days after the deadly apartment fire in northeast d.c. forced two hurn people out. residents were allow back in today for the place they called home. thanks for joining us, everyone i'm shawn yancy and i'm tony perkins . today we also learned the identity of the victim who skyed in the fire. fox5's marina maracco is live in northwest with the latest. marina. >>reporter: that's right, since saturday morning once those residents were evacuated during the blaze this was the first time residents were let back into this building on pee body street in northwest. you'll see behind me that there is a chain link fence that has been placed around the building, special police making the rounds, making sure that people are kept outside this property while the fire remains under investigation . one neighbor we spoke with tonight shared this cellphone vi

he says the fire started in the unit on the front side of the building and then spread towards bask his billioning where his family lived. >> here's a first look inside the building. this man's unit damaged mainly by smoke and water. residents gathered here at their apartment imleks at roughly two this afternoon. they proved their residency here and then they were escorted to their units by building management. they were told they had ten minutes to try and grab whatever was salvageable, especially those small but very important items such as personal documents and passports. they did just that at roughly six this evening, special police and the city once again took control of this now vacant and now destroyed building on pee body street in northwest. fire crews we have seen them stop by sto check on the struck tumplet it appears no more hot spots here, but investigators believe the fire may have started on one of the third unit -- right here on the front side of the billioning behind this tree that y

here. we've learned also that fire investigators found the fatal unit. today that victim has been identified as 34 wreer old edwin romero. >> fox5 was the first to tell you about allegations of grade fixing and corruption to boost the graduation rates in prince george's county public schools. there have been new developments almost every day since. in fact , today there was another big one. the state voted to launch an outside independent investigation into the claims. fox5's lindsay watts joins us more on what h this means and also what's next. shawn, this is a big deal. a state school official told me today that he is not aware of any investigation like this that's happened before in the state of maryland. today the state board of education voted unanimously to higher third-party investigators to find out what's really happening. all in favor iefer. any opposed or object tensions. >> very good.

the board agreement that an impartial investigation is needed in prince george's county schools. just before the vote, we found out school ceo dr. kevin maxwell had joined the calls for an investigation writing a letter to the state superintendent. this letter is to serve as a formal request for a followup investigation by the maryland state department of education into allegations regarding the prince george's county county public schools high school graduation rates since my arrival. maxwell continues to deny the allegations brought forward by four school board member. they say they have evidence hundreds ever students have graduated without meeting state requirements, that there is grade fixing and records manipulation. i'm in favor of the investigation, but i do hope that it can be wrapped up very quickly. sarah leonard just graduated from prince george's county. she says she does have questions about how the number of graduates increased over the last few years. it's great that

did our reading scores go up? did our math scores go up? did our attendance go up or did it actually go down? while she say s she wants to get to the truth she feels this puts her own diploma in question. that's in the fair at all. all the people who graduated this year and years past who worked really , really hard to get the diplomas -- it's unknown when exactly the investigation will start. the state first has to go through a bidding process to higher an outside business. the president of the state board of education says getting this done quickly is a pry or. we want to spi disiet because there are so many questions about this and so much riez on it. he we want to do it prudently, thoughtfully and as quickly as we can. any sense of what this is going to look like. >> too soon to tell. we don't have any evidence yet. we're taking it very seriously so we want to talk to as many people to get to the bottom of it as quickly as we can. in

ceo dr. kevin max el he said he will fully cooperate with an investigation and make sure that employees feel they can freely come forward. tony. interesting developments there, thank you lindsay. tomorrow morning dr. kevin maxwell will be joining us to discuss the investigation into grade inflation. be sure to tune in to fox5 news morning. it's an interview that you won't want to miss. >> fox5 is in fairfax county tonight where police need your help identifying a man behind a disturbing attack on a man hold ing a baby. it happened last saturday at a gift shop inside fair oaks mall in fairfax . police say prior to the assault the suspect allegedly attempted to steel something from the store and was asked to leave. minutes later he returned to the store causing even more trouble. he kept say ing call mall security and then that's when i stepped in and asked him nicely to leave, please. and then he proceeded to call me names and my daughter names. and then he pulled out

called us names while he's recording. so i lightly pushed his phone out of my face and then that's, i guess his temper just got out of hand. the victim's wife is a manager in the store. fairfax county police say if you recognize the man give them a call at one-866- 411 tips. zc police want you to take a good look at this man. he is wanted for sexual assault assaulting a child. you saw it right there. it was caught on tape. the incident happened yesterday on north carolina avenue. the child wasn't seriously hurt. you saw the child walk in. he inappropriate touched the child if you recognize the man, call d.c. police. >> on the heels of a reported rape and brawl in recent months at a maryland high school, montgomery county board's of education voted to spend more than a million dollars to upgrade security at several high schools across the district. the increased security plan includes enhancements in the schools, security cameras and bathroom doors. fox5's

