we'll have more thon just a moment. but it comes after school border members, teachers end on the staff told f f fox5 students beg fixed and records manipulated to boost the graduation rue rate. reporter lindsay what's broke this story. here's a look at what they've uncovered so far. >> to think we're doing an injustice to the students. >> allowing them to graduate when they know they didn't put in the effort. >> the staff knows exactly what's happening. it's widespread it's not just a handful of teachers. >> it's what are you going to do to make sure they pass? rather than what are you going to do to make sure that they learn? >> some of our colleagues de decided to go out -- so far outfield of our system and make some pretty outrageous allegations without going through a process. we trust and believe in our students and our staff. >> we would not make such allegations if there were

sufficient proof. >> have you asked for the evidence that they reference. >> we have not asked them for any evidence. >> we are finally seeing the fruits of our labor some want to question or cast doubt on our student's accomplishments. >> when we lower the bar for our students we lower the bar for all of our students. >> there's incredible pressure coming from the central office on to all of the principals at all the schools. >> when i see, you know, la laughing and partying and sa saying, gee, look at what we've done, nine 2%, what i'm thinking about all those students who are now out there. >> there's been no systemic effort ordered by me or others acting on my behalf to promote students in order to inflate graduation rates. now to major developments in the story fox5 was the first break. it was one week ago that our lindsay watts of course was first to report the claims of grade fixing at those prince george's county high schools. >> now maryland's gov more hogan is involved and in taking new action

melanie weren't like live in prnce george's with the latest information. mel? >> reporter: good morning. you may recall that governor hogan was out of the country last week when all of this was boiling over. he returned, took a look at some of those claims and requests given to them and indeed sent two letters out last night one to the maryland department of education requesting a complete thorough and exhaustive investigation. the other a response to the board members who brought this matter to his attention. reiterating the state's protection for whistleblowers. meanwhile, the school ceo a group of principles and majority of board members have called the accusations insulting and disparaging. three elected board members and the student member contacted hogan alleging that counselors and teachers were pressured to give passing grades to students who hadn't earned them it is a charge as you just saw that prince george's county school ceo dr. kevin maxwell has repeatedly denied.

dr. maxwell has also repeatedly denied requests for interviews with fox5, but did give us a statement last night saying "from the beginning, i have maintained that politics lie at the root of these accusations. again there's been no systemic evident to promote students who did not meet state graduation requirements in order to inflate our graduation rates ". maxwell continued, we look forward collaborating with the maryland state department of education to resolve this ma matter. maxwell does have the support of the majority of board members. those nine wrote their own letter to the state last week blasting the grade inflation claims and last night based on fox5's latest reporting on the governor calling for an investigation. the chair of the school board does yubanks wetted this. "what a shocker. republican governor who has cut million from prince george's county public schools joins those doubting our students achieve manies. there was a prior investigation of this complaint. it was done by the mar

that investigation found no wrongdoing. but the board members who are upset with these allegations say that that investigation didn't go far enough. it merely was glossing over the concerns and took dr. mack well's word and that of the people that he put forth nor the state to look at. also, this is caused a huge rift in the prince george's county school board. those nine board members who support the ceo did say in their letter that if these allegations turn out to be unfounded they want the three board members who sent that letter to publicly apologize and resign. live in prince george's county, i'm melanie alnwick, fox5 local news. we wanted to continue to dig deeper into the latest developments including concerns that previous investigation into grade fix walk not as complete as it could have been. that's one of the concerns of the entire prince george's county delegation in the general social security simply. they wrote to the superintendent citing

outside the supreme court because the justice cos announce a decision on the president's controversial travel ban. also questions about the court's future make up because there are reports that one of the justices could retire. and that announcement could come today or maybe not. let's find out more from bob barnard outside the high court. good morning, bob. >> reporter: hey, steve, good morning to you. this is poised to be big decision day here at the supreme court. the potential for two big stories as this term comes to an end today. as the cameras clicked away for their class photo earlier this month, there was justice anthony kennedy looking relaxed chatting with his fellow justices. but does he know something that we don't? is he stepping down? >> speculation swirling now after his clerk suddenly pushed up a reunion party over the weekend. the administration facing questions now about the possibility of another court vacancy but counselor to the president kellyanne conway wouldn't say much. >> has he said

