right now combing the area for evidence. that is a fence, where we were told was critical in this investigation. the count right now we have that were five wounded in this shooting, others injured, injur, seek shelter, capitol police, being credited for saving lives in their quick response to this incident alongside the alexandria police this morning. the bottom line is this: this situation secure here in alexandria tonight, but to be clear, this neighborhood is far from normal. >> no package, no package, no package. >> clearly we will bring you more on this report. but let's tell you what we heard, what we've learned today. congressional members out on the baseball fields today practicing for a game that would take place tomorrow

congressional game, raises money for charity, supposed to be fun event, supposed to be something showing bipartisanship in this city, that is so lit apart right now. this game has been going on for years, these practices have been taking place, every morning, at 6:30. so, here's what happened. congressional members, they come here, they get ready to play ball, they go back out onto that field. they take up their positions on the ball diamond. and they were about a half hour into this practice today, when this all turned disturbingly dark. senator jeff playing tells us that he's at bat when all the sudden he hears something that he believes to be was construction equipment, then suddenly somebody shouts out gun. he turns around to see other members of congress who were on that field, running for that dugout. once in there, us capitol police officers who were here as part of the protective detail of congressman steve

scalise, third highest ranking republican in the house of representatives, they begin to return fire. >> what eyewitnesses tell us they heard anywhere from ten minute of gunfire, possibly, 100 rounds fired. what it was all over, the suspect finally taken down, the injured taken to local hospitalization, and this community still reeling tonight by the effects of this tragedy, not only here in this neighborhood, but across the country. we should tell you, there were initial questions as to whether or not that game, that congressional baseball game, was actually even going to take part tomorrow night. it took a few hours, and announcement was made in an effort of fortitude, solidarity. that will game tonight in the wake of all of this tragedy, is going to go ahead as planned. >> we're live in alexandria in the delray neighborhood tonight, tom fitzgerald, fox5 local news. >> we do have team coverage tonight, matt ac lynn live at the hospital where the victims

>> the latest on the reaction from capitol hill. first start with paul wagner live on the scene in alexandria, paul, were you looking into the suspect's backgrounds, what did you finds out? >> a lot of people here in alexandria notice his photograph, have been telling us about him here in the last couple of hours, his name is james t hodgkinson. he's from bellsville illinois. he came here to live in alexandria, couple elf months ago, we understanded, from former mayor bill yul he would see him at the ymca right across the street from the ballfield almost every morning. he would be sitting there, on his laptop. he got talking to him, he said, he was living out after gym bag. but he did not speak about politics. in fact, we've spoken with a number of people who got to know this man over the last couple of months. he wasn't ranting about politics; however, if you go onto his facebook page, you will

president trump. we are also learning from people that live here in the delray section of alexandria that he was a frequent -- he would go to the restaurants out there along mount vernon avenue. in fact, one of the restaurants he went to was the pork barrel barbeque. and i spoke with a bar tend their named jamie craig earlier today. she said he put off a vibe, a weird vine, when he came in. didn't really talk to anybody. but he didn't talk about politics, he didn't talk about guns. he basically, he was talking about being a home inspector, and that's one of the things that we did learn. we also have learned from former mayor yul that he was apparently looking for a job, some people were trying to help him finds a job. he apparently applied for a job as a dog walk err, but wasn't apparently working anywhere at the time of the shooting. so, this shooting has come out of the blue, as far as what we can tell here from the people that new this man,

but why he would suddenly snap like that, and go off, and go across the street, is still unclear. so, that's generally what we know about him. we did check with the carpenter shelter, which is the homeless shelter here in alexandria. they say the police have been by there. but to say that he was living there would not be accurate. now let's get more on what was happening over at med star today. lets guess to fox5 matt at lynn. matt? matt? >> we will check back in with matt shortly. a lot of moving parts today, a lot of different locations a we continue to follow what happened. but we should point out the president earlier today addressed the nation. >> in a television statement dollars he thanked police for their swift action and made call for unity. >> president trump: everyone on that field is a public servant, our courageous

offers and is a survivor of gun violence. now, let's check in with matt at med star with an update on the victims. >> ronica, this is where two patients were brought earlier today. we have a little good news. the congressman, he's a critical condition. but the good news is about one of the capitol police officers, we're told by the police chief, that she is in good condition. she was shot in the ankle, is still here tonight, but is in good condition. congressman, though, he is still here inside the hospital in critical condition. i want to take to you some video. you've likely seen this on social media earlier today. this is of congressman's scalise being taken from the ballfield on a stretcher. he was loaded up on a helicopter, and flown here to medstar washington hospital center in northwest. we know he underwent surgery earlier, not long after arriving. all right, let's take you now to the four other victims. and tell you a little bit about them.

