good evening. there was no bombshell. there was no smoking gun. still the while, this was historic today. it's the first time we've heard jim comey under oath answering questions about his firing by president trump as the fbi director. throughout this testimony comey several conversations he had with president trump which were odd and awkward repeating the president's desire to have the fbi wrap up its investigation of russian interference in the 2016 election. now, we have broken this downton night into five key moments for you. we're going begin with jim comey's anger. anger over president trump's description of why he fired comey in the president's words because of disarray and bad morale at the fbi. comey today saying the president and his staffers repeated that talking points were in his words liars. >> those were lies plain and simple. and i am so sorry that

workforce had to hear them and i'm so sorry that the american people were told them. >> reporter: now from there the chairman of this committee intelligence committee, wanted to know if president trump ever directly asked jim comey to stop the fbi investigation. comey's answer was no. >> did the president at any time ask you to stop the fbi investigation into russian involvement in the 2016 u.s. elections. >> not to my understanding, no. >> did any individual working for this administration including the justice department ask you to stop the russian investigation? >> no. >> reporter: now, why did jim comey start taking secret notes of these meetings? under oath today comey testified that he became suspicious, that some of the conversations he was having with the president would not

be relayed accurately and in comey's own words that the president would not tell the truth or be honest about what they discussed. that question put to the former fbi director today. >> i was honestly concerned that he might lie about the nature of our meeting so i thought it really important to document. that combination of things i never experienced before but led me to believe i got to write it down. >> reporter: w but was comey's job ever directly threatened? the former director said he began to have a series of meetings that the president kept asking him som if he wanted to stay on the job. comey said he began to get the impression that ending the russia probe would be a condition for him to continue as fbi director. >> my common sense i could be wrong but my common sense told me what's going on here is that he's looking to get something in exchange for granting my request to stay in the

there was the phrase that we have now been telling you about, i hope you can let this go. apparently this was a conversation between the president and jim comey where the president asked comey if the fbi could let this go meaning the investigation into the former nsa adviser michael flynn. now, what did the president mean by that? well, according to jim comey today, he said he took that to mean that the president wanted this investigation to wrap up. >> i took it as a direction. as the president of the united states with me alone saying i hope this, i took this as this is what he wants me to do. i didn't obey that but that's the way i took it. >> reporter: now of course this testimony today out in the open was public. there was a lot that was discussed behind closed doors today after this open hearing. the senate intelligence committee went into a classified session to discuss matters of national

tonight, tom fitzgerald, fox5 local news. >> a warning about a deadly danger that happens when the weather warms up. police say wednesday afternoon a three-year-old boy was killed after he fell out of an upstairs window at a home in fairfax county. >> now this is something that happens thousands of times every year not always fatal but often causing serious injuries. fox5's christian leon in bethesda tonight with some advice for parents. >> reporter: good evening, that's right and it's important to keep in mind here that these types of tragedies don't just happen at apartments but in this case it could also happen at a home. now, right now we are here at strow snyder's where we're going over some of the products they sell to prevent accidents like this one here but before i get into describe wag a security guard or a safety guard does i want to go into detail about what happened yesterday afternoon at that home in fairfax county. now, police say yesterday a little boy,

boy was in an upstairs room playing near a window with a screen. he was playing near that window and that's when they say he leaned up against the screen, the screen buckled and he fell from that window. now, he was then taken to the hospital where he later died and covering to the u.s. consumer products safety commission, about nine children, nine children die each year from falling out of a window and around 4200 children are injured from these types of accidents. now, we sat down with them and spoke with them today and demonstrated how these types of security guards, how these types of safety guards work in this case. and here's what they showed u us. >> this is a window guard. you put it on your window secure it into place and that keeps your child from falling out. because you can see it would be covering where the screen would be opened. this is secured to the sides of the window and so there's no chance that your child can fall out of if you have

