forever define the football great after the murders of nicole brown simpson and ronald goldman. >> simpson back in court. lauren demarco joining us with more on this. >> reporter: once again the country captivate as o.j. simpson appears in a courtroom. it was that familiar face aging questions from a parole board via video conference. the 70-year-old disgraced football star getting some unlikely help from that bruce fromong one of the his robbery victims. he called simpson a good man misled on that night in las vegas back in 2007. >> i don't feel that he's a threat. he's a good man. i know that he does a lot for other people. i feel that nine and a half to 33

>> reporter: simpson's daughter also spoke calling him her rock. the four member parole board unanimously voted to free him. he was emotional repeatedly thanking them. simpson served the minimum nine years of his up top 33 year sentence at love lock prison in nevada. he's had a mostly clean record while incarcerated coaching in the prison gym and counseling many other inmates. simpson described himself today as a now devout christian and family man devastated to have missed his dozens of children's birthdays. he says he learned his lesson and is prepared to return to the community. >> i'm not a guy that has conflicts on the street. i don't mean expect to have any when i leave her but i feel that i'm much better prepared but more so i think my commitment to being a better christian 'cause i thought i was a good guy. i had some problems with fide

hip hop and rap. the debut album sold 10 million copies. >> montgomery county police identifid a man killed inside his forest glen home last night. detectives say several people including the victim's mother were inside the house when the 20-year-old was shot in an upstairs bedroom. >> for more, paul wagner is live in the neighborhood tonight. paul. >> reporter: hey there guys. it was just before 10 o'clock last night that at least one gunman entered this house here behind me on belvidere boulevard in the 1600 block and apparently went upstairs to a bedroom and shot to death this 20-year-old. we know that at least two on the people were inside the house set but they were not harmed. now, earlier today i was able to speak briefly at the front door with the victim's mother. here's what she had to say. >> i'll give you my reaction which is pray that the person

quickly because he knows that i know that i saw him and i saw the vehicle. so, you want somebody else, i'm ready for you. that's all i have to say. >> reporter: and you're his mother. >> that's right. >> reporter: john christian webster. >> yup. so that's all i have to say. thank you will but just get that message out for me. >> reporter: this is just one of dozens of photos posted on twitter this afternoon of webster. the 20-year-old remembered with rest in peace messages with his nickname penny. montgomery county police say they received a 911 call from inside the house just before 10:00 last night alerting officers to the shooting. at least one gunman and possibly two other people had entered the house shot the 20-year-old and left in what was later described as an older model black sedan. at this hour there have been no arrests. for several hours

wishers arrived at the house to pay their respects. this postal worker spent several minutes with the victim's mother later telling reporters that she is just -- just knew the family from years of delivering the mail. most people in this neighborhood declined to comment even when we said the cameras would be off. >> detectives now believe this was a random act and that the victim and the suspect had some kind of known acquaintance or association with each other. >> reporter: this was not a forced entry into the house. >> detectives still trying to determine that, how the suspects got in. at this point they're still trying to determine if somebody let the suspect in or if there was forcible entry. that's still to be determined. >> reporter: now, two other notes in this case. one of them very unusual. early this morning when fox5 was out here reporting this story, our reporter was approached by a large group of men who threatened her telling her that she should leave the neighborhood, that the story

that incident was reported to police. also, back in late april, there was another shooting right here in this very same block. two men were arrested. they were both charged with second degree murder. we checked those men are still locked up. it's unclear if what happened here in april has any relation to what happened here last night. live in silver spring, paul wagner fox5 local news. >> ♪ >> new information tonight about what led up to the shooting of a toddler in northeast d.c. police say the shooting was over a dice game gone wrong. derrick watson charged with assault with a dangerous weapon. surveillance video captured the shooting on july 11 in an alley way off i street northeast. a one-year-old was hit in the crossfire. police are still looking for two other men seen in that video. they identified one man as saheed sulu. there's a $10,000 reward for anything leading to an arrest. the detectives are hoping the public can help them identify the thi

