>> welcome everybody this monday. >> sglawn jim. >> good to be with you. there's a new poll that finds president trump approval ratings are the worst of any president's first six months in office. he's promising a week of action. there's too many challenges. >> as you can see this is what we're talking about tonight at 6:0. join us and tweet us use 5@ 5@630. and let's get to it now. new poll shows approval rating hit a new low. "washington post" "abc news" poll found 36% of americans approved of president performance in oval office down from 42% at 100 day mark in april. and by the way this is lo

sixth month approval rating of any president in the last 0 years. >> meanwhile another obstacle for the president when it comes to healthcare reform. mitch mcconnell delayed a vote on the bill. this comes after senator john mccain underwent surgery over the weekend. and at the same time congressional budget office says it will not release score on latest gop bill today that was at least the original plan. john mccain was seen as yes vote on this. so you need his votes. considering how tight it could be and they're saying a week before he comes back he has a blood clot behind his eye. it's a matter of flying it's a week before he can fly again. >> let's bring in sarah caroline smith to talk to us from politico.com. >> thanks for having me. >> obviously the needd mc mccain's vote. even without the vote democrats said we can hold hearings to talk about this why not do something like t that. what's going on. so democrats throughout this entire process have pushed republicans in congres

have really never relented on that. soy think it's unlikely to happen now particularly how far along they are with this bill. and the next thing to look forward to is probably sometime this week the non partisan congressional budget office will issue its analysis of the latest senate bill and we'll get a sense of how many people will be insured or uninsured under this bill and if there will be any new changes to kind of how much money it saves the government. and new details on how -- who this bill will affect, whose insurance may be more costly and whose may be cheaper and that kind of thing. >> sarah last week thursday or friday the trump administration put out a vi video. and it was more or less seen as preemtive strike against cbo saying they already -- they miss -- i'm going to use george w. bush term miss underestimated the number of people that may be uninsured along the way. is that seen as just the preemtive strike if

comes out and is higher than expected. >> the white house made a couple of preemtive strikes against cbo score they put out over the weekend a pressure release that ended with cbo score nothing but fake news. and. >> by the way, can we get past -- i know -- i recognize that is narrative rights now and i recognize there's a general anger against the media. let's put it -- just because they may disagree with something out there, it ain't fake news. fake news is what we saw blanketed online. fake news are email forwards from aunt anduncle. this is not fake news. >> it's important to remember that the cbo is filled with expert economists and health policy analysts and people this their field and while any cbo score involves a number after assumptions and they can't perfectly predict how a bill will react or piece of legislation will affect huge marketplace like healthcare they're doing best to make accurate assumptions
6:34 pm
people can analyze the bill and make slightly different assumptions and it will be imperfect most likely and that's not to say they're deliberately trying to be misleading or wrong in any way. >> sarah, let me ask you. how much is the white house trying to get involved. i understand the president is expected to meet with gop lawmakers tonight to talk about this even with john mccain expected to be the yes vote, do they have enough votes to really actually get this through. >> right now it's really unclear. there's probably somewhere between 6 and 10 senators uncommitted and not yes votes. they have not said there's no strong votes. but we know there's a number of moderate senators like dean heler from nevada and shelly moore capito and rob portman from ohio that will be tough for the white house to get to yes on this and notably none of the people that are on the edge right now are going to meet with the height house tonight. they're meeting with more supporters of the bill. so we'll see because it's not like yes, there's a delay and it's

mccain's health but they have a lot of work to get everybody else on board. >> sarah caroline smith it's greets you have on. thanks for coming in tonight. >> thanks for having me. >> absolutely. >> a three-week made in america campaign and day one some say it may be backfiring. >> let's check in with ronica cleary. she skoyns us now. ronica, what are folks phone the streets saying about this. >> reporter: jim, shawn, i'll till i was fascinated by variety of kvrps and responses i had with people on the street whether made in america product affects if they will buy it and so first i'll tail you inside the white house. today was a made in america showcase. there were 50 company there's. one from each state with made in the usa products. we spoke with some of the local companies from virginia, flag company, national capital flag company from maryland eastern shore. this one is a bit of tongue twister. eddie heath crab pots and supply company and then

set son hats the iconic stetson hat. first let's give insiders a look at changes they say they face. take a listen. >> mostly cost. i mean our cost especially in this area are much higher than flag companies that import from china or indonesia. the labor rates are biggest problems. other thing is trying to make sure that everybody good goes into the flag and is made in mark. >> fax reform. definitely tax reform. >> for a small business it's tough. it's a lot of taxes that would be nice if they were out, lowered. >> you have overseas influence and we buy rogerfelt and so we try to keep everything

