keep an eye on that and let you know if i see anything. if it does, you're one of lucky ones it would cool you off. isolated and nonsevere. wanted to mention, you can see a couple little storms developing, gate concern about what happened last night in the middle part of the country, and now, again, today, in the red box here, we have tornado watches up as you can see for parts of illinois,

iowa and also into michigan. last night, about 27 reports of tornados stretched from wisconsin with a tremendous amount of damage all the way down to the texas pan handle. hopefully the outbreak won't be as severe. but as we focus on our weather back here in the midatlantic, it's another hot day to get through on thursday. not thinking we challenge the record at reagan because it's really high at 96, but it's 91 degree record at dulles. and that one could be in jeopardy. as for tomorrow, we also have another code orange air quality alert to let you know that thursday may be one of those days where the air is not necessarily the healthierest if you have an ongoing respiratory condition, exercise early or late in the day to bypass worst which will be going downhill. the relief will get here in time for the weekend. we'll talk more coming up with our seven-day forecast coming up in minutes. we want to get you to breaking news in virginia. this is arlington where

shooting. we're being told by arlington county police is that officers were trying to conduct a traffic stop when the officer was approaching the car, the driver attempted to hit the officer. officer fired shots hitting the driver. the driver has life-threatening injuries. we're being told the officer suffered serious injuries as well >> to give you a point of reference, the initial report came down was 395. what you're looking at appears it's not necessarily on 395 but one of the house rams there's a lot of apartments nearby. if you know anybody who takes that ramp 395 southbound to the gleeb road, they're going to hit delays >> one person we do understand is in critical condition. another person had

on a clear day, not an overflowing river during a brutal rain storm, bob barnard in ellicott city for us today. >> reporter: the water main break i was big and powerful enough to partially swallow a car parked along the hilly curb where the 12 inch pipe burst underneath main street in ellicott city before 3:30 this morning. that car belongs to jen riley. >> i woke up to a knock on my door around 3:30 in the morning, and there was the police asking if that was my car parked on the street there. so i walked outside and sure enough, there is water gushing out from underneath the car. yeah, they said that it's probably totaled at this point. >> reporter: the water gushed more than five hours before howard county public work crews to get it to stop. this view from skyfox. we're told the basements from two nearby homes were flooded with four feet of water. shutting off the flow proving to be a

this is fox 5 local news at 5:00. up first, a dc man is under arrest for a 2007 cold case murder in land over hills. 49-year-old darryl strictland is accused of strangling a woman to death in the 3900 block of 62nd avenue. she was 44-year-old sharon you can'ting half strictland is charged with first and second degree murder and being held without bond. in arlington, police are investigating report of an assault on a teacher at an elementary school. a student hit with a sewing tool. they sent a letter home to parents to take the appropriate action to make sure students

fire investigators try to figure out what started this fire on spring oak courts. three people were injured. two suffering severe burns. a family cat was killed in the fire, two dogs still unaccounted for. tonight, there are big developments in the latest story rocking the trump administration. the allegation that the president asked former fbi director james comey to shutdown the investigation of michael flynn's ties to russia before trump himself fired comey >> it was announced that comey has been called to testify before congress next week. fox 5 tom fitzgerald live at fbi headquarters. we know the democrats have been pounding the president. republicans sounds like they're changing their tone just a bit. >> reporter: that appeared to be the case. here at fbi headquarters today, the acting director, andrew mccabe has two letters in his position, one from the house oversight committee. another from the senate intelligence committee. both of them asking for the

information. >> reporter: now, the chairman of the house oversight committee republican jason shafitz announced he scheduled a hearing next wednesday at 10:30 for james comey to testify publicly. it is far from certain as to whether or not comey is even going to appear at that hearing. shafitz tweeting it appears comey changed his phone number. the chairman had trouble reaching him by phone. on the senate side, the vice chairman of the senate intelligence committee virginia's mark warner restated his opinion that he wants comey to testify before that panel. now, throughout the halls of congress, many republicans seem to quiet their full-throated endorsement and defense of the president. however, democrats seem to have a split on their end as well between those continuing to attack the administration and others who are saying it is

in. i would have gotten worse than i did. the man attacked on metro's red line last week says a good samaritan prevented him from suffering more serious injuries. john reilly told fox 5 it happened as he was coming back from the gallery play station and talking about the student who helped him out. lauren? >> reporter: this wasn't is so disturbing when you think about it. there's really no known motive, so this guy, john reilly was supposed to go to a nats game. it was rained out. he was off to meet a friend. he got off of the train at the gallery place stop and attacked by a group of young juveniles. take a look at some of these images that we have, because you can see that his hand was broken. he suffered several broken bones, tossed by these young mentored the moving train and hit the train. then kicked in the face. you see bruising and swelling to his face. well, it took about five minutes

or so for a metro transit police to arrive within that time, a 23-year-old georgetown law student saw this happening, was part of the oh crowd and decided to step in, putting himself at risk. today, reilly and this young man met to talk about what happened. take a look. fact that violence exists in the world. and the question is really more so -- what are we going to do about it? >> this incident resolidifies my desire to make sure whatever career i go into i make a difference >> i'm a former federal prosecutor trying to nudge him in that direction. you know, the word hero is thrown around casually, sports heros, all sorts of heros. this guy is a hero. >> reporter: the young man's name is

he was punched back behind his ear, and suffered a slight concussion. the two were glad to have met back up and go over everything. police have announced there have been two arrests in this case. they thought that there were several suspects, five or six, apparently only two of these juveniles carried out the attack. and as most of the metro transit police officers rushed toward the victims, one officer started trailing the suspects, got on a train with them. was able to talk with the video techs looking at surveillance video, in real time and identity the two that actually carried out the attack, the arrest was made right there within minutes at the union station. of metro stop. so again, two juveniles under arrest, one of them 15. one of them 16 tonight. the latest in northwest. if you think it's hot outside, try farragut north and dupont circle >> we'll is explain the problem as commuters pretty heated. what's being don

usually here in our building it's too cool today i'm loving it. we talked yesterday that we may break records. these were the records to beat. did we do it? here are the high temperatures. we tied it at bwi. did not give or take at remaining our high was 91, we did not break the record at dulles. of it was 92. record was 93. we miss that day one by one degree as well. guess what? we have another chance at getting the record tomorrow at dulles at bermuda high pressure will continue to pump in heat tomorrow it's less hot friday. but still temperatures getting into the low 90's thursday and to near 90 on friday before we can get a cool front through, here that will start to break the heat. let's run you through the weather headlines, we'll have again, the two more hot days ahead and the humidity definitely getting higher. we'll see likely some scattered storms developing friday afternoon ahead of our frontal boundary. this going to come on through and bring us less hot air for the weekend.
