5:01 pm
rain move by and rain moved in. >> amazing. >> heavy rain. >> as a matter of fact mike thomas's story and we have severe weather now. >> holding it off until it impacted. >> just by don't know if that had anything to do with it. it may have taken sizzle and sun for a little but as soon as totality was over and partial 81% for us everything popped. so just want to show you quickly we are aware you had severe thunderstorms in stafford and charles and s st. mary county and we want you to be aware of that. not everybody is seeing storms but we have a tornado warning now. that changed. i'm going to get you the latest. >> go over there. >> we'll get you up to date on that. that's tornado warning for parts of st. mary county and i'll get you updated that just happened. >> hang on you're saying for a quick second you go check the xhurdz one more time say again sue so we know where it's coming through. >> that is i'm
5:02 pm
it up now jim and it was severe thunderstorm warning for charles and st. mary county and now it has been changed over and red indicate that tornado warning. let me populateest warning on and read it to you you hire this is until 5:30 obviously this thing found rotation and there's quarter size hail possibly in it. this is nine miles iingt of pope creek and south eekt at 10 miles an hour. let me move this out of the way to see it we get in tight on some communities. so you know charles county it really is barely in your area a tiny bit of that region. so this is mostly for st. mary's country. this is radar indicated guys. it what not spotted but let me pull up the tags. radar seeing rotation. >> they're to the seeing it physically and looking at it
5:03 pm
computers say that's going to be the case. as you look at this it's amazing how quickly this ink chad. we started a knew moments ago talking about severe weather in the after math of the eclipse and now certainly formulating with in what counties. >> mostly st. mary's county. if there's good news this is west central st. mary and southern tip of charles. this is areas brushwood, clem epts, compton, organza somewhat rural. your wig return this is moving southeast at 10. it looks like it's trying to develop a hook. i'll pause this and this is the area not far from c chattaco. i'm click the lightning off. you know there's a lot there. we want to see where more important part of the storm is. buds creek, madism. chatco. we'll give you a
5:04 pm
there will be hail core. i'll check for hail. the reason we always watch for hail with the storms is that in indicator of where you may have an up draft strong enough to produce a tornado. in this area we have good amount. hail right arounds 2:34 we can get inside with this radar. let me see where my hail indicator is and we'll see how big in this green area hail -- well that's significant guys. when you get hail to the size of inch an a half that's prediction based on what our radar is seeing. that would indicate you may be seeing a storm strong enough with up draft to approach that. that's approaching 2:34. what i'll do is tools with the radar here i'll take the emof this storm we'll put a path on it we know it's moving southeast headed to 23 4
5:05 pm
there it is where will it be in next 10, 11, miles again notice a lot of cities are not pop lay lateing what we put that up. that's important i'm say this tornado warnings goes until 5:30. high radar. large hail in it to put that in motion again. some of the things we can do is take a look at when we have severe storm like this we can often get indication for what else is going on with the starm. let's put on indicators and this will pop on a radar fi first. you see the most up tense part of the storm. this is showing us rotation in this area where you see the arrows, thompson corner, might be near you, white m comic owe to buds
5:06 pm
it will go until 5:30 if they sense retation going away they may take it down sooner. let us know what you see down. there tweet us a picture. we have a lot of folks that watch "fox5" in the region. i can't believe this is not in a populated area. small portion here. >> let me ask you sue when you started the show we had severe thunderstorm warning 4:51 it up graded neighbor to minute later is that uncommon to see it upgrade quickly. >> no notal all jim you moneyed we have is tornado warning we're watching and other severe storms producing hail. any one of these could begin a process of rotating. this one is not warned and that is coming across the potomac headed to charles county.
