we will -- i want to thank the alexandria police, the sheriff's office and the alexandria fire department for their rapid response to the requests for assistance in 911 call. appreciate their rapid response and certainly saved lives. >> was there one shooter. >> at this point we're going to gather the investigators together and look at what we have and put this incident together, again, it's very early on and there's a lot of witnesses to be interviewed. once we have more information, we'll certainly pass on whatever information we can to make sure that you have the information you need. >> chief, was any of your officers injured. >> i'll turn it back over to the alexandria chief. >> thank you chief. >> can you tell us what the status,/worry not going to answer any questions at this point. as the chief pointed out this is an active on hoy going investigation. we

because they're collecting information and evidence. it would be be premature. we'll come back in an hour and a half and give you an update on what we can speak to and perhaps answer any questions. >> any other shooters out there. >> this is a stable situation at that is point. there's no additional threat. we consider this incident to be a closed incident under investigation. >> thack thank you very much the. >> suspect is in custody? >> that was chief brown talking there of alexandria police department a statement from chief villa rosa. they made statements as you can see her septembering no questions as very early on in this investigation. but a couple things they did confirm. he did just say we consider this a stable situation eighths closed incident and an active investigation. so one would assume obviously there's no more of a threat of anything else happening following what has already happened this morning. he did also confirm that five people were transported from the scene and that obviously coordinates and goes along with what senator jeff flake of

the harrowing account of how it all went down this morning. we know that senator or that congressman scalise was among those that was injured. two capitol hill police officers representative staff from representative roger williams' office he's representative from texas and then also a guy who goes out there and helps senator flake referenced that he work for tyson. that he was the fifth person that was shot in the chest. they are going to give another update they said about an hour and a half from now obviously at about 10:30 this morning. and we'll await those details. >> you know, um, already you can see this thing becoming nasty as far as politics go on social media. and i am encouraged by that picture with the democrats there huddled in all in prayer for their fellow lawmakers and i would hope on this day you see people for what they are, which is fellow
9:03 am
extreme state of tragedy here. this heightened chaos just shots rinking out just moments after 7:00 o'clock in the morning. >> and the fact of the matter is, they were out there practicing for one of the few bipartisan traditions that goes on in our area every year and has for decades now. the congressional baseball game. you heard senator flake talk about it. it's something that's been going on it's a tradition many look forward to. it's a big deal. it was going to be played at nats park tomorrow. 10,000 possible come out. they were hoping to raise some $650,000 for charity for under privileged children right here in the district of columbia. so to see it get politicized now via social media is most certainly diss heart dering but we don't know why this person did this. there's lots of questions that need to be answered concerning the horrific events that went down this morning at a simple baseball practice. >> we can say
9:04 am
congressmen who was out there earlier representative dee santos from florida himself a republican described a strange incident just moments before this -- gunshots rang out. he says i'm quote hearing this is from fox news and these are the words of republican dee santos from florida. said, that he had a very strange encounter with someone shorely before representative scalise was shot and the man basically said that he had asked or it said a guy walk up and asked whether it was republicans or democrats out there. just letting you all the information that's coming in because there was speculation or whether these players were targeted whether the gunman new in fact who they were. >> and senator flake said there were about 25 members all republican there that were out taking practice this morning. fondle practice before the game tomorrow night. bob is still on the scene there. and bob, you know, it's h
9:05 am
follow the harrowing account that senator flake gave us live on tv, but what are you sensing and feeling now? >> reporter: >> as soon as he was done speaking a number of the ball players went that way basically heading east with detectives. he went past us this way so clearly investigators are debriefing the members who were here. i want to pan off and show you something here in the parking lot over there which is in about the location where the senator said the gunman was firing from at the end, you see two officers with guns drawn standing over some clothing in the parking lot there. so we believe that is the clothing that the gunman was wearing and it may look bloody we want to be a little careful there. but, you know, it's hard to describe what i'm seeing from this distance other than just generally speaking that it's clothing. if any any way it would describe how this person woodreeve. but we believe they are standing

evidence which is the clothing that the gunman was wearing i do want to play for you a clip from the inter vow we brought you live here on fox5 with republican senator jeff flake of arizona who was here, who was on the ball field, who saw the shots, saw the gunman, ran for his life, and tells us what happened here this morning at simpson park in the del ray section of alexandria. here he is. >> -- was standing near joe barton watching some of the batting practice and all of a sudden we heard a shot, very loud shot everybody thought sounded like a gun and then boom, rapid succession after that. he had a rival of some type. and it was obviously a large gauge rifle. and, um, there were people in the field. one staff was shot out in the feel. and he ran with a wound to the dug out. a lot of us dove into the

out and tried to get as many as we could. but then at that point, there was firing behind us from the security detail the capitol police, and i started yelling back, are you friendly? are you friendly? making sure that was our guy. we didn't know if there were other shoots that had us surrounded and would come into the dug out. so we didn't know whether to run or not. but as soon as we found out we had friendly behind us, then we stayed and tried to keep down. i poke my head up at one point zahn the shooter behind the back stop behind the fence but he could -- he still had line of shot, a line of fire into the dug out. >> firing through the fence? >> well he was firing around but he still could have fired into the dug out. that's why i kept everybody d down. joe bar barton's boy ten-year-od shagging balls went got him into the dug out and stuffed him under the bench. >> joe barton is who, sir. >> joe barton congressman from texas. he's the manager. >> did this appear to be
9:08 am
>> well it look like only one shooter. so you got to assume he knew what he was doing here. >> senator -- >> whether he was targeting certain members we don't know. >> reporter: again, as we look at the picture live here of these officers standing over some clothing. our image is being blocked by other investigators and officers here. but that's where we believe the gunman eventually went down in the parking lot there right behind the dug out and if we pan to the right when you were hearing senator jeff flake talk about where people were, where congressman majority whip scalise was standing which was out on the ball field if you pan all the way to the right here you'll see behind the car here the dirt infield here. and i don't know if it's going to be tough, from this angle but there does appear to stuff out in the field. if you go to the right just underneath the
9:09 am
there's equipment and clo clothg out on the ball field where some of these members, staffers were when the shots rang out, and just basically some as you her the senator say dropped in place. including the congressman scalise from louisiana who was out there by second base. just, you know, fell to the ground others were able to scurry into this dug out but being fired out across the way. eventually the gunman running hyped home plate behind the back stop into the parking lot where he was eventually dropped by one of two capitol police officers. a male and female officer one of whom was wounded but were able to return fire in hail of bullets as you heard the senator mention i mean he was seeing, you know, dirt, you know, pop up in front of him from where the bullets were hitting not far from him in a direct line of sight basicly from this gunman. and so that's the ball field. we're out here. this is monroe avenue. thedd

