thank you for being here. we know putin said they didn't have anything to do with it the let me start with you and get your take, professor on, you know, what's your take about what happened during this two and a half hour meeting >> well, first off, we don't know what happened because it was a small meeting. only the two foreign ministers and the two presidents were allowed and we don't have a transcript, a videotaping. we have to take all the participants at their word after the briefing. what we do know is that president trump supposedly pressed putin on the issue of interference in our election. we don't know the contents or the tone of exactly how he did that. putin responded by denying it. however, now we've got two narratives that have emerged after meeting. the foreign minister said that the president, president trump accepted that denial. on the other hand, tillerson and other aids said that he did not accept it and continued to press and we're still going to be dealing with the iss

russians moving forward. there's a lot of ambiguity after the meeting. we don't exactly know what happened. nile, as we look at this meeting, the small audience right there, where do we move from here >> the russians are quite happy that we are moving forward. this is one of the points that has come up subsequent to the meeting. tillerson has been talking about the fact this is something that can be not quite moved exactly to the past but shouldn't interfere much with continued relations. that's an advantage. they don't want to get bogged down in this area, and president trump, for his part will be happy to move on to the other topics. talk about russia doesn't generally help him given everything else in the atmosphere >> do any of you guys think this was a carefully crafted thing by the white house for days we heard we don't know we're not going to go see if he's goes to talk about russia or not, this morning

john podesta. in the room, we had, you know, the russian ambassador was in the room. was this all a setup for what was going to be a 30-minute meeting and became a two-hour, was this just, you know, to set the media up? was this real? what's your take on that, ambassador? >> looking i think we know what we know. which is the duration on the meeting. we know the context of the meeting. one of the big stories is the discussion about trade. trade between the u.s. and russia, but the big issue is whether or not the u.s. and the administration is going to pose tariff taxes and sanctions on imported steal in the u.s. that's very much had angel merkel engaged. at global crisis but there's a concern about the protection that the u.s. may be making >> there was a lot of talk about the

agreement on syria, rex tillerson afterwards said will it hold? i guess we'll see. he seem pretty noncommittal about it. how important was it to at least bring that up, professor? was that a surprise they talked about this today and do things like this hold up long term >> they usually don't hold up long term. we've had many cease fires, i don't think there's high expectations about this going forward, but president trump, both president left with something to show their audience, and that president pruitt is important but also for trump >> we talk about politics a lot about what it a looks like to put president trump next to putin, how would that play for russians to see putin next to the president of the united states >> putin very well, putin is known as the master negotiater, this will look far favorably on his ability to project

on a bilateral can only spell good things for putin running forward. he has an election campaign next year, this is important for him >> nile, what about optics the rest of the world? how does the rest of the world perceive the u.s. or the president >> i think one of the real dangerous for the united states this weekend and maybe longer, shawn, is the idea of angela merkel, the chancellor of germany has been talked up as the new leader of the free world and there have been a couple of polls, to international impressions of the united states declining significant, since president trump took office >> one of the big announcements before the g20 was that japan and the european union were entering in a free trade agreement. their discussions about china and mexico doing free trade agreement, while we've been looking at how we renegotiate

old agreements, our major trade competitors are moving forward with new ambitious agreements. and so there's a real disconnect with what the rest of the world is doing at least the way we're looking at the white house, i think capitol hill probably looks at it more like the way the rest of the world is looking, which is how do we expand our trade, rather than reviewing the old agreements that we have >> nile mentioned the perspective or at least the idea that merkel may be the new leader of the free world but there were polls that came out, we can't trust every poll. some came out with a poll that said at least state side there were more people here that trusted mer kel to solve the world 56 versus 46 who had confidence in president trump. does that really matter in the grand scheme of things when you have these sum it is when you have all these world leaders in one place at the same time >> i think it does matter in the context of leaders who are pressing for a bigger role on the world stage, including greater free trade, and that's i believe where the u.s. has the biggest risk right now. we had been

