changes. nothing too extreme here. more summertime or more summery or summer like as we get into thursday and into the weekend as we'll start to heat back up in the 90s. yeah today low to mid 80s and close to perfect afternoon. all right. here's a look at regional temperatures, again, overnight we were back in the 50s. now 70 at reagan national. most of our region remains in the upper 50s and low 60s. not only nice here in washington but really up and down the eastern seaboard up towards new york and boston. down towards atlanta. very quiet. look at that satellite/radar. what's happening? high pressure pattern has been unusual for the last couple of days. had big dip in the jet stream that's allowed very refreshing air in here that will continue for one more day. as we get into tonight and tomorrow high pressure that's overhead current loll slip off and as our winds start to shift out of the south and south and west we start to get bermuda high building back we'll back back temperatures as well. there's your seven day. definitely want to get out enjoy beautiful after into. wednesday afternoon forecast 83, sunshine today. beautiful

i'll show you the seven day again in just a few minutes. >> thanks tucker. 9:03. our big story amtrak service between d.c. and philadelphia remains suspended after two people were hit and killed on the tracks near union station overnight. the victims were csx employees. they were hit just before midnight along the 1200 block of new york avenue in northeast. we have team coverage of this story. krysten leone at union station tracking the impact this is having on train service but we weren't to start with melanie alnwick with the latest from the investigation. mel? >> reporter: good morning, guys. we're seeing acela express rain coming through very very slowly on these tracks so at least that one particular track has been cleared by investigators but clearly you can also there there's still many, many investigators here on the scene on that parallel track that the csx48 train was on. so we had two trains next to

each other the amtrak train was passing by and cxs train for some reason was stopped on the tracks. were don't know if that was a planned stop or an incidental stop but for some reason two crew members of the csx train were on the tracks. they are not track workers. they are train 48 crew members. so we don't know why at this point they were on the tracks. whether that amtrak train should have known or expected anyone to be on the tracks at that time. it was about 11:18 last night when the amtrak train passed by struck those two employees and killed them. passengers on the train tweeted out at the time that they didn't notice anything unusual about the trip from boston to new york -- i'm sorry boston to union station. literally three minutes away from union station when they say they felt a bump and the train screeched to a

the conductor then explaining to everyone that had hit something and then later coming on and saying they had struck a pedestrian and that people had been killed and asking them please for patience. so it was several hours there on the train before those passengers, 121 of them, could be off loaded and then the train was here on the track again for much longer after that throughout much of the morning. we do know that ntsb lead investigator jim south wick is here. he has been a figure in many of these incidents. we've had investigated in d.c. before. train crashes as well as that metro accident the red line accident years ago as well. so he's well known here in the d.c. area. a lot of experience on these things, but he's going to take this very methodically trying to figure out exactly what happened, and really we're not getting any more else from ntsb or csx at this point except they both say they're very, very saddened b

circumstances involving these train employees. live here on the scene i'll melanie alnwick fox5 local news. back to you. >> thank you very much. so that's as far as the investigation right now. let's fine out more about the passenger impact. kristin leone live at union good morning, krysten. >> reporter: good morning, steve. the big story here whether or not people can board on time from here washington to philadelphia. the northeast corridor on amtrak. we're seeing the result here. if you can take look at this line. a lot of people changing gates. so a gate change was just announced not too long ago about five minutes ago. and we went along with them. everyone hustling down here to make sure that they either board or in this case if they're waiting for people to come from, you know, the philly area, waiting for those passengers to get off but as of right now you're seeing them all wait in line to board on the train. now we're told that it should depart in about 15 to 20 minutes. it's saying on the mes

9:20 right now.amant to catch this train lot of people we were talking to today telling us that they're hoping to again make their way to the number of pits stops along the northeast corridor which include new york and boston in this case a lot of people heading to hammel ton they're telling us. they do not want to miss this train but as of right now the good news here it look like it's going to be boarding. passengers will be boarding on this train at some point this morning. also according to amtrak officials they say that the majority of lines affected as well as the local lines here camden and penn lines as well they should be reopening if not experiencing some slight delays but again this is what we're seeing right now. joining me now, too, she's -- i mentioned passengers waiting to to go see hamilton. you are adamant miss catherine to go and make if are i don't daughter's birthday. >> surprised by daughter for 16th birthday for her and her friend to see hamilton when i woke up this morning and had an alert on my phone that amtrak was going to be delayed, i h

rise car sales flip your thinking about buying your next vehicle. ♪♪ we are back now at 9:15. this morning, prince george's county schools ceo dr. kevin maxwell speaking to fox5 in depth for the first time since we broke the news of claims of grade fixing to boost graduation rates. >> the exclusive the view comes as the maryland state board of education has approved hiring of outside investigators to look into those claims. i spoke with dr. maxwell earlier this morning and i started the interview by asking him point blank if he believed there was any concerted effort for grade fixing in the county. here's what he had to say about that and more