lewis joins us live from rocks ville with the story. teisha. >>reporter: and tony, rockville high school is behind me. that's where a student reported that she was raped after two students apparently followed her into a bathroom. now it all went down here even though the rape charges were eventually dropped. video of another student being beaten in the lobby of this school several day s later prompted parents to ask are our schools safe. both cases garnered national attention and highlighted some weaknesses that all agree exist across the district. we are going to spend $1.5 million on security improvements at various schools. just hoping we could get just a little update on what that money is going to be used for. sure. i think we informed the board about a month ago that we are in the process of conducting assessment of all of our high schools and that

completedded sometime in may. >> twenty-two high schools to be exact in montgomery county, including lockville high school will undergo massive security upgrades and the district is willing to put their money where their mouth is and pay $1.5 million to do it. the county's board of education unanimously approving the decision last night to spend the million plus dollars on security enhancements including walkie-talkies to insure security guards are better connected especially with outside police and also again the security cameras and also upgrading bathroom doors. the montgomery council made the rements to the board earlier this month after the reported rape and assaults at rockville high school in march. at the time a letter went home to parents about ways to improve school safety. what do you say to critics to say this is too little too late? >> it's a definite criticism and it's certainly something that

like this that sometimes highlight where some of our weaknesses are. the key is we want to respond adequately. certainly we're doing a lot but there's a lot more that can be done. i think we need to increase the school officers that we have in our schools. we also need to increase the school complement of school security that are in our schools as well and enhance some of our other school security measures. craig rice chairs the education committee. he says the county council alt kateed the money out of this year's budget. this security changes will take place this summer. that means it's happening right now. additional security personnel will be hired over the summer and in place for this fall. teisha lewis, fox5 local news. >> senate republicans pulled the plug on a possible healthcare vote today. the legislation was in serious jep disi, though, because five gop lawmakers announced this he would the not

22 million americans would lose coverage if the billion passed made things even worse. lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are concerned about the effect the billion would have on medicaid. majority leader mitchell mcconnell is optimistic they will come up with a stronger billion. legislation of this complexity almost always takes longer than anybody else would hope because we're going to press on. we think the status quos is unsustainable for all the obvious reasons we've discussed over and over and over again. president trump met with gop senators today. they are trying to work out a deal to pass the billion sometime next month. well, haryks targeted the second largest drug maker in the uf s. experts are in damage control mode worldwide. and paid to protest. the controversial work policies that allow some employees time off to take action. >> we'll be

think some of you may experience maybe a little rain shower today . i didn't see or feel anything out there. when i was coming in there were a couple of drops falling here at the station, but mostly it was a beautiful day, sue. i thinks that he's all we got here in northwest d.c., tone initial shawn just a couple of drops. south of town there were a few showers, but they moved through pretty quickly and they're pretty much out of here now. we need to enjoy this gorgeous evening. i'll show you the temperatures in a moment. first i'll look at the highs today because even these were a bargain. we topped out at 82- degrees at reagan national. the big bonus continues to be the lack of humidity and even though we had a couple of showers around and maybe even a couple of thunderstorms today the humidity stayed low. it was a disturbance in the upper atmosphere with some cooler air aloft that created the showers that were mainly south of d.c. and widely scalterred. our current temperature 73-degrees, but check out gaithersburg at 64 . winchester 64. many more places in the

were in the 630s last night. we're headed for the 50s again overnight. part of the reason these very low dewpoints. look at all the dewpoints in the 40s just a couple weeks ago we had trop column humidity with diseu points in the 730s. as mentioned a few storms just pass ed to our south. you can see that there's still a few pushing off the coast near salsbury and maybe one lonely shower still hanging around in st. mary's county all of that coming from a system up to our north. that has now pushed on through and bottom line overnight look at these temperatures. we're headed for the 50s. maybe even some upper 40s out there. a cool start and a wonderful wednesday ahead. we'll talk more about what you can expect for wednesday and beyond as things are about to get a whole lot who ther after tomorrow. >> thank you very much. computer experts around the globe are trying to find a quick fix to the latest cyber attack. the ransom wear attack started this morning and it's believed the attack began in ukraine. a number of the country's computer

computers at the chernobyl nuclear power plant. it quickly spread around the globe. america confirms it was hit. so was a health system in pennsylvania. experts say these attacks will happen again and it's important for governments and companies to be ready. we are all targets and is that the reality of the world, 2017. we should all treat everything we do online or on our computers as an activity in public. >> today's ransom wear attack was similar to another global attack launched last month. >> the supreme court cleared the way fr a limited version of president trump's travel ban to go in affect later this week. the justices do plan to take up the controversial case next fall . before they do, though, a growing number of house republicans are calling on route ginsberg to recuse herself. she criticized the