leaving her temporary residents, she was supposed to join the spouses, she instead had to miss out. >> people though were not just listening to what president trump and president putin had to say during the first meeting >> they were watching body language, and for that, we turn to chris who's back we have her on. you always bring a unique perspective because you're an expert in body language. we're going to talk body language right now. how closely did you watch this today and what stood out to you? >> couple things. you know, i watched president trump, i watched putin. and i think they both had some winning and losing moments. look at how our president here is sitting at the edge of his seat. some would say that he was very anxious or nervous. i think he looks like he's ready and he's taking an authoritative stance here. i liked it >> that reminded me when he was sitting next to president obama a day or two after the election in the white house, that was

i feel like a lot of people said that was the moment he realized everything that was about the to fall on his shoulders >> take a look at putin, sitting back in his chair. expanding his girth to look bigger. donald trump is a bigger man than putin and he has more stature, but there was very little eye contact on putin's part. he did not engage him at all. now, is that authoritative or to dismissive? was he interested or completely disinterested in what was happening? >> what did you >> there were winning moments and losing moments for both. in this situation, where they're sitting in these adjacent chairs facing forward, i felt like, the president trump won. earlier, when president trump grabbed his hand and shook it and then later padded his back, to me, seemed a liquid arrogant and pushy. you know, i didn't like it

heard a lot of times there have been other reports that president putin like to say play psychological games. first time he met merkel, he took a dog because he heard she was terrified of dogs as a child. do you think that what he was doing here was all part of his psychological game? >> if it was, what he did was he gave our president the silent treatment. and donald trump doesn't know how to handle that. so he filled the white space with things that weren't important or, he actually, i thought, i didn't like when he said he was delighted and honored to meet putin. i didn't really want to hear him say that. i wanted to hear him be more -- >> seemed like a boilerplate thing to say when you have world leaders side by side. i don't know if it took away anything more than that >> when president trump is scripted. he does a pretty good >> sure, absolutely >> when he's not scripted where you get to see more of

with the white participates that we had today, he was unscripted and filled it. the other thing he did was shook his putin's hand twice, and both times, his palm was up, which is, when you study body language, a very submissive behavior. when you come at someone with your palm like this, that is an authoritative stance, when you come like, it's a submissive. our president was giving mixed signals. >> do you think in donald trump's world before he got into politics, he was the dominant figure, this is completely ballgame for him, could that be part of us it, his lack of experience or feeling uncomfortable on this world on the stage you're not used to being on. >> he's learning on the job, on-the-job training 101 right now. i don't think it's been as easy as he thought it might be. >> what is my body language tell you? >> i don't know, you're getting a little

in june, much more than expected. labor department said the overall unemployment rose to 4.4% up from 4.3. economists say it's evidence of economic momentum heading into the second half of the year. the unemployment rate fell to 7.1%, lowest level in more than 17 years. that is good news. it's good when we hear about job numbers going up. certainly the employment rate going down. it always sounds like great news for our country >> there was a lot of talk i would say likely as we saw the job rate drop after the great recession. the question was, was it on account of less people looking for work? both sides will try to spin the numbers. with us to talk about the jobs numbers is a senior policy analyst at the independent women's foreign. what is your take away from the

>> these numbers were a blockbuster report. economists were only expecting about 179,000 jobs to be created. and we had 222,000, which means that employers feel encouraged. they have some confidence in the future and they're willing to be able to hire people. now, there are sore spots, stubborn areas in the economy that still haven't turned round >> what are they >> labor participation rates. that's the rate of people who are joining the work force, people who have been out for awhile and coming back. that's still at 40-year lows. also looking at wage growth. americans have seen maybe two and a half percent wage increase. and people under employed. those who want a full-time job but working part time. we saw that take up to 5.3 million people >> we saw more jobs created than you see an uptick in the unemployment rate by 4.3 to 4.4. what does that mean for people

>> it's suggesting that people are -- have confidence. people who are unemployed coming back to the work force, the question is whether there's a job and whether they have the skills to be able to meet the jobs available. that's also kind of another part of the picture that was really left out of the numbers. there are millions of jobs that remain unfilled because american workers don't necessarily have the skills needed for them. >> jim was sort of mentioning and if you could explain this a little bit more again, little bit more. is that the number of people coming back to work, are we -- you were trying to explain during the great recession >> there are people saying they weren't -- they gave up on looking for jobs >> as we look at these numbers and we know that oftentimes depending on what party you're from, they will spin it one way or another, is this more jobs being created or are we seeing people coming back to the work force >> you have both things going on. you have more people joining the
