this is fox5 local news at ten. right now at ten, disturbing new details in the death of a muslim teenager from fairfax county. tonight why prosecutors say they're still looking at her death as a hate crime and not road rage. then faking the grade, claims of corruption at prince george's county schools. it's a story you saw first on fox5. turns out the

maryland already knew about the allegations. plus, a fox5 disleus exclusive. this isn't sunburn. a trip to the beach left this local boy scarred. the news at ten starts right now . we begin tonight with an update on the stunning allegations of fraud in prince george's county public schools. thanks for joining us, i'm shawn yancy and i'm tony perkins. board members claimed they have evidence that hundreds of students graduated without meeting state requirements and teachers told fox5 grades are being changed to make it happen turns out the state of maryland already investigated the issue earlier in the year and found nothing was wrong. tonight we're digging into that report and talking to school board members about what it means. lindsay watts broke the story and is following up for us tonight. lindsay. >>reporter: shawn and tony top brass in prince george's county say that report absolves them that it is now case closed. however, there are questions about how the investigation was conducted, who was interviewed

question now, will there be another investigation by the state with new evidence and whistleblowers coming to light? fighting back against corruption claims, prince george's county schools gave us this report. it says a year ago the us department of education got a whistleblower tip alleging the ceo of schools was forcing educators to change grades to boost the graduation rate. in december, a representative from the maryland state department of ed was sent to investigate. she met with ceo. q. kevin maxwell and says she asked h i am to identify others with whom she could talk to. in january she spent several hours interviewing maxwell and four others he brought in. none of them recalled any complaints that grades had been changed. the investigator says she found no wrongdoing and the case was closed. i think that prior investigation actually makes is worse because the superintendent

were under investigation for something so serious. david murray is one of four board members calling for the state to come back and investigate new claims of fraud and manipulation of student records. i heard it from people at all levels, from administrators to assistant principles to parents to the students themselves. dr. maxwell and the school board chair immediately fired back, denying the allegations. we trust and believe in our students and our staff and believe that when all is said and done we'll find out that the students who graduated did so because they worked hard and because they were supported bell by their administrators. the majority of the school board wrote this letter questioning the motive of their l colleagues in going directly to the state. a. it's just unfortunate that now it's outside the organization and we have to now spend time to reverse these allegations. it's just unfortunate. i know you said reverse the allegations, but

allegations? >> well, we, in the last year, m sde had a whistleblower call and they checked it out and they investigated. >> did they talk to teachers and guidance counselors and staff in that investigation. >> i believe they talked to the higher level staff members. >> district level staff, right. >> district level staff. >> murray says the response from the rest of the board speaks to why he wanted to go straight to the top. >> that rile, you know, gets back to the entire point which is i think we're more concerned with looking good than being good. they wrote their letter proclaiming innocence before any of the facts were out, before we heard from any whistleblowers, if we're having an open mind we should wait for the evidence to come out before we come to a conclusion. we reached out to the state department of ed ask ing about the prior investigation and whether they'll l

investigation. but for now the department is refusing comment. also not talking ceo dr. kevin maxwell. we've been requesting an interview with him since last week. govern ofer larry hoag oon is out of the country now but we are asking to talk to him when he's back. here's state senator anthony meus with more on what he wants to see happen. we have to begin to say we're going to bring people in even if we have to go as far as the justice department because education is a civil right and if we have to go to the justice department to say we're going to educate our children we're not simply going to push them through. if you're in the making it we're going to hold you back. >> also today a group of high school principals came out with their own letters saying ak accusations of fraud are insult ing to professionals who have dedicated themselves to educating students and their success. there is a public school board meeting in prince george's county on thursday. lindsay watts, fox5 loca

>> developing tonight there is new reaction from the familiar live a muslim teenager murdered in fairfax county. seventeen year old nabra hassan in's family held a press conference in reston to address the murder they're investigating the death as a case of road rage, but prosecutors say they still haven't ruled out a hate crime. we also learned nabra was assaulted not once, but twice and detectives are trying to determine if she was sexually assaulted before she was kill. this is the man who police say killed her. dar within torres is being held without bond. nabra's family says there is no room for gait and crime in their community. >> he is saying he wants the community to express love for one another regardless ofs ethnicity or race. he doesn't want any other family to suffer of losing their loved one. he wanted to make sure that we don't have this senseless crime committed again. he said that