which is closed now as police still just two hours after this whole thing started at the early stages of their evidence gathering and information gathering as they speak to witnesses stand guard over the gunman's clothes. worry not sure if the rifle that the witnesses including senator flake report seeing if that arrival is there as well. you see the guns drawn by at least one of the two officers standing guard over that pile of clothing. i have not been able to see the rifle perhaps that's already been taken away as evidence and i'm kind of looking in a wider area of that parking lot and i just -- there's other stuff there. oy just don't see anything from this distance that looks like the weapon it may be there. but an active scene in terms of the post shooting investigation but quite a morning here, guys, in the del ray section of alexandria. >> unbelievable. unbelievable just how it all went down, and what was actll
9:11 am
just going on taking place on a ball field that is in the middle of a neighborhood. >> lock ins have been lived in alexandria schools. we had told you just out of abundance of caution kids kept in the classroom the lessons were not disturbed but there was a flock we're told that has now been lived. if you've been with us for a hill while now you saw our bob barnard getting some information from fox's -- fox news reporter or producer i should say chad pergram. he's letting folks know via twitter congressman scalise is under going surgery for a hip wound, and that basically another female we heard that u.s. capitol police officer was also shot and also add med star in the district. but five in total transported to medically
9:12 am
we were heartened to hear that the injuries sustained by the five don't appear to be life-threatening, again, though, congressman scalise who is the whip there in congress has been taken into surgery under going surgery right now for a hip wound, of course, we wish him the best out of this. >> it is amazing that when we hear the counts over and over again including senator jeff flake when he said 50 shots was an understatement the number of shots rang out we're only talking about five people being hit. but there was an all out battle exchange between those two capitol hill police officers that were acting as security detail and the lone gunman from the account we can recall that the gunman was the third place -- third base dug out and the security detail was shooting from behind the first base dug out while the congressmen were huddled inside the dug out. you can imagine
9:13 am
flake saying that joe barton a representative from texas had his ten year-year-old son there who was shagging balls helping out with the practice and they actually put him under a bench to prevent him from being injured at all. but, um, we know of the capitol hill police officers one was a woman senator flake referred to as crystal and then the other was the one i think if i'm recalling correctly he said was the one that took out the shooter. >> right. >> he was injured but -- >> who was injured. >> though injured took out the shooter. >> exactly. exactly. also, to mention i think you mentioned, holly, a gentleman who works for tysons food -- tyson foods who helps are you practice shot in the chest. they're just trying to help out congress people ultimately lo looking to unite at this huge tradition, this baseball game to help kids who need a little h help. so of course this gunshots ruining that for right now. but i'm sure the mission will go on. >> i'm sure.
9:14 am
the 25th district of texas it was his aid that representative flake referred to as zac. his aid was the one, um, that was shot and transported and congressman roger williams we saw he was on the one on the stretcher when we first went out there to bob we were seeing him transported. >> he was giving the thumbs up. >> he was actually as chad reported was one of the founders of the congressional baseball caucus. so very ept gallon all that was going on that this morning. >> holly right not we want to go to bob ba barnard. he's with former mayor bill you'll from alexandria. bob, good morning. >> reporter: guys, good morning. bill you'll here at the scene with us this morning. first of all you were in the area. what do you make of what you're seeing and hearing this morning. >> very sad tragic. these types of things don't happen here in the city of alexandria, and i'm a member of the ymca and i was leaving my home to head here for my morning -- daily w
9:15 am
do every morning. around 7:30 and i started getting text messages from friends wanting to know if i was okay. why? what's wrong they said there's shooting incident over by the y. i call the y on my way as i was in the car and they said we're in lock in. and no one can get in, no one can get out and so i said okay i'm heading to get as close as i can. arrived here and i've been on the scene for almost an hour, and i'm very cognizant of the fact this congressional republican team practiced ornithes field quite often about maybe once or twice a month. have been doing it for several years, and don't know the facts but it seems like apparently they were targeted for some reason. >> reporter: you mentioned some shots hit the y over there. >> yes. the y -- but between us and the ballpark the ymca is right there. >> i was told by the manager on duty in the y because i had a direct phone conversation with him and he said that we're okay. except for a couple of bullets that come through one or two window pains and but no one was injured on the inside. >> reporter: i know the school are no longer
9:16 am
you believe there's people still -- not trapped but stuck inside the y. >> it's my understanding they're still in one because the whole area is roped off as a crime seen until the police can, you know, feel comfortable enough to let folks leave and start moving their cars around and i'm sure some of the cars the patrons at the y were hit as well with bullets and so, you know, that all still needs to be investigate. >> bill yule long time mayor of alexandria as we leave your thoughts on what's happened here in these last couple of hours. >> i think like i said it's very sad, tragic, and prayers go out those that were injured and wounded and hope that, um, it's not life threatening but certainly for alexandria this is a dull moment. >> bill yule thank you very much. thanks for being with us. long time mayor of the city of alexandria and again, guys, as you look at the very large crime seen because bullets were going east and west and you have seen there in
9:17 am
believe the gunman was eventually felled by a bullet from one of the two capitol police officers who were here basically protecting the majority whip scalise from louisiana. the clothing is there. there's other evidence to the left as you're looking at your tv screens towards that blue shack there. there's other evidence i've gone as close up the street as i can to get better look at it i don't see the weapon that was used which has been described to us as rival. we see what appears to be the clothing being worn by the gunman still in the parking lot here. i've not seen the weapon it business that a bag and other things and again a lot of officers whoever. the ball players who were here up until maybe a half hour ago who were waiting to be spoken to by investigators are now gone. so really the people inside the perimeter here now at least here closest to the ballpark appear only to be police investigators and some paramedics a
9:18 am
guys. >> interesting that you brought up the weapon, bob, fox news is reporting they spoke with representative brad winston representative from ohio in that his account was that the gunman was firing a rifle and then a pistol before he was taken down by that capitol hill police officer acts as security detail. so details stelle emerging about all of this went down this morning. terrifying for everyone that was i will say, you know, we didn't comment on this earlier, all allison, it struck me so much you think about the day and age that we live in. when senator flake said he grabbed, um, the congressman scalise phone and called his wife so that his wife wouldn't have to turn on the tv this morning and hear that her husband has been shot. >> right. and holly to me that speaks to the fact that at the end of the day, regardless of your politics, you know, you are going home to if not just yourself going home to familiar, you're going home to
9:19 am
when this story -- when this story hits and then even you and i, we report on it, you say it's a congressman who has been hit. this congressman is a real person and i am really glad that it doesn't look like anyone will succumb to their injuries today. and i'm just selflessly hoping this serves as a reminder that you know we're more the same than we are different. >> congressman scalise again we do know is in surgery as we speak for his gunshot wound. right now let's go to anjali hemphill near the baseball field as well and has talk to several people. anjali, what are you hearing? >> reporter: yeah, guys, we've been running around this del ray neighborhood speaking to several neighbors and people who not only witnessed this horrific and frightening incident this morning but they also ducked and took cover. some of them ran to their nearby homes. not knowing where the bullets were coming from. where the shooter was. quite a terrifying experience that they have described t
9:20 am
this morning. you can see behind me here the street is block off. still plenty of police presence but many people were actual until nearby dog park when this shooting started. they heard the gunshots ring out. they say they immediately knew it was gunshots. they themselves hid behind cars. and i'll let them take it over from here and tell you more of what they witnessed. >> we was in my car. we was just leaving the gym and we heard a loud bang, and so it was a brief silence and then she look at me i look at her multiple gunshots and i hid behind my car. i just hid behind my car and i just realized and i piqued from behind my car and i could see the guy at the dug out pacing hollering get out of here, get out of here! he just holler. fearing multiple gunshots. at some point there was a little silence. she was back there with me she called my name and took off running towards her car. towards her home. i ran behind. there was a ymca bus i ran behind the ymca bus and hid
9:21 am
enough to see the guy was just behind the dug out pacing just shooting. just randomly shooting. unloading the rifle shooting and just letting it go. i mean, i ran down abreu silence i ran down the street and hid behind the second house. i hit on the side of the house and laid on the ground behind the bricks. they a brick house and i didn't come out until i knew the police was here. >> reporter: that witness with very good vantage point of of the shoot he tells me he did see the shooter. i don't believe any information about the shooter has been released but it was a man possibly late 40s, 50s wearing a blue shirt. and he did describe him yelling the words, get out of here!, get out of here! as he was firing shots off towards the baseball field. several other witnesses report hearing dozens of gunshots, 50 to 100 say think it all went on for minutes one witness described ten minutes as she made it all the way to her house a couple blocks away before she heard the gunshots finally stop.
9:22 am
hearing police return fire at that gunman as well. that's the latest with some witnesses out here. plenty more coming up later in this newscast. back to you guys. >> anjali thank you for working that for us. we appreciate it. we do know tom fitzgerald also has called in to us and said that the security profile of the capitol has not been raised not officially been raised. however, capitol hill police are encouraged to be more visible and that could be more over displaying of their weapons. just to be more out there so that there feels there's a higher security presence but the actual security level has not been raised. >> we want to check in with our wisdom martin. if you've noticed the shots, it just seems like this whole area is very tuck in little community here. we heard from the former mayor yule said he was working out at the y when he got word of it. that's not too far away. we saw a church near that bal
9:23 am
and so businesses are also there and clearly they have been impacted you see the road shut down and just the proximity to this madness and our wisdom martin actually spoke with some of those business owners for their reaction to this shooting much wis? >> joe so i did talk to and it's interesting former mayor bill yule was on his way to the y. i talk to people at the ymca, they went into lock down mode and the good news that everybody is safe. no injuries. bullets did hit the building. now, swing coffee which is 500 east monroe directly across the street from eugene simpson stadium park, they're direct ale cross the street, i talked to a worker who was in the store. he says at 7:15 they opened. workers, staff and customers were inside. they started hearing those gunshots. they actually saw the gun battle taking place on the baseball field. sitter didn't last long. a couple of minutes.
9:24 am
door. went into their particular lock down mode. look out the window at some point, saw cars on the streets with shattered glass. and saw a couple of people scattering here and there. the street is, was shut down. once the police arrived there on the scene. talking about monroe street east monroe street was shut down. and they have been told that by the police that their business is going to be closed. everything on monroe street will be closed probably they can expect for it to be closed for six to eight hours because this is obviously a crime seen and they're going to be inves investigating it for while. he was swings coffee which is directly across the street from the park. also talked to discover will he time learning center which is behind swings coffee. they say that they are safe as well. they did go into a bit of lock down mode but they are safe and that's the only remarks that they had to make couple other businesses in the area didn't really want to talk about but they did say they were okay. also the people at swings said they witnessed some of the bullets that actually either went into the glass or into
9:25 am
building over at the the ymca. this is a busy -- it's early in the morning but still a busy time of the day you have people stirring, people going to work out. people coming to work in the area. so they're over here practicing this could have been even worse than it already is. >> it's amazing. struck me as you were talking there, wis, was the fact you were like for the people in the coffee shop who were not in it,, we hear the people that were in it felt like, you know, it seemed like forever. but just imagine all of that going down. just in the regular course of a wednesday morning. >> right. right. early in the morning when your day is just getting started again this is something, this baseball game has gone on for 57 years. they've been practicing at this locate democrats and republicans have been practicing here, you know, getting ready for this game that will take place tomorrow and then all of a sudden you have this happen. this game not sure the status of the game now, but it's supposed to take place tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. at nats stadium. >> yeah. >> yeah
9:26 am
>> senator naked said like 10,000 people come out to the game. >> it's a big deal. >> it's for charity. it's a how much deal. as you mentioned earlier this is one of the things both sides can agree on to do this together for charity. so... >> thanks, wis. speaking of bipartisan support for causes that help us all in this case the baseball game the proceeds go to help under served kids. just scrolling through twitter and congresswoman gabrielle giffords who herself was victim of a horrific shooting that left her with a brain injury she stepped down from her position coming out and just saying that her thoughts and prayers are with her former colleagues and seeing other congress people on both sides of the aisle doing the same thing. our maureen umeh has been chechecking out social media imt with regard to what other politicians are saying how they're weighing in on this which looks like a