>> reporter: now, they also say here i do want to emphasize it's important to keep in mind that a screen in this case will not protect your child from falling out of the window. it will keep bugs out but it will not support the weight of that child. again, wanting to go over some of these products that they sell here at the hardware store that you can purchase over the counter like that window guard, there are three different types of window guards here depending on the size and how wide your window is. you can purchase these, again, to protect your child from falling out of the win dover. another option that you can do if you don't want to purchase these products, they're relatively not too expensive, you can also purchase these window stoppers here. there are two different types and what these window stoppers do essentially is it allows you to open your window a certain amount so that your child in this case will not fall out of that window. also, if you have a double hung window in this case, if your home or apartment has that

metro's leaders say with so many workers on the tracks they can't bring back automatic train apparition just yet. the fear that a operator would fail to take his train out of automatic and kill or injure one of those inspectors. remember, this system was meant for automatic operation. trains are smoother, more efficient. it's easier on the equipment. it's better for the entire system but that won't happen now for at least several more years. >> and one more thing. you know, we were talking about the forecast coming up this weekend and i mean, what, 97 degrees, going to be really hot. if you've been down to dupont or farragut north lately you know it is really warm down there. so, we got some good news, right? >> that's right. >> good news for metro commuters these days. the chillers, it's not air conditioning, the chilled air there's a temporary fix coming by the end of the month according to metro at those two stations, dupont circle and farragut north.

money then shot the man several times. he faces malicious wounding and gun charges. he's set to be sentenced in september and could face life in prison. >> overturned dump truck caused major delays. skyfox over the scene this morning as the accident happened around 8:00 a.m. on billingsly road in waldorf. the road was shut down between sweet corn place and leonardtown road for several hours. no one was hurt but the cause of the accident is still under investigation. >> and a federal jury convicted an alexandria man of providing material support to isis. court records show mohammed jamaal khweis moved to syria in late 2015 using encrypted devices and secure messaging apps to communicate with isis facilitators. he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. >> ♪ there is new information in the circumstances surrounding the death back in january of a northeast man. the 66-year-old discovered dead inside of his queen street apartment one day after telling police drug dealers had taken over his apartment. >> now,

of investigating the medical examiner says the man was murdered. fox5's paul wagner has been following this case since the very beginning and joins us now with the story. hey, paul. >> reporter: jim and sarah, the medical examiner says he died from blunt force trauma. along with a combination of smoke and soot inhalation. his body discovered on january 26th under a pile of rubble inside his second floor apartment. the 66-year-old had been assaulted the night before the fire and man was arrested but at this hour d.c. police say no one has been charged with the murder. the circumstances behind the death are chilling. according to his landlord, the two had gone to see d.c. police the night before the fire in order to file a complaint. he says drug dealers had taken over his apartment and he wanted them out. that was on the 25th. but before police could act he was assaulted outside of his apartment later that night and his body discovered underneath the rubble the next morning. a note wri

said, you going down. man identified asghar rhett taylor was initially charged in the assault. a charge that was later dropped and replaced with a charge of robbery. he was held for a few months before being released on high intensity supervision. now, fire investigators initially said the fire was intentionally set but it took all this time to come to a conclusion the the man was murdered. fox5 has been unable to reach his family. a friend says he was originally from ethiopia and had been homeless for a time before finding the apartment on queen street. paul wagner, fox5 local news. >> ♪ >> turning back to capitol hill tonight now in his first appearance since being fired, former fbi director james comey testified under oath today. the president president trump himself was not under investigation in the russia election probe

with the investigation still under way. fox5's tom fitzgerald on capitol hill tonight where the reaction continues to pour in. >> reporter: good evening, jim, good evening, sarah. yeah, this is falling mainly along party lines. e-mail boxes across the city have been flooded with statements since this testimony wrapped up publically a few hours ago. generally it's breaking down like this. many democrats calling today's testimony disturbing, some even speaking about obstruction of justice. on the republican side, a different take. many highlighting the fact that comey said several times today that president trump himself was not the personal subject of the fbi investigation and also blasting comey for admitting that he had leaked his own memos of meetings with the president to an associate he knew at columbia university in new york. now, the chairman and the vice chairman of the senate intelligence committee that ran this hearing today, that would be republican richard burr and virginia d

they stepped out to the microphones after all of this was over, both of them playing this very close to the vest. >> today's hearing was an important part of our investigation, the committee's investigation into russian involvement in the 2016 elections. it also enabled the american people to understand the massive amounts of stories that's been out there. >> one message that i hope all americans will take home is recognizing how significant the russian interference in our electoral process was, how it goes to the core of our democracy and that we've got to be prepared to make sure that we're in a better defensive position. >> reporter: now, the job of responding for the president of the united states today was left up to donald trump's own personal attorney. he appeared that the national press club downtown today after this hein

