they've dealt with animal attacks. the news at 10 starts now. we begin tonight with the road rage incident near the beltway in alexandria. we're told it ended in gun gunfire. thanks for joining us tonight i'm shawn yancy. >> i'm tony perkins. >> tonight, police have 59-year-old ernest steak until custody. he shot a woman this morning along eisenhower avenue after their two vehicles exited the beltway. >> lauren demarco is live at alexandria police headquarters to get us started. lauren. >> tony, shawn, i spoke with a suspect's mother tonight and she is horified. she says she cannot believe her son could be led to shoot somebody just overrode rage. police are saying that that is what happened. and seconds after the shooting a camera on nearby business record whad may have been the suspect's white van entering eyes hour and fairmont avenue. the black suv with wounded driver turns

and comes to a stop for a few seconds before crossing road and stopping on other side of the street. a 33-year-old woman in that car was shot according to radio traffic she was hit in the neck and back. a man in the car with her was not hit. the woman was tape to the hospital and is expect todz recover. the white van took off. several hours later ernest stickle turns himself into maryland state police in frederick. at his home in mechanicsville, maryland, his mother opened the door and she told me the road raim and shooting happened on his drive to work for an auto glass company. after the shooting he drove home unbeknownst to her parked the van in front of her house and jumped into another vehicle he opens. she doesn't know what drove him to frederick, maryland, he's been arrested twice in the path and his mother is shocked he would have been involved in something like this he has two young adult son who's are devastated

accused of shooting was alive. we spoke to the next door neighborhood as well. >> i never interacted with the family. it's a quiet neighborhood. it's unnecessary airy putting another person's life at danger. there's other avenues to take for sure dealing with your anger. but going that far is extremely skev excessive and nenlt for sure. reckless as well. >> reporter: now this comes on heels of early similar case in pennsylvania just last month. a man there is charged with shooting and killing an 18-year-old girl who just graduated from high school all overrode rage. as for stickle he remains in jail in fred ring county tonight. police recovered the white van from outside his home and he's expected to be sent to alexandria to face charges. here in alexandria, lauren demarco,

developing tonight arizona senator john mccain diagnosed with a brain tumor. the 80-year-old has aggressive form of cancer known as gleo blast tomorrow a. and, doctors say the senator is recovering and considering treatment options including chemotherapy. >> the senator's office released a statement earlier tonight that said in part he's in good spirits as he continues to recover at home with his family in arizona and grateful to the doctors and staffers at the mayo clinic for outstanding care and is confident that any future treatment will be effective. >> questions linger tonight about a video that appears to show baltimore police officers planting drugs at a crime scene. an assistant public defender representing the person charged with possessing drugs forwarded the body camera footage to the state attorney office. the 90 seconds video shows three officers, officer you richard panero can be seen placing can in an area filled with

officers look on. then panero activates his body camera and returns to pick up the can. what he apparently doesn't know is that the cameras save 30 seconds of video from before they're activated. we just found out over the last day or so about this allegation, the state's attorney's office contacted the office of professional responsibility on the baltimore police department and we immediately launched an investigation. >> panero is reportedly a witness in more than 50 active cases and the public defender's office says the prosecutor was apaled by the video and dropped the charges in this case. it's not nope what will happen in the dozens of other cases involving that officer. new tonight, for the second time in a week a rabid raccoon attacked a person in arlington. a woman bitten last week had to get 87 stitches and a man bitten today is recovering.

story. chris tip, i heard neighbors are almost afraid to come out of their homes. >> reporter: they're very nervous, indeed, shawn, they're inside their homes. we have not seen raccoons at night so far. this is the latest coming from fairington community here. i spoke with animal control. they have not confirmed whether or not the raccoons are rabid or not. the fact this is happening is concerning enough for the residents. you want to show you quickly the neighborhoods they're living in you can see it's woodsy and park-like setting for the raccoons again to has been tate in this community and trash rules sign here a lot of neighbors believe that because people are putting out their trash when they're not supposed to, not during the hours of 6 to 9 a.m. that's contributing to this problem. like like you mentioned we spoke with the man today who was attacked this morning. and he went into a lot of detail about

moment he stepped out on to his front porch and he saw not 1 but two raccoons. >> i didn't know what was going on and then they started clawing at me and biting my leg. i was knocking them away trying to get them away and kicking them away. trying to back up and back into my house and close the door. i got bit by the larger raccoon on the right inner thigh. and then several claw marks on both legs. >> there's a lot of folks in the community that are kind of fearful right now. so, it's getting to the point where it's people are probably going to be afraid to leave their houses. >> and now thankfully the man you saw previously is recovering tonight. and he ended up getting treated right away and part of protocol is to get tested for rabies in this case. and now, we also spoke with again like i mentioned before animal control and they were saying if you come into contact with any sort of