charged shooting. >> it is a politically charged shoot wagon we're seeing from the congressional members weighing in absolutely calm. everyone calling for unity and togetherness at this time. let's read i was couple of tweets. first one coming from president trump who talked about representative steve scalise from louisiana he says true friend and patriot was badly injured but will fully recover our thoughts and prayers are with him. that is the tweet coming from president trump early this morning. this morning, the hearts of the whole house are with senator scalise the brave capitol police staff and all those who were in harm's way that is from paul ryan this morning. and then gabrielle giffords iting two this high heart is with my former colleague they're families and is it and us cal toll police heroes today and every day. this one is from senator mark rubio praying for steve scalise capital police aids and any other who's may have been hurt this morning. as you see just a lot of tweets coming in from all members of congress. both sides of the aisle. also, some of the members who were
9:28 am
about their experience. i know senator rand paul tweeting he thought without the capitol police officers this would have been a blood bath he says. he says that they have could have been all of them sitting ducks there. that sent many echoed from other senators and congressional congressmen and women who were out there on that baseball field commending the capitol police assigned to the dignitary detail what it's call. they're assigned to that detail for congressman scalise. but turned out to be invaluable in this case one of those capitol police officers hit in the leg but managed to still return fire and actually one the one who hit the gunman through his pain through his injury avert wagon certainly would have been tragedy. want to take you back outside to our colleague bob barnard has been magnificently working the scene and getting us information. bob, you were able to talk to who exactly a what's the new information you're able to share now? >> reporter: well, what i'd like to let you know you see right there are several members
9:29 am
one of them the man in the middle with the white t-shirt has bandage on his right leg there. they've been released from the police who were questioning them it appears they're waiting to get their cars out of the parking lot here. the parking lot is obviously surrounded in crime scene tape. so they can't get their cars right yet. i asked if any of them would come over but they haven't. and some of them were seeking shade in tree over there. the senate sergeant at arms is here and chad per gram the fox news capitol hill producer is speaking to him now to see if he'd come over and talk to us. you can't see him. he's just around the corner h here. but he was here speaking with senator flake who has walked away as you see some of the emt's and what have you leaving here. so that's the latest here and it was just a fleeting shot at the end there but senator flake had spoken to some of those ball players and they've now just walked down to the other end of the parking lot again it looks like waiting to get their cars out.
9:30 am
sergeant at arms is not able to talk to us right now. he's here in ooh suit and tie he's here in his official capacity not here to may ball or to practice. that's the. so it appears at least so far guys a handful of the baseball players members of the congress and staff and family members who have been talking to police are free to go at this point and if we can, we'll try to get another one or two of them over here to speak with us to share with you their accounts of what happened here this morning. >> i'm sure, bob they're trying to process it themselves. what they just went through this morning. >> right. >> in the meantime, representative roger williams of texas has put out a tweet. he was there this morning. and in his tweet the actual tweet says, please keep the member of my staff and members of the congressional baseball team in your thoughts and prayers within that tweet here is the official release that has come from his office. office. 7:00am this morning armed gunman arrived at baseball p