for representative roger williams was also shot. late today, after the shooting, he tweeted out: in the hospital but okay. matt a lobby he is for tyson foods. we understand he was taken to george washington university hospital center. and two capitol police officers, who are being called heroes tonight, had been identified as david bailey, and crystal griner, both special agents. as i said earlier, the capitol his little chief said groin is her in good condition after being shot in the ankle, and bailey was treated and released following a minor injury. let's take to you one more piece of video. all day long there has been a heavy police presence here at the hospital. many officers caring assault weapons and even a tactical vehicle was brought in earlier. about 90 minute ago, the capitol hill police chief came here to the emergency room to check on his officer. and we're not sure if he had any inner action with the congressman at

hospital center, there is media gathered here from all over. we've been waiting all day long to hear something from the hospital, the way they've been communicating with the public, with the media, is basically tweeting out details. and once again, the latest detail that we have on the congressman is is that he is in critical condition. we've noticed some suv's, they appear to be either capitol police, maybe secret service, suv's pulling up here all day long, we suspect maybe some dignitaries had been coming here to visit family member, to check on those who were brought here. we didn't recognize anyone except the police chief. but we are waiting here. we think maybe the hospital will brief us later until the day. but we will be here in the case that they do. live at washington hospital center in northwest, matt, fox5 local news. we showed awe photo just a moment ago. i want to go back to this to gave you a sense what's going on. this is a group of the democrats who were practicing today. they were in d.c. y

. this is fox 5 local news at 5:00 more top stories at 5:30, an update on the toddler who drowned on capitol. the 2-year-old's death has been ruled as an accidental drowning pleadings have not identified the child, but the toddler drowned trying to cool off in an inflatable pool. no word if charges will be filed. in the district, police are investigating a deadly shooting in northeast from overnight. it happened at about 12:30 in the morning, in the 5800 block of field place, when police arrived they found a man who was shot and later died. police do not have a suspect description at this time. i saw the shots being fired. medics,

them they didn't slater. i'm special agent in charge of the field office, i'm here to provide an investigative update on the shooting that occurred this morning, i would like to think the alexandria police department, the u.s. capitol police and medical response teams who responded to the scene this morning for the quick and decisive actions. actually, saving lives. i remind you that this is an act of investigation. the details continue to unfold. i stress this earlier and i'm going to under score it now. that the fbi is not going to talk about the character or nature in which we are investigating this case. other than to say we continue to work this as an active investigation and an ongoing matter. there's been some confusion about the injuries involved.

our statements sent out earlier today this afternoon actually, identify the number of victims and their injuries. let me just review that quickly for you. five individuals were shot. a congressman, a united states capitol police officer, a congressional staffer, a lobbiest and the subject. an additional two individuals a congressman and a capitol police officer obtained secondary injuries at the scene and were transported to local hospitals and treated. as for the subject -- and this is the only time i'll be referring to him by his name, this afternoon we released a statement noting that the subject name was james hodgkinson, 66 years

belville, illinois. he sir comed to his injurys at the hospital and the dc medical examiner has issued the cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds to the torso. the fbi issued a seeking information poster identifying the shooting and it can be found at wwwdot fbi.gov. i'll while the subject is diseased we continue to investigate the motives, acquaintances and whereabouts that led to today's incident. we will continue to have presence as we process a scene here in alexandria, an fbi agents are searching the shooter's homeowner, resident is bellville illinois. the subject vehicle was located on scene and has been

alexandria pd, and the atf and we will be processing with our fbi evidence recovery team as well. obviously, we are looking to glean what we can from the contents regarding his electrical devices that he owned. law enforcement has reason to believe that the shooter has been an alexandria virginia area since march of this year. the fbi has issued again, seeking information poster located on our website asking the public to come forward with information on this shooter. to the local alexandria community, we believe that the shooter has been living out of his vehicle in the vicinity of east monroe street. therefore, asking you to report any interactions that you may have had with him. likewise, the subject

with all the talk about the congressional baseball game, this is a tradition, it will go on. and there's a real steep history that goes along with it. i mean it's again going on for 108 years. there have been fits,ing for various things, obviously world war ii they didn't play a few years, depending on who the speaker of the house was, if they felt like playing the game or not. there have been allegations of ringers coming into the game over the years >> a big and controversial history. >> it is. but they love playing it because both sides of the aisle come together. put everything aside for the diamond. >> when house speaker paul ryan announced today that tomorrow's congressional baseball game will be played as scheduled. members of congress cheered. tomorrow's game 108 year history of congressional bipartisan on the baseball
