much for joining us i'm lauren demarco and i'm marina maracco. we start with a minimum wage o up date. mayor governor larry hogan is calling for state investigation into allegations of fraud and corruption in prince george's county schools. school board members, teachers and other staff have told fox5 that students' grades are being fixed and records manipulated to boost the graduation rate. reporter lindsay watts and john applegate broke this story. here's look at what they have uncovered so far. i think we're doing an unjustice to the student, allowing them to graduate when they know they didn't p put in the effort. the staff knows exactly what's happening. it's widespread. it's not just a handful of teachers. it's what are you going to do to make sure they're going to pass rather than what are you going to do to make sure they learn. some of our colleagues decided to go out so

and believe in our students and our staff. we would not make such allegations if there were not significant proof. have you asked for the evidence that they referenced. >> we have not asked them for any evidence. we have seen the fruits of our labor. some want to question or cast doubt on our students' accomplishments. when we lower the bar for some of our students we lower the bar for all of our students. there's incredible pressure coming from the central office onto all of the principals at all the schools. when i see, you know, laughing and partying and saying look at what we've done, 92 percent. i'm thinking of all the students who are now out there. there last been so systemic effort ordered by me or others acting on my behalf to inflate graduation rates. lindsay joins us now with more on these new developments

lindsay governor hogan demanding an investigation. >>reporter: that's right, lauren and marina, he sent a letter today to the state board of education. governor hogan says he is deeply troubled by the allegations of fraud and he wants immediate steps taken. after claims of corruption, governorror larry hogan says the state board of ed needs to take immediate steps to conduct a complete, thorough investigation . it comes one week after fox5 broke the story saying they have evidence hundreds of students have graduated without meeting state requirements. that there is systemic corruption from the top down. the head of schools, dr. kevin maxwell has strongly denied this, calling the claims politically motivated. governor hogan points out that the four board members rnlt the only electedded leaders coming forward, that state senator

he's heard testimony from teachers about alleged fraud. fox5 has spoken to numerous staff members, teachers, guidance counselors and record keepers who say they have seen for themselves, students are being pushed through who haven't earned their diploma. everyone has told us speaking publicly would put their job on the line hogan says he wants to get to the truth and also ensure that any and all whistle l blowers receive full protection under the law. dr. maxwell has refus ed repeated requests for an interview. he did give us this statement today. from the beginning i have maintained that politics lie at the root of these accusations. there has been no systemic effort to promote students who did not meet state graduation requirements. in order to inflate our graduation rates. we look forward to krob corroborating with the maryland state department of education to resolve this matter. tomorrow on fox5 news morning we are

story. you'll hear from state delegate jay walker about his concerns about a prior investigation done on this same issue. lindsay watts, fox5 local news. >> japanese airbag maker takata has declared bankruptcy. the company has been fighting off a series of lawsuits and recall costs from its defective airbags . they're to blame for at least 16 deaths and nearly 200 injuries. last february takata pleaded guilty to fraud and agreed to a 1 billion-dollar settlement. the lawyers agreed in suit that takata would have to be sold in order to fund the settlement. >> we are tracking metro and some good and bad news. the good news safetrack is on. the bad new, commuters will now be dealing with some fair hikes and service cuts. as of today, the cost of most metro rail fares will go up by ten to 25 cents. metro bus fairs will increase by a quarter. some bus routes with low ridership w

the impact of safetrack. still no word on what caused the massive apartment fire in northwest d.c. turns out that fire was deadly and this afternoon we've learned that firefighters pulled the body from a man on a third floor unit . kristin leone joins us from pee body street with more. >>reporter: >>reporter: screw crews are out here as we speak. we're actually at a vantage point the latest on the investigation being that the brod did i of a male victim was found inside this building here. i don't know how well you guys could see , i want to give you a better vantage point than we had earlier today. search dogs were dereplied to this billing and on the third floor they found the body of a male victim who has yet to be officially identified at this time. as far as the fire goes, the fire itself happened yesterday morning at around 3:00 in the afternoon. we're told about 200 people were

