graduation grades >> the hiring of outside investigators to look into the claims. >> maxwell spoke with steve chenevey this morning and started asking him by point-blank if he believed there was any concerted effort for grade fixing in the county. here's his answer to that and more >> these accusation that is there are systemic corruption are completely and utterly false. the reason you gone on board with the investigation is what? >> to make sure we put this to rest once and for all. these allegations were first alleged about a year ago earlier in the school year and we're investigated by the state department of education, and both msde and the united states department of education cleared us of any concerns whatsoever and closed the matter. these four four members have reopened it is add. >> why do you think, dr. maxwell, that this

be there, continues to fester and be brought to the forefront if a previous investigation, as you say cleared the school district >> you have to ask the people that are bringing these allegations about systemic corruption. they're just not true. >> reporter: i want to ask you a few specifics. because when you dig deeper and look at reports, i'll take carlson high school for example, when you look at the 15, 2016 school year, you had below average score in algebra, math issues, you had lower than average attendance, not just the state but other schools in prince george's county. yet you have above average attendance, how can these factors be one in same where you have lower test scores but higher graduation rates? >> well, i would say, look, the work of our graduation rates is about multiple pathways and providing children with

improve their scores. that work is done nationally by districts. it's done across this state. there have been other studies and reports about this work. it's nothing that is different than what people are doing anywhere else. and the reality is, if we give those students the opportunities of campus learning and quarterly learning modules, allow them to have the multiple ways to get where they need to go. more children will be successful and fact that there's good attendance and the scores are lagging is exactly why we put this work into place. >> i want to ask you this, one of the things that i think stands out to us -- and i understand where you're putting the attention on the four school board members but we heard from state delegates, not just, in prince george's county in maryland, even the governor saying there may not be fire but there's smoke at this point, this is something we should be looking into and hearing it from different sources that things may be going

why are all these different people now saying that there might be at least something to investigate in prince george's county schools? >> they're saying that there may be something to investigate because people like the four board members who sent a letter to the governor, that's why the governor is involve, because they sent a letter to the governor. they're involved because people are saying, people keep saying it, people want to investigate it. i don't disagree with investigating. there's no systemic corruption, nothing from me or anyone who is on my direct team that is telling people that they should do anything illegal. >> the ceo there, prince prince george's county schools. it's unclear when the investigation is going to start, but dr. maxwell says he will fully cooperate. >> the school board of education tells fox 5 they want to get the investigation underway as soon as possible, but the first step for the state is to initiate a bidding process in order to hire an outside company to leave that

. this is fox 5 local news at 5:00. a look now at some our top stories, police are investigating a homicide in the district. officials say a man was shot and killed in the 1300 block of trinidad avenue northeast. it happened just before 8:00 this morning. investigators are still trying to figure out who did this, and what the motive was. take good look at this video. this is surveillance video released by dc police asking for your help in identifying two people of interest in

robbery. it happened monday afternoon in the 5400 block of georgia northwest. a $10,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and if you know something, call police. in prince george's county, police are looking for the man in this surveillance video on your screen wanted in connection of an arm robbery in a convenience store in upper marlboro. police say the suspects and accomplices are linked to three additional robberies. the accomplices believe to be the get away driver. > . the day after republican revolt crashed the senate healthcare bill. a new state report is painting a disturbing picture to the commonwealth. >> and this comes as anti-trump tried to rally republicans looking for plan b. tom fitzgerald is live in resolve land where the state is warning of a big hit. >> reporter: there's a new report by the virginia department of medical assistance. that is located down

richmond. they had originally studied the house version of the obamacare replacement plan by the republican, which passed. they found in that bill, that virginia would lose they said $708 million. they've been crunching numbers on the senate versions, the version which now has the vote postponed. what they found is opening eyes tonight in the commonwealth. they're looking at 1.4 billion dollars in losses if the current senate version of the obamacare replacement goes forward. all the while at the white house, president trump trying to rally his troops, and rally republicans to come up with what he calls a better plan. >> obamacare is dying. it's essentially dead. it's been a headache for everybody. a nightmare for many and we're looking at a healthcare that woul

our country, healthcare that will take care of people finally for the right reasons and also at the right cost. >> reporter: in virginia, the commonwealth would be affected differently by any changes in obamacare. here's why. virginia and 18 other states when obamacare was created decided not to set up a state exchange. people in virginia who want to buy plans through obamacare, they go through the federal system, that would mean they would immediately feel any impact of these changes, republicans say because virginia did in the expand the medicaid rule that people on medicaid that would not have massive losses of people because they didn't add masses numbers of people when it was created. democrats are saying it's different b

they're saying they're going to have an impact of state budget, impact on critical care and long-term care and in the end, congressional democrats tonight are asking republicans to now with this senate version stalled, come to the democrats and work together and fix the things that are wrong with obamacare that both sides do agree on. >> we have a lot of people who signed up for the exchange. sole proprietorships, small businesses that could not access healthcare before. in my district, i'm number one in the state for people in that category, who will lose their health insurance >> where virginia is really at risk is with all the hospitals. we have rural hospitals through the south side, southwest, that are really in danger of closing when they don't get the money. states like indiana, wisconsin, aetna pulled out of those states, concerns across the country, other

involving la kwon mcdonald. he was shot 16 times by a white police officer in 2014. it alleges one current and two former officers tried to cover up and falsely report what happened. >> this indictment alleges that these defendants lied about what occurred during a police involved shooting in order to prevent independent criminal investigators from learning the truth >> that's the special prosecutor. she says the officers failed to interview specific witnesses and that they lied or provided false information on official forms. the fraternal order of police declined to comment. two more men have been arrested in new orleans after a brutal beating and robbery of tourists in the french quarter. showing one of the men punching a victim leaving him face down on the sidewalk motion less. the victims were in new orleans for a religious meeting. one of the victims is

temperatures. here's what i'm talking about with plenty of heat. 89 in st. louis, witchita 94, am residual low 95, we know all about how hot the desert southwest has been. las vegas 104, phoenix 103 and that's the kind of heat that will be tapped and begin to develops a high pressure moves off the coast and the south winds starts sending the temperatures northward. at the moment, 82, it's pretty close to the high for the day, down one from our high of 83 degrees lots of places, still in the 70's, very comfortable low humidity. we'll head for 66 in the district tonight. some spots may still get into the upper 50's, we'll still be comfortable but i don't think we're going to go see those low 50's or maybe the upper 40's. there were a few of those around yesterday. so tomorrow, 90. it could be hotter if you get away from reagan national airport. a south wind usually reflect as little bit of the potomac but i believe some places could be above 90. a hot breezy day, but humidity not terrible just yet. but great
