intelligence committee looking into claims the kremlin meddled in the us presidential election. lawmakers say they hope comey's testimony will also answer questions that have come up since his sudden firing. >> six hours after making a major announcement about climate change the trump administration switched gears going after another controversial pop tick talking about the travel ban. >> that's right. late night filing the white house asked the supreme court to hear an emergency appeal to get the beanery sainted. fox5's mel know alnwick is live outside the white house this morning with a look at how fast this could happen. good morning, mel. >> reporter: good morning, guys much what's really interesting about this, the white house is asking the supreme court to immediately reinstate that travel ban from six muslim majority countries and then argue about whether it's constitutional or not at a later point. could be months down the road. now, in its petition, to the us supreme core justice department lawyers said the court that

arguing the president has the power to restrict immigration and prior statements trump made are irrelevant. the filing also says the us will be safer if the ban is in place. it will take majority of court five justices to put the controversial policy into effect. the executive order in january restricting travelers from iran, libya, somalia, sudan, syria and yemen caught many off guard and sparked nationwide protests. though the order was revised in march federal judge still blocked it finding it was quote rooted in religious animus and cited national security concerns were an after the fact justification. higher court agreed with that ruling just last week so that's two losses on the argument so far. the administration also wants to be able to suspend the refugee program for 120 days. that was blocked by a different federal judge. now, in the court decides to take up the position, that's question number one. question number two if the court rules in favor of the trump

stopped by eagle cad mow public charter school about 30 minutes ago to meet with teachers and is it a of there about the department's newly launched dissables education act. >> more now on a fox5 exclusive. we have been on top of prince george's county schools for months now. first keeping track of the sky rocketing number of teachers and staff on leave. as they go through the investigation process for claims of abuse or misconduct. >> now since then we've learned the school district is spending millions of dollars just to keep staffs on leave. fox5's bob barnard with this one for us this morning live from upper marl bow with all the details. hey, bob. >> reporter: hey, annie. we've let you know that there are about 800 current prince george's county school staff members these are teachers, bus drivers, other employees, who have been on leave at some point during this particular school year. so 800 of those on leave. what we're telling you now is that the cost to this school district is $10 million. $10 million to pay these people not to work. compare that to roughly

in the school year two years ago. so 600,002 years ago. 10 million this year. this is all fall out from a deonte car away case from last school year. as a matter of fact. i want to show you video tape sent to us yesterday. this one someone record this on this phone. some of the shots you'll see are some of the bus drivers who are on paid administrative leave. they must report to the schoolbus depot even though they're not driving. teachers if they're on paid leave are a loud to stay home. one of the drivers that fox5 news spoke to last night said he's actually been cleared as many these cases end up being cleared but that his paper work has been misplaced and he's still not driving. we had edward burroughs one of the school board members on our newscast earlier this morning. he says all this is affecting moral and students are caught in the mill. >> essentially we're paying individuals to stay home. you saw -- you covered yesterday that we were paying bus drivers to sit in the bus lot and play

shortage and we have a teacher shortage. the real number in this are the tens of thousands of students that did he do not have a quality educator in front of them this school year, and that's a year they will never get back. >> reporter: now, in a statement to fox5 news, the school district says this. "in recent years prince george's county public schools has increased our focus on pro protecting every child. the number of employees on administrative leave is substantially hire heightened emphasis on mandatory reporting of suspected child abuse and neglect. correspondiningly, administratie leave pay has increased. pgpcs is legally required to pay these salaries, however, our institute business costs are lower and. what they mean having to pay the substitute bus drivers and teachers doesn't cost as much but according to mr. burroughs is still costing millions of dollars to this school district. he says there's been a mass exodus of the best employees because of the new

>> your story is so compelling. how does one go from the nfl to space? >> you know, foundational until my parents told me i can do anything. i think i can and i think i can. and curious george. curiosity led me to do all these different things. no one ever told me i couldn't. >> when you were playing football was being an astronaut something that was always in your mind? did it take that injury to really say now i'll pursue this. >> it wasn't i got to nasa that this gentleman said, you'd be a great astronaut handed me an plick. i look at it. didn't fill it out. another friend of my got into the core. wait a minute, nasa letting knuckle heads be astronauts. i applied after that and i got in. >> you make it seem so easy we know it's not to become an astronaut to need life lessons and study and work hard that's what you're trying to tell kids now it's very important to do the basics we heard about stem. you're saying steam. >> right. includes everyone at the table in education if you want to be creative or innovative we build, you know, rocket ships and space stations, there's creative side to it so

