fairly dry now. one area is moving to the northeast but back down to the southwest there's already more showers, a couple thunderstorms firing up and moving in our direction. so, we're in a lull now but i do believe as we start getting into the later evening hours, there's a good possibility that that next batch is going to start moving on across from the southwest. so we'll keep an eye on it and really that's the reason why all that was extended. storm tracker radar showed some very heavy rain. to the south of us southern maryland four to 5-inches of rain. i'll show you rainfall totals in just a bit. guys back to you. >> over the last few days six people have been killed in prince george's county and it all started when a man was murdered on the beltway last saturday. >> it's an unusual spike in violent crime that has residents looking for answers and the chief of police came out today to explain what he thinks may be behind the crimes. fox5's paul wagner joins us live from police headquarters in palmer park tonight with more.

hey, paul. >> reporter: well, marina and jim the chief brought a lot of reporters today to let them know exactly what he believes might be behind all of this. he said of the seven murders that have occurred since saturday, six have a nexus of people who know each other with longstanding disputes. he said two cases should be closed very soon and two others appear to be self-defense. >> what we have seen is atypical for our community in the present context. we've seen a spate of homicides in all save one and that may be the case with that one which is the unfortunate incident on the beltway, these are interpersonal disputes in the majority of these cases these are longstanding, the people are familiar with one another. >> just after 1 o'clock this morning, police found two men in their late 20's suffering from gunshot wounds in the parking l o

springs apartment complex in district heights. both men were pronounced dead on the scene. the motive is unclear but the chief says in all of the seven murders since saturday, six involve people who knew each other. on saturday afternoon, police say two men broke into a home on lusby's lane in brandywine where there was a shootout. one of the assailants was killed and police say the homeowner was justified in using deadly force. last saturday night on the beltway the chief says investigators still are not certain why adr a adriano lombrs shot inside his car. >> we have other leads outside that of information that we believe will lead to a conclusion in this matter. it is a difficult case. we have been using license plate

dionay was murdered. police arrested and charged a suspect in connection with the homicide. detectives say they used this surveillance video to help them identify terrell gibson as the suspect. they secured a warrant and then arrested him at his home. the 21-year-old now faces murder assault and reckless endangerment charges. police say smith was found shot to death sunday night inside his apartment in west baltimore. the motive for the homicide still unclear. >> in the district tonight a rare show of emotion from d.c. mayor muriel bowser and the topic, the district's efforts to end homelessness. fox5's bob barnard tells us the mayor broke ground today in the first of a series of smaller neighborhood shelters planned for all eight wards of the city. >> reporter: it was a ceremonial ground breaking in a pouring rain. d.c. mayor muriel bowser following through on her five year plan to prevent and end homelessness in the nation's capitol. turning this old

halt the execution of a death row mate in richmond. william morva set to be executed for the killing of derrick mcfarland and eric sutphin. the deputy's daughter is urging governor terry mcauliffe to stop the execution. sutphin says she's against the death penalty and the deputy's mother doesn't wants the governor to intervene. today the governor released a statement that says in part after careful consideration there was not sufficient cause to overturn the sentence. mcauliffe added though he personally opposes the death penalty he took an oath to uphold the law. >> and a mother in georgia in custody after police found her husband and four children stabbed to death. authorities believe all four children killed are under 10 years old. another child was also injured and remains in serious condition. police issued a statement calling the children's mother a suspect in their deaths but no charges have been filed. the motive still unclear. >> new developments in the case of that nyp

gunned down in the bronx. we are learning now that just hours before alexander bonds shot officer mee familia. girlfriend said her boyfriend was acting in a mon nick state. he wet to a psychiatrist and told him cops made him nervous. he had been on bipolar medication. new york across the state ordering flags to be flown at half-staff for officer familia. flags will stay at half-staff until her burial. >> septa transit police officer being hailed a hero after helping to pull a man out of a burning car. you can see that dramatic rescue right there on your screen from a officer's police dashcam. video shows the officer struggling to pull the unconscious victim out of the car, then a passerby there jumps in to help and both managed to pull the victim to safety moments before the car goes up in flames. the incident happened last

investigators say the driver crashed into the back of a garbage truck which trapped the driver inside. no word on the extent of his injuries. >> ♪ >> all right. trending tonight a woman from hawaii says she was forced to hold her two-year-old son on her happen for three and a half hours on a flight from houston to boston, a united employee gave up the toddler's purchased seat to a standby passenger. she says she paid for two tickets because children over the age of two are required to have their own seats. a flight attendant saw the toddler in the seat but decided to take the seat back in order to accommodate the standby passenger. united says the seating mixup was caused when the child's ticket was incorrectly scanned at the gate. they apologized to the mother and refunded the boy's thousand dollars ticket. >> so, the question tonight is what are your rights when you will fly? can you stand your ground? keep your seat or are the airlines out of line when they try bump you in the first place. >> tom fitzgerald is live at reagan nat

