they are also trying to keep some exposure to a nearby building down. they're trying to protect that to keep this from spreading. fortunately no injuries have been reported. potential heat exhaustion is a problem. >> this at one point was a chevrolet dealership. right now there's another look -- this is a little bit early on when the flames were intense but you get a sense of what they're up against there. looks like a older building. you'll deal with different building materials there and they'll try to battle that blaze but once again, this is over in mount airy, maryland. we'll keep an eye on this one for you and keep you updated throughout the course of this newscast. >> new information in wednesday's shooting in alexandria that left a congressman and lobbyist critically wounded. >> the weapons were legally purchased. now comes the task of figuring out the motive t paul wagner live in alexandria with more. >> reporter: jim and sarah behind me is the ball field where the sho

yesterday morning and the atf and the fbi have been here all day long combing through this field trying to find extra shell casings and perhaps some expended projectiles there are in the field. we want to tell you about this new information now and share this with you. according to the fbi in a press release statement that they put out just a little while ago, they say that they have recovered two weapons from the shooter, a 9-millimeter handgun and a high powered 7.62 rifle, that is 7.62 ammunition that can fit into that high powered rifle. those guns we are told were purchased legally. they also recovered a camera, a computer and a cell phone from the van that the shooter was staying in presumably that may help them determine a motive as well as they are going through social media contacts and accounts that he had and perhaps looking for a possible motive in there. we already know that he had been ranting against

republicans and president trump. we know that the first call to 911 was at 7:09 yesterday morning and the shooter was down having been hit by gunfire by 7:14. we also now know that two alexandria police officers also engaged the shooter with their own gunfire. when the shooting began just after 7:00 wednesday morning, the two capitol police officers working a security detail for the majority whip were positioned behind the first base dugout. the shooter identified as james t. hodgkinson of illinois was firing with a high powered rifle through the chain-link fence on the third base side. the fbi says two minutes after the alexandria officers arrived, the shooter was down. this is hodgkinson's fan parked between the ymca and the ball field. the fbi says inside they found the camera, computer and cell phone that may hold clues to the man's motivation. since yesterday, the fbi evidence respoe

with federal partners have been scouring the ball field looking for shell casings and rounds. they took particular interest in a ymca minibus also parked in the lot. the fbi continues to ask for help from the public. agents are looking to talk to anyone who had met or spoken to hodgkinson since he arrived in the area from march. from letters to the editor and social media accounts we know the 66-year-old railed against the 1 percent republicans as well as president trump. now, we told you we would bring you up to date on the three people who were being treated for their wounds. three people still hospitalized at this hour. one is very brave and courageous capitol police officer crystal griner. she was hit in the ankle. we're told she is in good condition. but still hospitalized at medstar. we also know that tyson food lobbyist matt mika is in critical condition still. as is

steve scalise who went -- who underwent surgery again today. now, earlier today president trump had more to say about scalise and his condition. here is what. >> to again send our thoughts and prayers to my friend and the friend of most of us in this room, steve scalise. and his great family as he continues his very brave fight. it's been much more difficult than people even thought at the time. it's been -- he's in some trouble. he's a great fighter and he's going to be okay we hope. >> reporter: now, we also want to tell you about david bailey. he's the second capitol police officer who again courageously engaged the shooter initially we were told he was shot but he did sustain an injury but it wasn't a gunshot wound. he has been treated and released. we also want to show you now what the

ammunition used in that high powered rifle. this is the 7.62 ammunition used in that rifle. they did not tell us the make or the model of that ammunition but this is what it looks like. so, we're going stay on top of this story, of course, and we're live in alexandria, paul wagner, fox5 local news. >> all right. well, let's take a live look now at capitol hill where tonight in the wake of yesterday's shooting in alexandria, one member of congress says senators and representatives should be allowed to carry guns. >> and some members announced they'll begin to carry side arms, others want congressional resolution to exempt members of congress from d.c.'s concealed carry prohibition. >> tom fitzgerald live on the hill tonight. tom, i believe you spoke with the office of the georgia lawmaker who is behind all this. >> reporter: that's right, sarah. his name is barry ladder mick. he's a republican out of georgia and this is what he is proposing. latter milk says members of co

