up, tony. in factor everybody is filing out. i want to give you a look at the scoreboard, final score there the democrats did beat republicans 11 to two. so not exactly a close game. but the democrats handed over the big trophy to the republicans saying that they'd like it to sit in congressman sca lease's office until he recovers and then they want it back. it was a lot of fun, a very nice out here. there was a lot of support and county. they were handing out the baseball ones. the most popular one i am told was put out by steve sc a alie. brody logan talked with an intern for the lieu sans a congressional delegation who said they really do appreciate all the support they've been getting from people across the country. take a look at that. we've been hurt so closely by this.

with the whip and when we saw the on the tv it was so awful and so to see the country come together like this it's just incredible. just before the game law makers knelt in a circle no doubt reflecting on the alexandria shooting, many of them wear hats in honor of. a huge of applause when david bailey came out to throw out the first pitch. it was a ball signed by the victim matt micah as well. the crowd more than double than last year's attendance with more than 23,000 people on hand. security was extremely tight. there was a very large, visible capital police presents. many of them out with k9 units. ahead of the game we spoke with pennsylvania conscious man mike doyle and he said all the law

prince william county. dozens of warrants were issued for people distributing the drugs. of the 43 warrants issued, 31 people were arrested many of the take downs happened just 24 hours ago in prince william county. northern virginia is not the only area struggling curb opioid abuse. you can see the mug shots flashing behind me. we spoke with the agent in charge and he says the opioid epidemic is widespread. in 2015, we had 52,000 americans die from drug overdoses. 33,000 of those were due to prescription opioids. so you see the problem. and we have to educate our pharmacistses and dr.s who are here to treat pain they're trained to treat pain. th

have to break them from that mode, that cycle. >> dea special agent in charge carl colder says includes hosting prescription drug awires conferences for the medical comit community and going into medical schools to treat huh hur. q. s on the disainger of ear prescribing. just this month the dea ceased nearly 90 pouds of heroin in maryland. more than 630 pounds was pour fentanyl which is lethal. the mar cot iks task force which includes law enforcement agencies across the area have conducted five large scale operations all aimed at cracking down opioid offenders. it's resulted in more than 200 arrests but the dea says the focus is on education. well, first of all we now

realization that we can arrest our way out of this problem. so we now have to educate and one of the ways that dea is educating the public is through our operation prevention program which is a tool kit stem-based program for parents, teachers, students and school district. >> operation prevention includes taking that students on virt field trips where dea agents provide unfielded facts. it also includeses video challenge encouraging students to send a message by creating a 30 to 60 public service announcement with a chance to win up to $10,000 in column scholarships. teisha lies, fox5 local news. >> take a look at this disturbing picture from montgomery county where another noose has turned up. it was found hanging from a

morning in montgomery county. that's in the her on's cove condominium neighborhood. residents immediately called management and police cut it down. this incident comes after noozs were found at american university, the african-american museum and crofton middle school. they're asking anyone with information about the noose found in montgomery village to give them a call. still no word tonight on sparked a massive two alarm building in mt. airey, maryland. sky fox was over the scene. the blaze broke out in the 1,000 block of south main street around three this afternoon. firefighters from four different counties assisted in putting out the flames. it had a collapsed roof. fortunately no one was hurt. >> it was such a beautiful day out there as we take a live look at the capital right now. a little bit of a breeze, see the flag blowing there. are those

we are less than a month away present the fourth of july, although for most it's a time of celebration it also means stepped up patrols, on-call officers and specialized teams like k9 units. it's a security challenge law enforcement in zc including the metropolitan police officer. we're speaking with a veteran who is exposing safety issues he feels should have been addressed years ago. our marina maracco is live in northwest with this story that t you'll only see on fox5. >>reporter: tone initial sarah, this officer

on the line for the well-being of the safety of his k9, his mpdk9 reno and we just obtained a copy of an unfair practice complaint that was filed by the d.c. union against the metropolitan police definitely it's 67 pages long and it say, quote, the kept disis regarded findings and recommendations of the washington humane society as well as violated the labor agreement by unlaurelly changin& the working conditions of the k9 handlers and endangering the sits sebs of the district of columbia. right over my head. it's 87 pounds, brown and tan fur. reno is not just a german shepherd, he's part of family laying low and calms as everyone takes the spotlight the at home he rides in the

reno's spotlight is at work. he's a ten year veteran of the metropolitan police department as a patrol k9. he and his handler, detective paul huss letter ride into work together from their montgomery county home each and every day back in their personal car. there's always the potential for something to happen because the car has no safety fee whatsoever in it. the 30-mile trek into washington there'sly a stop or two to make. the at the gas station wet mercury peaks, the ignition turns off and the windowses crack just enough so the dog gets air, but the public is not in danger. it's unfortunate to say but they're going to get bitten by the dog and that's one of our main concerns is the safety of the public and these dogs and the officers who transport them back and and forth to work every day it's a reality that the department seems

than a decade huss letter says he drove his police cruiser to and from work, until 2010 when chief lanier decided to take the cars from us. >> why? >> no reason was ever given why our cars were taken from us. >> do you remember a tell type saying why? >> no, it was all verbal. a phone call was made and i came in one day and said you can't take car home. >> since 2010 huss letter has been fighting to drive his k9 cruiser home. >> we would make sure that the dog was safe. >> the doors flat. there is nothing on it. the dog can't open the door or put the window down by accident and everything is secured. it's all a crush resistant kennel all the way around. right, buddy? >> a hot dog system inside, which is temperature controlled by thi

