steve bannon out as chief strategist. >> as you can see from the run down, this is the hottest story at 6:30, tweet us what's on your mind about all of this and all things political. use #5at630. bannon leaves his post days after the white supremacist rally in charlottesville virginiaed he allegedly championed mr. trump's argument about both sides at fault in the violence, however, steve bannon is getting attention because of an interview where he seeming the under cut the president's threats of retaliation against
6:31 pm
quote, no military solution, forget it. bannon helped him within presidency but has become a controversial figure during his time >> a lot of infighting with ivanka, jared kushner, there's been talks it's been strained behind the scenes, not a lot of good friends he has there >> since john kelly was brought on, general john kelly a lot of speculation he's one of the people that kelly would likely want to see out. because he is such a lightening rod figure. >> high profile. let's bring in niles standage for from the hill. there's a lot to break down, first, let's start with the fact this has been rumored this was coming before, but who and what do you believe was kind of the final push to get him out the door? >> i think a couple of things, sarah, you mentioned john kelly becoming chief of staff. that had a big impact. kelly perceived to want to cut down on
6:32 pm
in the white house but the north korea point that tony alluded to one of my sources was saying it was that that was the final straw. because the white house was trying to lay out a strategy trying to basically suggest there could be military action as a deter ent and bannon said it's not going to happen >> seems like it's a possible exit strategy for anyone who wants to be fired. do an interview or something, where you seem to contradict or overshadow the president >> i think the second point you made about overshadowing the president is very important. it was back in february when steve bannon was featured on the cover of time magazine, that in itself caused a pretty serious upset in the white house and the oval office in particular, and there has always been the suggestion that steve bannon is such a strong personality and is
6:33 pm
publicity around himself. that that rubs the president the wrong way. >> with each person that seems to exit, the administration, we always seem to ask, is this going to look different moving forward when it comes to the agenda and how things operate there at the white house. do you think this will be a significant change with bannon leaving? >> i think, sarah, that steve bannon present himself pretty much as a disrupter. he was proud of that reputatio: i guess by taking him out you could have a smoother or somewhat orthodox white house. in saying all of that, this is president trump we're talking about he's young lady a highly unorthodox and somewhat volatile figure. i don't think this mean this is go the to suddenly assemble the george w bush white house or something like that >> this is a theory that i have. i think this is could potentially help president trump and help
6:34 pm
trump seems susceptible to whatever the last person at night says in his ear, bannon clearly had a lot of influence, is it possible that with bannon gone we might see somewhat steadier of president trump >> it is possible and in fact, people who are of the hard right and are bannon loyalties worry about that, they worry it's going to be the more establishment figures who do get the last word in the presidency. but i think the whole debate about that topic, tony points to the issue that you're raising, that if you have more conventional advisors, you could, at least have a somewhat more conventional presidency. >> another interesting friday. what will it look like next friday, niles? >> thanks so much, niles white house columnist with the hill. police now made a fourth arrest in connection with yesterday's terror attack in barcelona,
6:35 pm
also another attack nearby, this time, police shot and killed five terrorists wearing bomb belt. police final officials are saying one of those could have been the driver in the barcelona attack. death toll rose to 14. the mother of heather heyer. the woman killed in charlottesville last weekend told abc news she hasn't spoken with president trump and she will not. she's upset after he said there's blame on both sides. strike, interview. this is a woman has continued to be rather impressive, and shown some amazing strength but she was pretty -- she said in an interview this morning on abc that the white house had reached out one of the first times they reached out was during the funeral. she wasn't even home, and you know, many have said shouldn't the white house know the funeral was going on? there were a lot of questions. of joining us to try to untangle
6:36 pm
news reporter. so, let's talk about the fact that seals to this day, correct me if i'm wrong, that there's been no signs that president trump has even really acknowledged the death of heather heyer. >> right. so that is one thing that her mother had said today. he's tried calling her a few times. he had acknowledged it on twitter. and he had reached out to her, susan bro said who is her mother. he hasn't acknowledged it on camera, a lot of people said it was wrong, pence did and some others but trump didn't himself >> whether you are a trump supporter or not, i believe it would be hard to argue this has not been a devastating week for the white house, i think the most criticism we've seen of president trump not just from democrats but from his own party. where is he likely and where is this administration likely to go from here? >>
6:37 pm
point for the trump administration many of the alleys's people, top members of the republican party weren't really speaking out to defend him. there was very noticeable lack of that in the days following his response. people didn't want to associate themselves with trump after he made those controversial remarks. and so moving forward, i think trump might have to -- roam knee came out and said he needs to address what happened and unless he does that there still might aboulatta of plunging distancing themselves >> we were talking about steve bannon before with niles, but there's a lot of people that have acknowledged saying he was sort of behind the whole strategy of blaming both sides. which the president has come out now, you know, couple times, and has said do you think with bannon, not being in that position, that perhaps someone will be able to get to the president to say, you know what? maybe we should go back
6:38 pm
at this in and address it in a different way? >> that was the hope when chief of staff john kelly came on, they hoped that he would maybe reign trump in and some of the more off-the-cuff remarks he's made, now with steve bannon leaving some people think that might be the case, but trump is his own person, he's a controversial figure himself. so it's really unclear what will happen. >> he is his own person. but a lot of the things that he said, particularly on tuesday, in what everyone is calling the off the rails press conference, they seemed very much like steve bannon type words. then yesterday, i've seen videotape of trump from two years a ago saying he thinks confederate statue should be taken down. he's held almost every position you can hold on an issue seems. >> right. this is a classic case of trump flip flopping. of he, lot of what people think it was was him bulking under the pressure. origin
6:39 pm
out with knives re-do of his remarks in charlottesville, he couldn't condemned these groups. i think trump definitely taken a lot of advice from steve bannon and i think this was probably a week he did listen to him. moving forward with him gone, there might be a change. reporter with the politico news. thanks for coming in >> we have active weather going on, strong storms, will join us >> i mentioned earlier they did not like the look these thunderstorms coming across dc, i thought they were producing incredibly heavy rain and main r maybe training and just issued flash flood warning for the district of columbia, arlington, fairfax, montgomery county and this will go until 9:00:30. localized flooding has been reported inside the beltway here. so we'llon