from states that allow the concealed carry of weapons should automatically be allowed to do that here in the district of columbia. now, there's a couple of problems with that, mainly the fact that d.c. does not honor out of state concealed carry permits. we caught up with both mayor bowser and police chief peter newsham. they had a couple things to say about that. they said there is a process for this type of thing under current d.c. law and both said they want a good look at what the congressman is proposing before they go any further on commenting about this. >> we'll see how that plays out. i can tell you right now we do have a process here in the district, we're very comfortable with the process that we do have and so if they want to avail themselves of the current state of affairs in the district of columbia, they're welcome to do so. >> we, of course, with the counsel of the district of columbia passed the laws that we think help make d.c. safer and stronger and that's going to be our view. >> reporter: so, you would oppose t

it is so i would have to see it first. >> reporter: now here on capitol hill we can tell you today, the day after that shooting at the alexandria ballpark there was a noticeable difference in the security profile from the u.s. capitol police. we saw capitol police officers being brought around the capitol campus en masse by bus. we saw officers out front of capitol office buildings with long guns showing. we also saw an increase in the roads surrounding the capitol building itself. now congressman ladder milk points out the fact that if the majority whip republican steve scalise had not been on that ball field yesterday, there would not have been a capitol protective detail in tow to take down that gunman. latter milk is saying that is the reason he as a georgian wants to be able to follow georgia's law while he represents that district here in the nation's capitol. some of the visitors here to the u.s. capitol we

agreed with him. >> reporter: should members of congress be able to arm themselves. >> absolutely is. why not. >> reporter: what your thoughts on that. >> yeah, we can arm ourselves. it's good for them, too, good for us. >> reporter: you have a concealed carry law and your congressman in your own state. should you be allowed to conceal carry in d.c. >> i think so, yeah. >> reporter: what are your concerns about that? concerns about safety. >> my saved. >> a senator a lawmaker should be able to carry that in public. it not only protects themselves but most importantly i think at times it protects someone else. >> reporter: we should tell you latter milk is not the only congressman talking about this issue. already congressman chris collins of new york has announced he'll begin carrying a firearm at home district events. we reached out to the u.s. capitol police spokesperson today where u.s. -- for u.s. capitol police on this o fox5 has not heard back. live on the hill tom fitzgerald fox5 local

>> and you know of course they've said the congressional baseball game will go on. that is at nats park tonight and it kicks off in a few hours h safety measures, security it is expected to be tight there. police presence will be very visible at nats park. they ramped up security following that the a tack of ato targeted republican congressmen. brody logan is at the stadium. we'll head to him live right now. brody, how are things going out there? >> reporter: there are some extra security measures. i know that you mentioned it. there are some people -- there are some people waiting here to get in, various congressional staffers and then really a lot and a lot of media, people from all over the country that have come in for this game. and if you're going to come, you might want to get here early because they're going through extra security measures as you mentioned as you go through the gates here at nats park but there are some people -- they have some signs. if you want to show off the signs. they're coming out here, they're

>> ♪ >> after more than 30 hours jury deliberations still no verdict in bill cosby's sexual assault trial. members of the jury say they're deadlocked. the judge is ordering that em to go back to deliberations. cosby is charged with drugging and sexually assaulting andrea constand in 2004. those deliberations have stretched out across four days. the jury has come back to the judge with at least six questions asking to rehear parts of testimony or asking for clarification on the language in a specific charge. >> he is just happy to know that he has 12 people of his peers who understand that the facts of this case don't add up. >> this is not a vindication of anybody. and it's not the end. it's not over until it's over. we'll have to wait until we see what the jury

decides. >> so, the jury is made up of four white women, six white men, one black man and four -- one black woman and one black man. they were bussed in from allegany county which is where pittsburgh is. they have been sequestered in a hotel. if they can't reach a consensus the judge could declare a hung jury and a mistrial. if convicted cosby could spend up to 30 years in prison. >> today d.c. police announced more than a dodds outstanding warrants for people they believe were involved in the may attack of peaceful protesters outside the turkish embassy. a total of 18 are facing felony and misdemeanor charges of assault. so far four have been arrested. fox5's anjali hemphill is outside d.c. superior court with more on the story. anjali. >> reporter:. >> reporter: sarah, one of those four people who were arrested faced a d.c. judge here this afternoon where he was held without bond and d.c. police hope others involved in that vicious attack will also be brought to

