fox 5 news at 10:00 starts right now. high school students from more than 150 countries are competing in the three-day robotics challenge here in dc >> for team afghanistan, it was already a challenge just getting into the country for the competition. till president trump stepped in. fox 5 christian leone was there for the start of the competition. >> reporter: good evening, it's an exciting time for all of these gifted students and we saw that today at the opening ceremony. these students have worked hard and invested so much time. for the girls on team afghanistan, they had to jump an even bigger hurdle to physically be here to compete. that is the all girls robotics team you see there from afghanistan. they were the first team to proceed today at opening ceremony. now, they were denied their visas, not once but

anyway for the competition. this last week, president trump gave them the go ahead for them to be cleared into the country and today, one of the girls that we spoke to on that team she on just how difficult it's been for them to compete. >> even if the first and second time our visa got denied we were super disappointed and sad, but still sent the robot to the u.s. hope we will -- still we're going to to it again. >> the state department hasn't specifically said why their visas were denied but they did say, and i quote -- all visa applications are agitated on a case-by-case basis. in accordance with u.s. law. keep in mind afghanistan is not part of the trump administration's revised travel ban.

brody? >> thank you. new tonight, long time sportscaster bob wolf has died. his son rick wolf said his father died peacefully saturday night at his home. wolf broadcasted the nfl championship game, world series, nba finals and stanley cup final. he interviewed babe ruth, did play by play for decades for the new york knicks and rangers. wolf was a sportscaster for our station, wttg on the old domont network in 1946, he was 96. sad news out of hollywood. martin da ndau died of unexpected complications. he was the star of the mission impossible tv series, won an oscar for the role of dread wood and famously turned down the role of mr. spoke. he had just celebrated his 89th birthday. switching it

>> i can't even express how badly i want someone to come forward. we need this case resolved. he did not deserve to be executed the way he was. he took four gunshots to his chest. it's my prayer that anybody who has any information, the slightest information to call crime solvers >> terry sally came back to the apartment complex in hopes of learning something new. she put up flyers and questioned residents as they came and left from the building. sally says she knows her son was at a craps game in northeast until about 2:00 in the morning, before coming to this complex. she said he park his scooter and was found shot to death around 5:00 a.m. last saturday. some people said they heard the shots but did not call the police. anthony russell may have been shot a couple hours before his body was found. prince george's coun

the county evened out after he put all of his officers on 12 hour shifts. >> it's actually been falling. and i want to be clear, when we went into this initiative, we were flat. essentially in the same place for rhyme this career as last year. we weren't experiencing a huge spike. we weren't way ahead in anything and we seen a lot of activity calm down, hearing if things from the officers on the street and that's who i rely on. >> reporter: police say they need much more help in this case, need witnesses to come forward. there's a cash reward of up to $25,000 and you can remain anonymous. reporting from hyattsville, paul wagner, fox 5 local news. in prince george's county, we're finding out why a school board member chose to resign soon after fox 5 exposed allegations of grade fixing and corruption within the school system. >> during open records requests, we obtained her resignation letter to the county executive.

lindsey watts joins us. >> reporter: as we've been reporting the state is now launching an independent investigation into claims of grade changing and fraud to boost the prince george's county graduation rate. claims made by these four board members in a letter to the governor. after that letter came out. the board quickly split with nine other members condemning their colleagues, saying that the allegations were false. well, one board member didn't publicly support either side. and last month, she resigned. beverly anderson was appointed by county executive rushern baker four years ago. in her resignation, she had harsh words about experiences on the school board and the current state of the school system. she wrote that she has concerns about lack of a coherent educational plan, a thoughtful budget and lack of independent board members. she goes on to call the school board dysfunctional possibly because too many of the members are compromised a

interest. she also voiced these concerns to executive baker adding she's been a supporter 20 years, again, baker land selected her to be on the board. we asked him for his response, he had nothing but praise and thanked her. didn't want to sit down for an interview i spoke to her by phone, even though she didn't take a side, she said she believes the truth will come out. she had this to say at the final school board meeting last month. >> in my mind, sometimes it takes a storm before the calm. once we get that calm, we can start moving in the direction to insure that all students are given a quality education. >> we have been following up on what's next for had that independent investigation into the fraud claims. the state of maryland is now searching for a company to come in and do that work. we found out the public bid went out last week.

ruling last month which will allow some aspects to go into effect. comes after a federal judge in hawaii expanded the list of family member whose can get into the united states. the judge order that day refugees be allowed in if they're working with an agency in the united states. the justice department lawyers say the federal judge overstepped the bounds and want the supreme court to settle it. republicans healthcare bill hit a couple new snags, mitch mcconnell says he's delaying a vote on the measure because john mccain is recovering from surgery the congressional budget office is delaying its release of its analysis of the new legislation. we hear more from garrett tenney. >> reporter: this delay means the senate won't be holding a vote on the revised healthcare bill for at least another week while senator mccain is recovering. in the meantime. majority leader mitch mcconnell has additional time to win over fellow republcans particularly those

expanded medicaid under obamacare. the big complaint is the current plan includes massive cuts to medicaid funding, mcconnel made a number of changes to the bill to help ease concerns by giving those states additional funding. today, a majority whip john core non-said those have given a bill a much better shot >> i think republicans have made repeated promises and elections leading up to now. that we would, and we could do better and i believe we will. this bill actually i think has gotten much better as a result of the discussions we've had amongst ourselves >> at this point nones of those senators come around to support the bill and susan collins of maine one of two republican whose plans to vote against the bill said there are still eight to ten lawmakers with deep enough concerns that it may not pass >> i don't know. i think it would be extremely close. many of us have concerns about the bill. partic