all of a sudden the situation goes from zero to 100 your guard is down but thankfully the u.s. capitol police, they stand there at the ready and that put their lives on the line. we want to let you know we've been telling you about lawmakers tweeting, and past congress people tweeting and the president. we've now heard also from the first lady melania trump she has tweeted out her reaction and response from watching this horrific event unfold. and she too says thank you to the first responders who rushed in to help protect those who were hurt in alexandria, virginia, my thoughts and prayers to everyone there! >> you just can't imagine as the wife of the most high profiled politician arguably in the united states and in the world, you can imagine that her hair goes out to others who have been put in harm's way just by existing and serving the country in a political

it's very disheartening they would become targets. >> there's a live picture from where our bob barnard and his photog are and as you can see, the driver side window there shattered. shot out by one of the bullets that was fired. we've heard reports up to 50 to 60 shots fired in the course of the battle that took place at this ball field. bob, are you there? what can you tell us? >> reporter: we're standing right across from this car here. yeah, a mack suv with virginia plates. you can see police are pro protecting it, and it is the driver's side front window that's been shattered here. glass on the street. we'll just pan left just to show where you we are. we're slightly up from the ball field, and if you look down monroe avenue here, several blocks are closed off. you see lots of law enforcement only officers investigators emt's paramedics allowed on the street itself for several blocks here in front of the ymca and this simpson park. and we're not on a tripod it might the

ago in surgery trying to repair the damage done by lone gunman who walk up to the baseball field where they were practicing for tomorrow's bipa bipartisan baseball game which benefits charity and just opened fire. there were reports that he had two firearms. one a rifle. the other a pistol of some sort. and they're just started shooting those who were out there practicing, and thankfully they were there, though, with security and the security perhaps here the difference maker for sure as the us capitol police were able to return fire and to take that suspect down. as crazy as it sounds it was literally a gun battle at a baseball field the players the congressmen go there every morning around 6:30 to practice leading up to this long standing d.c. tradition of the congressional baseball game set
9:42 am
field or tomorrow i'm not sure what the actual game time was but 10,000 people in attendance they were going to raise $650,000 for under privileged kids here in the d.c. area. this was their last practice before the big game and someone actually noticed someone walking up and then leveling a rifle and just started shooting. we know that senator steve scalise was second base. he was shot in the hip. he dragged himself for little bit and then just laid motion less very scary and representative or senator flake was saying that they wanted to get out to him but there were so many shots being fired that they really were hold up in the first base dug out and were waiting for that to come to an end before they could go administer aid to their friend. we do know that -- let's see. we're getting here -- >> this is list of those

