at about quarter to 11 last nights that's when police got a call for the sound of gunshots on this street. the 17 year old nature disir was in the driver's seat and the 18 year old was in the passenger seat. the man who lives in this house looked outside after the shooting and he said he could see the interior light of the car on. at this hour montgomery county police are not saying what the motive might be in this case, in fact, they're not saying whether or not these two may have been targeted or if it was even random. the first call came at a 911 at ten:46 p.m. for the sound of gunshots on gallery court. gun shots less than five minutes ago. he doesn't know what kind of gun. >> five minutes later, the first arriving officer found a honda with a motor

headlights on. two people down, blood, gunshot wounds to the head. no pulse on either subject. q. this man who lives in the house where the honda was parked, heard the shots. we pecked through the window and we noticed the lights were on and then the rear side window was shattered. >> just up the street gordon giep says he heard the shots as well, but thought it was fireworks. when he looked out the window he says he saw nothing. an hour later a disk came by at 1 a.m. and he had me go back towards where i could see the vehicle and said have you seen this vehicle on the street before and i said no, i haven't. he discovered that one of his surveillance cameras captured the sound of gunshots and a car leaving the

that's quite sad for young men to lose their life that way. now that recording indicates there may be as many as 22 or 23 shots that were fired. it sounds like there's some overlap in the gunfire, possibly that there were two different guns that may have been used. now i spoke with the 18 year old's stepfather earlier today. did not want to go on camera. i asked him if he knew why his stepson might have been in this neighborhood last night. of course the night before his graduation. he said he had no idea why he was over here miles away from where they live. now, earlier today at around three:30 this afternoon, the fox5 photographer came here to the scene to help out with our life shot and actually found two more shell casings here in the grass this one being

phone. you can't -- actually you can see the shell casing right there in the grass. the other one is just up here to the right where you can see a flashlight there in the grass marking the second one. and then here is a montgomery county crime seen technician using a metal detector to see if he can find any further shell casings on the scene. that's what we know at this hour. troubling case. no motive. no arrest at this point. at this point, also as you know in that recording that we played for you there was a sound of a car driving away. there's no description of a get away car as well. paul wagner, fox5 local news. >> both of the victims were set to graduate to graduate from northwest high school. they were ad at graduation practice. he told them they he were going to sell graduation tickets. he said that was the last time he heard from

obviously a very sad for a lot of people who know these boys. i just talked to the principal a few minutes ago and he said it's hard to make sense of this tragedy. it just wrapped up at about a half hour ago. a very large graduation ceremony. this was streemed, the entire ceremony. this has been a day that so many students have been looking forward. it began as most graduation do, parents brought flowers and balloons. there was a sadness many were experiencing. the ceremony began with a moment of silence for the two graduates who died overnight as well as another student lost earlier in the year. while we are here today to celebrate this mow meant us time in the lives of our graduates and their families, we have heavy hearts given the recent loss yesterday evening of two of our seniors. all right. outside

today we had a chance to speak with some of the students. i want you to hear from them as well. it's something that was unexpected, really. but all we could do is pray, pray that this world gets better. it happened out of nowhere. they were good people. i knew one of them. the other one i didn't know too well. i knew one of them slightly and he wasn't a bad guy at all. it's very sad that he's not going to walk across the stage with us today. the principal said he's known them for five years since they were in middle school. he described them personable and excellent students. he told us he will deliver their diplomas to their families personally later in the week. live in d.c., matt ackland, fox5 local news. >> we have some knew surveillance video showing two burglars inside a home in the district. police are immediatinging your help to identify these guys.

entered a home on perry place back on may 22. one of the men heads upstairs where the other takeses a few items from the living room before they both take off running. if you recognize them please call police. the drug enforcement agency has issued a warning responding to overdose. the issue is fentanyl, 50 times more deadly and increasingly showing up on the clothes of police, emts ar firefighters who are trying to save those lies. tom fitzgerald is live at ea in virginia. this is more serious than we thought. >>reporter: it really is. we've known for years that fentanyl its deadly. now that fatal possibility is extending to the first responders who were in charge of saving these lives keep in mind opioid deaths are killing pep not only in d.c., but in maryland and virginia as well. nationwide how bad is this problem? try 33,000 people

in one year's time that have died from overdoses on this stuff. now, here at the dea today, the acting director could not have been more blunt to police, fire, emts about this. he said flat out, don't touch this stuff. the acting attorney general of the united states, a man with his hands full right now, recognizing the severity of this problem came here today and went even further. he sayses this is a clear and present dangerment his words to the united states and tonight he is warning law enforcement that they need to be careful. the spread of opioids brings a growing risk to our first responders. fentanyl is especially dangerous. fentanyl is 30 to 50 times more deadly than heroin. just two milligrams, the equivalent of a few grains of salt, an amount that can fit on the tip of your finger can be lethal. so let's talk about what

fentanyl, folks, is a synthetic form of heroin. why would you want a synthetic form of heroin well, you don't. at least the drug addicts don't t know that but the drug dealers find a cheap way to put the purity of their product at a low cost not caring about the consequences. they are cutting fentanyl into heroin, into cocaine and then putting that out onto the street. many time the drug addicts who buy this stuff have no idea they are essentially killing themselves nearly instantly. the concern now for first responders is this, as little as you heard the attorney general, the assist and the attorney general say, this is about a dab of salt that can be dangerous, fatal even. if this gets on an officer, it can also trigger an overdose in that individual and put their life in

the country. you heard about a case recently in ohio, there have been cases in new jersey and here in our aryks the loudon county sheriff mike chap man he'll tell you flat out, personnel who are in this line of work, they want to save lives. what they don't want to do is something that could jep skies their own. this is different in the sense that now we have concern about our own health and safeties as we role up on a scene where it used to be where we came across drugs we could do a simple field test and we can find out what it is. now we can't do that that. we have to make sure that we secure the substance very, very carefully. of course the big question here at the dea tonight, what are you doing about this? what are you doing to safeguard these police officers, these law enforcement officials, these firefighters and first responders that you are issuing this concern about tonight? the answers we got back were not exactly