>> ♪ >> we are closely monitoring a story that's involving an african robotics team that's gone missing. the group was here competing in an international competition that ended on tuesday and it gained global notoriety you'll remember when teen girls on a team from afghanistan were denied visas. this morning two of the missing teens on the african robotics team were last seen leaving the united states and entering canada. fox5's tisha lewis joins us live from northwest with more on this story. tisha. >> reporter: well, sarah, the team is from barundi yet a senior counselor here at the barundi embassy said they didn't even know that this group was here in the u.s. and told their coach -- until their coach called them yesterday morning reporting them missing. what we do know is that police say that the six teens are not in danger. they also say that they are actively looking for them but would not elaborate on how. as for their visas, we're told it is

issued from barundi for a year. the teens again are between the ages of 16 and 18 years old and include four males and two females. aside from the two spotted today at the canadian border, they were last seen tuesday night again each we're told was issued a year long visa which is standard. that's what we're told from a senior immigration attorney. that's -- even though the trip here was a couple of days. police tweeted some pictures and information for the missing team this morning and they tell us they do not believe there is any suspicious activity associated with their disappearance. the barundi embassy says it's contacted the government in barundi to let them know about the developing situation. we did reach out to the state department several times today. there was no response. fur first global is the organization that hosted this international competition. they say the disappearance may have been

the teens left all their keys and mentor and chaperone's bag and removed all their clothing from their rooms. >> the presumption would be that they went to canada to seek asylum because their laws are much more favorable than ours towards refugees and asylum applicants. we would hope this would not have the impact of a chilling effect on our consular officer serving abroad and issuing the visas because they did nothing wrong. >> reporter: and that is immigration attorney jan peterson who emphasizes that the teens are here legally. she goes on to say that there is an agreement between the u.s. and canada regarding people seeking asylum, that they typically would seek asylum from the country they first landed in which means according to peterson that these teens that are at least in canada could be returned to the united states. the state d

11. >> matt ackland joins us live with a message from police we should all hear. hey, matt. >> reporter: boy, sarah this really is an awful crime. i'm standing here in fairfax on the border right down the road here is arlington county. the reason why is that authorities say that the three incidents that this man has been charged with happened in fairfax county but they believe that he may have been working in other areas. not only arlington county but all over on the dmv in the viewing area. that's why they want every one to take a good look at him. take a good look at this picture. police say if you have hired this man to do work in your home and you had young children in the home at the time, it's time to have a talk with your kids. they say he's been doing handiwork for seven years now and had many customers. >> even if you don't residin

frederick and 96 in baltimore and 91 in cambridge. so, unfortunately it's not just the heat but also humidity and that's what really makes you sweat fast when you go out on your lunch break or step out to your car which is no doubt stifling if it's not in an air conditioned garages. feels like 104 in annapolis. higher humidity by the water. 101 in martinsburg. there's nowhere to escape. it's just hot everywhere. the one good thing is we haven't had any thunderstorms again today. it's actually -- it can be outside too hot for any storms to form and that's exactly what's happening. the exception would be down towards our south. south of southern maryland in fact, just east of tappahannock we've got a couple cells and a lot like yesterday just a few rogue downpours out there and they should fade away with the setting sun in a couple hours but that's all we've got. we'll be dry here in washington this evening. 93 by 7:00 p.m., heat advisory expires thenut

grades and diplomas to inflate graduation rates among the county's public high schools. >> however, i can assure you that there is no systemic attempt to inflate graduation rates or as the letter of the governor said systemic corruption at the highest levels of the organization, it does not exist. >> the first thing you do is triage. what's just touching, what's actually sexually in nature and that's how we kind of got to where your cases exploded. these sate lawmakers want to know what the school system is doing to correct an unintended fallout from policies established by a student safety task force. with some 800 teachers and staffers placed on leave this school year, while being investigated for allegedly abusing students. >> we must remain vigilant to provide a safe learning environment for children while regaining our balance. ú>> reporter: dr. maxwell says the listing ship is being righted. >> we had a whole summer training session with principals and senior leaders this year on

>> ♪ >> this is fox5 local news at 5:00. >> we're back with your headlines at the half. not guilty. a jury in charles county maryland reaching that verdict today in the sexual abuse case against charles county teacher ronald wells. he was accused of sexually abusing two students last year. he vehemently denied the charges. he was removed from lackey high school in indian head more than a year ago when the allegations arose and was placed on a paid administrative leave. >> woodbridge woman wanted for child neglect is now under arrest. police say they found a two-year-old boy and an 11 month old girl by themselves outside of their apartment in dumfries. 30-year-old amanda allen was found asleep inside the apartment. at some point the babysitter climbed out of the bedroom window and took off. inst

with everything going on this is taking center stage. >> reporter: it certainly is, jim. clearly business has been up ended here on capitol hill in the last 24 hours with this news. now, remember this is especially hitting hard in the united states senate. that is where john mccain has served for the past 30 years and politically in that body, republicans have no room for error. they only value 52 seat majority went saw this week just how razor thin that that is in the republican's inability to repeal and replace obamacare. earlier today, arguably mccain's best friend in the senate, senator lindsey graham, gru emotional when he started talking today about his hope for mccain's return. >> it was a really tough operation but john is ready to come back and i ask one thing of the good lord, just give him a chance for what time he's got left and i've got left to be relevant. >> reporter: now, in a tweet

