accusations of collusion with russia. president trump said he didn't know about his son's meeting with that russian lawyer until recently. critics aren't convinced >> as you can see it's 6:30 and on the rundown it's one of the biggest stories we're talking about at 6:30. tweet us what's on your mind with the #5at630 watching two big story, christopher wray grilled by the senate judiciary committee. he was nominated by the president to lead the fbi. he was a hi ranking official in george w bush justice department and later represented new jersey governor constitutes yes, it is in bridgegate >> we're following the latest developments in the russia investigation. donald trump junior spoke to fox and wanted to clear the air over the controversy surrounding that meeting last summer with the russian lawyer. >> in retrospect i would have done things differently. again this is before the russia mania, this was opposition research they had something, you know, maybe a concrete evidence to all the stories i had been hearing about that

years, not just during the campaign. so i think i wanted to hear it out. really, it went nowhere and it was apparently that's not what the meeting was about >> donald trump junior said he never told his father about the meeting and today, in an interview with router's president trump said he didn't know until just a couple of days ago. he defended his son decision to take the meeting. he thinks many people would have done the same thing. let's bring in our panel. glen ivy, former state's attorney for and a congressional lawyer during another fair enough investigation, the white water affair, maurice simpson president of young democrats and republican strategist and guy who got the blue suit and white shirt memo joining us on our panel. gentlemen, good evening. >> let's start mr. ivy welcome. with all of this going on, a lot are saying is the focus in the right place on this investigation? what new wrinkle did the e-mail situation brought fm

investigation? >> well, it clearly connected the trump campaign to russians trying to get information to the campaign, and it was explicitly outlined in the e-mail as it was it wasn't going to incriminating against hillary clinton. and that they wanted to try and help trump win the presidency. those are two big problems explicitly there in the e-mail that hadn't been there before >> the question is was it criminal? did that rise to the level of something that perhaps he could be prosecuted for or something the trump organization, the campaign could get in trouble for >> yes. the short answer. i believe they're scrambling now to sort of deny that it, you know, he intended for it to be what it was. but it looks like you got potential violations of the campaign finance laws, for example, receiving information from foreign nationals or foreign individuals to influence a federal campaign. can cross that line. looks like there's conspiracy potential here, too. linking up the effort by the campaign to try and

hillary clinton. and then there's the risk that some of the information may have come from hacks or the like. that would be -- that hacks are theft basically. the campaign really may be in some issues the people who were on campaign here in the administration. may be in hot water. >> jump on in >> i think this further calls into question the integrity of this administration, for months, the trump administration and campaign denied contact with russia in terms of communication or collusion and this poke as direct hole in those statements. i think this furthers the, investigation needs to go as far as it can >> we've seen both, many lawyers come out and said this wasn't tree son collusion, taking a meeting is not collusion. it happens all the time. it's not collusion >> the democrats are out there are saying this is tree son, don't know the definition of tree son or >> tim kane is one >> or overreacting. of the democrats

crime overreacting hasn't work against donald trump in 16 or the special elections, if they want to connect with the voters, they should talk about issues that matter, like healthcare and tax reform >> i'm sure that's what americans would love to talk about but the scandal keeps coming up every day so we can't get off the while you say that the republicans have been equally critical of donald trump junior in these e-mails as the democrats have. so how do you respond to, you know, all sorts of republican lawmakers saying they need they don't come clean now, enough is enough. >> i can't agree more. i think, first the meeting never should have happened. take that off the table though. and you have this drip, drip be drip effect they really need to sit everyone down in the white house, any time you met with someone named bore is drank vodka, tell me what's going on, the way they're handling this crisis in effective. but at the same time

collusion or attempted collusion with the ukrainians and the dnc, they hired worked with the dnc, worked with the consultant to disseminate information with the ukrainian government and get that out. this is just an e-mail, that at best, could provide some evidence of collusion. but we have evidence with the ukrainian government saying >> but did the ukrainian -- was there interference with the ukrainian government in the election >> just because you're ineffective in your collusion does not make you. >> want to jump in >> in traditional trump fashion we're moving the ball. talking about the ukrainian versus the dnc. of when we have a direct meeting where donald trump junior said i love it. where that shows his direct intent to engage in some type of activity with russian officials. and so to try to move the ball on, you know, another situati