of course to anyone and wants this to be prevented from happening to any other family. >> they're not investigating this as a hate crime and her family says they are happy with the police investigation. >> earlier tonight two non- profit groups held a vigil for nabra in dupont circle. dozens of people turned out to honor the teenager. even though her death is no longer being investigated as a hate crime it makes muslims target nationwide vigils for nabra are all over the cities. they are in read. many happened tonight but others are later in the week. we've posted all of these locations and times on our website, go to fox5dc.com to find them. meantime nabra's story has drawn national attention, the hashtag nabra, justice for nabra is now trending on social media. some posts include pictures of nabra or drawing of a woman wearing a raised tonight digs

a shooting that paralyzed the del ray neighborhood. five people were injured, including house majority whip steve scalise. i was kind of shock at first because just seven hours ago i was at the field, so it was kind of a place that i go to a lot. it was really surprising and surreal really to see that had happened. >> as prepared as we think we are you don't expect it to happen on the baseball field where your kids play all the time. and i think it does take away that comfort that they have of being here. it's very special to come to this event because it's showing that alexandria is not weak to these events happening. might canning is just eleven years old, but young and old aligning came for the reopening of the baseball field that has become symbolic for unity.

and everything was free. it's great to see a punch of people here even if they don't play baseball maybe if they are she not even from alexandria to come and show respect. i was laying down behind the dugout and had a big red shirt on and a red hat. i was an absolute sitting duck target. representative joe barton described the scene where a gunman opened fire on congressional members practicing baseball. now the crime scene tape is gone and baseball has returned and the scoreboard became a back drop for this new chapter in the the park's history. alexandria's first responders threw out the certify mean lal first pitch before a crowd filled with gratitude. the bottom line is i think the kids are ready to play. the community is ready to get it behind him and the ceremony tonight is this moved beyond what happened last week. and even though the crime scene tape is gone along with fbi and police investigato

are some signs of the tragedy that happened here like this bullet hole on the fence. even so the community says the message here tonight and today is about moving past this tragedy, rejecting hate together as one. teisha lewis, fox5 local news. >> new tonight, a federal judge approved a settlement in the wrongful death lawsuit stemming present michael brown's death. a white police officer shot and killed the unarmed black 18 year old in ferguson, missouri back in 2014. brown's parents sued the city, the former police chief and the former police officer who shot michael brown. details of the settlement were not disclosed. the shooting as you know led to months of unrest and protest in ferguson. also new tonight, oj simpson could soon be a freeman. the nevada parole official says simpson has a july 20 hearing that could have him release present prison the former football star has served more than eight years of a nine

was found guilty of armed robbery, kidnapping and other charges back in 2008. it comes from a confrontation of two sports memorabilias. >> a rare and dangerous heatwave is now gripping parts of the southwest. temperatures in arizona reached 119-degrees today. think about that. it was so hot american airplanes lines was forced to cancel flights in and out of phoenix. some planes can't take off in scorching conditions. the temperatures in phoenix are expected to whoever near 110- degrees for the rest of the week. well, we're not going to feel that kind of heat here in our area, but we should see some more sunshine tomorrow in what will officially be the first day of summer. caitlyn roth joins us with the forecast. today was beautiful p. it was perfect tony. we do a lot of heat around here. the hottest it's ever been in washington was 106- degrees. and

it's still so far away from 119- degrees. i hope we never do that in washington. i know, i know it's a dry heat and everything, but that's still very hot no matter what. we had a gorgeous afternoon with high temperatures in the upper 830s earlier today. much less humid from yesterday and days past. summer does begin in a couple hours one day or just two hours from daw 12:25 officially we begin the summer season. which means we get the most amount of daylight hours, nearly 15 hours of daylight tomorrow before we start to condense annulus give or take a minute each day. 78- degrees outside right now. it's still very mild, light south wind and temperatures falling back into the mid 70s. seventy-two frederick, 75 dulles and 66 in winchester. a little cooler up along the mountains. seventy-two in leonardtown. we did have a few showers that popped up north and east of washington aroun

pretty significant heat out there. so thunderstorms are probably likely by late in the day on friday as the cold front starts to come through. here's tropical storm cindy spinning out in the the golf just south of louisiana. winds are sustained at 45 miles an hour. this is expected to move due northward, make landfall as a tropical storm somewhere along the eastern texas western louisiana coastline early thursday morning. it will weaken pretty quickly to a tropical depression as it me and ders eastward along the coast. when these storms make landfall and they move over land they don't have anywhere to go they get picked up by the jet flow across the country and then just delivered wherever they're taken which looks northeast of there into our area. again for tonight 70-degrees, partly cloudy, it's mild but not muggy it's a beautiful start to your wednesday morning. a the look of sunshine for the drive in. more clouds mixed in later in the day,