how likely is it will we see something actually get done? >> reporter: well, that's a big question, marina, jim. in 2017 members of congress have been flooded with these kinds of complaints from passengers across the country. that only gets more so when one of these viral incidents again catches flame on social media. now, there is already a bill introduced by a republican from florida, congressman neal dunn, his bill would prohibit any airline from taking a passenger off the plane if the passenger has already paid for that seat and has already boarded the aircraft. you know who doesn't like the bill? the airlines. they have serious questions about all of this but both the passengers and the airline are now locked into this struggle over what is right and who has the right to do what. join and us now is the executive director of the national association of airline passengers. this is doug kerr. doug joins us t

department of transportation. they say there are rights passengers have. are those enforceable and what are they? >> well, first of all you have a right to the seat that you've paid for, that's number one and if you're going to be bumped from a plane you're entitled to compensation and the airlines are required to ask for volunteers before they bump anyone. they just simply cannot pick you out of the crowd and say well we're going to bump you and especially with regard to united airlines bumping a child is the last thing they want to do on their -- and it says so in their contract of carriage. this incident that happened here should not have happened. if the employees had simply followed their own rules, there would have been no problem. >> reporter: one of the that when you look at these is- rules that dot has, they are really kind of left up to the airlines to decide how to enforce them and when they enforce them, so have we gotten a situation right now that we're putting somebody in charge of policing themselves? >> to a limited exten

difficult task for them to do. they know who's going to board the airplane before they even open the door to the plane, they've got all the people there, everybody's checked in so that there's not a difficulty involved here. they know who's going to sit where and they know how much time they have to do it. >> reporter: you know, as we look around this terminal one thing you see at every one of these fliers, no matter who they are, is that they've got a cell phone on them and that cell phone has a camera. there's been a lot of talk about whether or not we're seeing an increase in this type of conflict of people being pulled off or whether this is precipitated by the fact that we now have the ability to record it in our seats. what's your take on this? are we seeing more of this or has this been going on all along and now we have the ability to view it. >> that's exactly right. this has been going on for a long time. now we're able to see what people have talked about before and what people have experienced going back as i understand it at least 20 or 30 years, that this sort of thing has gone on but we see more of it now not just because we have

but because the flights are full and it happens more often. >> reporter: what needs to happen? we have had these calls for congressional involvement, more rules, more laws. laws. happen. >> i think it's more likely to happen becaus this is an issue that democrats and republicans can agree on. if you run a business and the airlines are a business, you need to run it i it in a busines like fashion where people pay for what they get and they get what they pay for and anything other than than that is not business like and it's not something that should be allowed. >> reporter: doug kerr executive director of the national airline passenger association we and appreciate you for talking about this. we reached out to the airlines as well, too, to ask them about this. they declined our request for an on camera interview. they did send us this statement, though, today. we'll tell you what they said in part. airlines take our commitment to customer service seriously proactively and voluntarily work to deliver the travel experience that passengers expect when they fly t incidentally we'll tell you a lot of those members of congress ty'

don't think -- i don't think i'm sure for it. so there's an obstacle course. any kid can come out here. you come through limbo then there's the rings of fire which are hula hoops, tomato sack race then a jump rope competition going on now. doing pretty well. and then on through resistance bands, there's yoga inside and this whole initiative is put on by ronald mcdonald house charities. i'm going to bring in karen torres of ronald mcdonald house charities who is putting on this event. so, why fitness with the circus and how did this all come together? >> well, we think it's a perfect fit. we were so happy that the universoul circus invited us here to showcase our newest ronald mcdonald care mobile that focuses on fitness, fun and teaching, nutrition and exercise for successful students and what a better venue than a fun family eventful of these professional athletes doing amazing stunts. >> reporter: and can anyone come out here and

>> ♪ >> this is fox5 local news at 5:00. >> all right here's a look at our headlines at the half. first up d.c. police investigating an officer-involved shooting, it happened last night in the 700 block of park road northwest. that's in the petworth neighborhood. officers say they came across kenneth burly who was holding a gun. officers then opened fire on burly after he ignored their commands to drop the weapon. the suspect fled the scene but was quickly apprehended. burly was taken to the hospital

nonlife-threatening injuries. he now faces assault and gun charges. >> and also in the district, a dorm evacuated over at american university this afternoon after a hazmat incident. this is over in the 3500 block of nebraska avenue. the high level of fumes apparently due to crews power washing in the basement garage. no one there was hurt. >> take a good look at this surveillance video just released by d.c. police. investigators need your help identifying this person of interest. police say he's wanted in connection with theft and credit card incident that happened back in march in the 500 block of eighth street southeast. if you recognize that man, call police. >> and in maryland, dirt bike shops on edge after a string of thefts. on monday a man was arrested and charged with trespassing after trying to break into clinton cycles. then in howard county ellicott motorsports targeted twice within two weeks in april. the suspects made off with five bikes the first time, another five the second time. police

