6:31 pm
ago. tonight's address comes on heels of charlottesville fallout and resignation of chief strategist steve bannon. >> ronica cleary starts us off tonight with look at what we may hear and you're in right in for the meyer where this is going down tonight. >> jim, shawn, a lot of anticipation leading up to tonight's remarks. if it has not been covered by solar eclipse i tried. i'm got very funny. what can i say. we have a little insight into what he might say. secretary of defense general mat is said that we can expect that the the president made up up his mind on saturday actually about what he's going to do in afghanistan. he's been sitting on this sometime. we do expect reports have said that we expect him to pull increased troop levels in afghanistan. i spoke with bringing deer general about this and he put it plain and simple. the only two openings he has is pull
6:32 pm
when he got to what it means to increase troops and how long this war has gone on the longest in america's history i asked him what is the end state in afghanistan stay a listen. >> i think the end state for places like iraq and afghan tan is to have enough capability to deter from conduct ago tacks on people of the united states and i think that is ends game and what that looks like i this is what the president will talk about tonight. >> and as we said he will be speaking here from for the meyer and i spoke with miles stanage friend of 5@630 and final 5 about the president's decision politically. he pointed out interesting point the president has to walk this fine line between america first policy and then of course being tough on terrorism. it will be interesting to hear how the president sort of manages
6:33 pm
it would not be 5@630 without hearing directly from you and giving you pulse of people. take a listen to what people had to say when we asked what they would like to see as we look ahead to america's l longest war we need to bring people back and it's a war he cannot win and it's just you know it's not about anything but president trump has too much pressure on him. >> if i were in the situation i would not quite know which way to turn. it's complex. i'm hopeful that his advisor have given this a lot of careful thought. donald trump has a reputation of doing things unexpected. >> i don't agree with donald trump and support himer don't have any opinions about what he
6:34 pm
believe he's truvl in actions. >> people on the street what are they expecting. one person brought interesting point president knows how to surprise us. in light of week president trump had last week i think he will probably stay very close to the script if not exactly on the script. follow military and their direction and stick to exactly what is laid out in front of him as he gives tonight's remarks. back to you jim and shawn. >> i want you to know i caught the eclipse joke you should not have back tracked gone for the football and headed for the end zone. >> work in progress. >> exactly. >> you made forward progress thanks ron ache. >> as we mentioned tonight speech comes after ousting of steve bannon someone known as skeptic of military intervention. >>stein orpolitical correspondent from mc clachy join us via skype.
6:35 pm
bannon we talk about white house post bannon. i heard relief, turning point, less stressful. what are you hearing and what's been response from congressional lawmakers and white house staffers. >> well great to be with you. certainly among those who had perhaps disagreements but with white house in the direction that in their view bannon represented that direction with more pop ulist nasal approach there's relief and certainly what i have spoken with among congressional staffers and political operatives there's a feeling perhaps this is sign that relatively new chief of staff john kelly is in fact able toll exert influence and perhaps is making efforts to reduce what many saw as chaotic white house to so the of diminish that chaos and at the same time there's been a lot of talk abouttive yot phone a long time and perhaps
6:36 pm
things will calm down a little bit. they are not expecting fundamental changes from this president. that has to come from him. >> when president trump or president-elect trump announced bannon's appointment he did so in press release priebus they're both done now. we're going back do that area you don't know where the pivot goes or what the track will be moving ahead. >> well, exactly. that's the concern i've heard if a lot of people on capitol hill for example who say that certainly they have a lot of respokt for general kelly and many did not agree with the more populous approach and we're happy to see bannon go. at the same time exactly as you noted the feeling is that we've been through talk pivots before and where does this go and how long are we in that pivot and what
6:37 pm
and uncertainty. it all comes back to direction the president is pushing and does he tweet and does that change the subject as it often does. >> i'm curious as far as white house is concerned no, i bannon back with brightbart is there concern there may be push back or backlash from brightbart and receive bannon now that he's ousted from the white house. >> to have concern it certainly defend who are you in the white house. it's no secret steve bannon did not get along with certainly some very prominent white house staffers and administration officials that supported more moderate internationalist approach and those tensions certainly have potential to be late even more now that he is at brightbart which is significant. >> i certainly don't suspect you would know exactly who has security clearance in this administration or not. we have
6:38 pm
is there concern here's steve bannon who had high security clearance and was on security council. he's gop and we see white house moving to afghanistan tilt. do you think maybe he has information moving forward that maybe other immediate what would not. >> what i can tell you certainly in the hours after the news that steve bannon was departing there was a lot of concern expressed that by observers that noted exactly as you did hey he no a lot of information and of course then he hours after he was let go he showed up at bright part editorial and certainly concern of what he knows and extent to which it could be disseminated and there's procedures in place to prevent any sharing of information that would be too sensitive. >> i want to point out the reason i ask that question right after announcement and steve bannon left we saw president trump

6:41 pm
big headline for tomorrow is fact it will be even hotter day. we're going for 95 but feel like 100 and if we have storms tomorrow they likely hold off until 9 or 10 p.m. and meanwhile a spoiler is because we had total solar eclipse in south carolina our own michael thomas was at we were thrilled clouds cooperated there as the sun went totally dark there. they said the clouds disappeared and mike and his photographer van applegate had a spectacular treat. we'll show you more pictures of that two minutes i believe in 20 seconds of darkness here in d.c. we had 81% of partial eclipse. you didn't probably see much of a change in light but something that was different. dimness, almost like a big overcast or early twilight happened in our area. a lot of people watched it locally too. hang on to eclipse glattss 2 2024 we'll have another one. as you know they were hard to come by. jim, shawn back to

6:46 pm
know. this is a problem. how do they address this problem? well in past years when this happened the director of secret service is saying tonight they've gone to congress and told congress that they need additional funding and resources and he is saying tonight in statement that that probably will be way that they address this and but you know shawn and jimmy will tell nut statement that just came out this evening secret service director is plain at the end this saying you cannot plame this on the trump family. there's many circumstances described in this. and having somebody like donald trump in this job communicates the secret service jobs. we've been detailing on "fox5"for five, six years now all different kind of problems that the secret