today, mccain himself wrote that a message to his sparring partners that he would return. now, if he does return, one of the big questions right now politically is would he stay. now, if mccain were to leave the senate as it stands right now, the republican governor of arizona would name a replacement. that replacement would serve through until the 2018 midterm elections. that is key because arizona's other senator republican jeff blake is also up for reelection in 2018, meaning that one state would have two republican seats up for election. that could dramatically shift the balance of power in the senate. of course throughout both sides of the aisle, republican and democrat, there were warm words up here for senator john mccain today, especially from some democrats. i spoke with virginia senator tim kaine. he related a story about mccain that we had not heard before, a

after losing the vice president see and being met on the floor of the senate to the man who lost the 2008 presidential election. >> mccain kind of seeks me out and comes and finds me and he says, tim, there's only one person in this body right now who understands the way you're feeling and that's me. there's other people who have run in the primaries, et cetera, but being on the national ticket and falling short at least in the senate right now it's just you and me. and we know how it feels and he said and my advice to you is just th throw yourself back into your work. so i heeded john's advice. >> reporter: of course the lesson in that is one that mccain has had throughout his life especially as his years as a pow in vietnam to keep fighting and to keep working no matter what obstacles life throws in your way. of course the tweet and the statement from senator graham today that senator mccain will return of course ther

appropriate. >> in that times interview the president said he wouldn't have picked sessions to be attorney general if he knew he would recuse himself. >> a prominent blac black lives matter act activity is making a major change deray mckesson says he plans to leave his job to focus on demonstrations and his podcast. the 32-year-old made the announcement on twitter this morning. mckesson has transitioned into the school district role after he finished in sixth place during his 2016 run to be baltimore mayor. >> a lot of people talking about this story tonight. imagine trav traveling from d.co new york in about 29 minutes. >> wow. >> it sounds like a pipe dream but maybe not. it kind of is. the man behind space-x elon musk tweeted this morning he's got government approval to speed underground travelhigh- system in the northeast corridor. problem is mayor bowser and new york mayor bill deblasio blays yo''s offices have said they don't know anything about that plan yet. if built though musk envisions a ride that would take 29 minutes between the two cities. by the way this is

>> ♪ >> a central s-w texas woman is facing drug charges after police bound to million dollars worth of meth in her car. she was pulled over for speeding. police k-9s sniffed out meth hidden in empty jugs of cleaning products. >> three words i thought i would say, speaking of meth a rbreaking bad. john ghost pleaded not guilty back in may. arrested late last year after police found drug paraphernalia in his car during a traffic stop.

[gunfire] [gunfire] >> this is pretty crazy video out of south florida. it has gone viral. police say the man in the video was mad about the at&t truck parked outside his house so he started shooting out the tires. a worker recorded the whole thing on his cell phone. the man was eventually taken into that police custody for questioning. repair crews are trying to fix a broken water main causing lots of problems in one southeast d.c. neighborhood. the main snapped earlier today on east capitol street and sent a torrent of water into the streets flooding basements of nearby homes. no one was hurt but right now we're not sure when those repairs will be finished but quite a mess they have to clean up. >> yeah especially imagine the humidity out there and trying go down in that basement that's all damp. >> i know, it won't be good. if you're ready for the heat to stop raise your hand. i can't do anything about it but, you know... >> i'm indifferent on it. >> i don't mind it either to

the dewpoints which actually for the city came down a little bit. trust me, a dewpoint of 68 is a lot better than a dewpoint of 72. so, when you get to 97 degrees and you have a dewpoint of 68 it gives you a heat index or a feels--like temperature of 102 degrees. that's where we are right now. quantico is more at 106 and annapolis 104. again, we continue with numbers like this and the heat advisory goes until 7 o'clock tonight and all up and down the i-95, it's an extreme heat warning up towards philly where their heat index values are running a little bit more than ours but pretty much the same. big thunderstorms to the north and to the northeast of us. you see right in here there's a thunderstorm box out for northeastern sections of pennsylvania into new york. there's a line forming into pennsylvania this evening. so, it's going to come together and we'll watch this all indications are once the line gets down closer to us, it should break up. there is yet another little cluster of thunderstorms that's been moving down to the south of us