>> we got could new information about that attack on a police officer in front of a popular tourist attracts. a man attacked an officer guarding note raised tonight damn cathedral with a hammer and said this is for syria. no word on the officer's condition. he was carrying a hammer, kitchen knives and documents that he may be an al just so we're clear and student. >> day two of billion cosby's assault trial got underway today. cosby accused of drugging and secretariesly assaulting a woman more than a decade day ago. his accuser took the stand. she says cosby groped her at his home in philadelphia back in 2004. he gave her three blue pills that he claimed took the edge off and ease her stress about the upcoming career change. she described herself as being

job you need to take it off. if you don't take it off then you're going to get sent home. i was like i'm not taking it off. i'm fasting and it's my religion, i'm not taking it off i thought that even if i had it on file, they would -- i wouldn't have to carry it around. they said you have to have it with you in order for you to wear it. >> the school administrations has posted apology. they are denouncing the administrator's actionses. we did reach out to freedom high school to these specific accusations, at that time a spokesperson refused to comment saying they were will not respond point by point on the situation. after our story aired they decided to weigh in. sweeping changes could be coming to prince george's county public schools. this is a situation that makes us say maybe we need to do additional training at the staff level, the administrator

those are things we look at because again the commitment here is making sure that everybody feels welcome, everyone fells included and we are living up to the high standards we've set for ourselves. that sensitivity training will come after year old 18 year old came forward saying their principal and assistant principal harassed them because they wore that jobs making the girls state prove for hazer the head coverings. they are still investigating specific claims, but made it very clear freed oom high school's administration was wrong. notes are not required to wear hijobs we're told the administration involved did have meetings about the school's top brass about the situation. any disciplinary action as a result from those meetings we're due to confidentiality policies they would not give us that information. now so the district swiftly apologized to the girl's

denounced freedom high school's actionses. our code of behavior makes it abend and thely clear that someone wear wear if that is in accordance with their religious beliefs. in this case something happened that just got off line. we want to reiterate that we are welcoming everybody we expect everybody to have religious freedom and that's the way it's going to be going forward. i want a social on soaghts immediate h this why. why the name freedom high school when you can't have the freedom to practice your beliefs. somewhere there is a disconnect kevin murphy wrote if this is permitted they need to let christian students be able to read the bible and talk about god. school administrators should be fired. this is northern virginia, a very diverse area. i'm not buying the we didn't realize plea, they purposely targeted these girls because of their religion.

>> h this is fox5 local news at five. five:30 on the nose, top stories right now, howard county police charging a man and woman with human trafficking a minor. investigators say andre russel el and heather harding were forcing a 16 year old girl into prostitution. that victim had been reported as a runaway. detectives arrested the pair last thursday after getting a tip. harding's picture was not release for investigative reasons. an oxon hill man arrested and charged with a series of indecent exposure on the metro. louie smith has done this on both trains and buses. the most recent case happened yesterday on a yesterday. a second incident happened

line train. the victim in that case was able to capture the whole thing on cellphone video. a prince george's county sky fox after a suspect was running from a home burglary. he prompted a barricade situation. officers were out there trying to negotiate for about two hours before the suspect piecefully surrounded. there was a warrant out for his arrest. >> there have been some events, but other things over shadowing the white house the white house declared this infrastructure week. you may have missed the headlines. fox5's political reporter ronica cleary is live outside our studios in northwest with more on how some democrats would like to work with the president on this issue. the tweets have really not stopped since saturday night, that terror attack in london and it really started with tweets about that and it continued to be on a variety of

speak straight to the american people which has proved to be a very effective tool. the same people who are kri tegging his use of it now ceo techeddedded him during the election. there has been a lot focus on what the white house is calling infrastructure week. it's an effort to fulfill a campaign promise that the democrats responded to saying that they would be willing to compromise and work with president trump on. it all started yesterday in the east room wet president announced efforts to privatize air traffic control jobs. today in the white house they talked about the fact that they want to create this public private sector partnership to create jobs all while building roads and bridges. so i spoke with senator chris van holland, a democrat to say is this something that gives you hope? are you willing and eager to work with the president based on what you've seen this week

appropriations subcommittee today. she testified on president trump's controversial budget propose l al forth department of education. that would cut 9 billion-dollar in education spending. it was a pretty heated hearing with a harsh panel. take a listen. this is a difficult budget request to defense. secretary devos, as you know, i was very clear during your confirmation process that i had serious concerns with your extreme education secretary logical commitment to prief tieing our public schools, your extensive financial conflicts of interest and your lack of understanding of the role of the federal government in protect the civil rights of students across the country. the budge proposal forth department of education can be summed up very quickly in one word, business mol. and after you promised not to do this in your confirmation when you were asked about it explicitly by senator cas disi this budget does exactly that. now in addition tho