>> i condemn this attack. it was an affront to our values as washingtonians and as americans and it was a clear assault on the first amendment. >> reporter: harsh words from are d.c. mayor muriel bowser after 18 people are now facing charges from an alleged attack by turkish security personnel on peaceful protesters outside the turkish embassy back in may. >> with the help of state of the art technology, law enforcement has identified several suspects by comparing screen captures from video footage to visas to passport images. >> reporter: d.c. police say nine people were hurt after security hired to accompany the turkish president during official business in washington, d.c. attacked them during a peaceful protest on may 16th. two arrests were made that day. two more including this man of virginia wer

wednesday. d.c. police now have 14 outstanding warrants. most of them turkish citizens and two canadiens. >> i run opposite direction from my friends and some of the turkish president body guards put me in a chokehold and he drove me on the -- on the ground and while he hurting me, he was saying you're gone and i'm going to kill you. >> reporter: kurdish woman wanted her voice heard that day. instead, she says she forever lost her sense of security. but she is glad to see the man she says hurt her facing charges. >> i'm very thankful for the justice -- for the justice of the united states and i appreciate the -- for support of the american people and and government that their behavior will not be tolerated on american soil. >> theirot

little higher but i think the whole perspective changes after you've been through what we've been through with the tropical level humidity and the record heat. perfect night for baseball. i know they're going to fill the stands down there for our congressional baseball game. i think you're going to get it in dry. first pitch is at 7:oh fiefs forecasting 82 degrees, a great night to get down there hopefully still some tickets available if you would like to contribute because it all goes to charity. it will be a mix of clouds and sun and mother nature is really helping out in that department because it does &-út and the storms aren't making any progress getting closer to d.c. which we'll look at in a moment. hey, what a difference this 84 feels so much better, doesn't it? new york down from 72 a couple days ago they had 101-degree reading at la guardia, boston 74, 82 for richmond. let's get in a little bit closer and look at some of the temperatures around the region. 84 for dulles, 86 for manassas, 83 for gaithersburg and frederick 86 so definitely near or a little bit above average today for the hig

is a bit more reasonable. when the dewpoint is in the mid 60's we say that's noticeable. and you can see culpeper still getting a dewpoint to 70 but it's much drier to the north so we've had a little bit of a dewpoint boundary come on through. frederick's dewpoint 55 degrees and that's important because that's where the storms fire up so all these popcorn-like clouds that you see out here to the west that's where the storms have been but they're not making much progress getting past interstate 81 at this point. you can see we had a few a little while ago and they have fizzled out so i think for most of us that live closer in, we're going to see a dry evening but i just thought i'd show you the futurecast in case you have plans this evening and you can see most of that activity does not get into d.c. different story down towards charlottesville, you might have a little better chance of seeing showers and storms. last thing here, the weekend humidity is going to be returning but we'll still get another break from that tomorrow. might not get a pass on the storms, though, so we'll show you what to expect for friday if you have outdoor plans so you don't get taken by surprise by any

they looked up into this tree and that's where they found what appeared to be a noose. well, the management company was called. also police were called and then when police got here, they removed it from the tree. here are the pictures residents snapped before authorities took the noose down. monica moore spotted the noose as she was getting her kids off to school. >> i was upset. i -- i couldn't do nothing. only thing i could do was look at my babies like they got to live in this area. and it's sadism gina lives in the building closest to the tree where the noose was that ground. >> going to move my family 'cause i don't feel safe. >> reporter: so upset and worried she cried telling us about the conversation she was forced to have with her daughter. >> but this is really hurt because my 13-year-old daughter saw that and she's like what is this. she doesn't understand why they're doing that and i told her there's a lot of hate out here. but there's a lot of people that's white do not hate you. >> reporter: tonight montme

>> ♪ >> this is fox5 local news at 5:00. >> top stories at 5:30 today a judge heard arguments in overturning lee boyd malvo's six life sentences. he was convicted of capitol murder for the 2002 sniper killings. he was 17 at the time and he claims his life sentences have been rendered illegal by a u.s. supreme court decision saying mandatory life without parole sentence are unconstitutional for juveniles. the judge expected to make a decision in the next 60 days. >> montgomery county police need your help solving an armed robbery that happened nearly two months ago. take a look at this surveillance video. this was newly released of two suspects in the case. police say they robbed a verizon wireless store along georgia avenue in olney, maryland. one suspect kept an eye on two store employees while the other one stole a bunch of cell phones. >> in prince george's cnt