displaced, meaning they were forced out of their homes. maybors nearby say it took crews about 12 hours tooctly put out the fire. just to give you a better perspective of how fast that fire was burning crews also tell us that they had firefighters rotating in and out taking different shifts just because that fire was burning so quickly and they ait even jumped at one point from one side of the billioning to the other. i showed up that night, saturday morning they had people coming out the window. they had people in the hallway. they had people throughout the building. the first job was to do the rescue. once we did that the fire was ahead. now, again, this is a developing story. the body of a male victim has been found inside this building from that fire. the male victim has yet to be identified. of course once we learn more about that and get his identity we will let you know as well 678 as far as a cause goes, like you guys

mentioned there is no official cause at this time. investigat ors are working diligently to find out that for you. keep it right here on five , reporting live in northwest d.c., christine lee open, fox5 local news. it has been a heart breaking day for the james madison high school community in veen a, virginia. many of them learned this morning of their deloved varsity coach. he was killed afternoon in a crash near the mixing bowl he led the war talks to their best season last fall. some of the former and current players gathered on the campus to honor their coach. he was 352 years old. >> the search continues for a missing mother and her daughter in the district. twenty-five year old michelle manually and 21 month old daisy were last seen on june 15 but were only reported missing this weekend. they were last seen on the 1400 block of hol block northeast. if

this is fox5 local news at ten. now to the senate's controversial billion to repeal and replace obama care. senate says he wants members to vote on the legislation this week. right now mitchell ma konl doesn't have the votes to pass the billion and no democrats support the legislation and at least five republicans are also against it. we hear more now from fox's garrett tenney. >>reporter: senate majority leader mitchell ma konl has a lot of work ahead the next few days as he tries to correspond rol enough votes to pass the billion. five republicans said he can't support the current billion and other members

either way. one point of concern is the proposed cuts for funding on medicaid. on cbs's face the nation, if changes aren't made he's cassidy is no vote as well. there are things in this billion that that are peculiar to my state. a couple of things that i'm concerned about. if those can be addressed i will. if they can't be addressed i won't. one of the most out spoken krit is of the billion is rand paul much the current plan doesn't do what republicans aif been promising over the last eight years which is actually appealing obama care and addressing the underlying issues in healthcare. here he is on abc this week. they say they're going to bring down premiums i've been in medicine 20 year, i'm 54 years old, premiums have never done gone done.

show you the dewpoints because they're so low the dryer air has settled in and i know it's not making you sticking and un comfort uncomfortable like it has been. we had heat in deeses that were into numbers that we don't want to think b. that's not the case right now. the dryer air has moved in and it's very much in place and so it's comfortable. tonight in the overnight hours, clearing skies, a little columnar to the north and to the west where we're going to see our overnight lowe's into the mid 50s. winds picked up a little bit today. you might have felt it, they have now very much improved. winds are calm to about three to 8 miles per hour pretty much across the area. we're going to see calm winds for tomorrow and then they'll start toic p up once again. that's a good break for us. jet extreme is going to allow us to still get some

cynthia rand doll left her two year old daughter and 16 year old son inside a hot car. initially randolph told the police the two locked themselves in the ago. a few days ago she admitted she intentionally locked the kids in the car. she took a nap, smoked marijuana and before coming outside to the car . police in england arrested a woman after police say she loss control of her calf. it happened this morning as hundred s of people were celebrating the end of ram sedan done. our investigators are trying to find out exactly what has gone on, at this moment in mind it appears to be a real traffic collision that we're dealing with, but obviously the details of that will emerge over the coming hours and days. a total of six people

want to take a moment to apologize to all the great plays out there that just missed the top five over the last couple of years. last night i learned what heart break and disappoint those plays must feel every week when i lost my second straight nom ' award. brody, you were nominated. number five royals and pirates, base hit off the first base man's glove, slides and then a one hopper, the diving tag safes them, gets the out at home. look at this play, sliding into the outfield and then guns the runner at home. i like the play by the catcher, too. a nice team effort dive and then get him out. this kid thought he was slick. unsuspect ing pizza delivery man and he dumps on him. he drops all of his p pizzas.
