act. >> congressman scalise is a friend and a very good friend. he's a patriot and he's a fighter. you have the prayers, not only of the entire city behind you, but of an entire nation. a shaken capitol after louisiana representative and house majority steve scalise, two capitol police officers and congressional staffers were shot at a suburban baseball field in alexandria >> witnesses told us that congressman scalise dragged himself off the infield after shot and laid there till the shooting was over and the colleagues rushed over to help him. the lawmakers were here practicing for a longstanding congressional baseball game tomorrow at nats park. scalise was shot in the hip tonight he is in critical condition. at med star washington hospital. certainly just seeing those images, not only just shaken congress but folks who live in this area and across the country. >> woke up this morni a

sure a had lot of you learned it that way, it's a big story, been put a big story all day, it will continue to be a big story and many of you were talking about it. we want to keep your tweets coming, use the #5at630. let's get to it. fox 5 tom fitzgerald starting us live in alexandria. fitz? >> reporter: jim and shawn, good evening, we're at the simpson ballfield. many members of congress and the republican side dove into that block dug-out in order to avoid the gunfire, many say if it wasn't for the quick actions of the u.s. capitol police, the death toll could have been higher than just the suspect. the fbi washington field office, special agent in charge, tim slater released a bulletin on the suspect, they're asking anyone in the

specifically in the dell ray neighborhood to contact them if they know anything about the suspect, james hodgkinson. they believe he's been in this area since march, living out of his car and trying to see whether or not he's had interactions in alexandria with anybody along his way. this is been a dramatic day, a mile a minute. it's been times hard to catch your breath. we wanted a give you a rundown on the sights and sounds of this afternoon and hear from the people who were on the baseball field. >> it was supposed to be a friendly practice wednesday morning in alexandria ahead of thursday's annual congressional baseball game in dc. >> i looked to my left, and saw man walking across the outside of the baseball field carrying a very large gun. >> then the practice turns deadly. just after 7:00, the shooting begins. republican members of congress on the simpson

come under fire, jeff flake is at the plate >> i was finished batting and we were standing there and all of a sudden, from around the third base dug-out, a loud crack and somebody said that sounds like a gun. very loud. and then boom, boom, started going again and we knew it was. then you could see gravel around start to pick up. and so several of us knew the dug-out just get in the dug-out's we hopped in the dug-out. mo brooks of alabama not far turns and sees the gunman firing on to the field. >> i saw that -- it was a rifle either sticking through the chain link fence or right up next to it. as the shooter was shooting away, >> witnesses describe hundreds of shots first from the shooter and then the return fire from u.s. capitol police officers. photographer

cover >> somebody said get down and get close to the wall, then heard another round coming from the rifle. >> reporter: after a ten-minute exchange of gunfire, the suspect fatally shot by u.s. capitol police. chief matthews verdosa said his officer's actions saved lives >> it's preliminary to go into the details. suffice to say, our officers acted heroic today. >> reporter: congressman steve scalise, the third highest ranking republican in the house, a congressional staffer, a aid and two police officer, others injuries in the scramble for safety while residents are in disbelief. >> it's echoing everywhere and then you just hear boom, boom, boom. >> you don't associate those noises with my gosh there's a shoot-out going on in the front yard >> i thought it was horrifying. >> reporter: a

left this alexandria neighborhood and the nation in shock. >> we're back live now at the simpson field here in dell ray neighborhood. what you're looking at right now is a live shot of what has been going on here, a sweep by alcohol, tobacco and firearms agents who have been going up and down the length of this baseball field tonight. scoping that out, picking up shell casings, trying to identify pieces of evidence. it is not just this baseball field, which is the crime scene here, as you can see, this tape literally comes up right to where we're standing, there's a playground next to us, it's a four-block region here, probably about close to a square mile that is the subject of this investigation, we expect this work tonight, jim and shawn, is going to go into the evening, live in alexandria, sending it back to you. >> thank you, fitz. the fbi identified the shooter as 66-year-old james hodgkinson of belleville,

