fox5. prince george's county public schools accused of boost ing grades for hundreds ever failing students. plus, severe storms rolled through the dmv leaving behind some damage tonight. is there more to come we'll tell you what to expect ahead in the full forecast. your news starts now. and thank you for joining us here at ten i'm sarah simmons in for shawn. and i'm tony perkins. tonight the cleanup is continuing from the damage that was caused by a tornado that hit silver springs fox5's marina maracco is live in sill silver springs with more on the damage that was suffered in the area tonight. marina, what's the latest? >>reporter: the national weather service confirmed it was in fact an ef0 tornado. they're not giving more specifics as to what exact lit path of the storm was or exactly what time this happened, an ef0 tornado in the small section

known as the north wood park neighborhood. you'll see behind me some pretty serious damage. t this was one of two homes in a was condemned here on dennis avenue. a roof caved in, a side wall appeared pierce to be off its foundation. two were transported out of an abundance to an area hospital. they're expected to be okay and they have since been release. if we can role some of the video here from this neighborhood you'll see the scene throughout this neighborhood, another house close by also condemned. the damage there severe enough that residents are out of a place tonight. at least a dozen cars damaged as well because of the dree brings that tore through this neighborhood because of the tornado touching down here. you'll hear from a neighborhood here. this is how she recounts that storm earlier this afternoon. all of sawedden i heard this loud wind and then over my head and our bedrooms are all on this side, i could hear

and i worried that these big trees were going to come through the roof one day. but i i believe they didn't. they just put branches all over the neighborhood and moved our tram trampoline in the backyard and wrapped it around a tree and somehow we're fine. we had a number of lightening strikes, at a restaurant in bethesda, a house in north toe potomac. i don't think we have any water rescues or anything like that. and you see here that crews continued to work and try and get some of this debris off the roads. montgomery county police still out here. they have shutdown some portion of the road. behind me you'll see some crews out here. power was out for a large portion of the afternoon and into the evening, but you'll see the lights have been restored in this neighborhood. the red cross also here helping the families that have been displaced tonight .

, marina maracco, fox5 local news. >> as marina just mentionedded those storms are now out of here torp. we should some sun breaking through the clouds, but again that late information that indeed we had a tornado touchdown if in montgomery county. caitlyn is here with the late e. >> that's right. tony and sarah , kind of surprising. we just got word from the weather service. there was in fact, a small, tornado nonetheless that touched down the four corners areas of montgomery county. this was around 36789. forty-five just as the storms were moving in earlier this afternoon. i was a surprise because we didn't have a tornado for the area although there were numerous severe thunderstorms storm warning all over today. it did cause a path of damage that while it only cut about two tenths of a mile it still caused damage as marina just showed us along with that tornado report there were several wind damage reports around the beltway

the district itself, many trees down, many roadblocks blocked, a the loft reports of power outage s and all of these storm reports that you're seeing on your screen right now extend out into parts of virginia, down by charlottesville, culpeper and a long the eastern shore. just about the whole area saw the severe thunderstorms earlier this afternoon and along with the wind a lot of rain, plenty of lightening and that has all greatly diminished by this hour storm tractor radar showing a few storms that have hung up. they're still seeing rain zoom in on charles and st. mary's. it's pretty much coming to an end. that should end within the next couple of hours. it is still very cloudy and very muggy out there. this front will eventually bring some cooler air for tomorrow. but it's still quite mild, p five in washington and the dewpoints are high making it preet high humid. p two in leonardto

dryer air will move in overnight prompting a much better tuesday forecast. we'll start off mild and partly sunny. 72-degrees. even though it will be 87 and sunny, very warm it won't be nearly as uncomfortable as the past few days. also much quieter. we don't have any storms in the forecast forth next forecast. >> sarah. this is the man police say murdered a 17 year old reston girl. his name is dar within torres and tonight we're learning new details about the suspect and the investigation. fox5's teisha lewis is live in fairfax county tonight with this story. teisha >>reporter: well, immigrations, customs and enforcement has filed a detainer tonight against the accused killer, 22 year old dar within torres who is likely here in the country illegally. now we do know that calls have been coming in to the fairfax county police

from across the globe inquiring about this tragedy that many initially thought was a hate crime. police say right now there's not enough evidence to support that even so 17 year old nabra hassan's father says his believes his daughter was target ed. >> do you still believe that was , in fact, a hate crime. >> it is what i believe. many people in the street, why here behind the muslim ladies. this lady, you know, she have i mean long dress and the clot for everybody know this kiddies muslim. >> we went back to this reston neighborhood that 17 year old na bra that sam i am kaild home. and spoke with his father. we're told hasn't slept since his daughter's death one he insists was motivated by hate for muslims, despite police indicating otherwise. you believe your daugh

meantime, the mosque that nabra attended before the incident say s that they plan to have a news conference sometime tomorrow. >> teisha lewis, fox5 local news >> tonight, friends and family are mourning the loss of otto warm beaker the 22 year old university of virginia student who was release by north kor rea in a coma died at an ohio hospital h this afternoon. last year warm beer was sentenced to 15 years in prison with hard laib o in north korea. doctors say he was returned with severe brain damage, but it wasn't clear what a caused it. his family he release a statement tonight. it said in part, quote , unfortunately the awful tornado watch just treatment our son received at the hands of the north koreans assured that no other outcome was possible beyond the sad one we experienced today. he was at piece. he was at home and we believe he could sense that. president trumpls