whatsoever, you know, is just a disservice. >> here's the problem for the trump white house right now. they're getting so problematic with the information that's coming out, this actually peeling off republicans. you have lindsay graham and others coming out and not only distancing themselves from the white house, but being openly critical about it. and on capitol hill. they're trying to blame things on the democrats for not moving forward. everybody knows the republicans control the white house. the house and the senate. the problem with moving policy forward isn't the democrats. behind -- especially on ited - healthcare. >> let me ask you. we're out of time. i'm just curious, what do you thinking is going on with robert mueller as he's looking at this investigation when you're looking at it from your perspective >> he hasn't even gotten started. the amazing thing we got this amount of information, nobody issued subpoena, no interviews have been done by mueller. they haven't started the grand jury. once he gets going,

make it better >> seems like there's little they can do at this point to get the democrats. you got to worry about some republicans that are on the edge at this point. on capitol hill tonight tthe senate judiciary committee began confirmation hearings for christopher wray nominated to lead the fbi >> who is christopher wray and what does he think about the administration's relationship with russia? tom fitzgerald joins us with the latest on this. fitz? >> reporter: to answer your question, christopher wray is man who found himself in a very hot, seat on capitol hill. this was a remarkable confirmation hearing for an fbi director in a number of ways. and remember, christopher wray is only in that chair today because his predecessor james comey got fired in the spring by president trump and that unleashed all of these allegations that the reason comey was fired what to shut down the fbi's russia trump campaign investigation. so here we are today, and by a lot of

democrats and republicans, they say went well for christopher wray through the his questioning they seemed to be receptive to what he was saying. what did he say? well, a lot of things that he said were in contradiction to the white house has said. this, for example, senators wanted to know about ways independents would he be somebody who was his own man in that job? he made it very clear today that he was not going to be going into a lot of one-on-one meetings with the president and if he was, he was going to have somebody with the justice department there to record and have a catalogue of what he said and he also wasn't going to put up with interference with anybody and that includes the president of the united states. this is how he put it >> i think the relationship beween afib director and any president needs to be a professional one, not a social one. and there certainly shouldn't be any discussion between one-on-one discussions between the fbi director and any

to conduct particular investigations or cases. >> reporter: and there was a lot of conversation about another former fbi director, but that one will be robert mueller, who is now the special counsel in charge of this investigation into the russian interference of the 2016 elections. at one point, wray was asked about the statements that president trump made repeatedly that all of this is a witch hunt in the president's words. did wray agree with this? he was asked, this is how he answered. >> senator, i can't speak to the basis for those comments. i can tell you that my experience with director >> i'm asking you as the future fbi director, do you consider this endeavor a witch hunt? >> i do not consider director mueller to be on a witch hunt. >> reporter: all right. you heard it there. somebody asked him at one point do you realize what you're getting yourself into, the position you are now

about to assume? wray looked right in the eye tonight, jim and shawn and said this is not a job for the faint of heart. i am not faint of heart. it was a strong performance in the words of a lot of republicans and democrats up here today. >> as we watch that today, fitz and you and i were talking about it before. it's this is one of those nominations where you expect to see a healthy bipartisan showing in the end, judging upon the performance today. >> reporter: well, i think a lot of this speaks to the strength here of the understanding by both sides, even though there hasn't been a lot of bipartisan on the hill. we can't not have an fbi director, and you know, for all of the controversies that have surrounded donald trump, you know, two of his biggest nominees here, fbi director and others would point out supreme court justice neil gorsuch once up here and once the

been gone over, these appear to be strong candidates and in gorsuch's position, that led to his confirmation, although it was in politics. this is a different deal. there's a lot of irons in the fire right now, the fbi can got go rutterless and wray did well in both their eyes, be it al for that reason ken, patrick leahy, seemed to be responsive and pleased >> what's next here? more hearings? >> reporter: well, they will put this to a vote. it is not expected that there's going to be any, you know, big democrat opposition to think maybe christopher wray was not the man the democrats would have chosen. but he's the man they have before them right now. and the way this hearing went today, shawn, it appears from all indications right now, the senate judiciary committee will approve this nomination that sends it on to the full senate and there's