>> these accusations that there's systemic corruption at the highest levels of this school system are completely and utterly false. >> the reason that you've gone on board with the investigation is what? >> to make sure we put this to rest once and for all. these allegations were first alleged about a year ago earlier in the school year, and we're investigated by the maryland state department of education, and both msd and the united states department of education cleared us of neocon concerns whatsoever and closed the matter. that these four board members have reopened it is sad. >> so why do you think, dr. maxwell, then, that this continues to be there, continues to fester, continues to be brought to the forefront if previous investigation as you say cleared the school district? >> you'll have to accident people that are bringing these allegations about system corruption because they're just not true. >> i do want to ask you about

few specifics though because when you dig deeper here and you look at rep reports coming from some of the schools i'll say cross land high school for an example. when you look at the 2015-16 school year you had below average schools in al before he gentleman and common core issues and math issues. lower than average attendance not just the state of maryland but other schools in prince george's county yet you have above average attendance. so how can these factors be one in the same where you have lower test scores but higher -- higher graduation rates? >> well, i would say, look, the work about graduation rates is about multiple path ways prone vieding children with other students, additional opportunities to improve their scores. that work is done nationally by district. it's done across the state. there have been other studies and reports about this work. it's nothing that is different than what people are doing anywhere else. and the reality is, if we give those students the

encompass learning at quarterly learning modules if we allow them to have the opportunities and multiple ways to get where they kneeing to more children will be successful and the fact that there's good attendance and the scores are lagging is exactly why we put this work into place. >> i do want to ask you this because one of the things that i think stands out to us and i understand where you're putting the attention on those four school bore members we've heard from state delegates, not just the school board but state delegates in prince george's county in maryland, prince county officials even the governor saying, look, they're may not be fire but there's smoke at this point. that we should be looking into. and they're hearing from it different sources that things may be going on. so why are all these different people now saying that there might be at least something to investigate in prince george's county schools? >> they're saying there may be something to investigate, because people like the four board members who sent the letter to the governor, that's why the governor is involved,

the governor, and they're involved because people are saying it is there. if people keep saying it, then, people want to investigate it. i don't disagree with investigating because again i want did resolve this matter. there's no systemic corruption. there's nothing for me or anyone who is on my direct team that is telling people they should do anything illegal. >> he kept reiterating that point. i asked him if it was, f it came back and the investigation showed there was wrongdoing would he resign at that point and he said it will not come back that way. so he was very clear in his stance. it is unclear when that investigation will start. dr. maxwell does say he will fully cooperate. he wants this to go through. we can tell you the state board of education president tells us they also want this to happen soon. the state has to first go through a bidding process to hire an outside business so it could take some time. but at this point all sides at least say bring it on. let's do this. let's take look at it. >> to his credit i'm glad he finaly did talk to us. at least it shows there's some level of transparency there and he's not -- he maintains

now new report says our pets are following in our footsteps. ban field pet hospital released their annual state of pet health report which found that one out of three pets who visited their facilities were either overweight or obese. they collected data from two and a half million dogs and 500,000 cats from across the country last year. and although this may be a alarming there are some things you can do to help combat pet obesity this morning ban field pet hospital chief of staff dr. alexandra is here to talk about the study and she'll show things we can do to keep our pets from either getting overweight or what we could do to get them back in shape if they -- thank you for coming. >> thank you for having me. >> were you surprised at the results of this study or not. >> i'm not actually very surprised. how does washington our area in particular compare with like the national average? >> so we're ranked 38th obesity for dogs and 36th for cats does we're doing okay. we could be better.

>> but we can be worse, right? what do you think the problem is what is this stemming from? >> we think it's a multitude of factors. i believe that it would be lifestyle, habits, genetics, and then what we accept as normal form for ourselves is becoming the norm for cats and dogs their waistline isn't necessarily where it should be. >> you're saying heavier people usually have heavier dogs? >> no, i think it's more accepted to have heavier pets at this point. >> i see. we don't want to do any body shaming when it comes to dogs, right. that seems to be a big thing just accept them as they are. tucker did make a good point. we said it too when we saw the picture of the bulldog there. there are certain dogs that have stocky eighty three build than others. how do you know what is the right weight for your dog? >> well, it's not necessarily just about the weight. we very much go by body configuration so first what i like to do i like to look at a dog or cat and he is specially from like a birds eye point of view. i look down and see if they have a nice waist. you don't w

i look to see if there's tummy p to it. i feel they're chest to see if i can feel their ribs. if you can feel their ribs relatively easily that's a good sign. you of course don't see want to see that ribs may indicate they're not properly nourish. >> right. >> you definitely want to see an hour glass like figure on your dog or your cat. >> when you see one or three or overweight or owe obes how much are you talking about? >> that's a hard thing to say, because even 1 pound in dog can mean a ton. so when you have a small chihuahua a pound a big deal. >> sure. above a bull mastiff maybe knowledge it's all relative. here we are. we have our dog, and the vet tells us they're overweight and what do we need to do? >> well, first thing you start with the vet. we're here for you and your pet. we're your best friend for your pet. so we can help you design a diet for your dog. there are prescription diets that we can use. we can count how many calories your pets need in a day. i always recommend that we go ahead and measure the food that we feed our

toe you're not exercising your dog in the heat of the day especially during the summer in d.c. for your cats their things like lease sure dogs, lease sure pointers you can use indoor to increase their exercise. you can get them moving -- use balls that distribute the kibbles so the cats and dogs can play. >> do you suggest putting the food out for your dog or cat like one time a day at a certain time or can you leave it out and let them graze all day? is there pros and cons to either of those? >> absolutely depends on the dog breed. the species. certain breeds of dogs you want do feed throughout the day they don't take one big meal. other problems that happen if you eat too much too quickly. for cats it's very dependent on grazing for some of them. some of them are raised with just individual meals. so sometimes it depends how you raised them. but i definitely recommend multiple meals if any did for dogs. >> how much does the fault lie in our screen time? like we're sitting and we're on our