9:46 am
we heard it. we her the capitol police who were an scalise's detail, and they were the ones who saved us. and i can't say enough about the capitol police and what they d did. but it was simply a surreal experience. the main thing is, it was so out of context for everybody. this is a game for charity. members play it. they've been playing it for almost 100 years. and to have this happen, it's unconscionable. >> marty your last name again. >> la very. >> are you a congressional staff photography. >> no i'm a free lance. i work on the hill. >> senator flake when he was talking to us live earlier mentioned marty the photographer who was the first to see this guy. >> yeah. >> and are you okay? phys physically? >> yeah i guess so. >> you're covered in dirt but you're alive. >> i just wish they let me get my camera i'm

and then we were breathing dug out dust face first down then we started hearing gunshots about . and that's where i see one of our capitol police officers shooting from around the corner of the dug out the first base dug out towards the third base dug out where the man with the rifle is. and i don't know how long that was. it seem like forever. but i'm pretty sure it was not more than 60 to 120 seconds. capitol security reactioned firly quickly. there was some time to figure out what was going on. i'm sure there would have been some more time to figure out where the shooter was and from where the capitol police are stationed they would have had two dug outs the first and third base dug outs between themselves and the shooter. >> pardon me, tio. we need to most media seen much this is going to be become a secured area. >> we need to move the media scene. >> congressman brooks -- >> sure. we'll relocate. >> i heard steve

i think we got away far enough for minute. can you take us through what your experience this morning? >> um, normally during batting practice -- >> can you move down. i'm sorry to interrupt we need to make this secure scene. >> we'll move down a block, guys. >> thank you very much. >> news conference 10:30 at the -- >> we'll walk with this congressman and. stay with us. we have a few feet to go to get where we can actually, disturb i have heard things to that effect from other reporter that is jeff duncan had a conversation with the gentleman, jeff duncan from south carolina, but i don't have any personal knowledge of that. i just heard another reporter say that there was a conversation. but the neighborhood knows that this is where the republican congressman and senators practice for the congressional baseball game. we've been doing it ever since i've been in the united states congress. >> they would have known you were here? >> the neighborhood would, yes. the neighbors have always be wonderful walking their

9:54 am
active shooter. there were i think steve scalise was yelling i was hit. or screaming because he got hit with the pain reaction. um, from there, once i realized that i was in very bad position -- >> behind the crime scene tape. >> keep on moving. >> all the time you want. >> i ran around the batting cage which is a chain link area with a cover. might not be chain link might be some kind of webbing, plastic webbing. it's got a 4-foot high blue plastic around it. at least the shooter can't shoot you any more or see you. >> sure. >> i ran behind that to the first base side, and then lied down, hit the dirt along with some other congressmen or senators, i don't know who all was neck to me but there were three or four others. it occurred to me that if the shooter came around the third base dug out then he would have us tennessee
9:55 am
on the ground an easy shot, and so while he was still shooting, i made the decision probably smarter thing to do to take chance of getting shot while rnning. ran to the first base dug out, dove in as did the other people who were with me. then hit the deck in the dug out. in the dug out there are a dozen or so people. some were on their cell phones screaming that we have an active shooter. and that we need assistance. i see one of our staff members has a bullet hole in his leg in his calf. i take off my belt and myself and another gentleman i don't remember who it was applies the belt as a tourniquet to his leg to staunch, n fairness that staff he was gutsy he was saying it wasn't bad at all but i mean there was a hole in his leg. so we put on the tourniquet despite his remark
9:56 am
laid down on the dug out floor again. shortly thereafter, just loud explosions. i look up and there's a guy with a gun about 5 feet above me shooting. at first you don't know if that's the second shooter but it turn out to be one of our guys shooting back risking themselves giving us protection. when i say risking themselves when you're shooting 90 to 100 feet away one guy has got rifle and you've got a pistol that's not a fair fight. so at this point in time both of our capitol police the security detail that was there with us is engaging the shooter and i think trying to pin him down behind the third base dug out. at some point or another, he goes around the third base dug out towards home plate where he's taken down and if we had stayed behind that batting cage we would have ten or 15 feet from him prone on the ground easy
9:57 am
so but for the grace of god and the aim of those shooters execution me our capitol police officers shooting back i'd with steve scalise in the hospital some place along with our other people. gotten to our dug out, there were another dozen or of us senator instead of flake was there -- jeff flake was there. i can't keep track of who all was there it was kind of bedlam. it could have been really bad. our two capitol police both were wounded, again, arrival against a pistol, and they risked themselves and sacrificed themselves in the line of duty protecting us. >> do you fuel like they were targeting you? do you have a sense they came here because you guys were playing? >> well it was one person. >> right. >> republican baseball practice. united states congressmen. i cannot imagine him going there for any other reason than to try to kill as congressman as he can. >> copping man have you worried about the atmosphere of violence you've seen kathy griffin with be

fourth amendment search and seizure rights because it allowed some criminals to go free who should be behind bars. these rights are there to protect americans and while each of them has a negative aspect to them, they're fundamental to our being the greatest nation in world history so, no i'm not changing my position on any of the rights that we enjoy as americans, as with respect to this particular shooter, i'd really like to know more about him whether he was an ex-felon by way of example who should not have have had potion of a firearm. i'd like to know other things about his background before i pass judgment -- >> congressman brooks -- >> congressman brooks it's only been three hours. >> it's been three hours. >> wow! >> what's your mental state. >> your first impression of this whole this ming. >> well, it's the feeling of helplessness. when you've got a baseball

