after another night of severe thunderstorms, were he got a welcome break from the heat and humidity for tomorrow. comfort seven-day forecast next at 10:00. ♪ ♪. we begin with breakig news, gop senator john mccain will return to the u.s. senate tomorrow yhe will be on capitol hill for the senate vote on a motion to proceed on healthcare reform. the 80-year-old from is battling an aggressive form of brain cancer. now, to the clean-up and the aftermath in queen anne's county maryland following a tornado overnight. i'm shawn yancy >> i'm tony perkins, we have team coverage on the storm. caitlin roth is in the weather center, lindsey watts is in allentown >> thousands are still without power tonight. >> reporter: they are about 6,

without power, according to delmarva power, we're standing in pretty much complete darkness here on marylan route eight, not a single light up and down the street and we're in the middle stevensville just a couple blocks in from the bay, this is where that tornado finally lifted off, and ended because national weather service confirming this was in fact, an ef 2 tornado hitting estimated maximum winds of 125 miles per hour, it was a fast moving tornado. covering roughly two miles in just four minutes. it started in the bay city area of island and traveled northeast here to stevensville where it ended. if we pan over you're going to go see that access is stillry restricted to the neighborhoods ravaged by the storm. maryland state police, the lead agency here, coordinating this situation on the eastern shore. but the pictures here really are the ones that speak for themselves. you're looking at skyfox now on the left side of your screen. our cameras there

to the right and it is hard to believe there was not a single fatality as a result of this tornado simply one injury and we understand that injury was nonlife-threatening. many of the homes out here just shells without roofs. but the bottom line, everyone here survived this tornado. the ground covered by endless debris, roofs lifted off, power lines down, there was a house fire earlier. some gas leaks also reported. the majority of the residents here asleep as the initial water spout moved ashore about 1:29 this morning. >> there was like a war zone up here >> shook the house. it was a really nasty storm. did a lot of damage. i have no standing trees left. >> but the house is undamaged my family is good. we're good. >> everything was shaking and crashing. it was awful. >> i came from about six miles south on the island, and there was tree downs all the way down the road

fortunate this is probably one of the more densely plated areas of island, and that we didn't have more injuries and definitely not fatalities. >> reporter: again, last check, roughly 6,000 homes and businesses without electricity. we're again standing here on maryland route eight and this is just a slew of homes and neighborhoods all without power. lindsey watts standing by about a mile up the road in the al lensdale neighborhood. lindsey. >> reporter: no power here either. in this development, there were multiple homes destroyed. roofs ripped off of properties, a woman's deck went flying, we watched today as people have been just trying to sort through the wreckage here, sort through what's left. we're a little distance away from the development, because police are keeping us back at this point, they say it's not safe to be around these homes, because of the lack of structural integrity. also, a big

deck was, that's our furniture, i can see that that's our deck and our house is down there. of. >> reporter: people spent the day sorting through the wreckage. some families learning that even though their home is still standing, the damage is beyond repair. >> in tears, devastated. this is brand new home, we just bought this last fall, moved in in november. had our first christmas and then just still -- it's just devastating. i don't know where to go from here. >> heartbreaking for people who lost everything so unexpectedly. what we've been hearing over and over again, as we talk to neighbors here is thank goodness nobody got seriously hurt. shawn and tony it's incredible considering the extent of this damage that we're seeing. >> yes, indeed. that is the miracle tonight that everybody is talking about. lindsey watts thank you. as a result of all the tornado damage, the maryland transportation authorities and local law enforcement are end in facting what they call an emergency plan for route 18

the clean-up. the ramp from 50 eastbound to route eight will be closed. the ramp from 50 westbound to route eight will only allow northbound traffic. and the ramp off route 50 to duke will be be closed. if you live south of route out eight, going east you'll need to use the access road, coming west, take route eight northern and turn around in the business park to get on route eight south. let's get caught up on what's happening out there right now. what we've heard reports of lightening out there. caitlin roth has the latest. >> i know. hate to be the bearer of bad news. rinse and repeat but we do have a severe thunderstorm. the worst looks to say just south of stevensville, kent island area, they may see rain within the next hour, i'd be remiss if i didn't recap what we've been talking about all day, ef 2 tornado confirmed late last night into the early morning hours, most of us were asleep in the bay cy