press conference in poland when the president was with the president of poland and there it did open for just a few questions. when someone from the american press asked the president about whether or not he acknowledges if russia meddled in our election the president said that while he does, he also points to other countries that may have meddled and individuals who may have meddled and said that it is likely been going on for some time. and at the end of the day he put the blame squarely on barack obama when it comes to the 2016 meddling by vladimir putin. take a listen. >> he was told in early august by presumably the cia that russia was trying get involved or meddling pretty strongly with the election. he did nothing about it. the reason is he thought hillary was going to win. and if he thought i was going to win he would have done plenty about it. so, that's the real question is why did

can the president solve chicago's gun crime problem. this is gianno caldwell a republican strategist and chicago native. when you see all this going on, what goes through your mind? >> i think it's necessary, you know, trump said during the election that chicago had become a war zone. i happen to agree with that premise for a couple different reasons. me being a resident that was born and raised in chicago i saw violence on a daily basis but as of recently it devastated my family. memorial day weekend my my younger sibling was in the car with two of his friends on the south side of chicago when two young men walked up to the car and riddled it with 25 bullets. my younger brother thankfully lived through the ordeal but his best friend died in his apps. we had to get him out of chicago and move him to california. this is a very troublely time for chicago and the officials there, i'm talking about the mayor who in 2011 ran on the prem this m us that he was going to stop the violence

clearly failed, rare rahm emanuel that is. >> how do politicians change the mind-set? how do they get people away from this mind-set that violence is the answer? is it a political answer? do you go -- do you enlist the communities, teachers, community leaders? who holds the bag. >> it's obviously a holistic approach. it will take some funding, education is obviously a big part of it jobs training all those kind of things and when this happened to my younger brother i went to the white house immediately and i told president trump's senior staff that he has to keep his commitment which was if chicago doesn't fix the carnage i'll send in the feds so we saw last week he sent in the feds but this is a multi prong strategy. this isn't just let's put in law enforcement and see what happens. this is, you know, we got to do something about job training, we got to do something about education, about a number of different things because chicago's leaders have effectively proven that they failed at battling this crisis and i don't see how people like rahm emanuel could choose to even run for reelection when he's failed chicago's most

vulnerable citizens. >> and he's been re-elected once already. >> he's been re-elected once already. i'll tell you this. you know when people said trump shouldn't say they should send in the feds and the national guards and all these different things people have said well rahm emanuel was elected in 2011n2010 there were two state representatives, one leshawn ford and the other jay frece who was a state rep, he's now moved on but these were both democrats and they requested the national guard to come into town. >> rahm emanuel welcomed federal help, he didn't want the national guard per se because i figure if you're a leader and you have the national guard rolling into your city the optics of that and politicians look at that all the time, but is this a good step adding this assistant, this task force is that a good step. >> i may not be inkind that support the national guard at this point but however this is a good first step.& there are a number of other steps that must be taken to stem a very systemic issue. i got to say and this is very much the folks in chicago know is

though in my personal opinion that he cares about the black population that are really suffering through this systemic violence. his concern is mostly been about the sanctuary city and protecting illegal immigrants and i think that that's problematic on many levels and for folks who are in that city, they should take note to what he's doing on his lack of concern for their issues. >> i know the president's made quite a issue of this, you know, and this is a man who the president is a businessman has made investments in chicago so he has a vested interest, doesn't live there but he has a hotel there, some other investments. is the president -- you know, what do you want to see happen next? is there going to be a next step? will this address the problem or what do you want to see the president do. >> jim, i don't think that any of his properties that he divested from is of concern just because they're there. i know there's people that would make that consideration. >> i'm only pointing it out because this is a city that he had glowing words about, he loved chicago back in 2004 that's one of the reasons he invested. it's not a political point i'm trying to make just to be clear. >> okay. i thi

it won't take much more rain to provide some flooding out there so we'll just watch that over the next few hours. 78 at 7 o'clock, 7:79 o'clock and 11 o'clock we're staying in the 70's. i'm going to keep chance of lane in right through the evening hours overnight, too t less humid by saturday. we'll finally get all this yuck out of here. the front will clear, the area will be in the 80's, in the 80's, 90's and by saturday afternoon the humidity will drop and by sunday it looks fantastic, okay. dry, warm, but the relative humidity are really going to take a dive on sunday so by far sunday is the most beautiful day of the weekend. saturday's not too shabby but sunday looks a little cooler and not humid at all. tonight we're mild and muggy again, 73 in town, a lot of mid 70's out there and tomorrow we'll start off with showers, maybe a thunderstorm. i'm going to leave them in until noon tomorrow. 78 degrees. tomorrow afternoon, tomorrow early evening we're dry but it looks like as we get into the latter evening hours we could have some more showers and thundertorms coming on through. upper 80's
