♪. ♪ ♪. the president started a whole new debate after sending out a bench of tweets. >> he announced transgender serving on the u.s. military. you can see over there. this is the hottest story at 6:30, let's get to it. here are the string of tweets. the president sent out this morning, he wrote after consultation with my generals and military experts, please be advised the united states government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the u.s. military. our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical cost and disruption that that transgender would entail. those

it's a big major reverse value. transgender had been able to openly served since last year when ash carter ended that ban. >> the bottom line this morning, the numbers have gone around how many transgendered individuals are serving in the military. people got up this morning and found out by way twitter that the president of the united states no longer requires their services. these people serve and our military, voluntarily, is this a draft, a voluntary military in this country >> it's confusing, there's a lot of questions about, so what happens to those who are serving right now? what does this mean for them? >> let's talk about this a bit with matt thorn, the executive director of out serve. service defense network. when you woke up and saw the tweets as we did, what went through your mind. >> quite flabbergasted. we weren't anticipating this today. but it's the latest example of

sue dough policy by twitter and it's a blatant disregard for transgender members who have been serving openly since october of 2016 >> the organization helps legally with folks in the lgbt community in the service. the president said this change was all about medical costs and disruption within the military. we know there's the study that the rand corporation put out that said there would be minimal impact on readiness and we also heard minimal impact on the co so is this about transgender rights here or do you think that the president is sort of using this issue as a pawn in his campaign as he's looking forward to 2020? is this more red meat for his base >> i couldn't begin to tell you what the president is thinking. nor do i want to probably get into his head at this point. it seems to me that it's probably more of red meat, as you pointed out, the rand corporation did a study that the cost would be negligible in the overall budget

department, which sits around 650 billion dollars. i would note the cost of viagra is five times that than what it would cost for transgender healthcare. so i don't know what he was thinking about this tweet. it is red meat for the far right. and most importantly, this is throwing chaos into the military. we've had this policy in place since october of 2016 with no issues to readiness, no issues to the force. i don't know what -- was he was thinking this morning. >> we'll need a couple of seconds. but here's one thing that stands out for me. when candidate trump was on the trail and was making complains to the lgbtq community and saying i stand with you, hillary clinton supports saudi arabia, where they persecute gays and lesbians. did you beauty message back then? where did

what happened. >> i never bought the message. i think it was talk point for him. this is clear evidence that he has no respect or no indication of supporting the lgbt movement and this is another example of the united states deferring to countries around the world like canada or the u.k. or new see land or australia that the united states is not going to lead on this you be or any like climate change. >> i have one more quick question for you. have you heard from any service members? what's the plan? we're hearing reports that there will be lawsuits, what are you hearing? >> yes, we're a legal service organization, if the president moves beyond twitter and implements this policy, that we legal are one of our partners will take this case to court. and we have service members who are fundamentally have a lot of anxiety over this, this commander in chief is telling them that you don't belong in the military when they're

announcement. so basically, tangelo does not support it. i asked him was he surprised by the tweets? take a listen >> didn't just surprise me. today's announcement surprised republicans in the house of representatives. republicans in the united states senate. many of whom have actually vocalized their opposition to the tweets this morning, people thus far haven't been what i would call advocates of the transgender community but who nevertheless felt compelled to stand up. john mccain, joan me erin, or inhatchet. it if i think in the pentagon by surprise, we're talking about three tweets from the president. there has not been an executive order, no guidance issued as yet. there's still time for the president to either modify, narrow or completely disregard his tweets from earlier this morning. and we hope that he does so and

respects transgender service members in the military >> as your guess said and angelo said, these are just tweets, it's not an executive order but we did take to the streets to ask people, do you believe that transgender individuals should be permitted to serving in military? take a listen. >> yes. i think they have the same rights as anybody else. and if they're qualified, why not? >> feel like they deserve the same rights as everybody else. as long as they're qualified, and have the capabilities, there's no reason they shouldn't be allowed to serve. >> i think it's a pretty obvious thing of what's the right side of history here of human rights and equal rights, and shouldn't matter, there should be no discrimination for any reason, if someone wants to fight for our country, i don't know why we would be against that in any way. >> reporter: the tweets that we received today also sort of fell in line with those responses that you had. so certainly, if you feel differently, weigh

