wondering what's going on? then i hear somebody they scream out he's got gun, run. and at that point i see the shooter. he's got a long gun. he's at the third base dug out. just taking deliberate aim at me, at members of the congress and i high tail it to right field. there's nowhere for me to go. there's no gate or anything. i do the best thing i can, i get on on the ground make myself smallest target possible i see him turn his gun towards me and it just starts popping around me. he hits me in my leg and at that point, you know, my adrenaline is pumping and my fight or flight reflections take control i decide if i want to live i need to get to better cover so i sprint down running for my live sprint down the first baseline into the dug out and i just jump in and i jump into the arms of the congressmen and we just -- we stay there, um, i was

and i wasn't really concerned about that. i was just concerned about staying alive. so i was keeping my head down. keeping the congressmen's head down and we were just trying to make it through. we didn't really know what was going on it was chaos but thank the lord for officers bailey and greiner without them i might not be talking to ya'll. >> zach is a hero, and our capitol police are the heroes. if they had not responded as they did, i don't think anybody would have made it through. all we had was balls and bats to fight this guy. and so it was not a good situation and i was hitting -- i was hitting ground balls over in the third base side and did not know he was even behind me. we were probably 20 feet away or 20 yards. i then went around to hit ground balls to steve scalise. the% one we heard the zach talked about i turned only place i can think of was the first base dug out. the dug out is about 6 feet in the ground real dug out. and i just dove head first into that dug out and all of a sudden

mo brooks and then out of nowhere comes zach running he'd been hit and he just as he said jumped into my arms and we held each other. mo brooks took his belt off and gave it to flake and myself to create a tourniquet to try to slow the blood down and and we just were so thankful once we saw the capitol police begin to return their fire and eventually stop. it was an unbelievable moment. >> just a harrowing story and just minor miracles happening throughout this to really safe lives. >> that's right. >> more now on the story. team could have ratch we have for you bob barnard live at nationals park. melanie alnwick at the scene with more on the investigation. but we want to start with update on the victims of course and for that want to turn our fox5 annie yu at med star hospital with the update. annie, what's going on? >> reporter: hey, maureen. well unfortunately, things remain the same out here. we have congressman scalise still in critical condition here at washington med star. we did learn

star though exactly sort of where he's at. we learned that he was shot in the left hip and the bullet went through his pelvis fractured some bones. he had a lot of blood loss. and did undergo a surgery yesterday, however, we're told much needed surgery in the road ahead so a long road ahead for the recovery of congressman scalise. i can also tell you that in the last 20 minutes or so, we've seen an up tick in the security here. we saw u.s. capitol police officer showing up, dc police as well. there's word that vp mike pence was or is here right now visiting congressman scalise. and he is not the only one. late last night president trump and the first lady made their surprise visit out to washington med star with flowers in hand to show they're sign of support. the president calling scalise a true friend and patriot, and then moment later, he expressed his support on twitter for the congressman tweeting this "just left hospital. congressman steve scalise one of the truly

very tough shape but he is a real fighter. pray for steve "this is also video i want to show you of yesterday of just moments after the incident of emt's taking congressman scalise from the ball field on stretcher there. he was medivacked here to the hospital. he underwent surgery but, again, we've learned that he still has many martha he needs. two capitol police officers who were part of scalise's security detail they he can changed gunfire witness alleged gunman james hodgkinson. while others we understand took place or sheltered in the dug outs and hodgkinson was shot. he later died at the hospital. among among the other shot here's photos of on the victims. tysons food lobbyist matt mika he's in critical condition this morning. congressional aid zachary barth was shot in the leg he's expected to make a full rec recovery. good news there the two capitol police officers who special agent crystal greiner was shot in the even ankle said

the scene on monroe street shut down from here dewitf mount vernon avenue to route 1 still a lot of investigative equipment here on the scene. we understand bullets literally sprayed all the way across the street red cross here on the scene as well to support the investigative activities. we do know that the atf is tracing the rifle and the handgun that the suspect used they're also searching his home in illinois and as you mentioned fbi now probing into james hodgkinson's social media investigators believe that he had be living out of his car near the area of east monroe street in alexandria since march. but we still don't know why he left illinois. his facebook page says he work as home inspector. he was also active on anti republican sights. ap reports he had prior arrests for resisting police and drunken driving in the '90's and arrest for battery in 2006 his hometown newspaper said he had