find the people who vandalized graves in a historic maryland cemetery. the ten:30 stashtsz now starts now. thanks for being here with us i'm sarah simmons. i'm tony perkins. jim has the night off. up first montgomery county schools beefing up security. they're adding $1.5 million for improvements. tush a lewis is live with more details. >>reporter: rockville high school here in montgomery county one of 232 high schools across the county set to see the enhanced security measures on the heels of some incidents here at rockville high school we're talking about the reported rape that eventually was dropped and also a pair of assaults that happened at this school. now the security measures will include security cameras, bathroom doors, additional security personnel for a price tag of $1.5 million. and now to the district where the victim killed in an apartment fire has now been identif

displaced residents were allow back inside the building briefly today. marina maracco is live with more. marina. >>reporter: that's right, they were allow back in at about 12 this afternoon right here at this pee pee body street individual building. this was cellphone video shot by one of the residents. although his apartment was not ravaged by the flames it did sustain significant water and smoke damage. he says today other residents were allow ten minutes inside where they were told to try and salvage their most important personal belongings and tonight police have identif ied the only fatal victim as 34 year old edwin romero. >> and senate republicans pulled the plug on a possible healthcare vote today. they planned to vote on the billion after the july 4 recess. senate democrats and some republicans expressed reservations about the billion's impact. particularly on medicaid. the president also met with gop leaders earlier today to see what needs to be

next month. well, a few of you saw showers today. most did not . sue palka is here to bring us up to date on the forecast. and it's a nice one. tony and sarah, the weather tonight, the temperatures so comfortable we did have a couple of showers around earlier. those have all diminished and gone away and the scattered showers were mainly south of d.c. your big headline for tomorrow, wednesday, looks absolutely award winning. for starters we'll be looking at another cool night, 40s and 50s overnight. those 40s would be pretty far to the west and then get ready for the hot stuff to come back. it begins on thursday. we should hit 90- degrees on thursday. we're up and over 90 even as we head through the for it of july. a heatwave about to begin and we'll hold it off for one more day. fourth of july right now we'd say forecast looking pretty good better than last year. it will be hotter, near 930. a few thunderstorms possible in the afternoon but it doesn't look like a washout.

temperatures at 10:00. unbelievably uncomfortable. sixty-four for gaithersburg, 70 for manassas. more with your seven day forecast and a look at the weekend in just a couple of minutes. sarah. new tonight, the house is putting more money towards security after the shooting at a congressional baseball practice in alexandria earlier this month. house majority whip steve scalise is still in the hospital following the shooting. the extra money will come in the form of a $25,000 alowrns for lawmakers to take additional security steps. the additional funding went through the house by unanimous vote. the stipend comes on top of office allowances averaging 1.3 million for travel, staff salaries and other expenses. the us navy is paying tribute to the seven salors who died when their destroyer crashed nearly two weeks ago. more than 2,000 salors and their families attend ed the ceremony today. naich i personnel lined the stres

a report on human trafficking is front and center at the state department. tonight, the findings are raising some eyebrows. fox's steve rap port explains. regrettably our challenge is enormous. today globally it's estimated that there are 20 million victims of human trafficking. so

>> the state department relesion its annual report on human traffickerring and downgrading \china\china's ranking putting it on the lowest tier along with north korea sympathomimetic bab way and syria. china was downgraded to stage three in part because it has not taken serious steps to end trafficking . china's rank came as a surprise. which has generally avoided direct public criticism of beijing on the issue. we have to continue work ing with all governments that are ranked in the report and sometimes there is initial displeasure with that ranking. however, the report is seen worldwide as a factual and accurate analysis of what's going on. >> ivanka trump was also on hand for the announcement stressing her father's commitment to human rights. over the past several months the white house has host ed roundtables and listening

sessions with victims. this is much more than a policy priority . it is a klehr on called to action. tillerson went onto say america is not blameless in the situation. american consumers and business must also recognize they may have an unit withing connection to human traffickerring. supply chains supplying products that americans enjoyed may be utiliz ing forced labor. >> fox5 in prince george's county now, that's where police are trying to fieg out who vandalized a cemetery in upper marlboro. take a look at pictures here. detectives believe this cemetery along st. thomas church road was vandaliz ed friday night. the vandals knocked over two dozen headstones soming back to the 1800s mple it belongs to st. thomas episcopal church. it's recognized nationally. if you know anything about the vandalism please give police a call. >> we turn to montgomery county

where police are warning residents about a gold scam. we told but this story a few weeks back. now police say they've received another report about two men selling fake gold and they seem to be targeting people who are chinese. the first victim told police they gave the suspects $20,000 in exchange for gold which later turned out to be fake. the second incident happened earlier this month at a resident in gaithersburg. the two men were spotted talking to a woman about the gold. fortunately she figured out it was a scam before she handed over any money. >> they speak mandarin. they target other individuals of chinese descent. it's a way for them to be close to the victim and say we have something in common. you're from china, i'm from china. i'm just a construction worker. i need help exchanging this gold i found into money so i can take it back to my framly. >> currently there is a warrant out for these suspects' arrest.