we actually have a statement that is come out now from representative steve scalise's office. this is the official statement and it says at practice for the congressional baseball game scalise was shot in the hip transported to med star washington hospital center where he is currently under going surgery. he is in stable condition. prior to entering surgery, the whip was in good spirits. spoke to his wife by phone. he is grateful for the brave actions of u.s. capitol police,& first responders and colleagues. we ask that you keep the whip and others harmed in this incident in your thoughts and prayers. this office will row lease additional information regarding the whip's condition as appropriate. and it is ironic in some regard as we heard representative brooks talk there that we're talking about scalise being the one that was shot. he is the house majority whip the third in line in the house there and t

that's the case in fact i think you're looking at a picture or video of eagle one that's u.s. park police's helicopter landing here at washington hospital center earlier this morning. as you were saying moments ago congressman scalise is in surgery here at the hospital. i've been here for i'd say about the last hour or so. when i arrived, eagle one was still on the landing pad and there were officers stationed around the area with their lights on making sure no one got here. also, i should tell you that there was a large armored tactical vehicle the type that you would see the typically rush in to an emergency scene. that vehicle has since pull out. dave, can we show them around here? this is emergency area here. i just want to you seawall of the law enforcement vehicles that are here. the emergency room just probably about 100 feet from me. there you can see capitol police officer.

force are here. we've noticed a lot of activity coming and going and i have to tell you when law enforcement officers and other dign dignitas are typically involved in some type of emergency situation especially law enforcement officers, you see all of their colleagues rush in to the hospital area. at this point, we are being kept off the grounds for awhile but i just heard from a security officer that they could be calling the media in to one particular area. we're still unsure if they're going to give muss kind of media briefing in the next hour or so. so we don't know exactly how many people are here at the hospital. this particular hospital. we do know congressman was brought here. we also know that there are two other people that were taken across up to to george washington university hospital. they also have a great trauma center here. so the very latest things have calmed down i'd say in the laugh half hour. there was lot of activity
10:10 am
when i arrived about an hour ago. the helicopter took back off that tactical vehicle. it also left but there are still are a lot of officers here. we've also noticed some black suv's pulling up. we're wondering if maybe other dignitary errs are coming here. we just don't know. they typically ride around in those type of suburban vehicles, and we think that maybe someone is coming here to either be here near the congressman, get updates, things like that. so that's the very latest from washington hospital sent. once again we are hearing congressman scalise is in surgery at this hospital. this is one of the best hospitals in the region. so many believe he's in good hands and that's the very la latest. as soon as we get an update hopefully hospital officials will give us some kind of briefing, we'll get to you right away. back to you. >> so matt, i just want to clarify i'm not sure member you said this. we know the congressman is there at washington hospital center. any word about the capitol police officers? >> reporter:
10:11 am
about that although fox5's paul wagner has been reporting, you know he knows the police department and law enforcement very well. typically when an officer is shot, they are brought here to this particular facility. but at this point, we haven't heard from hospital officials. we believe that also those officers are here but we have heard from the congressman's office. that's how we know that he is here at this hospital for sure. at this point, though, hospital officials here at washington hospital center haven't briefed us. we hope to get a briefing in the near future, holly. >> all right, appreciate it. thanks matt. again, congressman scalise there washington hospital center went no surgery was reportedly in good spirits when he went in. spoke to his wife. and that he is in stable condition. it is also important for to us note we know that two other of the victims had were shot were taken to gw hospital they are listed in critical asian. >> don't know the shooter what hospital, you know, they're at

so you know i would imagine that person would have been hit pretty severely by the capitol police officers returning fire but we don't know where the shooter is now. the good news here, the silver lining is that there have been no reports of any fatalities as holly just methed congressman scalise is in surgery but was well enough to talk to his wife. i can even imagine what that phone call must have been like, um, only to start with i'm al alive. gnaw good spirits as was representative roger williams from texas. he was being transported on the journey we saw to life here on fox5. he gave the two thumbs up. he was not shot. but one of his aids was shot and we are hearing now that actually representative williams did break his foot. so you can imagine we've heard a lot of different representatives talk about the

baseball here this morning were targeted by this gunman and he believes they were because this was not an unknown thing. maybe we, i didn't know, member you at home didn't know, that the republican members of congress practice for their charity baseball game at this field, but congressman brooks said the community new. perhaps this guy new as well. i was impressed by that, and his harrowing account of what happened. i moon he was very level headed obviously in just less than three hours time describing his experience here at the shooting this morning but earlier, our first real eyewitness account of what happened this morning was right around 8:00 o'clock if i'm not mistaken this morning. so within an hour of the shooting and it was u.s. senator jeff flake of arizona. republican senator from arizona who was on the ball field, and he was the first really who had been caught up in all of this to come over and speak to us, and other reporters then joined in on it. here's a

senator flake of arizona. his description of the scene here this morning. >> -- was standing near joe barton, um, watching some of the batting practice, and all of a sudden we heard a shot a very loud shot that everybody thought sounded like a gun and then, boom, rapid succession after. he had a rival of some type. and obviously a large gauge rifle. and, um, there were people in the field. one staff was shot out in the field. and he ran with a wound to the dug out. a lot of us dove into the dug out and tried to get as many as we can. but then at that point, there was firing behind us from the security detail capitol police. and i is that right started yelling back, are you friendly? are you friendly? making sure that was our guy because we didn't know if there were on the shooters that had us surrounded and would come into the dug out.