several times angry about republicans and tack policies. the shooting shocked people who got to know him briefly here in the del ray neighborhood. neighborhood bar employee said he came in often. talk about golf and real estate but not about politics and guns and former alexandria mayor bill yule said he would see him at the ymca working on his laptop and apparently hodgkinson was at the wmca yesterday shortly before 7:00 a.m. when then the shooting began. back out here live, the wmca also just down here on the street, and so it wasn't very far from there over to the ballpark. so right where you see that black vehicle that's sort of the main entrance to simpson field and stadium here. want to also let you know the fbi continuing to ask people for information, any contact they may have had with james hodgkinson either in person or online. people are asked to please get in contact with the fbi and by the way we're learning that this street this

representative steve scalise. he remains in critical condition this morning. i think he's little bit -- he was more injured than we all thought yesterday. >> came as a shock. >> came as a shock. last night president trump and the first lady visited scalise at med star washington hospital. meantime, we're learning more about the gunman. 66-year-old james t. hodgkinson of illinois was shot and killed by police. the silver lining in all of this, tonight's annual congressional baseball game will go on as planned at nats park. >> we do have team coverage on this story. melanie alnwick is live at the scene. but we want to start with annie yu who's at med star hospital with the latest on the victims conditions and we're also hearing from one of the staffs who was shot right, annie? >> reporter: that's right. congressional staff zack barth one of the victims did speak out to fox this morning we'll get to that in just a bit first i want to tell you what's happening behind me here at med star washington. within the last hour vice-president mike pence did visit the hospital to

congressman scalise and you can kind of see the up tick in police presence here. capitol police here as well as dc police, and so they have been dealing with that for the last 30 minutes or so. but congressman scalise he was medivacked here yesterday after he was shot in the hip. congressman scalise's condition unfortunately has not changed. med star washington let us know he remains in critical condition and we're told he has a long road ahead he's going to need several more surgeries. now, the congressman was standing at second base on the baseball field yesterday when those shots rang out we're told that he dragged himself to the outfield while others jumped in to the dug out for protection and among those shot we just mentioned this congressional staff zack barth. he was shot in the leg and he appeared on fox this morning alongside congressman roger william. take a listen to his horrific account. >> so, i was out in the outfield, shagging fly balls. i hear loud pop and everything stops.

statement just moments after leaving, saying that he has a tough road ahead and asking for prayers. now for more on this investigation and more about who the shooter is, let's head over to my colleague melanie alnwick. good morning, mel. >> reporter: good morning, annie. and here on the scene on monroe street it is still shut down and we understand it will be shut down until probably tomorrow morning. if you look way in the distance there you can still see near that cross walk some evidence markers still in the middle of the street. i can tell you that the atf is tracing arrivals and hand gu guns -- arrivals and hasn't guns used in the shooting. investigators arely searching the shooter's helping in illinois. the fbi says it's also looking in james hodgkinson's social media presence trying to figure out his motive they tell us that hodgkinson had been living out of his car near this area right hre in alexandria since march. we don't yet know why he left illinois. his facebook page says he worked as home inspector. he was also active on anti

republican sites. the ap reports he had prior arrests for resisting police and drunken driving in the '90's arrest for battery in 2006. his hometown newspaper said he had written in self times angry about republicans and tax policies. but the shooting also shocked people who got to know him here in the del ray neighborhood briefly. local bar employee said he came in often talked about golf and real estate but not politics or guns. former mayor -- alexandria mayor big yule said he would see him at ymca look work, on his laptop and he was there at the ymca shortly before 7:00 yesterday morning and then apparently came out here and began the shooting. one other thing we want to let you know is that the fbi is still again very actively investigating this man's background. they're asking people who have come into contact with him either in person or on social media to please get in touch with them. you know arc lot of times we somehow assume or we just make that leap th i