make it seem like they are on the side of the people who do not want them to take away their healthcare. >> the way this argument has been framed going into the vote yesterday, look, it's not a repeal vote yesterday, it was just about the process of talking. john mccain was on the floor saying can't we talk to the democrats? can't the democrats contribute to the process here? what was wrong with at least just starting the process of talking it over? >> because that's not actually what this was. if they wanted to have a process that included democrats, that would have happened a long time ago. it would have been done in regular order, they would have allowed amendment, there would have been debate but the -- the really monstrous thing here is that all of this is being done behind closed doors and they're ramming it through the senate at this break neck speed because they know that if the american people really find out and have the time to raise their voices, they will soundly reject what's going on in washington, dc right now, which

into our pockets and stealing our healthcare. they're stealing yours and my medicaid, the largest provider of long-term care in the country. they're raiding medicare, that's hour medicare. and the american people are saying no. >> alex, let's talk a little bit about those american people. who are watching and have been watching this back and forth now for the last few months for years. what's next for them? as they sit here now, wondering, they didn't repeal obamacare, obamacare needs work to it. what happens next? what happens for them >> the absolute next thing is that this is not over. they're coming after -- they're going to push trump care again. opportunity they're going to be there all night in what's called the vote rama and a final vote tomorrow, and it is very likely that they have the votes right now. this was all theater to confuse people that what their intention s

after your healthcare and the american people have to stand up and fight back and demand that we join the rest of the world, every advanced economy in the world except for ours provides healthcare as a right. it brings down costs. it increases quality. and it's just the absolute right way forward. and we can't be back in a debate where we're, you know, wonderin about propping up these insurance companies >> you know that's not going to happen. the republicans aren't -- that is -- that is nothing that's on the plate. there's no interest in that healthcare is a right idea. right now on capitol hill as it stands >> there's no interest by the republicans but what the republicans are pushing, there's no interest by the american people. the american people, it's 17% approval rating for what the republicans in the senate are trying to ram down the throats of the american people right now. so i think it's time that the senate and the house start listening to the american people

people's work to be done here at least in this case. >> you got a situation, jim and shawn where jeff sessions is under pressure and now jeff sessions will try to put pressure on the so-called sanctuary cities, they're communities that declared that they are not going to cooperate with desperately immigration law. this is a problem for federal officials. they say, if you're the immigration and customs enforcement here and you have to have somebody go out and track somebody down who was in jail, only makes it more dangerous for the federal agent who has to go out done that. so the federal government wants these local jurisdictions, these sanctuary cities, to stop doing this. how are they going to do that? last night, the justice department under the attorney general jeff sessions announced that sanctuary cities in place that is enact these policies are going to be losing federal

enforcement grants starting in september. by what criteria to declare somebody a sanctuary city and when and where they would enact this? that is not clear. but sessions has made it clear about his opposition to these policies and told a group in philadelphia, just days ago, that this kind of policy, the sanctuary cities, put both the public and police at risk. >> this growing cooperation has been impeded by policies of certain states, cities and counties, some jurisdictions in this country refuse to cooperate with the federal government when it comes to immigration authorities. to turn over illegal aliens who commit crimes, even ms 13 members, these are called sanctuary policies. but they are, but they're giving sanctuary not to

citizens, they're providing sanctuaries to criminals. >> reporter: now, language is important here, because some of these communities who officially have not declared themselves sanctuary cities are being treated as sanctuary cities by the federal government. case in point be right here in our neighborhood, montgomery county and prince george's county last spring wound up on a list of 142 jurisdictions across the country from ice who they declared were not cooperating with federal immigration law. jim and shawn, we spoke to montgomery county police this morning, they say they've not heard anything officially from the justice department. they are studying it. they are going to try to figure out what effect this would have on them. if the justice department were to cancel all of their law enforcement grants. right now, you got a lot of jurisdictions, a lot of departments across the country up in the air right now. exactly what the effect this is going to be. >> that seems to be what we've seen from the trump administration so far, there was ruling that came down

the threat of pulling money from sanctuary cities couldn't do that. is it a matter of finding other ways to implement that by not going the direct route they proposed >> there's also a hand of congress in this, some of these funds were declared by congress. there's a separation of powers question of powers as well. are congress deems for law enforcement to do its job able to be cancelled by the administrative arm of the government. you may have a situation where the courts step in. from the administration's standpoint this is promise they said they made, this is a promise they now say they're delivering on, and in about six weeks, we'll start finding out whether or not they will follow through on this and start cancelling these law enforcement grants >> thank you, fitz. not to change the subject i like your tie. it makes your eyes pop too, fitz. >> my eyes pop quite often but not at things like ties and suits and thing. >> thank you,
