>> happy tuesday, all poa lit liesed on georgia's six congressional district. voters will be deciding who will be representing them at congress in a special election and many see this raised as a predictor for the mid-term elections and also a referendum on the president's current performance. there is the run down for you, but this is the hottest story right now. republican karen handle and democratic john whose off run ning to replace john price who is now in the president's cabinet as head of health and human services. this house race has really become crucial to the point where now it's the most expensive in us history. this

sixth district. i've said that from day one in this raisin i will say it today. it's about who is best suited to represent the people of this district. i think this is an opportunity for georgia to elect some fresh red letter high pressure, focus on the people accountable to washington. brook got involved with the race. he sent out some tweets. he brings up the affordable care act and says it's time to vote republican. jos johns on hovnanian doesn't live in the district. his fiance or girlfriend is going to medical school so he hasn't moved into that district yet. but that has become a pretty big topic in this race, among other things. she is not a political newcomber in this race. she's -- well, this race, yes, but not a political newcomber. she's lost two other key races in the state and he is a political newcomber. it's already set up a big fight here we'll see the results. i think
6:32 pm
we're going to go past, may go late into the night. that's what a lot of observers were saying. a lot of people got into the act when they voted earlier. 134,000 people voted earlier. here is what people did say when they went to the polls this morning. >> i've been watching it very closely and was looking forward to today. i think it's important because this is a chance for us to be heard because you have someone that's not necessarily a career politics, but someone that is looking out for everyone. i think a lot of people are con fused about who the voters are, what we want and this is so important to kind of sway things in one way or another to make things happen in our area and to take things nationwide. it's pretty quut and dry here. i think it's hard to flip people's positions here. either can't stand trump and you wouldn't want anything to do with him or no matter what he does you're going to t support him no matter what. >> let's
6:33 pm
this race. hey, morris, how are you? >>reporter: i'm doing fine. there are two names on the ballot but arguably there are three people in this race. of course i'm talking about the overhang of president donald trump how much of this will turn out to be a trump factor or how much will turn out, as you said, this northern area suburbs of atlanta being reliably republican for a long time. this, in fact, was neut beginning riches old seat. >> i understand the weather down there has been pretty bad today and there's concern that it my may have impacted the number of folks who are heading out to the polls. we had a three-hour rain analysts are taking a look at this and saying if the elderly leaned toward karen handle, the republican and they didn't get out before the rain that may affect turn
6:34 pm
side,s on off says rain or no rain he has 12,000 volunteers. we've been out with some of them and they have yards showing which addresses to go knock on, which ones can be counted onto vote democrats. so we're watching the weather now at midafternoon the rain stopped. so the polls here are open until seven. there are a couple with a couple of irregularities or technical problems. they'll be open a half-hour later. but it's all about turn south. the last polls showed about 49/49 with that slim, very limb margin undecided. ever vote counts, no doubt before that. let me ask you one question about the tv ad s. there was a very controversial ad that hit the air linking johns on hovnanian supporters and saying they supported the shooting of republicans. that's not a hyper bli, that's
6:35 pm
is it just none stop for this race. >> it has been constant. as as hovnanian was asked about that ad yesterday he won't even get into politicizing what happened to lawmaker scalise. he will not even touch that. he says people do not want to have that kind of campaigning on the other side handle, disallow any message like that. but yes, the bottom line here is the folks here in georgia, they are going to be very happy in about a hour or so when you can figure the last ad will have run. >> morris digs thanks very much i know you're in a for a long night. >> let's bring in kelly jay terrence editing manager for the weekly report. thanks for having me. the president won this h district by o
6:36 pm
we have car in handle, johns on hovnanian, what is your report ing tell you so far about where people may be leaning. a republican has been holding this set for many, many years. h this is going to be an credibly close raisin as you noted your reporter could be in for a long night because it could be one of the nail by the ers that they have to count ever vote and re count. >> when tom priets who became health and human secretary, he won it by over 20 points. it's been a solid republican district for decades. neut beginning rich of course held this district at one point but trump only won it as you said just one percent. it's really a case of what kind of voters trump has appealed to and what kind of voters he's turned off. about the top 15 most educated congressional district in the united states democrats hold all about two or three of themnd
6:37 pm
suburban atlanta district highly educated and those were the voters -- some of the voters that trump most turned off. so it was already going to be a bit of an up hill battle l keeping the seat. both sides are doing their best because they're parties see it as a possible referendum and for shadowing of what the midterms will bring for us in 2018. when you talked about the kind of candidates and who they are appealing to, let's be honest donald trump ran because i wanted to drain the swamp. he was not a politician he was outside the establishment . it seems to be a different scenario because now you have car in handle who has been a bit of a fixture in politics. johns on hovnanian has never held office, but he has a lot of tv ads. does that lack of experience, does that work in his favor do you think this time around? >> i think it could go either way. if you think about it, yeah, he's
6:38 pm
opposed to car in handle who is 55. she of course has served in the state for many years already . think about it, look at his career. he's only 350, what has he done? well he served as a conscious l a aid for many years and then afterwards worked as a documentary film major and did some journalism. you may think here is this young guy new to politics, but at the same time most of his work has been spent in politics. it's hard to find complete outside ers to run for seats. that is one thing people are going to be looking at, the idea do we want to bring some fresh blood in s? as you mentioned, though he has the support of a lot of people present outside of state. this house race is going to be the most expensive h h in history. both candidates together and outside groups will have spent
6:39 pm
races you got a total spending of about three mivment and a lot of that money on both sides is coming from outside the state. >> kelly jane torns. thanks so much for coming in we appreciate ly appreciate it. a lot of our viewers are wondering why are we covering this. because this could be a midterm for the elections. alyssa milano suddenly is now into politics big time. do you know who your conscious man is out there. i think there's all this interest out there and i think sometimes the basic tenets, they look at the big picture not necessarily the fact that all politics are l local. let's talk about a story that we were following around 4:00 yesterday when it broke and now there is a lot of outrage breaking over the death of otto warm beer, the university of virginia who passinged away after days being release from north correspond re in a comb. he was sentenced to 15 years hard leabor for
6:40 pm
he had served 17 months before he was release last week. >> it's a total disgrace what happened to yot oh. that should never, ever be allow to happen and frankly if he were brought home sooner i think the result would have been a lot different he should have been a lot different. >> secretary of state rex tillerson is demanding the re lease of three other americans . his family release a statement saying \he\e he was at piece, he was at home and we believed he could sense that. the pamly expressed a loft frustration with the obama administration when he was first sentenced saying that the obama asked them not to be so critical upon their yitsism of north correspond roo a and donald trump joor talked about that earlier this week. republicans working to put their version of work r