5:07 pm
thunderstorm warning here and let's but this up. we have a lot more people living in this area and hail is showing up at this unwith and there's a little bit of hail. you don't see intensity like you see in st. mary county. so not as big of a hail. this is around remmington and let's see how big that hail is as we one inch hail. it gets to be the size of quarters and that is a rigger for severe storm. but again getting back to our storm in st. mary county and hey this is eclipse buster isn't it. just when we thought we would talk about something super exciting with our eclipse which it was. >> this is exciteing too. >> this is exciteing too right. >> so what we seen
5:08 pm
3450ed d.c. but they were concerned about the cloud cover coming through and i saw the lightning in the distance across the potomac in the virginia area and that's the storm system that came through this part of montgomery county and really started coming in and putting a damper on th things. everybody is outside when you look at that the. >> good sign the hail we've within watching is not as big. a few minute ago we were looking at up. and a half. a sign maybe our storm is it weakening and put this in motion green shows up tense and what i'm doing jim when we look at reports and pull up hail as well as radar. same watching to see in nip is reporting any of these has anyone seep a funnel cloyd. >> weather watches or anybody reporting these to the no notional weather service. >> people who are certified as weather spotters that we can trust they're knowing what they're saying. i'm
5:09 pm
seeing a funnel cloud yet and not seen anyone reporting that they have seen hail to the size of one in. . again not an area that is very helply populated in this region which is a good things. we'll go out of hail mode now. tremendous. >> that's amazing. >> amount of lightning with that. one of the things we can do here and lightning? we worry about tornado owes we get people out of the way what injuries more people ligh lightning. the last 30 minutes we had 18 strikes. chatco seems to be the most intense part of the storm right now and that's the area that if you're watching in that area you want to get out of the way. we'll get in here this area you have intense rain and hail. it's approaching:38 i was trying to slow this down this goes by fast and let's take this is the last 30 minutes as we
5:10 pm
yeah you can see this in motion moving southeast 10 miles an our and see if we can get any other little communities in the path. this is pretty much worst of it right here. still going strong i have not seen anything ending marine warnings from pool's island to sandy point and could be island worried about some stormset getting close for the bay in a little while as well. >> so for people tuning in this is tornado warning now effective until 5:30. >> 5:30, charles county and st. mary county. >> let me get the latest update as we look at it again this is sdopler indicated jim moving southeast at 10 miles an hour. when it's doppler oriented. let's see if we can find. it still rotating.
5:11 pm
weather service seize that and they indicate they need to put up a tornado warning. when you have a storm with internal rotation and strong up draft able to drop the hail have we no not had a history of weak tornadoes this year i think 20 of them. >> i was wondering because you were talking about rotation sue will anybody see anything? i mean this is not a point anything comes down from the sky. it's something -- >> well what you would look for sarah this is tough one. this has so much rain, hail, my first indication would be if you're in an area getting hail now go to the basement. you want to get in interior room away from windows take cover this is brushwood, clemens, as you heard me mention marganza chattico mount victory way comb
5:12 pm
you want to move to basement or interior room on the lowest floor. avoid windows in outdoors and driving in this get to as soon as possible stabling shelter. you don't want to be caught in the wind with this and don't want to be daughter if there's debris. take that little indicator o off. let's see where that s let take that off and again let's drill down as far as we can. it doesn't want to come off. let's try getting back to radar and i'll click off the lightning which makes it hard to see. but obviously that dark red color indicates most intense portion ever the storm s can we get even down to some neighborhoods you recognize these roads. not that familiar. ten top school trod east lakeland drive this will be and i'll put this in motion for the last 30 minutes or so why it's goting to really intense right there right now. these
5:13 pm
yowalski maui road this is the most intense part of storm. let's click on sheer see what we're seeing with this as well and what we're looking for here is the -- we want to see red and green bumped up together not necessarily this sikt but strong winds in. there let's see if we can get an requested of how strong that might be. 47 miles an hour. significant. that's enough to take down some tree limbs and produce damage. back to our storm click off lightning and again we'll put this in motion and still checking now to see if we're getting ground truth. tornado warning in effect goes to 5:30 and yeah man mother nature way to hijack the other part of the show. st. mary county very small part of charles country as well. charles
5:14 pm
coming in aarr area i don't mean to ignore other areas with greater population and tornado warnings awls get attention because of the damage they canen picture to. we remind you this is severe thunderstorm. could this rotate at some point it could. we watch the hail and other signatures with it. this one goes until 5:3, fauquier, prince pill yum, stafford, when strongs cam through whether rotation or straight line gusts to these or branches could fall they injured people outdoors and roadways can and that's why we really want to you take these seriouslyet and get out of the way. let's take a minute to check this one we will continue to watch our warndz tarnado b barked store which looks ib tense here and m
5:15 pm