died at the scene. no one else was hurt. >> an attack outside a mosque in london is now being investigated as a terrorist attack and a hate crime. authorities say 47 year old darins on born was driving the van that plowed into pedestrians leaving a mosque and community center. the attack happened just after midnight leaving one person dead and the at least ten others injured. british police are now out in full force urging citizens to remain calm. >> it's a story you saw first on fox5, allegations of fraud from the top down at prince george's county schools all in an effort to boost graduation rates. several school board members have written a letter to the governor's office calling for a state investigation into the issue. and tonight we are talk ing to teachers and staff who say they've been told to push students through whether they earned their grades or the not. fox5's lindsay watts broke the story and joins you now with some new information tonht

county ceo says the board's members claims in their letter are politically motivated. since our story aired last night other board members have written their other letter, completely dismissing the claims of fraud. meanwhile teachers and parents we spoke to say there is a real problem in the school system and they want it exposed. the record high numbers have been reason to celebrate in prince george's county. music, pom-pom s and party buses earlier this year as school ceo dr. kevin maxwell made surprise stops t at high schools with graduation rates over 90 percent . when maxwell came up to our school with an entourage to celebrate our high graduation rates we all held with laughter because we knew that they were completely fraudulent. most of the counselors laugh at it because we know that it's not

teachers and guidance counselor we spoke to wanted their identities concealed for fear of retaliation. they work at different high schools, but tell the same story. they're banking everything on graduation rates and things of that nature. so there's incredible pressure coming from the central office onto all of the principals at all the schools to push kids through whether they've really earned the creditses or not. it comes down to the county, that comes down to the principals that come down to the staff. it's what do you want to do to make sure that they pass rather than what are you going to do to make sure they learn. boosting the graduation rate has been the top priority for dr. maxwell. prince george's county has been lagging behind before making major gains. there's a celebration going on in prince george's county. a rolling celebration across. along with the spike in graduates

s, students will get a minimum of 50 percent for making a good faith effort on an assign ment or assessment. as long as 50 percent of the work is done. it doesn't thattive to be correct. it just has to be complete which makes no sense. we're told that's just the beginning. either just out right change the grade. i've seen them just change the grade. >> this guidance counselor says her principal told her to contact the teachers of failing seniors. e-mail them all and tell them change all the grades whether it was a 30 or a 50, change it all to passing. fox5 obtained an e-mail from a guidance counselor and assistant principal at duval high school. blow, a list of our seniors who need one last intervention with your assistance. it goes onto ask for last minute rub the gene i in the bottle assistance. this was sent about a month

graduation rate for last year, 92.39 percent. one of the highest graduation rates in prince george's county. duval, one of the schools where dr. maxwell was celebrating the high graduation rate. >> my question is, how is this happening? it's also where this mom has an eleventh grader. she says she learned he was failing a class with a 29 percent p. she talked to the teacher. and she had nothing else to justify a higher grade. the guidance counselor for that grade said do not worry, he will pass with a 65. she says her son indeed passed the class and he's very aware of why. when i tried to challenge him and say you need to give more with thats say, you need to study a little bit more, what for they're going to pass me anyway, he's passing no problem. does he know the material? no idea. many i going to be tasked to teach him that over the summer, i've already begun that process.

dr. maxwell. he declined our request for an interview, but provided a statement. he called the board members' letter politically motivated and says these claims are an affront to the hard work of our teachers, administrators, students and parents over the last few years i categorically deny any systemm students who did not meet state graduation requirements. he go es onto say we welcome the maryland state department of education to fully explore this matter. >> we are confident that they won't find anything. school board chair salors gun u banks and ate other board members wrote their own letter saying they're shocked and dismayed by the allegations. the claim that folks out is false. if there is any clear and compelling evidence from legitimate authorities about this we're very anxious to see it. since they've written the letter, have you asked fosh the letter that thef \he\e '

>> we've gone to our administration to say we want to make sure that everything they've told us is correct and that there is absolutely no systemic corruption going on and we're confident that nel ' give us that information. >> i believe that we will be indicated in this. staff we talked to said to them it's not about politics, it's about their students and what's next for them when they leave high school . they're achieving students, they're not learning a good work ethic. they're pretty much led to believe that entitle ment is the norm, but it's not. if they go to college they're going to be in a great deficit because they didn't learn that content information. and so i feel like we're setting them up to fail. and gist another twist in the story, we found out today, the us department of education called for an investigation into claims teachers were being forced to change grades after an anonymous p

we've had a busy night tonight weather wise. we've had a lot of severe weather across the area earlier this afternoon. as we talked about at the beginning of the 10:30, the national weather service confirmed a tornado in the four corners of montgomery county around three: 45. if you live in that area just north of silver springs, the intersection of i believe edgewood avenue there was a small path, but a path nonetheless that was tornado watch naddic and caused some damage. our marina maracco has been out there all evening. thankfully it has much a quieter night. let's start off by this beautiful picture. it is a gorgeous sunset after such an active day. i swear you see the best sunsets after severe beater and this is certainly one of them with the beautiful oranges and tangerine colors, so a very nice quiet end to what was active monday and an active start to the

will be warm, but a lot less humid and a lot quieter. it still lit up with the remnants of the cold front that brought the strong thunderstorms to our area. a couple of showers actually with the front itself back across central pennsylvania . this will deliver us the cooler and dryer out. it's pretty humid. you can see a couple showers just east of morgantown. those will probably fall apart as they cross the mountains. skies will clear from west to east and we will get less humid. high temperatures before the storm, 789. ninety-one at bwi. it was very, very warm and temperatures while only in the 730s cooled off considerably behind those storms, but it's been pretty stable, 73 in baltimore, 73 gaithersburg, 73 out at dulles. fox futurecast we continue with the trend of storms pushing south and east out of our area waking up to bright sunshine tomorrow, a clear blue sky all day long. it
