about congress heights defining you as a person. what has congress heights given to you? >> real sense of history. an appreciation of the city. look we're standing here on the campus of saint elizabeth which was the country's very first mental hospital, and that came out of the whole movement to try to make things better particularly for those people who are living in the shadows of life. so even here in congress heights and we have very many challenges, the people here look at it an opportunity to work with people to make things better. this community has completely changed. this was founded in 1890. and this was a community that had restricted -- restrictive racial could have nance. it was predominantly white community. it's completely changed. becoming more diverse and only in congress heights do

of the most terrifying films i've seen in a long time. it's a war film. >> 100%. >> we know the three men were killed but the police officers were never formally charged with murder. which is very frustrating considering how many witnesses there were. i know the film is drama tieing certain elements of it. can you talk about that frustration because that really -- i it still bothers me. >> when we think of the word riot the first thing we think of is criminals. >> exactly. >> criminal behavior. criminal activity. i think that what this film d does, it explains it more of a rebellion. you know when you think of rebellion you think, okay, you know, boston tee party was rebellion. the need to be heard when you feel that at a certain point you're not being heard. and we're always talking about how do we heal the divide, upping, between, you know, the community and the police and so many different aspects at play, and the first thing where it

starts is hearing each other. less listen to each other. you can't start to heal until you're heard and i think this movie that's what it shows. it's what happens when you're not being heard. when you're crying and you're pleading look, listen to me this is going on and those -- those pleas are being ignored. >> what role do you play in the movie? what drew you to this movie? >> i play congressman john conyers. and, um, you know, he is someone who is tremendously important to the city of detroit also important here in d.c. he's still one of the longest standing congressman. 88 years. >> he's on twitter. he's awesome. >> twitter, instagram on capitol hill fighting every day the good fight. so it was an honor to play him and honor to work with catherine bigelow she's one of, you know, my buck list of directors that i want to do one day have the opportunity to work with and itt with her on this film particularly. >> maureen mentions the role. can you talk about any meetings you had with him and what his reaction been to the film and your portrayal?

for the first time. >> first time. >> i met his children first. i met his wife as well. i studied hours and hours of tape and videos of him speaking and, you know, just to really get down his -- listism isms to portray him accurately on film. i think more than anything, you know, he also wanted to be heard. you know, he needed to be heard, and what he wanted to do was, make sure that his constituents that his city everybody made it home safely. and unfortunately, at that point they couldn't hear him. you know, so i think that's just -- that's a lesson for us in today's times we all need to start listening to each other and hearing each other out. em pathetically as human beings. we're all in this together. >> i love your passion when you talk about this. i think that's what's drawing me so much to this. you talk about this from not just an actor's perspective but someone living in america and really cognizant of what's happening which i think some people miss. this is not just art. this is life. we need to make sure that we take