from very heavy rain. look at this. this is like the third real heavy cell moving right across northwestern and central and northern sections of dc and inside the beltway too up towards college park there. just a little bit south of silver spring. the heaviest of the rain right now is right inside the beltway. so that's the reason why the flash flood warning has been issued. still in place, severe thunderstorm warning until 6:45. this storm continues to move to the east, 20, 25 miles per hour, heavy rain, but it's moving fast enough. this might be the next spot up in here to the northeast of us and just east of i95 towards 97, in the bay there, that we could have another flash flood warning issued and still in place until 6:45. this is calvert, charles, prince george's county as this continues to be a very strong storm and it's got two cores, one headed off

lingering back in charles county. another very strong storm there, expect hail with wind gusts of about 60 miles per hour, big picture here, all of this is moving outlet slowly. expect heavy rain for the next couple of hours, we got to get front to the east of us, once the front is to the east, things will calm down quite a bit. this weekend still going to be warm, temperatures in the upper 80's. but good news, dry and not so darn humid. it's been unbelievably humid. that's the weather forecast, we'll have more coming up if we need to. tony, sarah, before a, over to you. >> thank you be much. removing hate or rewriting history? a closer look what the panel of distinguished guests coming up next.

button son, senior editor national catholic editor. >> a lot of us see everything that happened particularly last weekend, there is great division in this country, and it is hard sometimes to take it all in and be optimistic about our future. >> absolutely. >> how do you council people who feel that way >> well, i think the most important thing is to remember that there is refuge and so for us, especially in the faith community, we want to be able to provide a respite aplace where people can come and get that encouragement and also just to remind us that we don't get our identity from what other people have to say about us. all like me and my children my son will come to me and say so-and-so said such-and-such about me. and it's hard for me as father of a small child just to say you know what? you don't get your identity from what other people say. i'm your

you get your identity from me. and so in the church particularly in the faith community, it's important for us to remind our folks we don't get our identity by what somebody else's kid says about you or your. our message is making sure we listen to the right report. >> that's good advice, you write for the national catholic register, have you been writing about this topic and if so, what is it that you're noticing and hearing from people in the catholic community >> absolutely. i would direct everyone in fact to a brilliant piece written by a british retail by the name of joseph pierce who is an ex-white supremacist. very active in england and his story is one of conversion, that you can come from this place of deep seeded hate and the answer, of course, is for christians, romans

st. paul writes that where sin abounds, grace abounds even more. it's the recognition of evil in the world, but recognizes also that love is stronger than evil. but it's also a grappling with some of the root calls thes of it. where does this come from? where does the hate come from? it comes from a variety of source, social fragment ation, break down of the culture. a famous theologian st. august in. it starts with us, providing lessons >> rabbi garrett, i want to bring you into this, we saw some very ugly statements being chanted in charlottesville last weekend. your reaction to what you saw, what you witnessed watching on tv wherever you were, and the things that you're hearing from some of your congregation. >> thank you.

about that and then speak directly to the jewish community for a minute i'm so moved to be able to have this movement. i'm seeing sort of mix of shock and not shock. comparing to when someone died and you know that the death is imminent but it's really different when it actually happens. and in jewish community things things have been with us, anti-semitism and hate are in our lives and world, still when something this blatant happens and visit and potent, and it's still shocking, for me we're about to enter into the holy sabbath and this week's portion reminds us that life is filled with blessings and curses and what we saw in charlottesville was a mix of both, the curses of hate that we can on our community and incredibly brave and courageous and loving people who remind us
6:50 pm
my prepare so much tonight is that the jewish community plans comfort where we experience and remember and see and sense and smell and enjoy with our loved ones the blessing of what it means to be a jew in this world. and to remember that that endures, that endures. and no curses that are unleashed on us, meeting as and he canible as they are, they are fleeting, and that endures. blessing we can bring to this world endures and no one >> kind of what dr. manning said as well, that you create your own identity, nobody else, you know, is going to create it for you. you are who you are. it's a similar message. you know, through all faiths. i think at this point. >> yes. >> rabbi garrett in her we thank you for joining us, i wish we had more time to talk about this because i have a lot more
