all right everybody the question is is he or isn't he. the president tweeted that he was under investigation firing former fbi director james comey and lawyer is denying claims. >> first of all you now said he is being investigated. >> no. >> he's not being investigated. >> "fox news sunday" check rundown on the side of screen that's what we're talking about at 6:30. >> president trump latest tweet storm saying he is under investigation for obstruction he tweeted i'm being investigated for firing fbe director for the man that told me to fire fbi director which appears
6:31 pm
knowledge he's under investigation. in contradictory and tense appearance on "fox news sunday" as you saw the president lawyer said m mr. trump meant something e else. >> with no notification of any investigation nothing changed since james comey said the president will not be suck of investigation. >> he's being investigated for taking action that deputy attorney general recommended him to take by agency who recommended termination. >> what is question i mean you stated facts. fist of all you now said heeds being investigated after saying you didn't. >> no. >> you just said. >> no he's not being investigated. >> are you following all t this? does it appear to be unclear. everybody is confused right now. >> who is on first. let's bring in alex smith politics reporter business insider. >> thank you for having me on. >> thanks for joining us tonight. here's the question. seems like this whole mixed message goes back to the question and it's so -- it seems. >> absolutely
6:32 pm
look if you look at president trump's friday tweet he said clearly i am under investigation it didn't leave much for the mind outside of that and defense from trump legal team is well trump he didn't have enough character to explain what he meant. there's no tweet after that. it remains to be scene what else he could mean. that has not stopped trump attorney jay seculo from doing a full gauntlet on sunday show yesterday and insisting trump was not under investigation while telling fox's chris wallace actually he is under investigation and it was somewhat confusing explanation callly anne cnway echoed that today. so i still think we're left with a ton of questions on this. >> absolutely now this is put another twist on to things as we start week. you were writing as well that there's talk that rod rosen stein would possibly recuse
6:33 pm
minimumself he's talking about that possibility since he's the one assumed to be mentioned in that tweet from last week. where does that go from here and what could happen if he refuses himself in the investigation and what happens next. >> so if rosen stein accuses himself next in plain to takeover oversight of robert muller is rachel brand a career attorney held multiple jobs related to department of justice and she's currently third in command shows associate fern general working under george bush administering and worked in obama administration she has a reputation of conservative lawyer than rod rosen stein. she does not have experience as prosecutor or in criminal law that's not her background and she would be thrust into this roll instantly if rosen stein ever recuseed himself. she was the one that
6:34 pm
discussing a possible recuseal with. if he decides to take a step back from the whole russian matter like jeff sessions has then rachel will be thrust into the spotlight. >> do you think he's up to the task. there's talk that when if then the president would bant to most that have voiced out on her now that rosen stein recuseal caught attention they really say she is up to the task. >> again this is one of the top lawyers in the country and she's been serveing a long time in the department and she's been in private practice and she has a rally strong reputation and really that is the question that no one necessarily knows the answer to and that's if trump were to instruct her robert mueller
6:35 pm
to refuse that and would she refuse it and that's really something that i guess you could only know if she was tested. >> ellen the wuping one things that strikes me you have outside groups entering fray and running ad. we saw the ones against james comey before his testimony and there's a concerted effort to let be honest discredit robert mueller before his appointment was rashded as somebody very highly. somebody who served under two or three administrations. >> seexz at this point there's so many variables. >> and the ads you noted were from the same group running similar ads as james comey right before his testimony it's why do certain people want the investigation to be viewed in an ill legitimate way. president trump could be cleared by the entire investigation and if cleared by robert ul manyer that would be a great things
6:36 pm
and his res presence. >> would be huge. >> so the effort to make it seem ill legitimate doesn't make ses and newt gingrich has been pointing to a lot of things he doesn't like from mull erin hires and relationship with james comey and back-to-back fbi director and they have some type of relationship. >> sure. >> all right. >> so this effort to delegitimize muller has been somewhat cop fusing. >> alan smith with business insider. >> thanks, guys. >> absolutely. >> we have developing news out of london. we've been following this one. a large man plowed into a crowd of pedestrians killing one person and leaving several others injured. there's one person under arrest. >> it happened in one of the most diverse neighbors in london a van plowing into
6:37 pm
group of pedestrian early outside of a mosque and community center. one person is dead and almost a dozen other injured. police are calling it act of terror with muslims specifically said toing atarget aend praising leaders for keeping suspect adds hand until police arrived and took him into custody sdm citizens for that khunty made citizen arrest and stop and apprehended this man. >> coordinating with british counterpart looking for possible ties ininternational terrorism. nasal security council saying "the president counter terrorism advisor and other senior staff are tracking the defense incident in london. crime minister theresa may urging calm as well as tracking down on extremism following three attacks of the last three months. >> hatred and evil of this kind will never succeed. >> members of the local muslim communiy were in shock and urging police to investigate the attack as hate crime
6:38 pm
attack on all faith and communities. >> i feel targeteden and safe. i feel we should not be like this as a community. >> there's a number of uk muslim leaders saying to say hate crimes against muslim leaders call for extra se security. lrl you now to the latest in baseball feed. ambush shooting which cr critically wound louisiana kang gress man steve scalise. we have good news to pass along for you his condition up grided from critical to serious. and the house majority whip has been in the hospital now since gunman opened fire on republican congressional baseball time last week. scalise was one of five people shot at a team practice on wednesday and since then he has had several surgeries. the hospital said he is responsive and speaking with family. >> now at the scream ever the shooting in alexandria now you have to get things back to normal. that field is set to reopen tonight and mother nature had
6:39 pm
