the removal or relocation of several confederate statues that sit in the city's most historic district. men while, there's also calls to take down the 12 sculptures here inside the us capitol of people who were once part of the the confederate states of america. confederate monuments in baltimore are taken down. residents stood by as cruise removed statutes of robbed e. lee, thomas stone wall jackson and others. and saint john's church in brooklyn new york a long-standing plaque dedicate to do general lee was removed wednesday. the chaos in charlottesville, virginia has sparked nationwide debate over statues, plaques and memorials bearing the name of figures from the confederate e era. the main argument for removal is that they're reminders of slavery. one chicago historian says he understands calls for the mayor to rename washington park. but he thinks the debate should be about learning. >> i think some of these monuments could

a press conference and another press conference he placed some of the blame on the victims saying that they were good people on the side of the nats cease an and kk. if you had a chance to talk to him face to face, you're a republican strategist, if you had chance to talk to him face to face what would you tell him? >> actually, after it happened on saturday the statement went out on monday i reached out to the white house and i was very clear. i said, president trump needs to get in front of the cameras today. there's no time to wait. statement isn't good enough. he needs to get in front of the cameras and we need to have a national dialogue on race and very clear explicit terms like senator obama did in 2000 i was. obviously he went before the cameras. he made a statement and then he had the press conference the day later i believe that was. >> um-hmm. >> when i saw it and i saw it on the tail end, i just couldn't believe what i saw. i was shocked. i was

i was disgusted. i immediately put out tweet president trump doesn't understand race relations in america. i watched it again. then i found out that i was going to be on fox and friends the next day and it was something that i had to talk about because i couldn't even sleep on the issue. i was really emotionally drained and hurt by what the president said and i was reminded that my grandfather who grew up in he helen, arkansas where there was a hot bed of racism and clan activity. so literally, i'm viewing this from the lense of family. so this is really hurting me on deep and personal level here. >> next question from a stat gist stand point, should the president get in front of the camera again not only twitter but in front of the camera again and this time try to make some kind of apology about what he said the last time he was in front of the camera? >> the president isn't capable apology. at this point it really appears he's incapable of empathy. this president

in getting in front of a camera and saying i'm sorry about anything. and truthfully speaking, he made note of that yesterday. he doesn't apologize for the press conference he had and that's one of the reasons why i'm speaking out. i'm encouraging conservatives and republicans everywhere to also speak out, because if you continue to encourage and defend the president on issues like this, especially issues of race, we can fight about tax reform and health care and policy issues, that's -- those are important things and impact our daily lives, absolutely, but when it comes to issues of race, that's very very serious very personal thing that has the potential to be extremely dangerous because literally people white vest mist and others. we cannot defend the president's rhetoric especially when it comes to race relations in america. we need to get together and speak as one voice whether it be democrat or republican, and make it very clear that we

party say, all right, knock it off. enough is enough. we got business to take care of. we are the republican party. this is not what we stand for. knock it off. >> you know, during the election i wrote a piece, um, donald trump is divorced him from the republican party and started the party of trump, and i think that's what we're pretty much going back to much this was after he attacked paul ryan the way that he did earlier in the campaign. i think president trump is allowed and created an environment that has become very difficult for anything to get done legislatively or pretty much anything. even when there's some good things he does, it's beneficial to the economy, bringing jobs in, those kinds of things, when those things happen, we talk about it for all of an hour. before he says something ridiculous on twitter. this is where we are in the country in our country, and we cannot be complicit and the defense of president trump when we know that he's going to step on the