of republicans are crafting the billion mostly in closed door sessions. democrats, no surprise here, are using tactics to slow down the work on this billion, however it did not stop mitchell mcdonnell. if this billion passes it would need to be reconciled with the house billion which you may recall just barely got the party line vote last week. caitlyn line is here to break down. hi,. >> hour are you. we really don't know what is in this billion and from all indications we may not know what's in h this billion for a good while, if ever. according to majority leader mitchell mcdonnell konl we'll actually see a discussion draft of the billion on thursday . that is subject to change between now and the vote, but we will see that first draft then. what, if anything, have you heard and then maybe you can talk a little bit more about this. we know there were several democrats who went to the congressional budget office today hoping to get their hands
6:42 pm
frustrated that they haven't been able to see what's in this billion that's being worked on behind closed doors. >> right. i think when they went to the congressional budget office they knew they weren't going to find a billion but i think the intent there was to race raisin tenth to the fact that we don't know what's in this billion. itself it's not public yet. a lot of republican members don't know what's in the billion and democrats definitely don't know. that was political theater at its finest when we saw that come together. as we move forward in this process here, there were seven years ago a lot of frustration by republicans when it came to the democrats crafting the affordable care act. mike expense was one of the ones say ing there were a lot of secretive talks that they weren't involved in. the frustration out there is quite evident, is there any possibility down the road that democrats might get involved in the process or are they going to stay on the outside. for now, while r
6:43 pm
about repeal of the affordable care act i don't think this is going to be something that democrats want to engage in. i think there are some scenarios tossed around more by punned dents and republicans themselves . that's what democrats have wanted all along for now i think it's just a republican endeavr. >> caitlyn yos yoas from action objection to the form. thanks for coming in. >> the democrats and the republicans are up there working on it, but the american people want to know what's it in. it affects all of us. the republican ceases on the opportunity, you have all these insurers pulling out of the afford kabl care changes. there's thissen r uncertainty we don't know what the healthcare is going to be a year, two years , three years. we have to see what's going to replace it. >> hopefully we'll keep you post ed as soon as we hear something. >> in the meantime let's talk about the forecast. it was hot, but not so bad

here's caitlyn roth. much nicer this afternoon after an incredible active monday with severe weather and a lot of heat and humidity. we saw the break today. the cold front came through earlier this morning, 88 was our high today. eighty-eight its what we'll do again tomorrow for wednesday. still low humidity, a lot of sunshine, it's a beautiful day as summer officially begins on tomplet by friday, the same thing more humidity and thunderstorms are likely. we have tropical storm cindy down in the golf. even though we're in the going to see any direct hit of a tropical storm it the moisture will come into play. this will be out of our area by sunday. and it looks really comfortable by next week, temperatures in the low eight 30s. >> thank you caitlyn. we're back with more, 5@6:30 back after the break.

its first press conference in ate days and sean spicer at the he am. fox5's ronica clear is is on capital hill tonight with the latest on some of the rumors that he may be looking for a different job. ronica, what's the deal? >>reporter: well, he didn't really entertain much of that today in the briefing. he said that, you know, they are certainly looking to fill the position of the communications director, but what i do have ready for you and what i want to talk about is the healthcare billion some more because we took to the streets for the pulse of the people to get you some reaction to what you guys just talked about with that journalist in the last block. let's first go to what people are saying on the streets with these closed door sessions that the senate republicans are having. take a listen. well, i hate to see anything totally behind closed doors, but i think there are issues that they need to clarify among themselves before they bring it out and show it to the rest of us. i think we all need to be involved in the decision. i tnk

like a traf sti just like everyone else going on today. the plight of the city and the state, the nation that we're in impeach, impeach, impeach. i think it's terrible. i think it's completely undemocratic and i think it's going to be a terrible result. i haven't really followed it that much but i think it should be open to the public. >> well, we took to twitter for t last 24 hours with the twitter poll, 30 percent of you said yes , we should keep the press away, 70 percent of you said no, make the process public. and then a lot of you weighed in on twitter with tweets about your reaction sort of explaining why you voted the way that you did. hopefully we have these tweets for you. one viewer wrote the democrats didn't do it openly and have no place whining when the republicans follow their lead as long as the aca gets wax ed i'm happy. i may be wrong , but the aca was passed

aim slr fashion. we have to pass it to see wait is kind of referencing the famous nancy pee lowe's i quote. now government is doing things behind closed doors. how is this making america great again? so really a divided point of conversation where people are, you know, not seeing eye to eye on whether or not should be done behind closed doors. to that first question as to sean spicer we'll just have to see what happens. back to you jim and sean. >> thank you very much. ronica we're back after this h.
