say. that is a statement of fact. >> north korea has talk about launching missiles toward guam and co coming weeks us territory with a large military presence whom can dissuade kim probably china who sided with the united states at the united states nations over the weekend but there are limits. report a stay run newspaper there says china should stay neutral if north korea attacks first but if the us strikes first, it should intervene. and the president's tough talk may be aimed at china as much as anyone else. >> china has the ability to influence north koreans and this is the moment to do it. >> now meantime the us an south korea in coming weeks will engage in military exercises. something that north korea sees as a provocation. all right. let's switch gears and we have breaking news now. in an exclusive right here on fox5 d.c. police chief peter newsham told us investigators have made one arrest in the shooting on saratoga avenue in northeast. >> we've been talking about this story all

shooting happened yesterday afternoon in broad daylight. now a teenaged girl caught in the crossfire is fighting to stay alive. fox5's melanie alnwick is live at police headquarters with all the details. melanie? >> reporter: good morning. and dc police tell us the 17-year-old she's officially listed in critical condition. it is very very grave circumstances here. the injuries are very traumatic and as we know life-threatening. let's tell you a little bit more about the arrest. d.c. police say the suspect who was arrested is philip mcdaniel. he's 21 years old from northeast d.c. it is possible that there are more suspects. we had heard perhaps two or more who they are also looking for in this case. mcdaniel is charged with assault with intent to kill. chief peter newsham saying that this is just another one of the senseless acts of violence at the end of an illegal gun. this story right here this is a really tra? ick story i got an opportunity to speak to the mi

this is young lady who is very excited about starting her college career down in florida in just about ten days. and now she's in a hospital struggling for her life. anything that the public can do to assist us in bringing them to justice we would appreciate. >> reporter: it was 3:30 in the afternoon with a teen girl was driving her car you'll see it here. a white sedan with a young pre-teen in the vehicle as well as she came across saratoga and montana avenues northeast there was a blast of gunfire. sources tell us the teen was struck in the head. a man was also shot. now initially as we've been reporting, it was believed that he was a passenger in the girl's car. detectives are now telling me that he was literally just another bystander walking in the street. dc police again saying they were not the intended targets. we also spoke with people in the neighborhood who said that they had heard the gunfire and heard reports of gunfire and that people were shooting 15 minutes

happened and they were frustrated and curious as to why the shooting continued and ended up with this young girl being shot. d.c. police did say they did respond to that initial call for the shots fired. they did -- came out and did an investigation but they were not able to figure out who what was doing the shooting one of things they need here in many case like this had he need the public to come to talk to them and let them know who has illegal guns, who's shooting off their guns. the investigation here continues. as for that young person who was in the car with the teenager, we are told that he or she is a relative, not injured physically but you can imagine the emotional trauma. live outside dc police headquarters, i'm melanie alnwick, fox5 local news. >> thanks. mel in that same sit down with the chief last hour he spoke to us about a number of crime and justice issues in the district one huge case we spoke to him about was the shooting death of sterling -- terrence sterling, cues me

police officer. this week prosecutors decided not to press charges against the officer brian trainor is his name because of insufficient evidence. mayor muriel bowser has called for that officer's resignation and the chief tells us the dc police department is working towards finding out what happened here as well. >> the police department has reached out to the officer's attorney and there are discussions about a resignation but that has not been concluded at this point. i can tell was i really want to make sure happens through this process is that we don't have something like this happen again in our city. i have met with the sterling family. this is an incredibly sad story. they lost their 31-year-old son, um, and they have a lot of questions that they want answered and i think it's our responsibility through this investigation first of all to do it as quickly as we can and get them the answers that they deserve. >> meantime the sterling family has filed a civil suit against the d.c.

$50 million. all right. let's take it to prince george's county now. the seat pleasant maryland police chief continues to recover at the hospital this morning after being involved in a serious motorcycle crash in the county. fox5 broke this story to you last night. officials say chief devon martin crash his motorcycle with another vehicle in the 6100 block of mlk, jr., highway in sea pleasant around 8:45 last night. he has broken leg and few broken ribs. we're told he is expected to be okay. all right. let's switch gears and move to sports now. all the optimism the redskins felt coming out of the first few weeks every training camp gone for some people. because last night's% preseason game battle of the belt ways in baltimore turned out to be a dud. but really it's the first preseason game so was it really that big of a deal. >> the injuries. >> all right. redskins were only able to put three points on the board. kirk cousins went three and out on his two possessions for the game completed one out of two passes. skins were only able to muster 47 yards of offense by half time making

humidity though. you can kind of feel that as you get your day started. satellite/radar sun is up you can see the satellite starting to populate with the clouds they have just kind of moved in and they will sit steady through most of the day. sun may poke through in spots. you can see around harrison burg there little bit of sun breaking out but for the most we're in for mostly cloudy day with a couple of showers right now most of them west i81. as we kind of expand things out you can see not much going on just yet. a front will approach from the south and kick more and more up as we head through the afternoon. here we are at 2:30. future cast showing a little bit more rainfall activity coming into the dc region and then off to the west maybe some thunderstorms through the panhandles work our way towards your evening commute we'll have to watch for showers and thunderstorms once again nothing too widespread. but those that get stuck under one of these storms you'll know it's storming could come down rather heavy of course we're watch out for the nats game tonight hopefully we can get through without major delays. we'll keep an eye point future cast really kind of settling in on the late evening hours here in d.c. as our best chance for maybe some heavier storms

it's a segment we call first responders friday and this morning our very own kevin mccarthy is hanging out with the team from culpeper county volunteer fire department. good morning to you, kevin. >> good morning. i'm absolutely honored to be here with assistant chief per are you man from the culpeper county volunteer fire depth. it's an honor to talk to you sir. >> thank you for coming in. before we get into the details talk about the area you specifically cover. you have eight different departments here. your department has 60 volunteers. 45 active. >> that's correct. we cover the about 5-mile radius around the town of culpeper run mutual aid out into the county to assist the other department. >> you have very active recruit many talk about the recruitment you've actually been in the department for 34 years. talk about the active recruitment you have. >> what we're looking for is anyone whose willing to volunteer. stop by the station, pick up an application. we have website that's up and running. telling a little bit about the department. how to join. what the

so if you have the time and the desire stop by and see us. >> talk about the length of time you have volunteers here. you were just telling me the decades of work people have been putting in at your department. >> there's -- we have a lot of volunteers who have been with the department. volunteering for 20, 30, 40 years and still very active. there's a role for everyone no matter how long, whether you've been here a month or decades. >> it's still a amazes me as volunteers you have these full-time day jobs. you guys are putting all this work in. off lot of meetings obviously. but technology over the years has been so interesting to me in regards to the alert systems. you still use pagers. >> we still use pagers. a lot of the rural dements still use the siren the horns. >> yeah. >> we get a text message saying that there's an emergency. that we need to respond. so when we get that, we acknowledge it so that the department, the station knows that we're en route. then when we get here we hop in our gear, hop on the trucks and then we go do our thing. >> you and i were sitting over there. i was geeking out a lit
