during surgery to remove a blood week. experts say the long-term prognosis is not good. now this morning, we're taking closer look at the senator's outlook. the impact his illness could have and the outpouring of support from both sides of the aisle. john mccain is a fighter. a former prisoner of war, senator, presidential candidate, but word of hads newly discovered brain tumor has been difficult to digest. >> it's tough news, and, um, it is tough. >> reporter: mccain spoke on the phone with senator lindsay graham one of his best friends in the senate after doctors made the diagnosis. discovering the tumor while removing a blood clot above his eye. >> god knows how this ends. not me. but i do know this. this disease is never had a more worthy opponent. >> mccain' colleagues in congress were stunned on a night when republicans were meeting on health care reform counting on mccain's vote. bipartisan

daughter meghan issued a statement on twitter in it she said her father remains the most confident and calm in the face of the brain cancer diagnosis. she also called him the toughest person she knows. and he will never surrender. >> obviously we wish him the best. i told allison my first d.c. moment when i first moved here the first time i walk into the us capitol the first person i saw was john mccain. i was in complete -- complete awe. >> true american hero. that's for sure. >> i can't remember who said it someone else said you just can't think about the senate without thinking about john mccain. just doesn't -- he's like one of those always been there. >> right. >> and seems like he would always be there. >> wishing him the best. >> absolutely. the other big political trauma regrets choosing jeff sessions to be his attorney general. had he known that sessions would recuse himself from overseeing the russian investigation he would not have appointed him at all. sessions was one of president trump's earliest supporters and acted as a campaign surrogate.

>> reporter: good morning to all of you. yeah. i mean holly, it was definitely an unsettling moment in that neighborhood even as early as 5:00 a.m. some neighbors were walking by kind of wondering what is going on because it's a really quite residential area. this is the 1600 block of belvedere boulevard and police at this hour still tell us they're searching for the gunman unable to provide a suspect description, and they also don't know how or what exactly happened. they tell us that around 10:00 o'clock last night they received a 911 call from someone inside the house, and they reported that a suspect entered the home and shot the victim. the victim a 21-year-old man and then just left the scene. so that is basically what we know at this time. and so police were out there for about seven hours or so processing the scene we saw them focusing in on the upper level that is where the victim was found lying with gunshot wounds. we know that the victim was also taken to a hospital. that is where he passed away, but they haven't

identification right now, and again, we don't know exactly who they're looking for. and we also ask if the victim lived at this home. and they are unable to answer that right now as well. so they are asking us to get the word out. that if you know anything, if you have heard anything to give them a call at 866-411-tips. or just call 911 and let them know what you may know. but at this hour, 21-year-old man dead and suspect is on the loose much that's the very latest from silver spring. back to you all in studio. >> annie, thanks very much. a maryland man will place charges in alexandria for his apparent role in terrifying road rage incident that ended in gunfire. investigators say earnest stickle of mechanicsville, maryland fired at another vehicle after they both exited the bells way at eisenhower avenue just before 8:00 yesterday morning. a 33-year-old woman in the car the other car was hit. she remains in stable condition. stickle took off before police got to the

he later turned himself in to police in frederick, maryland where he's being held this morning. also couldn't to follow developing story involving the national robotics competition that was here in d.c. earlier this week. six members of a team from an african nation are missing this morning. all of them teenagers. we now have the official police report in the case. what we don't have are those six teenagers. bob barnard is outside constitution hall where the competition was earlier this week. bob, what's going on in this? bizarre twist what had been an international event. >> reporter: exactly, steve. and this is where these teenagers from the republic of barundi which is in east africa this is where they were last seen tuesday afternoon. dar constitution hall site of the competition. d.c. police have put out individual missing persons posters on social media of all six of these teenagers. they are 16 to 18 years old. each of them was last seen around 5:00 p.m. here at this is basically 17th and

their lives. >> well, he went down to florida and he had -- he struggled with addiction most of his adult life, um, but he did have about 90 days clean when he passed. we were unaware that he had relapsed. so it did come as a complete shock. >> so what do you say to other people now who might be dealing with a loved one who maybe they just found out that they have problem. maybe they just found out they're behavior has changed in in way. what message do you have to give to them? >> there is help. you need to get in front of it right away. but people do recover. justin do you want to add? >> yeah. i mean the one thing that, um, that i've always done is pray. i mean that's really -- it, um, is the best thing to do. i mean there are resources out there and that's -- that's something we want to do with this even. we want to let people know that we do recover. that we can have a fun time in recovery

you knew about his addiction and his level of his addiction that it would end this way? >> absolutely. i mean, you know, as being in long-term recovery, i mean -- this event is not just about my brother. i was talking to gentleman the other day who lost 33 people over past few years. i mean this is an epidemic that is affecting everyone, and um, you know, so that is a reality that anyone that suffers from this, you know, could potentially die if they go back out and why we're on the front lines. that's why we're on the war path to bring as many avenues as possible together, for one common goal to help others who do struggle. so a lot of those resources will be out here this weekend, and, um, you know, as far as talking to my brother, yeah, i did. being someone in long-term recovery, i did on consistent basis, and there's nothing that i could do. i'm not that powerful. that's why, you know, brought up prayer a little earlier was that,

sexual will the. how kids grapple with social media. how girls grapple with not being a prude or slut and the pressures that they're under. i think that kids need to understand how hard it is for parents because we all don't really know what we're doing. we're just kind of hoping that we're making the right choices, you know. and how hard it is, also, i think, you know, it really -- you really are a by product of your up bringing and we really get to see that the father had a real struggle with his father, and, you know, so we get to see that we're all struggling with something and if we can understand each other just a little bit more and make a space to have conversation about how we're feeling, even around this hard -- these hard issues, the healing can begin and the forgiveness of self and the forgiveness of others and the coming together of a family can begin. if you don't talk about stuff, you're lost, and i think one of the great things about art sometimes it can -- it can promote conversation and i'm