louis >> paul wagner has more on the shooter and what may have been his motivation. paul, good evening. >> >> we are learning quite a bit about this man in the last couple of hours mainly because we found man that did run into him since march as we know he's been here since march and living out of his car or a gym bag at the ymca across the street from the ballfield, according to the former mayor of scarier, bill yule who would go and work out every day and have a cup of coffee in the foyer there at the ymca, he got to know this man, he would sit there on his computer, rarely talked politics, would he listen to political discussions but he didn't go on any rants, he said he was looking for work. he was a home inspector, mayor yule said he was trying to if i wanted him work. he said he wanted to to know where he could go to eat and drink. frequent add restaurant on mt. vernon

barbecue where i talked with a barnard who told me show got a weird vibe from him but didn't talk politics from him. we do know that he worked as a volunteer for the bernie sanders campaign, and on his facebook page, he ranted against president trump. now, i did an interview with former mayor yule just a little while ago, this is what he had to say about what happened this morning. >> i missed seeing him this morning, simply because as i was arriving at the y, heading there, that's when i got learned about the shooting, and i couldn't get there. otherwise, i would have probably met him and counted him one way or another certainly, before or after, but it's my understanding that he did arrive this morning, wasn't in the y long, exited about 7:00. next thing, folks heard gunfire. >> reporter: the mayor said he never would have suspected anything like this would happen, he says the man did not speak about firearms,

rants against republicans or president trump, is this just all out of the blue. we're live here in alexandria, paul wagner fox 5 local news. today's shooting shook both houses of congress, barbara com stock represents the 10th districts and joins us live. before we get started i want to say, you represent a large number of our fox 5 viewers. they want to hear more from you, let me take this time to extend that invitation to you to come on any time and talk to us by a wide number. let's get to the subject tonight. this has to hit close to home. we know you sit on a house committee that oversees the capitol police that protect the leadership. do you feel safe? did this work today, it was supposed to >> first, i'm hounds administration committee and the capitol police, as you've noticed today and everybody talked about did a wonder job, they are the law enforcement professionals who were there

but also we're with -- steve scalise, who's our number three majority whip. they saved all those lives today. if they weren't there, could have been so much worse. so you know, the very emotional day. you know, very sobering day, and you know, steve has a young family, he's a person as the whip who is taking care of us, and the capitol police taking care of us, because there was some of those injured and staff members, staff and, and a former staffer were there, this is family. as the speaker said, attack on one of us is an attack on all. we're looking on the house administration committee, we're going to be look i want to go policies, leadership already was looking at more security improvements and upgrades because of rise in death threats that we've seen >> when you look at the congress, 435 of you, you're in the communities, you know, reminds me of gabrielle gifford was at a

was shot five, six years ago. your colleague, dave brat was on cnn talking about going out into the community. doing these town halls, and looking at possible remedies. how do you move forward? you mentioned the security angle. but this again is a representative government we have >> and we're going to still be out there. i know, you know, you mentioned gabby gifford is my colleague, martha mcsally holds the same seat had a death threat. somebody arrested there just today, claudia tenney got an e-mail that said one down, 216 to go at my good riddance. that's being investigated now. so you know, i think today, everyone did come together and talk about what are some things that we can do to sort lower the temperature here, lower the tone, but also, look at the security, which we did, i worked on capitol hill in 90's when we had the shooting when we lost the two officers there. congressman delane's office friend of mine,

majority leader. i don't know if it's majority leader but they were under their desks in fear, that's when we did security upgrades. and we have to look at that again, it's about protecting the public who visit our sites and also when we're out in the public and i know that's something that the offices have talked to us about our district offices and security there, and on a bipartisan basis today, we have the members together, a number of members mentioned concerns about the district offices, and i think we may have additional upgrades in security issues addressed there. >> i know that the security detail goes to the house leadership, but just other members of congress, you don't get that same protection or security when you're out in the community and you're not on capitol hill. do you feel safe and secure and are you already talking about changes specifically for your office or how you move throughout the community >> i do want to note they aren't just -- they aren't just security detail,

with steve scalise but these are federal law enforcement officers professionals, highly skilled. many of them work in my district. so i do feel secure with them, these are people we see every day. they work around the clock. so we're, feel confident with them and they work us with us on policies and practices in the p. i know today, this weekend, when i was out with my daughter and granddaughter, i was at a farm and owner came up to me and said do you all have security? what do you do >> i was dropping in, you know, to visit there and i do feel secure in our community. we want to but there are practices you can put into place, particularly for our young staffers, in person, a member today mentioned to me just yesterday on capitol hill someone had come in and made some threats you have young people, we want to make sure how to deal with it and i think it's important that the public understands. of one of the things