figure out what sparked arhats fire in clinton at a home on win brook drive yesterday. you can see the fire extended to the attic. the red cross assisting two adults displaced by the fire. it caused about $175,000 in damage. james comey assured president trump he was not under investigation, that's no longer the case. special counsel robert mueller reportedly investigating president trump for obstruction of justice. >> fox5 political reporter ronica cleary live in northwest with a look at how the investigation has taken a new focus on the president. ronica. >> reporter: hey, jim and sarah. well, today the president responded to the news that he is in fact under investigation by special counsel robert mueller. now an investigation into obstruction of justice. let me just take you back a minute if you're feeling a little confused by all of this. the first thing is that we just heard former fbi director james comey say that he in fact did not investigate the

he confirmed it with the president and that was really a talking point you heard out of the white house once that information became public. well, now the investigation is changing scope. when the fbi -- the former fbi dirctor led that investigation it was focused on russia's meddling into the elections. now that we have these reports that say the president is being investigated for obstructing justice, it tells us that the investigation is moving in a new direction, if you will, or at least expanding. and finally, let's talk about the white house's response today in an off camera press briefing, deputy press secretary sara huckabee sanders, she was very close to the vest basically referring all questions about this to the president's legal team. but i'll tell you who's not staying close to the vest, the president using his favorite fae twitter this morning to tell you what he thinks about all of this. look at this first tweet from early this morning where he said they made

interesting jim that you mentioned put politics aside and take it out on the field. we've seen a lot of people, congressional staffers fans and people coming in with signs and a lot of them share that message that we're putting all that aside, democrats, republicans to play in this game. and tickets in the last 24 hours, the response has been great. over 500 tickets sold per hour. they've doubled what they sold previously last year and last year's game raised about $500,000 for charity. this year's game has already raised over $1 million for various d.c. area charities, the boys and girls club, the nationals dream foundation and as you can see behind me people are starting to go in and there are heightened security measures. they're telling people to try to get here a little bit early. they are being extra careful which is understandable after what transpired yesterday. i want to show you some pictures. i met up with some staffers from congressman steve scalise's office, the congress wounded yes

shooting and they had signs they made for him, they're supporting him. well, they are here at the game. a let's go sign in the shape of the state of louisiana and go in the way that cajuns say it down in louisiana and then that sign that shows democrats, republicans all on the same team here today and then of course the real m.v.p., capitol police and lauren demarco is here. she actually spoke with congressman from pennsylvania. what did he have to say about this [inaudible] >> reporter: well, he's the democratic manager, the manager for the democrat team. he said everybody will be playing tonight for congressman steve scalise. obviously the reasoning behind all of these ticket sales and everything is not great but he was calling it sort of a silver lining that they've been able to raise double the amount that they usually raise and they've added a charity of course the fallen officers' fund because of what happened at simpson park and i heard you touching on security. you know, thinking about the capito

many of them out here tonight as well working hard and i was just talking to some of the officers, they have the k-9 units here, specific k-9 units that can sniff out vapor. there's all kinds of things going on as far as security that we can see and can't see behind the scene. one issue is the heat. they're actually taking the temperature of the ground. right now the sidewalk is 143 degrees. if it goes 7 degrees higher it will be too hot for their paws they'll have to wear little boots so they're worried that might cause a frenzy, why are they wearing boots. that would be the reason. right now already the blacktop is too hot for them, so just a lot going into all these security measures. so much media here, more than they typically see for these events, so it's certainly a show right now but the good news is so many people coming out showing their support and all of this money that's being raised. >> i was commenting on twitter this is more media than i've seen for a nats playoff game here. it's a big national story, so many people coming in from out of town to be a part of this and one thing

again and it will be lovely tonight. something that could have been disruptive thunderstorms and there have been a few towards the shenandoah valley is that the potomac high lands but they have been falling apart as they get closer to d.c. we'll start with that forecast for the game. brody lauren out there make sure you say hi to them if you're heading out. first pitch at seven:05 i think the temperature will be close to 82 degrees with a mix of sun and clouds and we'll keep it dry for that game. these are the high temperatures. everybody coming in at 85 degrees and only feeling a couple degrees warmer than that because of the humidity is more in check for this time of year. so, mainly a rain free forecast for our area tonight. again, if you live along or west of interstate 81 that could be a little different story for you but after the sun goes down we think even that will settle just a little bit. tomorrow we're going to have more clouds around and a little better chance in fact we're going to say a 50-50 chance of scattered afternoon thunderstorms and evening thunderstorms. in fact, our futurecast is really bullish on 7, 8 o'clock with some thunderstorms with heavy rain. over the