district. i know this storm woke me up when it blossomed over dc at 11:30. it was only a four-minute touchdown that began as a water spout. by the way, the storms crossing the bay that can really enhance their severe potential. and that's probably why the rotation formed and there was a tornado between 129 and 1:33 a.m. peak winds of 125 miles per hour, that's incredibly storm for this area, it's rare that we get a tornado this large. >> destructive. the last time there was an ef 2 in maryland was 2004. last time on the eastern shore was 2002. heavy storms to baltimore, part of northern maryland is now crossing the bay and we've got a severe thunderstorm warning for northern queen anne's county, parts of kent, caroline county, large hail, lot of rain and lightening especially on the northern side up by chester town, not within the severe warning but still raining on the southern flank of this line

cross the bay and bring showers, pretty quickly into the kent island area, luckily they're south of the severe part of the storm. temperatures are in the 80's right now. the good news for tomorrow, a welcome break from the heat, from the humidity, and yes, from the thunderstorms, we've three days in a row of severe weather. that seven-day forecast is still ahead. shawn? >> thank you. we have a developing story in fairfax county. man is in custody after barricading himself inside a house for hours. police responded to the house on golden oak road in centerville for domestic violence call. we do know one woman was treated at the scene for minor injuries. officers were able to get everyone out of the home, again, as we get more information, we will keep you updated. and we have an update now on the people that got sick out of chipotle restaurant in sterling, we're learning that many more people were sick end than was fi

the loudoun county health department tells us more than 135 people reported feeling sick after visiting the restaurant on triple 7 road. the customers were at the eatery between july 13th and 16th. we're told at least two people did test positive for norovirus. health to officials believe the norovirus is to blame for the outbreak. the restaurant opened last week. reopened last wednesday. when fox 5 news at 10:00 continues, a local police officer is sent to arrest a mom caught shoplifting >> instead of pulling out the handcuffs he pulled out his wallet. evan? >> the officer tells me he just had to help. the heart warming story coming up. >> thank you, evan. as you know the past few days have been rough for news and living rooms across the region >> we're dealing with the sad news that our colleague and friend jim vance lost his battle with cancer. jim died saturday morning. jim was one of the all time greats.

with the angels. >> recent medical tests now show that the treatment the parents were pursuing would not help. the director of a church daycare center in virginia facing child neglect charges she left a 2-year-old alone at the mall. someone called police to report a baby sleeping in a stroller unsupervised at potomac mills mall. crystal lundy returned to the food court about an hour later with a number of other children she was care fog after she realize the 2-year-old was missing. police charged her with felony child neglect >> did she have an explanation as to what happened >> we do know there was a large crowd with her that she was watching in the mall at the time. and that somehow, the baby got left there. >> police say lundy was in charge of the daycare at ebb niecer baptist church in wood bridge. . she turned herself in friday after learning she would be

charged. a laurel police officer sent to arrest a woman for stealing diapers for her toddler ended up buying them for the struggling family. the laurel mayor says his officers make gestures like this every day. fox 5 evan lambert spoke to the officers. evan, why did the officer decide to get personally involved in this case? >> the officer tells me he grew up in a single parent home and saw himself in that child. he says he had to do something to help the family. >> it's understood that what she did was wrong but at the same time, she was trying to take care of her child. >> reporter: police say a woman stole several packages of diapers from this laurel giant. johns got the call, he knew he walked into a complicated situation, his job is to enforce the law but his heart told him he had to do it with compassion >> his mother is going out of her way and doing what she can to provide for her kid and i can respect that. i'm

both columbia and ellicott city. mainly encompasses delaware including dover until 10:45. you can see the tail end of the storm looks pretty intense, a lot of rain and lightening, damaging wind gusts possible and that is just north of stevensville area. it is dropping southeast ward. it should clear quickly but there's stevensville just north of it we got incredible rain and also some lightening wind with that too, so it's primarily just north of where all of our damage is, but again, that's not helping. here's the one cell moving east of la plate ta. tracking that cold front as it moves southward. the storms end, skies clear, humidity lessens, we'll wake up to dry conditions, much more comfortable and a lot less hot. high temperatures even a couple degrees below normal, 85 tomorrow in dc. low 80's elsewhere. without the humidity, with the bright sunshine it will feel great and continue to feel pretty nice, i'll have