the temperature in the car. lights will flash, the horn will blow, the windows will all thely go down and this fan will automatically turn objection to the form all of the windows have limousine tint to keep the uv rays out and keep the kennel cool. is this a one officer story? >> well? it sounds like it. in january the kept singled owlt five of the 26 total k9 officers prohibiting them from transporting them to and from work because of mileage restrictions measuring the distance from their residence to the us capital. 3.0104 says otherwise and so does this department memo from january of this year which documents all five officers live outside the 25-mile radius allow by mpd. we checked in virginia, arlington county police told

officers are exempt from their 40-mile restriction for two main reasons, one to safely transport to and from work, vet appointments and training and two so k9 can be rapidly dereplied and called back into service in the event of an emergency or critical incident. in maryland, prince george's county tells fox5 the department allows k9 officerses take their crewses home and ahows exceptions to the mileage. here in d.c. they have k9 handlers that live as far as large audience plate oh, maryland. they have no restrictions on their handlers to use the k9 outfitted vehicles for the safety, protection and comfort of both k9 and hand lemplet if i were to get into an accident on the way to work and become unconscious or unable to move, reno is trained to go under

we call hammer protection mode. so much so that a large part of their commute is not only a dangerous affair, but turns into a liability issue. probably te closest car i had with him was he almost bit the little girl who was handing me my coffee through the drive through wind on. i was very upset about it. i reported it and it seems to have fallen on dead ears because nothing was done about it. at the behest of the police department, they inspected detective huss letter's vehicle the use of a personally owned vehicle to transport a working dog police canine in professional opinion is a liability for the disdistrict dislike. i recommend avoiding the practice of kenneling the dogs and let the dogs be transported t

homes in properly equipped k9 vehicles. reno and huss letter continue to ride in their pry us. at home the department has already been out once this year to inspect reno's kennel. it's supposed to have a lock, a and i keep a bed in there for reno. there will be a second mandatory inspection to make sure the kennel meets all sanitary. >> my dog has defecated in my car. my dog has urinated in my car. my dog has vomited in my car and not to pension all the pet dander and hair that we accumulate in our povs. we're not compensated for cleaning our cars. we're not compensated for maintaining our cars. that all falls on us. for huss letter his worry is not what will happen, but when. he remembers

department respond td to fox5 in a statement by saying quote, mpdk9 officers can apply for a take home vehicle. these requests are evaluate odd a case by case. if a k9 officer is not authorized a take home vehicle they have the option to use the on site kennel to house their k9 overnight or take their k9 home and choose to take them home are provided with the appropriate equipment. we provide this to our officers to make sure our k9s are safe and treated appropriately. we'll be back after the break.

35 pounds and he's up foray doption by the humane rescue alliance. the staff there says that simba is bigger than a lion cub and would probably be much more comfortable obviously if he slimmed down a little bit. the poor thing. the staff tells us that this handsome little fellow would love to go home with someone who can continue his weight loss gurney. the adoption center release this video trying to work out but he didn't look too interested. that's okay because i don't look interested in working out too much of the time. if you'd like to adopt simba, go adopt simba. the news at 10:30 is next.

police say nine people were hurt after security hired to t accompany the turkish president during official business in washington, d.c. attacked them during a pieceful protest on may 16. two arrests were made that day, two more, including this man, shimon newer in of virginia were arrested wednesday. d.c. police now have 14 outstanding warrants most of them turkish citizens and two canadians. >> i run yops direction from my friends and some of the turkish body guard put me in a choke hold and he drug me on the ground and while he hurting me he was say you're gone and i'm going to kill you. turkish woman wanted her voice heard that day instead she says she forever lost her sense of security, but she is glad to see the man she

stayed out of the immediate area, but what we have been seeing in the hagerstown area we have some flash food up towards western pennsylvania. woodstock might be getting a little bit of action. this was a very slow moving and really drenching complex that has created a flood warning that will create a conflict until tomorrow at 4679 twenty-five. reasonable temperatures, another day in the 80s, but as this warm front gets closer, scattered showers and storms will develop in the afternoon and because it's still kind of humid and humidity will be on the rise as we go through the late day tomorrow we can't rule out slow moving and drenching thunderstorms. 10:00 tonight it's seeing some of that activity out to our north and west. as we go into eight in the morning, a lot of clouds around, not much in the way of shower activity. watch how it

afternoon. you begin to see more activity in higher elevatis out to the west. by 6:00 our futurecast suggesting some healthy rain, down powrks thunderstorms, lots of drenching rain potentially with that. at 8:00 we're still watching that cross 95 and continue to move east. by the time we get to saturday morning, a lot of clouds pretty much everything is gone and anything we see saturday should be less widely covered in terms of showers and storms. maybe a couple of spotty storms around saturday afternoon. can't rule out a couple thunderstorms but it shouldn't be like what we've just seen. father's day looking hot, we're thinking 92-degrees as we head into the weekend. spotty storms saturday, only isolatedded storms sunday, but humidity is back with us feeling like summer as we head on into the weekend. monday, more storms possible. we get a break from storms on tuesday and wednesday with temperatures back in the mid 8.