east so miles an hour. likely with heavy rain as we look towards maryland not much going on. baltimore had strong storms and got you back down to this one and reis the a little to show you that this tornado warning is for very small portion of charles county and st. mary's until 5:30 and strong enough in the september to support a tornado if one were spotted and nobody has said they've seep a funnel but radar has indicated rotation. we have not seen debris but it would be a sign that something is going on. there so we'll put this in motion for the last 45 minute here. sue how quickly is the storm moving do you expect it tlou throe through those areas in the next five, ten minutes. >> that's the problem with this sarah it's moving slowly. it's 34506ing southeast 10 mimes an hour
5:16 pm
see tornado storm the element we're seeing moves north east this is southeast at 10. that's rather slow. it will be getting close to route 5 looks like here and 242. it looks like worst of it is across route 234 as we get into central portions of m mary county and this has a little ways to go before they have to make some changes to the warping. but, again, this is bushwood, clemens, compton, morgana, mount victory. tin top hill. a lot of communities and again if we put this in motion the last 45 minutes you see where the intense color s let's again fan this out and see if we can catch leonardtown. we're right in the path of that if this konsz continues going strong and i go to leonardtown california bigger
5:17 pm
hope this will be less than ten form it is definitely still holding together as we put it in motion. the worst may be passing north or west of leopard town. when it gets closer to you. check my warning. this is well not in our area. but they are canceling out okay tornado warning for charles cancelled. what they've done is trimmed that back. it was only a small portion. radar indicated that there i might be sir laix and in s st. mary county the doornado warning continues until 5:30. >> i want to give people a heads up we're getting reports in charles county that there are downed trees in the la plata area significant which would of course equate to what we're seeing here
5:18 pm
>> previously sim and sarah we will have a severe thunderstorm about that, about 6:0 i think at that point it was straight line wind damage. even sew that's significant. >> while we're going through the maps again we should reiterate for people tuning in. we have two situation as i severe thunderstorm warning for stafford, prince william, fauquier and then in maryland we have a tornado warning. >> just for st. mary's. >> by the way i got another report and this is flash flood report not in areas we're watching these had very heavy rain. >> baltimore area. >> it's howard county and it's khunty of hanover 4:14 they say maryland westbound lane closed because you know it was trop beingly humid today. the other storms moving slowly without rotation have a trem ep us amount of rain in them sglem if are you in in areas
5:19 pm
if it's safe shows is what you're saying and send to eeshl madeia we want what you're seeing but it's another to see it first happened obviously is pretty important as well. >> in fact let's do that too, jim, ar after, kind ref set so fem see what we're talking about. we're looking towards mving county and was affecting part of howard country. rain south of baltimore and we've had another move through in the buoy area. that's not a war storm that's the storm jim was talking about in stafford and looks like that got trind as well. something dropped out. it is not as big as it was. >> skushlly has hail to the eyes of quarter and current up to of. moving east 39. that could produce tree
5:20 pm
i'll go over and check tore made 'warned storm and that's in st. mary country. they're did they change charles to severe thunderstorm like something may have kuxing changed and no i'm not sure -- >> it looks like they may have just taken st. mary's country. i want to make sure this is not old this says charles and st. mary now in severe thunderstorm warning. but i'm not seeing any indication that the tornado washing dropped. we are going to be safe when we can and continue to watch. hey guess who just showed up. tucker barnes tucker almost to my world we have eclipse and strong storms i'm mad at
5:21 pm
this. >> so clear continuing thunderstorm warning for fauquier and stafford tore 5,000 and cancelled prince william out fwi we have two stobyes i took video. we can pause tracking the tore made '. >> we did a great job. i was read i was doing ross kunsry. >> is it possible that the sun being looked prevented us from hooking up thighs storms possible brother back if gaugeers huring pollutely down care. >> that's a deep thought sar ar after, any way, update the severe thunderstorm we dropped prince william out of it. again this is moving so long eekt only 5 miles an hour on the movement
5:22 pm
will be heavy rain producer as it heads to 91 friends and watch that one wide water to heard ford. but, of course, all eyes right now are on our 20 if here comes another wombing ge laugh but what about this tornado warning. i'm not seeing ap -- >> it remains in effect 5:30. >> that's coming up too. 7 or 8 minutes. let's look closely in the storm and drill down a little to show communities. >> south eekt at 15 and tornado quarter size hail. so it's blossomed. >> yeah, well you know what let's check the hail. here's heavy rain. coming down 2:34 getting close to
5:23 pm
that goes by fast folks it has tremendous lightning between craptico and clemens and this is the worst stonl ribl now and the size of the hail we check hail own it's still for st. mary county. >> st. mary county a few more minutes. >> that should go until 5:30. it will be interesting to see if they cancel early sarah or extend. it they -- the hail is still significant you know got a lot of real estate covering here and brightest part in the middle is going down. and at one point we saw inch and a half. and 1" inch is significant we hope so. >> this is pulse thunderstorm it pulses up and breathes and will let go. so hopefully the worst is over.
5:24 pm
bigger conference we'll have soon it's an active tornado season and we're the causes behind that. obviously we had the damage a couple weeks ago. over near stevensville and i think this more than imagination that we had a stoozen confirmed tore made otz. >> a lot of ef zeros and don't for the get there wasen be. >> i don't remember a season we had. of course tornadoes radar indicated and they're rated 5 to a. we had avenue ef zeros and threes unones and twos. 79 st. mary county take that lightning off. we know it's a lot of