plans? >> i will never reveal a conversation between a sitting justice and the president or the white house, but we're paying very close attention these last bit of decisions. >> justice kennedy is 80 on the court for almost 30 years. he is often the swing vote making his opinion critical. if he steps down, president trump will get to make a lasting imprint on the court after already selecting neal gorsuch shortly after taking office. >> it would be huge. it would really be a seismic shift for the supreme court. >> reporter: on the other hand, kennedy could easily stick around. either way, the other big news for the court this week may be its decision on the president's controversial temporary travel ban targeting a half dozen mostly muslim countries which the administration asking the court to overturn lower court decisions to put the ban on h hold. >> president trump has said if the court rules in his favor, reinstates the travel ban, he will he will put it in place win 72 hours, g

news at least 122 people made it safely to the shore from that boat. witnesses say none of the passengers were wearing live vests and that the ferry appeared to be overloaded. tourists were seen scrambling to get to upper decks in a bid to stay above the surface level as that boat plunged into the wa water. now to confidential calf where raging wildfire continues to burn. 750 acres are already torched from the fire burning in santa clarita. officials believe the blaze started during a traffic collision. hundreds of firefighters have been on the scene fighting the inferno. as of last night the fire was 50% contained. speaking of firefighter investigators are back on the scene of that deadly morning apartment fire on saturday. this was in northwest d.c. that broke out early very early in the morning. crews are still working to determine a cause. the fire chief says the body of a man was found in a third floor unit which is believed to be where the fire started. the victim has not yet been identified. more than 200 people were forced out of their homes.

windows of that apartment building to escape. japanese air bag maker takata declared bankruptcy much the company fighting off lawsuits and call recall costs from defective air bag. they're to blame for 16 deaths and nearly 200 injuries. last february they plead guilty to fraud and agreed to $1 billion settlement. the company's lawyers acknowledged in court that takata would have to be sold to fund the settlement. and finally, the foofighters performed over the weekend at the festival in the uk. there's a rule. no cuss words allowed. but let's just say they didn't quite follow that rule foofighters that is. and neither did adele last year. you may remember hearing this she dropped the f bomb 33 times during her performance. so this year's d.c.'s own dave grohl led the crowd in chant of the offending word. they sent the cuss word 34 ti times. we'll let you use your imagination as to what that sounded like. >>

shots. are you in car spinning like that is he shooting you? >> yup. >> that's sick. >> really? >> i mean, you know, there's a couple different ways of capturing that, you know, we had a specific rig that's call the biscuit which is very low platform essentially has four wheels, and you can put the driver's side either on the front, on the back on either side and drive the backwards or forwarded or said wise. sometimes we were on that for, for example, in the chase scene that goes out on the highway and turns around we were on the biscuit rig. very often we're just in the c car. and there's a camera, you know, whether it's an sell driver or whoever, jay our stunt driver, driving this thing with, you know, it's already off kilter because there's a giant camera rig on one side so it's hard enough to figure out where that is. it's an incredibly impressive think and high degree of difficulty because there's no green screen, it'

these handwritten journals that i did when i graduated from college starting in 1970. and chronicled the entire decade of the 70s and he was fascinated with that and he said man we got book. let's do it, and that's how it started and we went on from there. >> you went to journalism school, correct. >> i was a journalist. i always knew i would write a book i didn't know necessarily i would write a book about myself. but yeah. >> avid reader. >> i read all the time. >> i knew that about you as you're writing this book, how do you make sure that you're wr writing a great book one that an avid reader would want to read? >> how do you know you're writing a great song. >> that's great question. >> so i just -- i just went with my gut. if it felt right to me -- it was interesting. because i had never written book before. as i was writing, the beginning of the book i think i was writing kind of in very generic kind of, you know, just simple way, as the book progressed i began to get more descriptive and more really tried to not so mu

situation a little more int interesting and colorful. and so i had to go back and rewrite the beginning. so about halfway through the book i think i found my voice. >> yeah. >> then i went back and row krkraved the bing beginning and the book seemed to have -- >> let me ask you about the song then. when you write a song and you're looking and you want every song to be a great song, are you writing for you and from the heart for you or are you writing what you think somebody else wants to hear? >> i've learned over the years i do my best work when i write tour myself. thatters a lot of writer who's can tailor things for specific another artist perhaps or style. but not me. i just write the best song i can and the good ting about writing a song when you're done usually it doesn't take long. you can play it. play the for someone you get immediate feedback. when you writing a book, two years went by. i had no idea. i was -- high no idea if anyone was going to like it or how it was going to turn out. a little bit of different feeling. what do you learn about yourself when you go through the process of writing a memoir. what i