he repeated the fact that comey said that trump was not the target of this investigation and also reiterated the claim yesterday that comey's prepared statement fully exonerated the president. >> it is now established that the president was not being investigated for colluding with or attempting to obstruct any investigation. as to the committee pointing out to today, these important facts for the country to know are virtually the only facts that have not been leaked during the course of these events. >> reporter: now, it's important to point out in all of this that what you saw today was a fraction of the investigation into probes that are going on into the russia election investigation. there are at least four congressional committes looking into this. you also have the fbi and now the special counsel robert mueller. comey said under oath today that it is

weather headlines enjoy this beautiful evening and it will be a cool and comfortable night because the air is so very dry over our region. we're going to see our temperatures heading back down into the 50's tonight so you can get those windows opened and be very careful with them, of course, around our region but warmer temperatures are back tomorrow. we were in the 70's today. upper 60's yesterday. we're going to be up and over 80 degrees tomorrow. so, that's more typical of what we typically see here in june, early june in d.c. the heat wave begins sunday. that's when we start pumping up the temperatures, the humidity might hold off a little bit more but it certainly will not be denied and the heat wave will that continue through at least wednesday of next week and hopefully it breaks a little bit by then so let me show you some of the temperatures that we're expecting with our heat wave. not so bad tomorrow at 83 degrees but saturday we're up to 89. sunday we pop right up to 94 degrees and then look at this. 96 on monday. 96 tuesday. 95 wednesday. you combine

humidity and these will be three humid days. it's going to feel like we're in the triple digits over a hundred degrees with normal being 82 to 84, you want to be ready for that and it often does take people by surprise when it's so stifling like that. meantime look at these temperatures. 74 degrees, nice to get a break before it comes on in and nice to have some notice that it's going to be getting so terribly hot. 75 frederick, 74 martinsburg, 73 in winchester. you can see a little bit of the beginning of the heat with chicago, saint louis at 82 degrees but certainly our cool pocket across the northeast aren't the midatlantic continues tonight. beckley west virginia down to 59 degrees. so, quick check of temperatures locally and you can see that we're at 74 in the district t-68 for leonardtown that air so very dry which is one of the reasons why tonight is so incredibly pleasant. typical dewpoint for june might be 60 degrees. we're in the 40's. that means we'll get nice and cool tonight. visible satellite picture taking the clouds finally away from the breaches

our puffy clouds are going to be dissipating. showers that we've been watching out on the other side of the mountains likely stay out there. might get a little bit closer to roanoke and this system off the coast is also moving away. so, our surface -- there's that low that has been tracking some showers across the coastal areas. high pressure, though, is going to continue to slip away as that low does as well. we're still pleasant tomorrow with temperatures again near 80 degrees. a little bit above it and as high pressure continues to slip on down to the south, that's the beginning of things getting heated up around here. seasonal temperatures tomorrow. then the high pressure gets off the coast and that's why we're going to see things getting into the bermuda high position which gets us up and over 90 degrees. futurecast doesn't really see much for us. maybe a few more clouds in the morning tomorrow but not much. it looks like it's going to be a nice dry day and a comfortable day at that. your planner for your friday looks like temperatures at 8:00 in the morning will be about 63 degrees. could still be 50 in the suburbs at 8 o'clock. by n

5 o'clock, comfortable, warm, 83 degrees. so, that will be our high for the day. you can see most places will be either in the upper 70's to near 80 and low 80's one of the exceptions here in d.c. but then we're right back into the upper 80's on saturday as our high pressure gets off the coast. that's when we really see things heating up especially on sunday as we head for the 90's. so, here's your weekend forecast in detail. sunday's the hotter day. good beach day, that's for sure. that's when we consider that day one of the heat wave and we're certainly getting warm on saturday, too. the temperature will be 89. notice we're not worried about any storms as we look at the weekend forecast. at the beaches this weekend, water temperature up a little bit to 65. partly cloudy on saturday, 82. sunday 86. so, little bit of heat relief there at ocean city if you need it. we wrap it up with your fox5 accuweather 7-day forecast. so, here we go. sunday 94. we showed you these temperatures. 96 on tuesday. monday hottest days of our heat wave. we hope it will break a little