house it's challenging to compete with competitors buying overseas. >> now of course we wanted to hear from you directly. what do you think about made in america product. i posted a tweet earlier and got response which gave me idea for twitter poll. when you buy something is made many america a key factor. so first let's listen to what people said us to on the street >> it's not important at all i buy what products i want and as long as it fits my needs a purchase it. >> i actually prefer if i can to buy american if it's comparable. so i definitely do look for that made in the usa. >> no it's not it isn't i'm looking at economics of purchase price. >> now over 100 of you weighed in on twitter with the twitter poll. you

amongst choices. 32% of you said yes and 29% of you said no and 39% of you said it depends on product. the thing i thought of when i through that in there is i har a lot of people buying american made cars maybe a more difficult time buying clothing. with some items you can buy it and others it maybe feels very difficult to accomplish that goal. keep weighing in and tweeting responses and use that # 5@630 back to you jim and shawn. >> thank you. >> let's point out something today that came up another press briefing it was off camera but brought up to sean spicer. >> president and his daughter both have a lot of product made. but they're manufactured overseas they asked would they reduce that. >> and that's not news. that's been around a long t time. sean spicer says he's not in a position to say the private brands trump are private brands what they would do or ve

that came up as well and we should point that out. that's the 800 poundel at that point in the room. >> ll most daily be talk about trump's war with the press. you know what, he's not the first. >> presidents before him fouingts are the fres. philip terzy from washington examiner is here to break it down us with phil good evening. >> thanks for joining us. righted to be here. >> this is not a big sur surprise. the president has played the press card and played quite a bit in his administration. and dispute with state that's nothing new. >> nothing new and in fact the whole apparatus of the white house press office and so on is very much very modern invention in the american president dncy and even when i was starting out in the mid 20th century as a journalist here in washington. there was no special room for reporters. i mean those are all modernen ovation which we tend to think now have been there as soon as the time of jefferson an monroe and it's n t
6:40 pm
>> sure there's been a lot of criticism lately from the lead ma bras press briefings have been on media. what have we seen about the stories coming out and things about fake news compare to previous administrations throughout history do we see the same thing. my experience is all presidents fundamentally dislike and distrust the pr press. some are more skilled than others at disbuysing that f fact. obviously reporters and politicians have different agendas and they want their virtion of the story ow. the main difference now is president trump as you well know is temperamentally different from the previous presidents and present plenty of pitch welfare. >> as we look at disputes between white us and media
6:41 pm
you think of administration where it was contentious something like we're seeing right now because president trump as twitter and social media and different ways to do that when you look at history what are some toxic relationships. >> well in recent years of course president nixon had a con ten us is relation with the press it's publishers i don't get along with and it's manipulative. >> and they are all dispointed by the coverage they get they're mid to theirs is not imprint. >> last thing i want to ask before you go. a lot of people asked about this do you see a fundamental difference between thousand they treat president obama
6:42 pm
think rep presidents have a higher bar to pass than most in these things. the press tends to chief towards that side. and president trump i think has had a particularly contentious relationship which i think you can blame both sides for it. >> phil with the washington examiner. thanks for coming in. >> there's efforts to allow non citizen vote others to participate in local elec elections. what do you think. we'll got a closer look at the issue when we come back.

here in our area. >> turns out there are six other towns in maryland already doing this allowing people who are not citizens of the united states to vote in these local elections. why do this? that's one of the big questions. well the folks who are supporting this say look, in their opinion, non citizens live in a lot of these communities and contribute financially to a lot of those communities and they feel that these people not u.s. citizens should be allowed to have a say in how their local communities run their governments. >> their experiences are affected by local politics and while they still live here i think maybe it might be a good idea to have some say in politics sdmri think college park is unique example because population is geared to university life and so much of the university is temporarily present here. >> so if they're going to do this here in college park, what they'll have to do is pass amendment.
6:46 pm
town's charter which in essence would allow non u.s. citizens to vote in these local elections. but we should be clear with you. this town is at odds over t this. people have different opinions over this. they're not shy about sharing it on the street or going down to town council meeting to talk about this. opponents say this, they say they do not aif you were giving the right to vote to somebody who is not a u.s. citizen that it is fair to the person who is a u.s. citizen. furthermore, they say voting is a right of citizenship. and should be something that is attained if you become a citizen. >> they're not citizens of this country or city or state. that doesn't make sense. they don't pay taxes. how do they have the right to vote and make decisions for us as citizens of this area. >> you're only here temporarily. any choice us make or votes you giv
