>> i was shocked. you never think you're going to die, but that was very hard. >> fox5 was there as she was reunited with the officer who especially hed save her life. and the national debate over confederate symbols comes to northern virginia. will a local school named after a confederate general make a change. >> the news at ten starts now. >> ominous clouds, lightening rain, that's what we've been seeing in our skies over our area nievment i'm tony perkins and i'm shawn yancy. now, those storms knocked out power to a little more than 7,000 people in northern virginia. let's get right to sue palka to find out if the storms are behind us. >> it's still going down strong across charles county, but it is weakening a lot. believe it or not. that was one big super cell storm that affected so many areas. we tracked it for several hours and i love h this picture sent to me. it's a time lapse actually of the storm coming through dale city. this is

you can see all the structure with it, the boiling clouds. a shelf cloud associated with the very strong storm. look at all a the clouds pulling up into the system and even at the end you begin to see a little l momatus cloud cover. that's pretty rare for our area. more in a moment where is that storm now? i know not everybody saw it. i'll bet you saw some clouds. what's left of the storm now as itself weakening considerably is it's down over charles county. at one point this storm was produce 3,000 lightning strikes ever r every zero minutes or so. it still has some pretty heavy rain with it. it has some littenning. previously it was producing a the look of hail as it came through northern virginia and at least one wind gust to 66 miles an hour. i'm putting it all in motion. look at awm of the lightening as it moved first east and then southeast. so just about done

now i asked mayor bowser's office what they plan to do about this. we pointed out how they could really use some speed bumps and some crosswalks. i just received a statementment it says the bowser administration extends our sympathy to the family of exaifier lucky. mpd is investigating the tragedy and as we continue to work on vision zero the government will review and implement safety measures. >> live in southeast, lauren demarco, fox5 local news. >> police in prince george's county county are investigating a deadly crash involving a school bus in temple hills. fox5's marina maracco has the very latest. >>reporter: a lot night ahead for investigators who are trying to determine how this accident at the height of rush hour happened. you could see the car involved completely charred ahead of the school bus. witnesses say the car and the bus were traveling in opposite directions when they collided. the car was ins

in flames. these are pictures that were taken by neighbors here on the scene. the driver was trapped and died inside that vehicle. on the bus thankfully no children. both driver and the aid walked away without injuries. police tell fox5 there was a call for shots fired just before the call for this crash. police now trying to determine if both scenes are now connected. they've yet to identify the victim. in primtion, marina maracco, fox5 local news. >> and new to a fox5 exclusive. a bicyclist who almost lost her live in a hit and run crash is sharing her story. it's been three weeks now since a driver hit her off route 109 in al any tonight police still don't have any suspects. but today she was reunited with the police officer who helped save her life. fox5's angelica lee anjali hemphill was there for the emotional reunion? a. there is a stretch that doesn't have any

sidewalks to ride on forcing bicyclists onto the road. something mary hopes will change. it's good to see you standing and walking. >> thank you so much. >> the last time sergeant i liej yeah pinker saw mary, he believed it would be their first and only unfortunate encounter. >> i didn't think she wassing whying to make it. there was pretty extensive injuries. i knew that time was critical for her. mary was hit by a car on the evening of april 27 as she was riding her bike along route 108 in olney. i looked to the left and the right and i didn't see anybody. i looked over at the alien house. it was a nice night april i noticed how busy it was and that's the last thipg i remember. sergeant kinser was the first officer to arrive and found mary with a serious head injury lying in the mid fl the treat, her

across the road. the people who saw the collision, it happened so fast to them that they didn't recognize that they needed to remember what they saw. and, in fact, one of the witnesses said i thought that the car hit a deer in front of me and that's what p a? a. i have a fractured right hip, a frak your ted vertebrae, a frak your ted right shoulder, a broken left thumb and brain trauma on my left side. mary now uses a walker to get around and she will have many months of recovery ahead. meanwhile the driver still has not been found there's no question that this person knew that they hit something. there's no way that they wouldn't have known and for them to drive off is very disturbing. since her accident mary's friends have placed these signs near the intersection hoping someone with information will come for. mary has used a bike as her main

transportation or more than a decade and often spends her times for bicyclists safety. i do ride in the middle of the lane as the law permits when i have to ride in the lane. unfortunately in olney there's lots of areas that don't have shoulders and sidewalks so i am forced to do that. i wish we had a little more education in the community on a normal basis there is very little suspect information, but police are looking for a light or silver colored pickup. >> next at ten, she was jailed on riek ers' i rapped when she was just 14 years old after being busted for prostitution. her pimps lied about her so they could keep her trafficking for profit. we're going to tell how she managed to escape the life, rebuild and help others. teisha? a. and the battle continues

director james comey to back dwown on the investigation into former national security advisor michael flynn. the debate over confederate monday ultimates and symbols that sparked a national discussion. in fact, it led to the recent removal of several confederate statutes. there's talk of renaming a high school named after a confederate general. >>reporter: shawn, that talk has been very devisive here at jeb stuart high school, one of the many diverse high schools across fairfield county. the decision on renaming jeb stuart high school is just getting started and there was plenty of conversation on both sides of the issue. as the sunset, several police cruisers lined along jeb stuart high school just in case the community meeting got out of hand. the topic on the

trafficking i had been experiencing tram a in my own home. traffickers look for vulnerable people. it doesn't matter if it's a 25 year old runaway or a 35 year old man. i was a vulnerable child and iran away from that situation, but also looking for somebody to protect me and love me, what every child wants. wherever there is children there are pred take iters, right? a. how do we prevent other young girls or victims from falling into this trap. you really do have to listen to your children you really have to take that and control it. but you have to spend time with your children and you have to ensure that they have self-esteem and high self worth because that self-esteem, that wall of self-esteem will deflect traffickers who are looking for the most vulnerable the title of your book is nobody's