all included in the mix. >> what's the reaction when you talk about your trajectory how do kids receive this. >> they receive it very well most kids want to be football player when i get in the room, i have the instant, they listen i got injured. my education to fall back on. they said okay, we can have to do this now too. >> i'm curious. what is it like being out in space? >> the most beautiful you go around the planet every 90 minutes see sunrise and sunset every 45 when you look at the caribbean the colors of the water it's almost like you need 20 different shades of blue to describe the caribbean. >> wow. >> as your indigo, greens and just incredible. >> we're looking at pictures of your childhood from you in the football field with your parents. you in action. all of it it's just, you know, we talk about your lifetime and how it takes twists and turns. and you are prime example of that. you've written this book now. what do you hope to accomplish with the booing. >> i want, you know, think about

and i think the people that aren't known about their accomplishments letting women in and minorities know they can be or do anything they put their mind too just like catherine johnson i almost went to jail when i was in high school. accident. hearing in a training- i've had all these moments i had second chances to even find space. >> wow. second chances i think that's important to point out that you can have second chance and do you care this. i wanted to ask you about this jacket you're wearing, because there's something very unique and special about it. 501c3 non-profit source. we provide food assistance to all qualifying residents of prince george's county. we also have an emergency aid fund for residents of the city of bowie to help them with the utility bill or a mortgage payment, month of rent, prescription medications, primarily we are a food pantry. we distribute dry canned goods and bread and dessert items donated from local toilet paper, last year we distributed 9,373 bags of food. >> wow. >> we registered 263 new households last year. >> man. what's so amazing about this hometown hero when we always go and highlight communities we always ask who is a person that really stands out in the community that is making a difference and here in bowie they didn't want do just do a person. they wanted to do the pantry and the aid fund as an entity. >> yes. >> it is an aze

people. there are 117 volunteers at the bowie food pantry. >> and last year they clocked 9,157 hours. truly an amazing group of caring compassionate people. no matter what they do, whether they're sorting the items, shelfing items, packing the bags, going out to the local stores and picking up items, picking up donations doing our paper work whatever it is. they do it with a great deal of care and love and compassion. >> i'm honored and privileged to work with them. >> now with all the people that are in need because you said you delivered so many to so many people, how does a family, how does a person who is in need get in ton exact toy you. is there a certain protocol they have to go through to get to work how does that work? >> they can just come by. we are -- >> it's that simple. >> we do nat take appointments. we're open monday, wednesday, friday mornings. 9:00 to 12:00. and then we have two nights a month we're the

fourth tuesday night it's from six torsel 7:00 really just walk in. i meet with every now person that comes in talk to them. see what their needs might be. often if they're in need of food they may need some other resources too. so we try to help them out that way as well. point them in the right direction. and then they do fill out some paper work. and they come to us either once or twice a month. >> the flip side of that is if there's somebody that's watching that lives in the bowie area and you need assistance what do they need to do? >> just come on by. >> i'm sorry the flip side if someone is watching then want to help this organization because you have a lot of givers but there's also -- you can always have more, right. >> absolutely. the community here in bowie is a fabulous community. we really are community run and all our donations come from the community. the schools, the businesses, individual families, um, the city of bowie, boy scott troops, girl scout troops it's a true community evident if people want to help out they can pop by the

young age stay away -- stay away from certain thing. certain child stars are able to, you know, get passed that. did you have advice from somebody who said stay away there these avenues these people? >> you learn from the mistakes of others and have those sayings you grow up. more so we grew up times were change. youtube and the internet and everything else you couldn't hide from anything. the cameras and the up loads and instagrams and twitter it's everywhere. so any kind of little faux pas gets pronounced ten times. >> magnified. >> really. people especially child stars of today i would tell them remember you're living like a gold fish in a bowl. people are looking at from you all sides. so that's something they have to remember we didn't have to worry about so much in 1980. >> you have the nasty glare on you, though, with some issues you faced you doing what you're doing now. talk about your current state what you're doing beyond what brings to you d.c. >> gosh, i mean aside there tis i'm doing stand up. touring 19 years i've been doing stan um 47 weeks of the year. been to 13 countries. look i said 47 weeks out of t