talked to our committee staff house administration committee about today, was we may need to let each other know a lot of different threats going on. one of our colleagues anne wagner from missouri talked about some of the death threats that she had gotten. and really, it was very emotional. and this is, al green, a democrat member had talked about some. oftentimes that goes with the business and i think we need to talk about that both to so our you staff understands and people in the district and so that we can get practices in place that make us all safer and particularly the public safer. >> absolutely. thank you so much for coming in today. . >> thank you for doing the good reporting on it and we pray for all of the people here who are affected today and god bless our capitol police who are real heros. >> we want you guys to weigh in. tweet us using the

the game will go on. where are we heading >> we're going to talk to ronica cleary because obviously a lot of reaction coming from the capitol and that's where ronica is at this moment. >> reporter: jim and shawn, the reaction has been unusual coming out of the hill. because people are showing unity. bipartisanship and let me tell you while you're hearing a lot out of alexandria this morning because that's where the republicans were practicing, the democrats were practicing right here in the district, and we have reaction for you from members of both teams, just after this happened. take a listen to these accounts, pretty unbelievable. >> they asked me to come down here because i had an interaction with someone in the parking lot who asked me if the team practicing was democrat or republican, i told him they were republicans' he said thanks, turned around. i got in the car

found out my republican colleagues were targeted >> the heros are the police officers who attacked the shooter and in doing so, quite probably saved many be many lives. >> mike doyle, who's a democrat from pennsylvania, who's the coach of our team, the manager of our team, he calls everybody in, why is he calling us in? we haven't had batting practice yet. and he told us what happened. and it was just we all got quiet. it was unbelievable. i'm still in shock, very sobering, very sad. we all said a prayer for representative scalise and the staffers and the capitol policemen that had been injured and it's unbelievable. we're just getting together to play a game of baseball. this game benefits charities. >> congressman vici, he said he's not afraid to play in tomorrow's game as you reported it is still on at the top

emergency emergency room at hospital where steve scalise remains in critical condition >> what is the latest you have for us >> you're right. he remains in critical condition. the very latest information that we have for you came four hours ago from the washington hospital center saying basically that he was brought here and that he remains in critical condition tonight. let me take you to video shot earlier. this is video you've likely seen, this is congres

scalise being taken from a ballfield on a stretcher loaded into had a helicopter and flown to med star washington hospital center in northwest. we know from that point be he then underwent surgery. also, let's tell you about the victims. too. four other victims, zach barth, who is a legislative staffer for representative roger williams was also shot. later in the day, he himself, he tweet to do from the hospital apparently or maybe just outside in the hospital, but ok, matt mika is a lobbyist for tyson's food was taken to george washington university hospital center. and two other capital police officers, david bailey and crystal greener. both special agents and the capitol hill police chief said greener is in good condition after being shot in the ankle and bailey was treated and released following a minor injury. so a little good news, if any,

any, looks suspicious to us. >> in that situation, you know, if they're just out there on the field and you hear those gunshots, you didn't see the bag, what's the best thing to do? >> evade and elude, they did exactly what they were supposed to do in this kind of situation and scenario, which was to flee. normally, we have a mentality of fight or flight. this individual, the attacker had a gun. they had nothing but bats. so they allowed the police officers capitol police to do their jobs and those guys did outstanding. >> we see the good there. that it worked out in that favor. would you not say nowadays we also live in a society where people may see a threat and their first reaction is just to pull the phone out and put themselves in harm's way and try to get that picture rather than fleeing for cover? >> unfortunately, we definitely live in a social media world, where everybody is trying to get their intents of fame. so

the guy was recording it and someone said did anybody call the police? and he said i'm sure somebody did but continued to record. so you know, i think we just have to really somebody may have not called the police. everybody was engaged with what was going on. i think we just have to be really cognizant of the events that unfold as they unfold >> you train law enforcement. this is a tough situation for them. i mean, capitol police in general, used to dealing with the public, what sort of unique challenges do they face not only when they're out with leadership but also when they're on capitol hill? >> the unique thing about the reason why i think that these officers were so impressive is because normally, on an average congressman and senators don't generally have a great deal of, no big enter rag, you get