certain memories that came back. it was almost like regressive therapy. you go back in time and there were memories that came back and i realized had i not done this project i might not have never remembered this stuff for the rest of my life. >> it was hidden in there. >> right. >> with the book just curious one last question on it. from the 70' now, man, you talk about seasons of change. >> well -- yes. >> why do you laugh? >> i'm laughing because when i got to 400 pages, i realized even my mother doesn't want to read 400 pages about me. >> right. right. >> i never -- i actually never got to my move to nashville and basically last 17 years of my life which is i think pretty important as well. so i guess maybe there's a volume two. >> volume, too. >> we want to talk about music with you. it i want to go back to the beginning here. whenever we have a guest i like to do a little thing how accurate is your wick media. now the question i was going to ask you, is backed up in your book. i already know it's true i think

that you met your co-star was actually during a gang battle that broke out in philadelphia. is that true? >> we didn't meet during a gang battle. [ laughter ] >> we were at -- >> escaping. >> we were escaping from gang battle because it was a -- i'm going to show my age here by saying, it was a record hop which meant that a dj would have a teenaged dance, and spin records, kids would dance, but it was in a really bad neighborhood in philadelphia. where we were living at the time. darrell had group. he had a single out. i had a group, i had a single out. we were both invited to be at the same place the same time. we didn't know each other. we had heard each other's records on the radio. but didn't know each other, while we were waiting to go in the back room a fight broke out went went down the service elevator hey, man, cool, nice to meet you blah blah blah. >> i'm oates. >> i'm hall. >> become the best selling duo of all time. >> that's right. >> it starts today. >> i'm the short one that

hang out with for the next 50 years. >> wow. >> it is true. i thought i her this you all have actually never been build as hall and oates? >> that's true. if you look at everyone of our records it says darrell and john oates and now it seems like a subtle tee but it actually is we -- we conscious the did that because we wanted to be perceived as two individuals who could be individuals but yet still work together. that's what we've always done. >> does it annoy when people say hall and oates. >> no, because it's easier. [ laughter ] >> okay. >> let's talk about the music all that great music. just went across all races, all sexes all times and so time less today. where does that even come from when you're sitting down wawa what's the particular process to write a music song like sarah's smile? >> we started as song writers. we think of ourselves as song writers first and for most. so that's where everything begins. there's the old cliche, it all starts with a song.

[ laughter ] >> okay. >> all right. >> now you see where i'm going. >> gotcha. >> she's got that. >> i heard john you guys didn't really know how to categorize yourselves when you were starring out as to how what type of genre this music would be. >> fortunately for us we grew up and got started in music business at a time where you were allowed to make creative mistake. which i think is one of my biggest criticisms with the music business of today. there's no room for young ar artists to experiment and try things. and find themselves careen 88 tiff people have to find themselves. you have to. because if you don't make mistakes you'll never know re really what -- what you can be. >> you can't right a hit every time. but you always did. >> not really. it took us four albums before we got our first hit. >> do you have a favorite song? >> well, i like a lot them. but, i

because it was a sing that was written the first song that put us on the map. made people aware of us and of to this day we play it and it sounds as good today as it did 50 years in the industry you still get to do a tour like verizon center tonight. you're playing big venues. when you play all these songs and you see people of all ages out there and different generations that are singing along with you does it still touch you at some point when you're on the stage. it's amazing to me. it's amazing to me that if someone were told me in the early '70's when i was starting in 2017 we would be actually bigger than we've ever been in our career and have this incredible broad cross section of an audience from teenagers to people in their 50s up and 60's. so it's pretty incredible. i'm very proud of it, and very very grateful for it. >> it's pretty incredible you're sitting here on the couch with us which is why we're not letting him go. we'll have more with john oates when we come back. you're watching good day d.c. ♪

read into the opinion and basically what they're saying is, they will allow the travel ban to go into effect except in case where is people can prove they actually have a bonafide and that's the term they're using, bonafide relationship with someone in the united states. so if it's someone from one of these six countries including syria and iran and somalia, f you're there and you have relatives or someone you have a relationship with in this country, you can still come. but if you're from one of those six mostly muss little countries and you don't have a personal relationship with someone here in the united states, then the travel ban will impact you. and so that's the deal here, guys. it's actually a win in a sense for the trump administration saying the travel ban can go into effect except except for some cases and that they will review this when the supreme court reconvenes in objection. more to come.