of storms have diminished quite a bit. they'll be spotty but the humidity will be coming up on saturday and it will be hot for father's day. that's when we're going to be back in the low 90's again as we head on into the weekend. so, today not as hot. we've had a boundary slip down to the south but the boundary will be a lurker and it will be around for most of the weekend and in fact saturday we believe it starts to cross us again which is why we'll start to see those temperatures and the humidity coming right back up. 84 in d.c., so pleasant right now. a check of temperatures around the region, low to mid 80's, a 90 at westminster but most everybody else is cooler. dewpoint temperatures in the 60, it's more reasonable, it's drier to the north. you've got a little bit more humidity to the south and west which is why we've seen the storm develop -- the storms develop out in that region but notice as i put this in motion for the last few hours that they fizzle as they hit the more stable air that is closer to most of our region. here's the setup for tomorrow afternoon. very pleasant high pressure

wisconsin here as a blimp caught fire and crashed this morning near the u.s. open golf tournament. fortunately the pilot of the blimp was able to parachute out before it hit the ground. he was air listed to the hospital with serious burns. officials say the blimp was shooting aerial footage of the golf tournament when it caught fire. no word yet on what sparked it. >> meantime police in spring, texas, seize more than a million dollars in meth candy. they found the drugs stuffed inside of a car while responding to a burglary. the estimated 600-pound of candy shaped like "star wars" characters butterflies and lolly pops. two suspects stole the drugs drs from a house used to make meth. hard to believe but safe track finally coming to an end the final surge starts this saturday. it's going to be the red line between shady grove and twinbrook

days. wamu transport paying reporter upon fox5 contributor martin dicaro joining us with more on this final leg of metro's effort to improve safety. seems just like yesterday when it all started, martin. >> yes, so safe track is over. happy birthday safe track, one year and that's it. but the work is really only just beginning in some respects. when we look back over the past year and ask what did safe track accomplish, metro did get a lot of work done. they aimed to get three years of track work squeezed into one year but they learned some hard lessons along the way and probably not even metro grasped the dimensions of just how much work is necessary to get this 40-year-old system back to a state of good repair. here's an example. at first metro was overlooking the interlocking tracks between the main line. east falls church there was a derail many of a silver line train. metro has learned how to do each of these projects better and now they'll be going back to the western end of the red line to do more rail

track infrastructure that they couldn't get done the first time around. >> so all these riders out here they've had to deal with all of this for a year. you depend on metro, it really threw a wrench into your plans but it is not going to be the same metro now like it was before safe track. >> that's true. one -- another thing that safe track accomplished good or bad is it changed the region's expectations at least for the foreseeable future of what we can expect from our transit system. again, it's a mature system and metro general manager paul wiedefeld is trying to put us on a footing that for the foreseeable future track work and safety is going to come ahead of service. we're a resilient bunch we commuters, we can temporarily adjust, we can telework, bicycle p-find ways to work around a two or three week disruption but it can't be on a permanent basis, right, and that is why post safe track metro is going to

you've seen that you've won and i just started laughing. i was like no. [laughter] so, it feels wonderful and i'm very, very grateful. >> and you are a music therapy major, correct? >> that's correct. >> so, tell me about your journey i guess in deciding to major in music therapy. give us a little bit of background on that. >> yeah, just a really brief background, i was involved in a car accident about four years ago and suffered a mild traumatic brain injury and my recovery was like in a great deal because i was a musician and i was encouraged to like basically participate in music to help myself regain, you know, cognitive abilities as well as the ability to play and sing again. and i was just so moved and amazed at how

recovered and that kind of like started me off on this exploration of like what can music do to help heel and just connect us with one another. >> right. and obviously you're so passionate about it given what you have gone through. you know, it's interesting to hear about beyoncé giving back in this way and, you know, a lot of other people out there might perhaps want to be able to take part in this scholarship. tell us what the application process is like. how did it go about? >> well, who knows what it will be like in the coming years but for us, we submitted a portfolio and then there was a short essay just asking about how lemonade inspired us and then from there, we were narrowed down and then a couple of days later literally i got the news. >> wow.
