idea of four stage races. he likes to know when the cautions will fall and he doesn't want a long run. secondly, he likes the car that he ran at the all-star race so he thought it would play to their strengths and it has tonight. larson goes to the inside of his teammate, matt. >> matt: look at the 42 tonight, jamie, you haven't seen a lot him running the wall like he does in the past. running more to the middle and bottom. he is middle right now. the big issue so far, though, has been exits, especially on turn two, just way too tight. >> darrell: i don't believe the traction compound has done what we thought it would do to the upper groove. >> mike: not at night. not a lot of heat. no sun. no ambient temperature heat, just what the tires are putting into it. so we have had good side by side racing, but maybe not as much as we had hoped for? >> darrell: but it is usable. that's a good thing. you can go up there and

cars, but it hasn't been a big advantage. >> jeff: i also think, it being on pavement, not on concrete, it definitely reacts differently. it doesn't have quite the same amount of grip advantage as it does on the concrete. just saw a big moment for kyle larson. drove down to the bottom of the track. saw the sparks fly off that splitter. he about turned that thing around. got it gathered back up. >> mike: logano and hamlin have renewed their battle from the last stage. this time it's for 12th place. as martin truex jr. continues to lead matt kenseth by 1.7 seconds.

were talking about the fact that kevin harvick was complaining about a loose wheel and the team was on the wall awaiting his arrival in the pits. harvick has not come in. he says the vibration has not gotten worse but it's definitely shaking him and he's looking forward to getting it taken care of. can you imagine the apprehension he must have if he feels like there could possibly be an issue with the left rear at 190-plus miles an hour just waiting on it to go wrong. >> darrell: one of the things that worries me about that, if it should be the wheel is not did -- nuts are night but the wheel isn't, it will wear the studs out and they'll never get it tight. >> jeff: you can tell he is a little apprehensive. he is not pushing the car to the limit like he was earlier. >> mike: the biggest mover since the restart, led by denny hamlin, up ten spots. you're riding with him. there he got a little bit impatient with david ragan.

we started when the track temp was pretty high. there was a point when denny hamlin had a problem on pit road, speeding. he almost went a lap down and now sixth position coming forward. >> darrell: there are some great runs going on back in the field. good cars in the hunt. suarez running in the 11th spot. see him coming into view right here. whoa! had to check up right there. he would have gotten into kurt busch. >> jeff: puts him in a vulnerable position. he lost some grip and went up the racetrack. it can suck you around. >> darrell: almost like it pulled suarez into him. >> mike: kevin harvick went past. remember, harvick was part of the last

behind suarez was dale earnhardt jr. chris. >> chris: a lot of work has gone into trying to find speed this weekend. on friday alex bowman, was running through more setups. talking to dale today. he said, we made progress yesterday but this -- during the break, the setup and the balance, just going back and forth. one run a little too tight, the next, a little bit too loose. looking for the sweet spot. >> matt: sometimes the track will draw you into overdriving. that's the issue daniel suarez was experiencing last weekend. the spotter told him he was over driving the entry into turn three. he couldn't get the car to the bottom. he worked on that in practice on thursday and saturday. he felt comfortable coming in where he was. >> mike: he is currently 11th. five seconds out of the lead. >> darrell: i like the progress

beginning of the year when the season started. he's become consistently better. >> jeff: that's something you see a lot of young drivers coming from the xfinity series. the cars have less power, more downforce. you can drive deeply into the corner. you have to train yourselves and the crew chiefs have to work with the drivers to show them you have to back off much earlier in the cup cars. >> darrell: the aero package with the rear spoiler. these cars hit over 200 miles an hour down the straightaways. you have to back off the gas or you'll bail into the corner and no way you can make it. >> mike: great job by some of the rookies like suarez, erik jones tonight. here is denny hamlin. just in front of jones and behind jamie mcmurray. sixth place and coming toward the front, jamie. >> jamie: you look at denny hamlin. he only has one top five finish this year. they desperately want to get him the top five.

he told me this morning they're bold. the first three stages of the race focus on the equipment. we know we have decent speed and go for it the last 100. they gained three spots on the last stop. >> mike: he has picked it up. as he closes in behind -- erik jones, comes of age this week. he turns 21 before we get to dover next sunday. >> darrell: that's amazing. he drives like a veteran. a great head on his shoulders. he does a nice job in that car. >> mike: pretty impressive he is a cup rookie but a 14-year racing veteran. started in quarter midgets in his native michigan. for all the drivers running their first career coca-cola 600, he is at the top of that list in seventh place. martin truex jr., .8 seconds ahead of jimmie johnson.

him out of the way. >> jeff: kyle busch gets really loose right there under david ragan coming off turn two. shows you how his car is rolling through the center. i believe his car is one of the best cars -- talking about kyle busch -- on the longer runs. if he can get up there to martin truex jr. i think he's the only one throughout this race that's really had anything for martin truex. >> mike: at the time of the pass kyle busch is 2.9 seconds behind martin truex jr. we'll see how it develops over the next 15 laps. at the end of stage three. >> darrell: i think martin truex jr. is minding the gap. i don't think he is driving hard. i think he is running very -- now this cat, on the other hand, he doesn't know any other way. talking about kyle busch. i think martin is kind of happy where he is, taking care of his stuff, putting down decent laps.

>> chris: mike, was starting to be a good run. had more security on the back end of the car. five laps ago he told the team he had a vibration. a lap later he said i think i have a tire rub. the team told him, hey, 12 laps to go. see if you can ride it out. >> jeff: never comforting when you have a vibration. you read the vibrations by whether they get worse. if it stays the same, even though you don't like it, you deal with it. if it continues to get worse, you have no choice but to bring it in. >> mike: tough week for the crew chief, greg ives. lost his mom this week. racing with heavy hearts is the whole 88 team. >> darrell: guys, we are only about ten laps away from the end of this stage.