>> good morning, everybody. i'm mike brown chief of the alexandria police department. b-r-o-w-n. we're today to give an update on the incident that occurred this morning here in alexandria. let me pre pete if i can, some of the facts that we do know at this point. before i start, though, i want to say that this is an incident is not an active incident. the city is safe. we have, v an active investigation going on for the incident that took place this morning but i want to reassure the community here in alexandria that this city is indeed safe. we will continue to work witness investigation as it moves forward. the facts as we have it this morning again at 0709, nine minutes after 7:00 o'clock, we received a call 911 call of an active shooter at

on monroe in alexandria our units responded and were on scene within three minutes. the officers were received fire from a suspect and they return fire. and part of the investigation is on going as we speak. we came to find out that at this event was a practice session for baseball team invo involving soe representatives from congress or some employees from congress. there were capitol police individuals on scene and they also engaged with the subject and i'll let the chief the capitol police respond to that. the emergency medical personnel that responded to the scene from the alexandra fire department as well as officers from the alexandria police department provided treatment to a number of individuals on scene. those individuals we know that five of them were transported by public emergency medical sources to hospitals within the area to deal with v

and treatment. at this point the alexandria police department because this is case involves the assault on a federal officer the federal bureau of investigation will be taking over the investigation and we welcome our work with the fbi. we are imbedded in assisting the fbi along with other agencies that are trying to deal with this particular scene and in this investigation of this incident. with that said i would also like to say our gratitude to the allied agencies that respond to do this scene. we had individuals from the alexandria sheriff's department, of course, the alexandria fire department who were initial response helped us great deal in trying to manage this thing. and quite frankly i couldn't be more proud of the men and women that were involved from the alexandria police department. they did an out staning job in my opinion from what i hear so. at this pent i'd like to go ahead and introduce chief villa rosa from the cap tool police to

long term and let me also do a thank you to the agencies that assisted us and as we canvassed the neighborhoods and looked around the community to make sure this was safe, that would include the virginia state police, the alexandria stere riffs office and a lot of folks even in the neighborhood came out to kind of make sure that we were doing the rye thing. >> chief, is there any other -- minor injuries. >> there were five people transported by emergency. i won't go into that. >> i can't speak to the information others are reporting. five people were transported. >> i'll refer to the fbi. >> any other injuries life threatening. >> from your point of view on a broader level and your knowledge about the national capitol area, your view about safety of the area did you have any information prior? any investigatory agenciesha

at this time. >> i talk about this every single day this is a very serious issue. i just came with kennart tee we just buried one of our great state troopers a special agent with a wife and three young children. needless and senseless. so we've got to look at this i'm not going to get anywhere the investigation. the fbi is leading this. this obviously with 93 million people a day it's something -- >> 93 million is a big number. did you mean to say 93 million. are you sure about that? >> 93 individual as day. >> 93 individual as day. >> how confident are you there were any other attacks plan. how confident are you? that is was a one and only and there couldn't be any. >> from virginia perspective we monitor all of this. we had no threats now. we're not concurring looking at as it relates to this incident. this is tollly up fbi and the local law enforcement. >> there's so much am chris moan knee on the political discourse and dialogue in this country. there's so much back and forth and venomous discussion. are you concern that that climate in in it way crib to do what we saw
10:47 am
thoughts about the climb we're in? >> i can answer on today. the investigation is going on. i do think things have become very hardened in this country today we got to begin to work together to get things done we're the greatest nation on earth and that's been too much raw discourse in this country today pulling people apart in general and we need to work together to bring people together to work together as governor i worry about economic development, education, transportation, basic things that people here in virginia want, and that's what we need to focus our energies on. >> thank you. >> we do not enough briefing scheduled at this time. however we will be communicating with the media to let you know we will be providing another update later this afternoon. >> news conference just wrapping up this is the second one since this happened. this one obviously involving governor terry mcauliffe there reports trying to engage him in some policy discussion. but he was very clear when he first stepped up to the mike and said i just want to
10:48 am
clear that this was extraordinary effort by first responders especially capitol police in what went down and i want to thank them for that. >> holly did it strike you that the message that community around there is safe was definitely driven home couple of times? >> yeah. i think that rightfully so people are unnernerved when allf a sudden a gun battle erupts in your neighborhood. they said multiple sometimes chief mike brown especially is fbi tim later from the fbi saying look this is safe community. this is not an active situation an active incident any more it is very much an active investigation. there is still though some confusion over perhaps the number of people that were shot there. we got that really first hand account from senator flake and he indicated there were five people shot. but the officials will not confirm whether the five people include the gunman or that the gunman is in addition to the five people that
10:49 am
but definitely they would nowhere close to anything about the gunman at all. nothing. >> not at all. one good news, though, i think we got from that press conference was chief villa rosa u.s. capitol police saying that his officers are in good condition, and they're definitely not life-threatening injuries. we didn't think they were. he did roar they were in good condition. >> governor mcauliffe himself a democrat when he walk up his message was that they saved a lot of lives today. of course, talking about the first responders law enforcement that's there. it's important to note us capitol police of course first line of defense a lot of people are calling them the heroes saved the day, saved this from being something much more tragic that you would hear about but also wip a couple of minutes three minutes in fact the chief mike brown of alexandria police department saying that his officers arrived on the scene some 52 to 100 -- 50 to 100 bullets shot back

between law enforcement and the gunman who was holding some sort of a long gun some say an ak47. >> we've seen that. >> we have not confirmed that. >> not your typical pistol which is all the capitol police officers were armed with. so no -- essential follow new details to come out with but basically driving the message home that area there of del ray is safe. the capitol police off officersl recover. they said five people were transported that was the word they used transported from the scene. of course if you're at home you're wondering is this an act of terrorism. ? was it politically motivated were they specifically targeted you know, they asked all those questions. the officials wouldn't go there. fbi tim slater did say he did not believe it to be assassination attempt. >> i think we have chuck schumer on the floor right now. >> so he just wrapped. d

we've her the rhetoric we've her this morning from everybody on both sides of the aisle. >> literally put their lives on the line. so the house side of things we mentioned earlier that word coming out from the -- from congress that there would be no votes today there would be no speeches on the house floor today in honor of what has happened here and the colleagues who are missing today. >> well our colleague bob bar far has been working hard this morning from the scene. he's gotten a lot of first hand accounts. he's right up there where all action happened. so we want to go back to him now and see what you're seeing now. bob. >> reporter: yeah, guys. i think some of the numbers confusion we saw a man here who was one of the ball players who had bandage around his leg. we have also heard and saw with our own eyes tt