other ideas storms postponing first pitch. anjali hemphill is there tonight. anjali they are remembering what happened and honoring people there. >> yes they did earlier today, jim. you know, we found out last week that america's past time hasbility to bring together both democrats and republicans with that congressional baseball game and it's hope of alexandria city officials here that the sport of baseball will also bring together their community again and you can see behind me here on the field where games were supposed to be played today dugout and flowers as city officials hoped to reintroduce this baseball field and sports complex to thousands of kids who play on it every week and to reassure them this is a safe and happy place and however you can see the weather there making a mess out there. so that reopening ceremony for today was postponed due to the weather. but earlier today the city recognized many drove police fire and personnel that helped save lives
6:40 pm
under fire today at that press conference alexandria police released these pictures of three officers who were first on the scene putting their lives opt line running straight towards bull totes stop the shooter. james hochkinson the first two pictured there rookies officer nicole bataglia on the force for a year and a half and officer alexander jensen two years and finally officer kevin jobe veteran 16 years of force. police chief says all three officers were on scene within minutes of the first dispatched call. the chief says when officer bataglia arrived she ran towards gunfire and eventually became pinned having to take shelter which allowed other two officers jensen and jobe to move in while shooter attention was focused on bataglia the chief says while taking gunfire jobe and sent sent could neutralize the situation and the suspects went down all within less than five

dispatched call. other fire ems personnel were also thanked and recognized for quick and brave work treating injured. meanwhile, it's now almost a week since shooting and this del ray neighborhood and city of alexandria is very head to move on i've talked to each one of the officers several times it always starts with how are you doing. i mean one thing we went through is not something most people go through not in this business. we train for it all the time. they're done fine they're good officers and strong officers they made a good decision and i'm damn proud of them. >> to children annual fa falllies we're incredingly safe, peaceful city. that night we marched hundred of us marched down mount vernon avenue together as walk of solidarity. >> the reopening ceremony is
6:42 pm
scheduled for 6:00 tomorrow night i can also tell you that all three of those officers pictured there were not injured and all been placed on administrative leaf pending outcome of investigation which is standard pro dude sewer. that's the latest from alexandria, guys, sending it back to you. >> anjali, thank you very much. >> let's get a check of the weather and of course the baseball game you see was rained out. let's see ft. rain continues to dampen plans for the rest of the evening. here's caitlin. >> fact we're plague everything is awesome does not apply to what we saw today. >> it doesn't of the maybe a different song had to apply. everything will be awesome starting tomorrow. weather will be much improved. showers and thunderstorms this evening are ending as they move out from west to east and quieter tuesday and much more comfortable tuesday with less humidity and sunshine and nice warm weather. but we'll safe those 90s later this week they'll be back with humidity and thunderstorms khans. clearing here in the district. left youvr showers across northern virginia severe thundeto

president is focused on crisis in one latin america top oil producing country. >> at the same time the white house and first meeting of president technology council included heads of top companies like amazon, apple. microsoft. master card and intell. we talked about plans to upgrade it systems and president trump has met with more than 300 ceos since taking office. >> son-in-law and senior white house advisor jared kushner getting ready to head to middle east headed there to meet with israel prime minister and prim min steer of palestine in effort to strike a peace deal. >> trump unconventional leadership got him elected and some voters unhappy with the style. 64% of voters disapprove of job performance so far and same poll found 65% of americans think the president has little or no respect for the nation's democratic institutions and traditions.
6:47 pm
>> with polls he fweetd at a poll that said 50% approve of job. it always comes down to what polls work in favor regardless of the spectrum you're on. >> john bennett now white house correspondent from cq roll call to talk about this john. thanks for talking us with here. what do you make of disapproval numbers. is it something the president should be concerned about as jim mentioned you have other polls that say something quite the opposite. president and team pay attention to polls and up i don't think they're concerned yet but they're troubled at least by the trim line and even more than sgruingt you know we have seen uptic in if you look at disapproval
6:48 pm
voters without college degrees just since march the approval number dropped 8 percentage points 58% of white approved of trump job performance in march and it's now 50% that one poll and that is the thing that will get donald trump and breeb us and steve bannon's attention. and republicans came home so to speak and a lot voted for donald trump over hillary clinton. but it was a lot of white without college degrees and many whom voted for president obama twice who kind of burned donald trump over to the finish line so to speak. i think that's most alarming number inside that ap poll. >> when you mentioned that subset of voters that correlates with why the president won places like pennsylvania because he won a lot of counties around alleghany county pittsburgh which is always blue and all surrounding
6:49 pm
teetered back and form solid red this time. michigan. wisdom martin. so i mean that's would it be safe to say that's core constituency that's who you need to make happy? >> that is exactly right. we've seen last few weeks you know you called and talked about technology and i think these numbers gotta teption and what this means even in the white house and president themself as they often do they seasoned a message today and even the president himself step on these themes but what they're trying to do is refocus narrative and this is a narrative white house. they want to drive it and own it and sthaip. and so these theme weeks and theme days are trying to get back to exactly why we're referring to core constituency and trying to call them forgotten
6:50 pm
and all those states you listed and so they're trying to get back to talking about at tent answer and how the president will bring back jobs hard hit rust belt and former manufacturing areas and how they rebuild the infrastructure and how he refs up technology segment of economy. >> sure. >> things like that. they're trying to get back to agenda but finding it difficult because every day it's drip, drip, drip. >> investigation yeah. >> and including from the president himself. >> exactly. >> and worked against himself a little bit. >> thank you very much. >> thank you. >> thank you. >> all right. so we like hearing from you. >> yes. >> so do congress mep and that's why fox ronica cleary is up in rest ton tonight. hi ronica. >> jim, sarah, congressman conley start 7:00 and we'll chat with a handful of them giving you pulse of people coming up after the break.