heartbroken family and friends gather to mourn the little boy who was killed on his birthday while crossing the street in d.c. then she's an undocumented immigrant now in custody. her only criminal history a traffic citation. how civil rights organizations are working to help the local meteorologist of two. and getting help for veterans. the us military is turning to yoga a to assist our brave men and women returning from balt. and thank you for staying with us everyone, i'm sarah simmons and i'm shawn yancy. jim has the night of off. our first top story tonight. an out powering of support for a d.c. family dealing with a heart pren much tragedy. six year old xavier was struck by a car. xavier was crossing livingston road southeast when he was hit and killed. it happened during his birthday cookout. the little boy turned six years old

yesterday. family and friends are devastated. as we were standing at the vigil, cars were flying by, speeding present this area where it should only be 25 miles per hour. this was initially called a hit and run, but the driver did end up calling police himself. no charges yet, but the investigation continues and the bowser administration sent us a statement this evening saying in part as we continue our work on vision zero, the district government will review and implement safety measures. vision zero being the road and highway safety project. the battle continues over changing the name of the high school jeb federal. the superintendent will use their testimony to make a decision then it will be up to the school board. there is no word when that final decision will be made. president trump is calling the investigation into potential ties between his 2016 campaign and russia, a witch hun

strong, very severe storm. it was actually one big storm that moved from the northern virginia area all the way down into charles county and that's where it's at tonight. actually moving into calvert county and there's one in king george. really very little left of h this h one. i think we can sound the all clear for tonight let's get you caught up on your weather headlines. for start ers we have one more head day tomorrow. it will be likely up and over 930. at reagan national it stayed in the up 930s, but a lot of other place he it was tough to stay out there. humidity provided fuel for our storms. we'll see some more storms around tomorrow. we expect that because a frontal boundary is coming and it's going to be chasing the heat out of town. quite a change as we head for the weekend. a big cool down expected as we go from the 90s to the 70s and maybe the low 70s at that. it looks like so far so good in terms of rain if anything, a spotty

clouds than the sun as we head on into the weekend. those are the headlines. we'll have specifics with the seven day forecast in just a little bit. >> a virginia woman who is an undocumented immigrant is now being detained by ice. other than a traffic violation she hasn't been in trouble with the law. now, civil rights organizations are bantding together to try to step in to try to help the local mother of two. fox5's alexandra limon has the story. >>reporter: 30 year old cruz mendez dose arrived at the ice field office thursday morning for a regularly scheduled check in. but she didn't go home with them. according to organizations like cost a and peco national network that held press conferences to support her she was detained by ice and transferred to woodbridge where she's being processed for deportation. even though she has no criminal background, only a traffic violation, according to the org

distraught. she has two young children. the father right now is going to the school to let the children know he's going to pick them up early and let them know that what has happened. everybody is very distraught and we're concerned for her and hoping that she's reunited with her family tonight. all of this comes on the heels of new numbers release by ice that show a nearly 40 percent of increase in deportations during trump's 100 days in office compared to the same period in 2016. according to ice those people are known of being in the country illegally. the report of 75 percent of those arrested had criminal offenses ranging from homicides to drug charges, but it also points to data that shows people with no criminal records jumped nearly 150 percent from 4200 in 2016 to 10,800 in 2017. the

restorative yoga where it moves slowly. you have lots of props i often hear people tell me i can't do yoga. i'm not flexible. my answer to that is that's the point of doing yoga. you'll become more flexible. and you will learn to do it in small stages. and it's also not a competition. jeff sergeant spent two decades in the u.s. army fighting in iraq and afghanistan. he now suffers from posttraumatic stress disorder. a friend mentioned doing yoga, but sergeant was skeptical. after taking a class it all changed. it's hard to get people to understand how effective it can be until they've tried it. it's kind of one of those things where you have to experience it. it's not just one you can read about. the retired army major veteran is not only treating his ptsd with yoga, but is also sharing it with his

members. it's a way that i can still give back to that community who sacrifices so much for all of us. sergeant says yoga's he's been able to push away past memories and focus on the present. he says yoga saved his life and hopes it can others like him. tree theresa jones says it has kept her focusedded, allow me to do breathing techniques on my own whenever i'm anxious or frustrated. it has just, you know, gave me a sense of piece in my life. jeff graduates with master's degree in yoga therapy this july. in new york, julie ban dares, fox news. >> speaking of

weather,. >> that storm has fistula illed it's a time lapse of this storm it was really bad in northern virginia and kate disawn was time lapsing this in dale city much watching the leading edge of that structure, it looks like a space ship coming in. look how the sky changes colors. you can almost see the hail and the shelf cliff it with. you can see how windy it is. the trees are really reacting there. you can even see some of the me mattis cloud that we were talking about. those are very unusual clouds for our region. usually a sign of severe storm and there are pouches of cold air that hang down from the storm system. so quite a now. now i'm happy to tell you that that super cell has blown itself out of town. you had previou

one, it dropped a lot of hail and now as it's pushed off into charles county it's just about out of energy, just a couple of sprinkles left. what is next for us? this is a frontal boundary and that system will be in here tomorrow and if the timing is right and it bumps into a lot of heat and humidity we could chase around a few more tomorrow afternoon some of which could be on the severe side. bottom line, friday, the bermuda high will be in place. the frontal boundary that i just showed you is going to come to the rescue and as the afternoon and evening goes on the cold front arrives by later in the day and that's when we'll start to pop some more showers and thunderstormment so keep it p in your plans. tonight we had a terrible outbreak of severe tornadoes across oklahoma. they had high risks for that. for us we had the slight risk but we did see the showers and storms and tomorrow it will be the marginal risk that we're going to be dealing with. we didn't