congressional leaders of this ballgame this charity ballgame was taken away on gurney but we don't believe he was shot. that maybe he got hurt running from the gunfire. so that's where the numbers might be confusing. who has been shot. who has been taken to the hospital for other reasons. and you heard senator jeff flake describing some things so maybe some of the pictures are murky but one of the men we heard from him earlier in case you missed him if you heard him earlier it's worth hearing again marty a free lance photographer he saw the first saw the gunman aiming at people on the ball field. one of things we just heard in the news conference witness governor and fbi police chief marty they didn't want to say anything or couldn't say anything much about the gunman himself. tell us the person you saw, you were one of the first to see h him. >> i was standing near first base. he was behind third base a

chain link fence. so that's quite a distance. all i saw was a white male then suddenly i saw the rifle, the big black rifle and i don't know if it was a rifle, shotgun or what it was but hit a clip so obviously it was an automatic. the thought that went through my mine why would anybody be out here with rival shooting at birds at this time of the morning? because nobody comes to the practice to observe and there are people who go through this around the park who walk dogs. so when you're there at 6:00 o'clock in the morning you don't expect people there. and so i -- that's all i saw, and i drop it out of my mind and then suddenly i heard somebody say, get in the dug out! so whoever said get in the dug out, saved my life, because i was just standing therend

hear the shots up to that point. >> there had been shots though you didn't hear them? >> i wasn't aware of it. you know,. >> sure. >> you're asking the right question. who knows. >> you had a camera you were there to document this as you have for years to take pictures of the members of the congress practicing. >> and hitting a baseball. and had i put on my photojournalist hat oh, there's the shot and i would have taken it of him with the rifle. and then you said that scalise wasn't shot, i'm surprised because i thought he was -- >> no, scalise was shot but there's some question. there was an older gentleman we've got to go. marty an older gentleman i think williams or something, a congressman williams. >> oh? williams. >> taken away on a stretcher we're not sure if he was shot -- >> no. he either broke his leg or -- >> his foot. >> he broke something and was probably getting a it way or

getting into the dug out. >> that's the question. marty, thank you so very much. >> my pleasure. >> appreciate your time and marty, again, explaining that that congressman hurt his leg but congressman scalise shot as he was out on the field, guys, and that was marty lavor are free lance photographer who cover these practices and games for years and was here this morning according to most who were here was the first one to realize that there was a gunman on the ball field this well, guys. >> bob, just for your own information we did receive word earlier about congressman williams that he had actually broke his foot and that's why he was being trance for po poured. >> makes sense. >> goes along with what you were saying does we have video of him. >> yeah we did. >> we saw him life waving to everybody he seemed to be okay. again i think that's why some of the officials were transported five people well one congressman williams was transporte but he wasn't shot. so that's where the numbers are a little murky at this hour. >> all right. appreciate you bob. thank

check back in few. right now we're getting some new information where a tributing this to the washington post. they are releasing the fact that the suspect is james t. hodge kin son of bellevue, illinois. >> washington post is reporting law enforcement officials according to the washington post say the suspect is james t.hotchkinson. bellville, illinois. 66-year-old. a little older than what the description of the people who were there they had guessed to be in the 40s or 50s. they did say report him to be a white man. james t. hodge kin son. the port is reporting on him he had a home inspection business but that license expired in just november of last year
10:57 am
>> they are roaring the 66-year-old man from illinois was indeed the shooter this morning. that's the latest information now to come out that is new information we hadn't known the suspect's dent if the b no pictures right now. we her the photographer say had he had his photo journalism hat on he would have been able to get that picture but we do have the next best thing which is his age, 66 as holly mentioned from illinois. james t. hochkinson. >> as you can see from our live pictures everyone still in place there. it's still very much a secure situation. it's an active investigation that will go on for some time as we can imagine. the fbi and the latest press conference that we saw there saying that they are indeed taking the lead in the investigation. it's an assault on federal officer. so once they found out the member of congress was involved they become the lead organization but he also went on toay
10:58 am
went on to say it's very much a joint task force that is working on this and we have seen many parties partake this morning and we're seeing many members of the congress from both sides of the aisle come out and be grateful to all of the first responders that went into immediate action this morning. atf on the scene, too. also with the fbi. holly one thing that you remarked earlier was that there's fantastic sound or sound bites or witness account from people in that community because of just how active that area is. people running by stopping or even the former mayor working out there and just walking over the ymca not too far from where that ballpark is. so right now we want to recap and bring you some of some of those interviews that reporters in the field have been able to get from near where the shooting happened early this morning. a couple of minutes after 7:00 this morning. people were running

baseball and we were -- everyone was yelling get down. so we all kind of were running toward the end dog park and had our dogs get down. after the first shot i knew it was a shooter but i didn't know why. i didn't know who was playing here because we usually come here every morning. >> how many shots did you hear? >> it went on for it felt like ten minutes. >> that was just one witness there we've heard many accounts this morning of the harrowing experience the battle on the baseball field that went down in alexandria. we also know that president trump he really only had one event public event i guess you would say that was scheduled for today it was supposed to be at the department of labor. that was canceled. the white house is now reporting that president trump will speak. he will address the nation and that will happen at 11 11:30 of course we'll bring that to you live when it happens but president trump and going to address the nation regarding what went on. what transpired this morning right here in our neighbor the nation will hear him but
11:00 am
right here he will talk at 11 11:30. >> you know and we -- it's hardd when you're talking about this incident, though, my favorite image of the day is the group of democrats praying for the republicans who were attacked in this manner. i love that by partisan unity there, but we have also gotten reports and the reason why we know this person knew he was shooting a group of lawmakers the earlier reports that person mentioned or the gunman mentioned before who is out there right now? is it republicans or democrats? i just think it's important to to know the motivation yet. coud have just been anti government altogether. who knows? making comments. who knows what it is? he did know that they were -- they were lawmakers out there and that's what we have to focus in on right now, because for me ultimately it does become an attack
